Aims - To study the immunohistochemical expression of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in ductal hyperplasia of the breast and to investigate its putative relation with atypia and co-existing infiltrating ductal carcinoma.Methods - Paraffin wax embedded tissue from 37 cases of isolated ductal hyperplasia (five with atypia and 32 without atypia) and 25 cases of ductal hyperplasia associated infiltrating ductal carcinoma (IDC) (seven with atypia and 18 without atypia) was stained with a monoclonal anti-CEA antibody using a standard avidin biotin immunoperoxidase method.Results - CEA immunoreactivity was observed in eight (12.8%) ductal hyperplasia cases. The percentage of CEA positivity in ductal hyperplasia cases with atypia (33.3%) was substantially higher than that observed in cases of ductal hyperplasia without atypia (8.0%). Six cases of ductal hyperplasia associated IDC reacted with CEA; in these six cases the neoplastic cells of the co-existing carcinoma were also CEA positive. The percentage of CEA immunoreactivity in ductal hyperplasia associated IDC was higher than that observed in isolated ductal hyperplasia (24.0 v 5.4%). The percentage of CEA immunoreactivity in atypical ductal hyperplasia associated IDC was similar to that observed in IDC alone (42.9 v 40.0%).Conclusions-The presence of CEA immunoreactivity has been confirmed in benign proliferative breast lesions. The prevalence of such immunoreactivity increases from 3.1% in isolated, nonatypical ductal hyperplasia to 42.9% in atypical ductal hyperplasia associated IDC. This finding and the similarity of the frequency of CEA positivity in atypical ductal hyperplasia associated IDC and in IDC alone suggests that there is a pathogenetic link between ductal hyperplasia and some types of breast cancer.

1. Sexuals of a leaf-cutting ant, Atta bisphaerica Forel, left their nest for nuptial flights in October to December.2. When leaving a nest, 53 of the 479 winged sexuals (or alates) observed (11.1%) carried up to three inquiline spiders of Attacobius luederwaldti.3. Spiders exclusively selected winged sexuals, not workers, and preferred females, indicating their expectation of the stronger flight ability of females. Neither these sexuals nor workers that appeared out of the nest on flight days attempted to remove or attack spiders on the body of alates.4. New qucens landing from their nuptial flight did not carry spiders, indicating that the spiders had left the ants in the sky to be dispersed by wind.5. No spiders were found in more than 100 incipient nests, which were estimated to be 2-3 months old. This suggests that the spiders jumped off the alate during mid-flight and dispersed on the wind to inhabit larger nests.

The effect of light and temperature on germination of Brachiaria decumbens as well as the action of some dormancy breaking chemicals were tested. Two seed batches stored different times were used. The results show that seeds failed to respond to alternating temperature regimes and different light qualities. Seeds were indifferent to white light at 25 degrees C. KNO3, ethanol and H2SO4 failed to break seed dormancy, whereas KCN and H2O2 partially reduced dormancy of two month stored seeds. The results suggest a metabolic character of dormancy in ''new'' (freshly collected) seeds and confirm the occurence of two types of dormancy in B. decumbens seeds.

Fruit-eating by fishes represents an ancient (perhaps Paleozoic) interaction increasingly regarded as important for seed dispersal (ichthyochory) in tropical and temperate ecosystems. Most of the more than 275 known frugivorous species belong to the mainly Neotropical Characiformes (pacus, piranhas) and Siluriformes (catfishes), but cypriniforms (carps, minnows) are more important in the Holarctic and Indomalayan regions. Frugivores are among the most abundant fishes in Neotropical floodplains where they eat the fruits of a wide variety of trees and shrubs. By consuming fruits, fishes gain access to rich sources of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins and act as either seed predators or seed dispersers. With their often high mobility, large size, and great longevity, fruit-eating fishes can play important roles as seed dispersers and exert strong influences on local plant-recruitment dynamics and regional biodiversity. Recent feeding experiments focused on seed traits after gut passage support the idea that fishes are major seed dispersers in floodplain and riparian forests. Overfishing, damming, deforestation and logging potentially diminish ichthyochory and require immediate attention to ameliorate their effects. Much exciting work remains in terms of fish and plant adaptations to ichthyochory, dispersal regimes involving fishes in different ecosystems, and increased use of nondestructive methods such as stomach lavage, stable isotopes, genetic analyses and radio transmitters to determine fish diets and movements. We studied the potential role as seed disperser of the pacu fish (Piaracrus mesopotamicus, Characidae) in the Pantanal of Brazil. The most important food item in the diet of the pacu in the wet season was fruits of the palm Bactris glaucescens found in the guts of 73 percent of all fishes collected (N = 70). We found a positive relationship between fish length, weight, and gape size and the number of intact seeds in their gut. Therefore, large pacus are especially important in dispersing B. glaucescens seeds within the studied system. Since the best seed dispersers are the largest fishes, which are preferred by commercial fisheries, we predict that the ongoing over fishing in freshwater ecosystems will have major impacts on the dispersal system of fish-dependent plants. We suggest that it is paramount to change the attitudes in fisheries management of fruit-eating fishes and urgent to evaluate the impact of fishing on forest regeneration.

A potential previously utilized in the quark sector is extended to the gluon one. The short-range gluon-gluon interaction potential using QCD is calculated. To simulate the confinement a confining potential and an effective mass for the gluon are introduced. © 1989 Società Italiana di Fisica.

In this study we investigate aggregated patterns as a consequence of post-feeding larval dispersal in three blowfly species, based on the frequency distribution of sampling units in the substrate having 0, 1, 2,..., n pupae. Statistical analysis revealed that aggregated patterns of distribution emerge as a consequence of larval dispersal, and Cochliomyia macellaria has higher levels of aggregation when compared to Chrysomya megacephala and C. putoria. Aggregation during dispersal is associated with a spatial pattern where most larvae in the species tend to pupariate near the food source. The possible consequences for the population ecology of these species are discussed.
