Towed vehicles: undulating platforms as tools for maping coastal processes and water quality assessment, Seaside, California, February 5-7,2007. Workshop proceedings

The Alliance for Coastal Technologies (ACT) Workshop on Towed Vehicles: Undulating Platforms As Tools for Mapping Coastal Processes and Water Quality Assessment was convened February 5-7,2007 at The Embassy Suites Hotel, Seaside, California and sponsored by the ACT-Pacific Coast partnership at the Moss Landing Marine Laboratories (MLML). The TUV workshop was co-chaired by Richard Burt (Chelsea Technology Group) and Stewart Lamerdin (MLML Marine Operations). Invited participants were selected to provide a uniform representation of the academic researchers, private sector product developers, and existing and potential data product users from the resource management community to enable development of broad consensus opinions on the application of TUV platforms in coastal resource assessment and management. The workshop was organized to address recognized limitations of point-based monitoring programs, which, while providing valuable data, are incapable of describing the spatial heterogeneity and the extent of features distributed in the bulk solution. This is particularly true as surveys approach the coastal zone where tidal and estuarine influences result in spatially and temporally heterogeneous water masses and entrained biological components. Aerial or satellite based remote sensing can provide an assessment of the aerial extent of plumes and blooms, yet provide no information regarding the third dimension of these features. Towed vehicles offer a cost-effective solution to this problem by providing platforms, which can sample in the horizontal, vertical, and time-based domains. Towed undulating vehicles (henceforth TUVs) represent useful platforms for event-response characterization. This workshop reviewed the current status of towed vehicle technology focusing on limitations of depth, data telemetry, instrument power demands, and ship requirements in an attempt to identify means to incorporate such technology more routinely in monitoring and event-response programs. Specifically, the participants were charged to address the following: (1) Summarize the state of the art in TUV technologies; (2) Identify how TUV platforms are used and how they can assist coastal managers in fulfilling their regulatory and management responsibilities; (3) Identify barriers and challenges to the application of TUV technologies in management and research activities, and (4) Recommend a series of community actions to overcome identified barriers and challenges. A series of plenary presentation were provided to enhance subsequent breakout discussions by the participants. Dave Nelson (University of Rhode Island) provided extensive summaries and real-world assessment of the operational features of a variety of TUV platforms available in the UNOLs scientific fleet. Dr. Burke Hales (Oregon State University) described the modification of TUV to provide a novel sampling platform for high resolution mapping of chemical distributions in near real time. Dr. Sonia Batten (Sir Alister Hardy Foundation for Ocean Sciences) provided an overview on the deployment of specialized towed vehicles equipped with rugged continuous plankton recorders on ships of opportunity to obtain long-term, basin wide surveys of zooplankton community structure, enhancing our understanding of trends in secondary production in the upper ocean. Study on the Capacity Degradation of Bucket Foundation in Liquefied Sand Layer under Cyclic Loads

The capacity degradation of bucket foundation in liquefied sand layer under cyclic loads such as equivalent dynamic ice-induced loads is studied. A simplified numerical model of liquefied sand layer has been presented based on the dynamic centrifuge experiment results. The ice-induced dynamic loads are modeled as equivalent sine cyclic loads, the liquefaction degree in different position of sand layer and effects of main factors are investigated. Subsequently, the sand resistance is represented by uncoupled, non-linear sand springs which describe the sub-failure behavior of the local sand resistance as well as the peak capacity of bucket foundation under some failure criterion. The capacity of bucket foundation is determined in liquefied sand layer and the rule of capacity degradation is analyzed. The capacity degradation in liquefied sand layer is analyzed comparing with that in non-liquefied sand layer. The results show that the liquefaction degree is 0.9 at the top and is only 0.06 at the bottom of liquefied sand layer. The numerical results are agreement well with the centrifugal experimental results. The value of the degradation of bucket capacity is 12% in numerical simulating whereas it is 17% in centrifugal experiments.

Response of the Bucket Foundation in Calcareous Sand under Horizontal Dynamic Load

Abstract: Experiments to determine the horizontal static bearing capacity are carried out first. The static bearing capacity is a reference for choosing the amplitudes of dynamic load. Then a series of experiments under dynamic horizontal load are carried out in laboratory to study the influences of factors, such as the scales of bucket, the amplitude and frequency of load, the density of soils etc.. The responses of bucket foundations in calcareous sand under horizontal dynamic load are analyzed according to the experimental results. The displacements of bucket and sand layer are analyzed.

Este proyecto ha servido para afianzar conocimientos adquiridos a lo largo del grado, como el desarrollo de bases de datos, seguridad y arquitecturas y algoritmos software. Pero también ha servido para aprender nuevas cosas, como programar para un sistema diferente, utilizar elementos poco vistos en el grado, como la geolocalización y los mapas.

Edge function method applied to thin plates resting on Winkler foundation

The Edge Function method formerly developed by Quinlan⁽²⁵⁾ is applied to solve the problem of thin elastic plates resting on spring supported foundations subjected to lateral loads the method can be applied to plates of any convex polygonal shapes, however, since most plates are rectangular in shape, this specific class is investigated in this thesis. The method discussed can also be applied easily to other kinds of foundation models (e.g. springs connected to each other by a membrane) as long as the resulting differential equation is linear. In chapter VII, solution of a specific problem is compared with a known solution from literature. In chapter VIII, further comparisons are given. The problems of concentrated load on an edge and later on a corner of a plate as long as they are far away from other boundaries are also given in the chapter and generalized to other loading intensities and/or plates springs constants for Poisson's ratio equal to 0.2

Violence in the Medieval Church before the First Crusade

The attitude of the medieval church towards violence before the First Crusade in 1095 underwent a significant institutional evolution, from the peaceful tradition of the New Testament and the Roman persecution, through the prelate-led military campaigns of the Carolingian period and the Peace of God era. It would be superficially easy to characterize this transformation as the pragmatic and entirely secular response of a growing power to the changing world. However, such a simplification does not fully do justice to the underlying theology. While church leaders from the 5th Century to the 11th had vastly different motivations and circumstances under which to develop their responses to a variety of violent activities, the teachings of Augustine of Hippo provided a unifying theme. Augustine’s just war theology, in establishing which conflicts are acceptable in the eyes of God, focused on determining whether a proper causa belli or basis for war exists, and then whether a legitimate authority declares and leads the war. Augustine masterfully integrated aspects of the Old and New Testaments to create a lasting and compelling case for his definition of justified violence. Although at different times and places his theology has been used to support a variety of different attitudes, the profound influence of his work on the medieval church’s evolving position on violence is clear.

The article compares a recent aerial photograph of the lowlands of the Isle of Anglesey area with a German surveillance photograph from 1941. The authors aim to infer the environmental changes made to this sand dune and lake system as a direct consequence of constructing the airfield. Part of Tywyn Trewan, the extensive sand dune system, was completely destroyed in order to create runways and the technical and domestic accommodation to house a strategic airfield. As part of the dredging, six new water bodies with a combined surface area of approximately 6 ha were created.

Real-World Social Cognition: Context Effects in Face and Threat Processing

As borne out by everyday social experience, social cognition is highly dependent on context, modulated by a host of factors that arise from the social environment in which we live. While streamlined laboratory research provides excellent experimental control, it can be limited to telling us about the capabilities of the brain under artificial conditions, rather than elucidating the processes that come into play in the real world. Consideration of the impact of ecologically valid contextual cues on social cognition will improve the generalizability of social neuroscience findings also to pathology, e.g., to psychiatric illnesses. To help bridge between laboratory research and social cognition as we experience it in the real world, this thesis investigates three themes: (1) increasing the naturalness of stimuli with richer contextual cues, (2) the potentially special contextual case of social cognition when two people interact directly, and (3) a third theme of experimental believability, which runs in parallel to the first two themes. Focusing on the first two themes, in work with two patient populations, we explore neural contributions to two topics in social cognition. First, we document a basic approach bias in rare patients with bilateral lesions of the amygdala. This finding is then related to the contextual factor of ambiguity, and further investigated together with other contextual cues in a sample of healthy individuals tested over the internet, finally yielding a hierarchical decision tree for social threat evaluation. Second, we demonstrate that neural processing of eye gaze in brain structures related to face, gaze, and social processing is differently modulated by the direct presence of another live person. This question is investigated using fMRI in people with autism and controls. Across a range of topics, we demonstrate that two themes of ecological validity — integration of naturalistic contextual cues, and social interaction — influence social cognition, that particular brain structures mediate this processing, and that it will be crucial to study interaction in order to understand disorders of social interaction such as autism.

Esporte contemporâneo: um novo templo do capital monopolista

Esta pesquisa teve por objetivo abrir uma discussão sobre o papel do esporte contemporâneo junto ao processo de alienação humana em tempos de domínio do capitalismo monopolista e do fortalecimento da ideologia dominante. Para tal, no primeiro capítulo, analisou-se as principais transformações vividas historicamente pelo capitalismo com a intenção de identificar o impacto do capitalismo monopolista sobre o novo ordenamento da humanidade. No segundo capítulo, demonstrou-se como o esporte contemporâneo constituiu-se como uma instituição burguesa, socialmente determinada e integrada ao conjunto de normas, ideias e estratégias inerentes ao modo de produção capitalista, participando do processo de mascaramento da questão social. Destaca-se neste capítulo o uso de fontes documentais que demonstraram como o esporte contemporâneo tem ocupado lugar estratégico tanto junto à produção da ideologia dominante, quanto junto ao controle da queda da taxa de lucro. Identificou-se que sob tais condições o esporte contemporâneo compõe os processos compensatórios frente à queda tendencial da taxa de lucro e, ao mesmo tempo, integra-se ao processo de alienação humana, tendo por maior expressão a sua materialização sob a forma dos megaeventos esportivos. Neste ponto, a pesquisa concentra-se na análise dos megaeventos esportivos no Brasil e na criação das políticas do esporte, desde o primeiro governo Lula da Silva até os dias atuais. Identificou-se que os projetos de desenvolvimento do esporte no país, no período em tela, têm participado do processo de gerenciamento da crise do capital e do refluxo das lutas dos trabalhadores. O último capítulo abordou as particularidades que envolvem a ideologia pós-moderna, tendo por objetivo identificar as relações desta com fenômeno esportivo. Constatou-se que, em tempos de domínio do capitalismo monopolista e de suas políticas neoliberais, as contradições que aguçam o processo de alienação sob o qual encontra-se a classe trabalhadora de todo o mundo, coloca a humanidade em um novo patamar de alienação, ainda mais brutal e desumanizador. Nesta conjuntura, o esporte contemporâneo destaca-se por ser funcional tanto ao mercado globalizado, quanto ao projeto imperialista, impondo-se como instrumento da contenção de conflitos em nome da tolerância e da paz no mundo. A presente pesquisa pôde concluir que as condições impostas pela fase monopolista do capitalismo ocultam a natureza dialética do esporte transforma-o num instrumento eficiente ao projeto dominante de incremento da alienação humana. O esporte, sob a forma assumida na contemporaneidade, não contribui para o avanço da consciência da classe trabalhadora, pois vem colaborando para adiamento do projeto de emancipação da humanidade. Projeto este que só será produzido pela organização consciente da classe trabalhadora em busca da superação do modo de produção capitalista.
