Akaganeite is a very rare iron oxyhydroxide in nature. It can be obtained by many synthetic routes, but thermohydrolysis is the most common method reported in the literature. In this work, akaganeite-like materials were prepared through the thermohydrolysis of FeCl(3)center dot 6H(2)O in water and suspensions containing clay minerals. X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) data show that the clays determine the crystal phase and size of the iron oxyhydroxide crystals. According to XRD and FTIR data, beta-FeO(OH) (akaganeite) is the main metal oxyhydroxide phase. Considering the small basal spacing (d(0 0 1)) displacement observed when comparing the XRD patterns of pristine clays with the composites containing beta-FeO(OH), the iron oxyhydroxide should be mostly located on the basal and edge surfaces of the clay minerals. UV-Vis electronic absorption spectra indicate that the preferred phase of the iron oxyhydroxide is determined by the nature of the clay minerals. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Highly stable and crystalline V(2)O(5) nanoparticles with an average diameter of 15 nm have been easily prepared by thermal treatment of a bariandite-like vanadium oxide, V(10)O(24)center dot 9H(2)O. Their characterization was carried out by powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD). Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) and Raman spectroscopies, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The fibrous and nanostructured film obtained by electrophoretic deposition of the V(2)O(5) nanoparticles showed good electroactivity when submitted to cyclic voltammetry in an ionic liquid-based electrolyte. The use of this film for the preparation of a nanostructured electrode led to an improvement of about 50% in discharge capacity values when compared with similar electrodes obtained by casting of a V(2)O(5) xerogel. CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles were obtained by the co-precipitation method. They were further modified by the adsorption of ricinoleic acid (RA). The non-modified and modified CoFe(2)O(4)/RA nanoparticles were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), Raman, and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The modified particles present a mean diameter < 20 nm. The adsorption of RA on the CoFe(2)O(4) surface is characterized by the IR absorptions of the RA while in the Raman spectrum the predominant signals are those from the CoFe(2)O(4). The cis-polyisoprene (PI) composite was prepared by dissolving PI in cyclohexane followed by the addition of a magnetic fluid based on CoFe(2)O(4)/RA nanoparticles dispersed in cyclohexane. After solvent evaporation a magnetic composite was obtained and characterized by AFM, Raman, and FTIR measurements. AFM images show uniformly CoFe(2)O(4)/RA particles distributed in the PI matrix. Raman spectra obtained for the composites reveal the characteristic Raman peaks of PI and CoFe(2)O(4) nanoparticles.

The interaction of 4-nerolidylcatechol (4-NRC), a potent antioxidant agent, and 2-hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin (HP-beta-CD) was investigated by the solubility method using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) methods in addition to UV-Vis, (1)H-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and molecular modeling. The inclusion complexes were prepared using grinding, kneading and freeze-drying methods. According to phase solubility studies in water a B(S)-type diagram was found, displaying a stoichiometry complexation of 2:1 (drug:host) and stability constant of 6494 +/- A 837 M(-1). Stoichiometry was established by the UV spectrophotometer using Job`s plot method and, also confirmed by molecular modeling. Data from (1)H-NMR, and FTIR, experiments also provided formation evidence of an inclusion complex between 4-NRC and HP-beta-CD. 4-NRC complexation indeed led to higher drug solubility and stability which could probably be useful to improve its biological properties and make it available to oral administration and topical formulations.

The ethanol oxidation reaction (EOR) was investigated using PtSnCe/C electrocatalysts in different mass ratios (72:23:5, 68:22:10 and 64:21:15) that were prepared by the polymeric precursor method. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) showed that the particles ranged in size from approximately 2 to 5 nm. Changes in the net parameters observed for Pt suggest the incorporation of Sn and Ce into the Pt crystalline network with the formation of an alloy between Pt, Sn and/or Ce. Among the PtSnCe catalysts investigated, the 68:22:10 composition showed the highest activity toward ethanol oxidation, and the current time curves obtained in the presence of ethanol in acidic media showed a current density 50% higher than that observed for commercial PtSn/C (E-Tek). During the experiments performed on single direct ethanol fuel cells, the power density for the PtSnCe/C 68:22:10 anode was nearly 40% higher than the one obtained using the commercial catalyst. Data from Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed that the observed behavior for ethanol oxidation may be explained in terms of a double mechanism. The presence of Sn and Ce seems to favor CO oxidation, since they produce an oxygen-containing species to oxidize acetaldehyde to acetic acid. Copyright (C) 2011, Hydrogen Energy Publications, LLC. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of the storage time on the thermal properties of triethylene glycol dimethacrylate/2,2-bis[4-(2-hydroxy-3-methacryloxy-prop-1-oxy)-phenyl]propane bisphenyl-alpha-glycidyl ether dimethacrylate (TB) copolymers used in formulations of dental resins after photopolymerization. The TB copolymers were prepared by photopolymerization with an Ultrablue IS light-emitting diode, stored in the dark for 160 days at 37 degrees C, and characterized with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflection. DSC curves indicated the presence of an exothermic peak, confirming that the reaction was not completed during the photopolymerization process. This exothermic peak became smaller as a function of the storage time and was shifted at higher temperatures. In DMA studies, a plot of the loss tangent versus the temperature initially showed the presence of two well-defined peaks. The presence of both peaks confirmed the presence of residual monomers that were not converted during the photopolymerization process. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. This study presents the preparation, characterization and application of copper octa(3-aminopropyl)octasilsesquioxane following its subsequent reaction with azide ions (ASCA). The precursor (AC) and the novel compound (ASCA) were characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Thermogravimetric analyses and voltammetric technique. The cyclic voltammogram of the modified graphite paste electrode with ASCA (GPE-ASCA), showed one redox couple with formal potential (E(1/2)(ox)) = 0.30 V and an irreversible process at 1.1 V (vs. Ag/AgCl; NaCl 1.0 M; v = 20 mV s(-1)). The material is very sensitive to nitrite concentrations. The modified graphite paste electrode (GPE-ASCA) gives a linear range from 1.0 x 10(-4) to 4.0 x 10(-3) mol L(-1) for the determination of nitrite, with a detection limit of 2.1 x 10(-4) mol L(-1) and the amperometric sensitivity of 8.04 mA/mol L(-1). Sewage sludge from wastewater treatment contains organic matter and plant nutrients that can play an important role in agricultural production and the maintenance of soil fertility, The present study has aimed to evaluate the degree of humification following sewage sludge application of soil organic matter by laser-induced fluorescence and humic acids using ultraviolet-visible fluorescence, and including comparison with Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Sewage sludge applications to the soil caused a decrease in the degree of humification of the soil organic matter and humic acids for both a Typic Eutrorthox (clayey) soil and a Typic Haplorthox (sandy) soil of around 14 and 27%, respectively. This effect is probably clue to incorporation of newly formed humic substances from the sewage sludge into the characteristics of less humified material, and to the indigenous soil humic substances. The minor alterations observed in the clay soil probably occurred due to both the greater mineral association, which better stabilized the indigenous soil organic matter, and the higher microbial activity in this soil, which accelerated sewage sludge mineralization. Sewage sludge applications increased the C content for the clay and sandy soils by 7.4 and 15.4 g kg(-1), respectively, suggesting a positive effect on these two soils.

Thermosetting polymer blends of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) and bisphenol-A-type epoxy resin (ER) were prepared using 4,4′-methylenebis(3-chloro-2,6-diethylaniline) (MCDEA) as curing agent. The miscibility and crystallization behavior of MCDEA-cured ER/PEO blends were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The existence of a single composition-dependent glass transition temperature (Tg) indicates that PEO is completely miscible with MCDEA-cured ER in the melt and in the amorphous state over the entire composition range. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) investigations indicated hydrogen-bonding interaction between the hydroxyl groups of MCDEA-cured ER and the ether oxygens of PEO in the blends, which is an important driving force for the miscibility of the blends. The average strength of the hydrogen bond in the cured ER/PEO blends is higher than in the pure MCDEA-cured ER. Crystallization kinetics of PEO from the melt is strongly influenced by the blend composition and the crystallization temperature. At high conversion, the time dependence of the relative degree of crystallinity deviated from the Avrami equation. The addition of a non-crystallizable ER component into PEO causes a depression of both the overall crystallization rate and the melting temperature. The surface free energy of folding σe displays a minimum with variation of composition. The spherulitic morphology of PEO in the ER/PEO blends exhibits typical characteristics of miscible crystalline/amorphous blends, and the PEO spherulites in the blends are always completely volume-filling. Real-time small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) experiments reveal that the long period L increases drastically with increasing ER content at the same temperatures. The amorphous cured ER component segregates interlamellarly during the crystallization process of PEO because of the low chain mobility of the cured ER. A model describing the semicrystalline morphology of MCDEA-cured ER/PEO blends is proposed based on the SAXS results. The semicrystalline morphology is a stack of crystalline lamellae; the amorphous fraction of PEO, the branched ER chains and imperfect ER network are located between PEO lamellae.

In this paper, sereval varieties of animal fibres including cashmere and Australian fine Merino wool have been analysed by Fourier transform infrared microscope and differential scanning calorimeter. The results showed that both Chinese and Australian cashmere fibres started absorbing heat at a relatively higher temperature but were thermally degraded quicker than other animal fibres tested. However, the mass changes (within the temperature range of 200oC to 350oC) and associated onset temperatures varied among fibre varieties. From the attenuated total reflectance spectra, the Chinese cashmere was clearly different from Australian cashmere and wool in a peak near 1040 cm-1 wavelength for S-O stretching of cysteic acid residues. The Chinese cashmere presented a stronger absorption at 1019 cm-1 wavelength, while Australian cashmere and wool peaked at 1079 cm-1 wavelength and had a weaker absorption. Combined with thermal analysis, the normalised R-SO3 - content of cysteic acid residues to the amide II peak of the protein backbone may have potential use in identifying Australian fine Merino wool from Chinese cashmere.

Quickstep ™ is a fluid filled floating mould technology which was recently developed by an Australian company of the same name. The Quickstep and conventional autoclave manufacture of composites were compared by investigating the mode I interlaminar fracture toughness and nanocreep propeties of HexPly914 carbon epoxy composites. It was found that composites cured using the Quickstep technology had significantly higher fracture toughness (1.8 times) than the composites cured via autoclave for this system. DMTA (dynamic mechanical thermal analysis) results showed a higher Tg (glass transition temperature) for the material manufactured by the Quickstep than that cured by the autoclave. FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy) spectra did not indicate any difference in cure chemistry between the two processes. Nanocreep experiments were performed to explore the viscoelastic properties of the epoxy matrix of composites. The KelvinVoigt three-element model was applied to analyse the indentation creep behaviour of both composites.

The phase behavior, hydrogen bonding interactions and morphology of poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) and poly(var epsilon-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinyl pyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP) were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy (AFM). In this A-b-B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, both P2VP and PCL blocks have favorable intermolecular interaction towards phenoxy via hydrogen bonding. However, the hydrogen bonding between P2VP and phenoxy is significantly stronger than that between PCL and phenoxy. Selective hydrogen bonding between phenoxy/P2VP pair at lower phenoxy contents and co-existence of two competitive hydrogen bonding interactions between phenoxy/P2VP and phenoxy/PCL pairs at higher phenoxy contents were observed in the blends. This leads to the formation of a variety of composition dependent nanostructures including wormlike, hierarchical and core–shell morphologies. The blends became homogeneous at 95 wt% phenoxy where both blocks of the PCL-b-P2VP were miscible with phenoxy due to hydrogen bonding. In the end, a model was proposed to explain the microphase morphology of blends based on the experimental results obtained. The swelling of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer by phenoxy due to selective hydrogen bonding causes formation of different microphases

Nanostructured complexes were prepared from poly(ε-caprolactone)-block-poly(2-vinylpyridine) (PCL-b-P2VP) and poly(4-vinylphenol) (PVPh) in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The phase behavior, specific interactions, and morphology were investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS). In this A-b-B/C type block copolymer/homopolymer system, both blocks of the PCL-b-P2VP block copolymer have favorable intermolecular interaction toward PVPh via hydrogen bonding, but the interaction between P2VP block and PVPh is significantly stronger than that between PCL block and PVPh. It was found that the disparity in competitive intermolecular interactions, specifically PVPh and P2VP block interact strongly whereas PVPh and PCL block interact weakly, leads to the formation of a variety of nanostructures depending on PVPh concentration. Spherical micelles of 30−40 nm in diameter were obtained in the complex with 10 wt % PVPh, followed by wormlike micelles with size in the order of 40−50 nm in the complexes with 30−60 wt % PVPh. At low PVPh concentrations, PCL interacts weakly with PVPh, whereas in the complexes containing more than 20 wt % PVPh, the PCL block began to interact considerably with PVPh, leading to the formation of composition-dependent nanostructures. The complex becomes homogeneous with PVPh content beyond 60 wt %, since a sufficient amount of PVPh is available to form hydrogen bonds with both PCL and P2VP. Finally, a model was proposed to explain the self-assembly and microphase morphology of these complexes based on the experimental results obtained. The competitive hydrogen-bonding interactions cause the self-assembly and formation of different microphase morphologies.

In this study, superfine wool powder was plasticized with glycerol and hot-pressed into a film. Scanning electron microscopy photos showed that the superfine wool powder could be molded into a smooth film and that the wool powder was distributed evenly in the cross section of the film. Fourier transform infrared analysis revealed no substantial changes in the chemical structure of the wool powder after hot pressing, but the absorbing peaks of glycerol were found in the spectrum. X-ray diffraction analysis showed that the overall crystallinity increased after the wool powder was hot-pressed into film. Thermogravimetry (TG) analysis indicated that the thermal stability of the hot-pressed film decreased. A transition point appeared in the TG curve of the wool hot-pressed film as glycerol was added. The differential thermal analysis curve of the film showed sharp absorbing peaks similar to that of wool powder. With increasing glycerol content, the film showed increasing ductility and softness.
