Photoresponse of n-type indium-doped ZnO and a p-type polymer (PEDOT:PSS) heterojunction devices are studied, juxtaposed with the photoluminescence of the In-ZnO samples. In addition to the expected photoresponse in the ultraviolet, the heterojunctions exhibit significant photoresponse to the visible (532 nm). However, neither the doped ZnO nor PEDOT: PSS individually show any photoresponse to visible light. The sub-bandgap photoresponse of the heterojunction originates from visible photon mediated e-h generation between the In-ZnO valence band and localized states lying within the band gap. Though increased doping of In-ZnO has limited effect on the photoluminescence, it significantly diminishes the photoresponse. The study indicates that optimally doped devices are promising for the detection of wavelengths in selected windows in the visible. The idea of a structural landscape is based on the fact that a large number of crystal structures can be associated with a particular organic molecule. Taken together, all these structures constitute the landscape. The landscape includes polymorphs, pseudopolymorphs and solvates. Under certain circumstances, it may also include multicomponent crystals (or co-crystals) that contain the reference molecule as one of the components. Under still other circumstances, the landscape may include the crystal structures of molecules that are closely related to the reference molecule. The idea of a landscape is to facilitate the understanding of the process of crystallization. It includes all minima that can, in principle, be accessed by the molecule in question as it traverses the path from solution to the crystal. Isonicotinamide is a molecule that is known to form many co-crystals. We report here a 2 : 1 co-crystal of this amide with 3,5-dinitrobenzoic acid, wherein an unusual N-H center dot center dot center dot N hydrogen-bonded pattern is observed. This crystal structure offers some hints about the recognition processes between molecules that might be implicated during crystallization. Also included is a review of other recent results that illustrate the concept of the structural landscape.

Electrical conductivity and Seebeck coefficient of calcium-doped YFeO3, a potential cathode material in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), are measured as function of temperature and composition in air to resolve conflicts in the literature both on the nature of conduction (n- or p-type) and the types of defects (majority and the minority) present. Compositions of Y1-xCaxFeO3-delta with x = 0.0, 0.025, 0.05 and 0.1 are studied in the temperature range from 625 to 1250 K. All Y1-xCaxFeO3-delta samples show p-type semiconducting behaviour. Addition of Ca up to 5% dramatically increases the conductivity of YFeO3; increase is more gradual up to 10%. A second phase Ca2Fe2O5 appears in the microstructure for Ca concentrations in excess of 11%.

N-doped monoclinic Ga2O3 nanostructures of different morphologies have been synthesized by heating Ga metal in ambient air at 1150 degrees C to 1350 degrees C for 1 to 5 h duration. Neither catalyst nor any gas flow has been used for the synthesis of N-doped Ga2O3 nanostructures. The morphology was controlled by monitoring the curvature of the Ga droplet. Plausible growth mechanisms are discussed to explain the different morphology of the nanostructures. Elemental mapping by electron energy loss spectroscopy of the nanostructures indicate uniform distribution of Ga, O and N. It is interesting to note that we have used neither nitride source nor any gas flow but the synthesis was carried out in ambient air. We believe that ambient nitrogen acts as the source of nitrogen. Unintentional nitrogen doping of the Ga2O3 nanostructures is a straightforward method and such nanostructures could be promising candidates for white light emission.

The photoluminescence study of Fermi-edge singularity (FES) in modulation-doped pseudomorphic AlxGa1-xAs/InyGa1-yAs/GaAs quantum well (QW) heterostructures is presented. In the above QW structures the optical transitions between n = 1 and n = 2 electronic subband to the n = 1 heavy hole subband (E-11 and E-21 transitions, respectively) are observed with FES appearing as a lower energy shoulder to the E-21 transition. The observed FES is attributed to the Fermi wave vector in the first electronic subband under the conditions of population of the second electronic subband. The FES appears at about 10 meV below E-21 transition around 4.2 K. Initially it gets stronger with increasing temperature and becomes a distinct peak at about 20 K. Further increase in temperature quenches FES and reaches the base line at around 40 K.

Titanium-carbon (Ti-C) thin films of different compositions were prepared by a combination of pulsed DC (for Ti target) and normal DC (for graphite target) magnetron co-sputtering on oxidized silicon and fused quartz substrates. At 33.7 at.% of C content, pure hcp Ti transforms into fcc-TiC with a preferential orientation of (2 2 0) along with (1 1 1) and (2 0 0). A clear transformation in the preferential orientation from (2 2 0) to (1 1 1) has been observed when the C content was increased to 56 at.%. At 62.5 at.% of C, TiC precipitates in an amorphous carbon matrix whereas further increase in C leads to X-ray amorphous films. The cross-sectional scanning electron microscope images reveal that the films with low carbon content consists of columnar grains, whereas, randomly oriented grains are in an amorphous carbon matrix at higher carbon content. A dramatic variation was observed in the mechanical properties such as hardness, H, from 30 to 1 GPa and in modulus, E, from 255 to 25 GPa with varying carbon content in the films. Resistance to plastic deformation parameter was observed as 0.417 for films containing 62.5 at.% of C. Nanoscratch test reveals that the films are highly scratch resistant with a coefficient of friction ranging from 0.15 to 0.04. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

We present a green method for the synthesis of ZnO-Au hybrids using an ultrafast microwave-based technique. This method provides good control over the nucleation of the metal nanoparticles on the oxide support, which governs the morphology and microstructure of the hybrids. The hybrids exhibit good catalytic activity for CO oxidation compared to similar hybrids reported in the literature. Detailed XPS investigation reveals the presence of Au-Zn and Au-O bonds at the interface. This surface doping leads to the formation of anionic and cationic Au sites that contribute to the enhanced activity. Our method is general and can be applied for designing other supported catalysts with controlled interfaces.

Droplet collision occurs frequently in regions where the droplet number density is high. Even for Lean Premixed and Pre-vaporized (LPP) liquid sprays, the collision effects can be very high on the droplet size distributions, which will in turn affect the droplet vaporization process. Hence, in conjunction with vaporization modeling, collision modeling for such spray systems is also essential. The standard O'Rourke's collision model, usually implemented in CFD codes, tends to generate unphysical numerical artifact when simulations are performed on Cartesian grid and the results are not grid independent. Thus, a new collision modeling approach based on no-time-counter method (NTC) proposed by Schmidt and Rutland is implemented to replace O'Rourke's collision algorithm to solve a spray injection problem in a cylindrical coflow premixer. The so called ``four-leaf clover'' numerical artifacts are eliminated by the new collision algorithm and results from a diesel spray show very good grid independence. Next, the dispersion and vaporization processes for liquid fuel sprays are simulated in a coflow premixer. Two liquid fuels under investigation are jet-A and Rapeseed Methyl Esters (RME). Results show very good grid independence in terms of SMD distribution, droplet number distribution and fuel vapor mass flow rate. A baseline test is first established with a spray cone angle of 90 degrees and injection velocity of 3 m/s and jet-A achieves much better vaporization performance than RME due to its higher vapor pressure. To improve the vaporization performance for both fuels, a series of simulations have been done at several different combinations of spray cone angle and injection velocity. At relatively low spray cone angle and injection velocity, the collision effect on the average droplet size and the vaporization performance are very high due to relatively high coalescence rate induced by droplet collisions. Thus, at higher spray cone angle and injection velocity, the results expectedly show improvement in fuel vaporization performance since smaller droplet has a higher vaporization rate. The vaporization performance and the level of homogeneity of fuel-air mixture can be significantly improved when the dispersion level is high, which can be achieved by increasing the spray cone angle and injection velocity. Neutralino dark matter in supersymmetric models is revisited in the presence of flavor violation in the soft supersymmetry breaking sector. We focus on flavor violation the sleptonic sector and study the implications for the co-annihilation regions. Flavor is introduced by a single (mu) over tilde (R) - (T) over tilde (R) insertion in the slepton mass matrix. Limits on insertion from BR(tau -> mu + gamma) are weak in some regions of the parameter space where happen within the amplitudes. We look for overlaps in parameter space where the co-annihilation condition as well as the cancellations within the amplitudes occur. mSUGRA, such overlap regions are not existent, whereas they are present in models non-universal Higgs boundary conditions (NUHM). The effect of flavor violation is fold: (a) it shifts the co-annihilation regions towards lighter neutralino masses (b) co-annihilation cross sections would be modified with the inclusion of flavor violating which can contribute significantly. Even if flavor violation is within the presently limits, this is sufficient to modify the thermally averaged cross-sections by about 15)% in mSUGRA and (20{30)% in NUHM, depending on the parameter space. In overlap regions, the flavor violating cross sections become comparable and in some even dominant to the flavor conserving ones. A comparative study of the channels is for mSUGRA and NUHM cases.

Titanium carbide (TiC) is an electrically conducting material with favorable electrochemical properties. In the present studies, carbon-doped TiO2 (C-TiO2) has been synthesized from TiC particles, as well as TiC films coated on stainless steel substrate via thermal annealing under various conditions. Several C-TiO2 substrates are synthesized by varying experimental, conditions and characterized by UV-visible spectroscopy, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic techniques. C-TiO2 in the dry state (in powder form as well as in film form) is subsequently used as a substrate for enhancing Raman signals corresponding to 4-mercaptobenzoic acid and 4-nitrothiophenol by utilizing chemical enhancement based on charge-transfer interactions. Carbon, a nonmetal dopant in TiO2, improves the intensities of Raman signals, compared, to undoped TiO2. Significant dependence of Raman intensity on carbon doping is observed. Ameliorated performance obtained using C-TiO2 is attributed to the presence of surface defects that originate due to carbon as a dopant, which, in turn,, triggers charge transfer between TiO2 and analyte. The C-TiO2 substrates are subsequently regenerated for repetitive use by illuminating an analyte-adsorbed substrate with visible light for a period of 5 h.

Nb is one of the common refractory elements added in Ni, Co and Fe based superalloys. This lead to the formation of brittle topological close packed (tcp) mu phase, which is deleterious to the structure. It mainly grows by interdiffusion and in the present article, the interdiffusion process in different Nb-X (X=Ni, Co, Fe) systems is discussed. The activation energy for interdiffusion is lower in the Co-Nb system (173 kJ/mol) than Fe-Nb system (233 kJ/mol), which is again lower than the value found in the Ni-Nb system (319.7 kJ/mol). The mole fraction of Nb in this phase is less than Fe or Co at stoichiometric compositions in the Nb-Fe (that is Fe7Nb6) and Nb-Co (that is Co7Nb6) systems. On the other hand, the mole fraction of Nb is higher than Ni in the same phase (Ni6Nb2) in Ni-Nb system. However, in all the phases, Nb has lower diffusion rate. Possible diffusion mechanism in this phase is discussed with respect to the crystal structure.

Pure and tin doped zinc oxide (Sn:ZnO) thin films were prepared for the first time by NSP technique using aqueous solutions of zinc acetate dehydrate, tin (IV) chloride fendahydrate and methanol. X-ray diffraction patterns confirm that the films are polycrystalline in nature exhibiting hexagonal wurtzite type, with (0 0 2) as preferred orientation. The structural parameters such as lattice constant ('a' and `c'), crystallite size, dislocation density, micro strain, stress and texture coefficient were calculated from X-ray diffraction studies. Surface morphology was found to be modified with increasing Sn doping concentration. The ZnO films have high transmittance 85% in the visible region, and the transmittance is found to be decreased with the increase of Sn doping concentration. The corresponding optical band gap decreases from 3.25 to 3.08 eV. Room temperature photoluminescence reveals the sharp emission of strong UV peak at 400 nm (3.10 eV) and a strong sharp green luminescence at 528 nm (2.34 eV) in the Sn doped ZnO films. The electrical resistivity is found to be 10(6) Omega-cm at higher temperature and 10(5) Omega-cm at lower temperature. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Effect of interaction of tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and tetrathia fulvalene (TTF) with boron- and nitrogen-doped graphene has been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. The G- and 2D bands of boron- and nitrogen-doped graphenes in the Raman spectra show significantly different changes on interaction with electron-donor and -acceptor molecules. Thus, tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF) have different effects on the Raman spectra of boron- and nitrogen-doped graphenes. The changes in the Raman spectra brought about by electron-donor and -acceptor molecules can be understood in general terms on the basis of molecular charge transfer. (c) 2012 Elsevier B.V. A new thieno3,2-b]thiophenediketopyrrolopyrrole-benzo1,2-b:4,5-b']dithio phene based narrow optical gap co-polymer (PTTDPP-BDT) has been synthesized and characterized for field-effect transistors and solar cells. In field-effect transistors the polymer exhibited ambipolar charge transport behaviour with maximum hole and electron mobilities of 10(-3) cm(2) V-1 s(-1) and 10(-5) cm(2)V(-1) s(-1), respectively. The respectable charge transporting properties of the polymer were consistent with X-ray diffraction measurements that showed close molecular packing in the solid state. The difference in hole and electron mobilities was explained by density functional theory calculations, which showed that the highest occupied molecular orbital was delocalized along the polymer backbone with the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital localized on the bis(thieno3,2-b]thiophene)diketopyrrolopyrrole units. Bulk heterojunction photovoltaic devices with the fullerene acceptor PC70BM were fabricated and delivered a maximum conversion efficiency of 3.3% under AM1.5G illumination. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V.
