We report the results concerning the influence of vacuum polarization due to quantum massive vector, scalar and spinor fields on the scalar sector of quasinormal modes in spherically symmetric charged black holes. The vacuum polarization from quantized fields produces a shift in the values of the quasinormal frequencies, and correspondingly the semiclassical system becomes a better oscillator with respect to the classical Reissner-Nordstrom black hole.

We found quasinormal modes, both in time and frequency domains, of the Ernst black holes, that is neutral black holes immersed in an external magnetic field. The Ernst solution reduces to the Schwarzschild solution, when the magnetic field vanishes. It is found that the quasinormal spectrum for massless scalar field in the vicinity of the magnetized black holes acquires an effective ""mass"" mu = 2B vertical bar m vertical bar, where m is the azimuthal number and B is parameter describing the magnetic field. We shall show that in the presence of a magnetic field quasinormal modes are longer lived and have larger oscillation frequencies. The perturbations of higher-dimensional magnetized black holes by Ortaggio and of magnetized dilaton black holes by Radu are considered. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Introduction - A large number of natural and synthetic compounds having butenolides as a core unit have been described and many of them display a wide range of biological activities. Butenolides from P. malacophyllum have presented potential antifungal activities but no specific, fast, and precise method has been developed for their determination. Objective - To develop a methodology based on micellar electrokinetic chromatography to determine butenolides in Piper species. Methodology - The extracts were analysed in an uncoated fused-silica capillaries and for the micellar system 20 mmol/L SDS, 20% (v/v) acetonitrile (ACN) and 10 mmol/L STB aqueous buffer at pH 9.2 were used. The method was validated for precision, linearity, limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) and the standard deviations were determined from the standard errors estimated by the regression line. Results - A micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method for determination of butenolides in extracts gave full resolution for 1 and 2. The analytical curve in the range 10.0-50.0 mu g/mL (r(2) = 0.999) provided LOD and LOQ for 1 and 2 of 2.1/6.3 and 1.1/3.5 mu g/mL, respectively. The RSD for migration times were 0.12 and 1.0% for peak area ratios with 100.0 +/- 1.4% of recovery. Conclusions - A novel high-performance MEKC method developed for the analysis of butenolides 1 and 2 in leaf extracts of P. malacophyllum allowed their quantitative determined within an analysis time shorter than 5 min and the results indicated CE to be a feasible analytical technique for the quantitative determination of butenolides in Piper extracts. A biomimetic sensor is proposed as a promising new analytical method for determination of captopril in different classes of samples. The sensor was prepared by modifying a carbon paste electrode with iron (II) phthalocyanine bis(pyridine) [FePe(dipy)] complex. Amperometric measurements in a batch analytical mode were first carried out in order to optimize the sensor response. An applied potential lower than 0.2 V vs Ag vertical bar AgCl in 0.1 mol L(-1) of TRIS buffer at pH 8.0 provided the best response, with a linear range of 2.5 x 10(-5) to 1.7 x 10(-4) mol L(-1). A detailed investigation of the selectivity of the sensor, employing seventeen other drugs, was also performed. Recovery studies were carried out using biological and environment samples in order to evaluate the sensor`s potential for use with these sample classes. Finally, the performance of the biomimetic sensor was optimized in a flow injection (FIA) system using a wall jet electrochemical cell. Under optimized flow conditions, a broad linear response range, from 5.0 x 10(-4) to 2.5 x 10(-2) mol L(-1), was obtained for captopril, with a sensitivity of 210 +/- 1 mu A L mol(-1).

The potential changes to the territory of the Russian Arctic open up unique possibilities for the development of tourism. More favourable transport opportunities along the Northern Sea Route (NSR) create opportunities for tourism development based on the utilisation of the extensive areas of sea shores and river basins. A major challenge for the Russian Arctic sea and river ports is their strong cargo transport orientation originated by natural resource extraction industries. A careful assessment of the prospects of current and future tourism development is presented here based on the development of regions located along the shores of the Arctic ocean (including Murmansk and Arkhangelsk oblast, Nenets Autonomous okrug (AO), Yamal-Nenets AO, Taymyr AO, Republic of Sakha, Chykotsky AO). An evaluation of the present development of tourism in maritime cities suggests that a considerable qualitative and quantitative increase of tourism activities organised by domestic tourism firms is made virtually impossible. There are several factors contributing to this. The previously established Soviet system of state support for the investments into the port facilities as well as the sea fleet were not effectively replaced by creation of new structures. The necessary investments for reconstruction could be contributed by the federal government but the priorities are not set towards the increased passenger transportation. Having in mind, increased environmental pressures in this highly sensitive area it is especially vital to establish a well-functioning monitoring and rescue system in the situation of ever increasing risks which come not only from the increased transports along the NSR, but also from the exploitation of the offshore oil and gas reserves in the Arctic seas. The capacity and knowledge established in Nordic countries (Norway, Finland) concerning cruise tourism should not be underestimated and the already functioning cooperation in Barents Region should expand towards this particular segment of the tourism industry. The current stage of economic development in Russia makes it clear that tourism development is not able to compete with the well-needed increase in the cargo transportation, which means that Russia’s fleet is going to be utilised by other industries. However, opening up this area to both local and international visitors could contribute to the economic prosperity of these remote areas and if carefully managed could sustain already existing maritime cities along the shores of the Arctic Ocean.

Some 50% of the people in the world live in rural areas, often under harsh conditions and in poverty. The need for knowledge of how to improve living conditions is well documented. In response to this need, new knowledge of how to improve living conditions in rural areas and elsewhere is continuously being developed by researchers and practitioners around the world. People in rural areas, in particular, would certainly benefit from being able to share relevant knowledge with each other, as well as with stakeholders (e.g. researchers) and other organizations (e.g. NGOs). Central to knowledge management is the idea of knowledge sharing. This study is based on the assumption that knowledge management can support sustainable development in rural and remote regions. It aims to present a framework for knowledge management in sustainable rural development, and an inventory of existing frameworks for that. The study is interpretive, with interviews as the primary source for the inventory of stakeholders, knowledge categories and Information and Communications Technology (ICT) infrastructure. For the inventory of frameworks, a literature study was carried out. The result is a categorization of the stakeholders who act as producers and beneficiaries of explicit and indigenous development knowledge. Stakeholders are local government, local population, academia, NGOs, civil society and donor agencies. Furthermore, the study presents a categorization of the development knowledge produced by the stakeholders together with specifications for the existing ICT infrastructure. Rural development categories found are research, funding, agriculture, ICT, gender, institutional development, local infrastructure development, and marketing & enterprise. Finally, a compiled framework is presented, and it is based on ten existing frameworks for rural development that were found in the literature study, and the empirical findings of the Gilgit-Baltistan case. Our proposed framework is divided in four levels where level one consists of the identified stakeholders, level two consists of rural development categories, level three of the knowledge management system and level four of sustainable rural development based on the levels below. In the proposed framework we claim that the sustainability of rural development can be achieved through a knowledge society in which knowledge of the rural development process is shared among all relevant stakeholders.

The aim of this thesis is to examine the early vocabulary development of a sample of Swedish children in relation to parental input and early communicative skills. Three studies are situated in an overall description of early language development in children. The data analyzed in the thesis was collected within a larger project at Stockholm University (SPRINT- “Effects of enhanced parental input on young children’s vocabulary development and subsequent literacy development” [VR 2008-5094]). Data analysis was based on parental report via SECDI, the Swedish version of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Development Inventories, and audio recordings. One study examined parental verbal interaction characteristics in three groups of children with varying vocabulary size at 18 months. The stability of vocabulary development at 18 and 24 months was investigated in a larger study, with focus on children’s vocabulary composition and grammatical abilities. The third study examined interrelations among early gestures, receptive and productive vocabulary, and grammar measured with M3L, i.e. three longest utterances, from 12 to 30 months. Overall results of the thesis highlight the importance of early language development. Variability in different characteristics in parental input is associated with variability in child vocabulary size. Children with large early vocabularies exhibit the most stability in vocabulary composition and the earliest grammatical development. Children’s vocabulary composition may reflect individual stylistic variation. Use of early gestures is associated differentially with receptive and productive vocabulary. Results of the thesis have implications for parents, child- and healthcare personnel, as well as researchers and educational practitioners. The results underscore the importance of high quality in adult-child interaction, with rich input fine-tuned to children’s developmental levels and age, together with high awareness of early language development.
