Winter weather in Iowa is often unpredictable and can have an adverse impact on traffic flow. The Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) attempts to lessen the impact of winter weather events on traffic speeds with various proactive maintenance operations. In order to assess the performance of these maintenance operations, it would be beneficial to develop a model for expected speed reduction based on weather variables and normal maintenance schedules. Such a model would allow the Iowa DOT to identify situations in which speed reductions were much greater than or less than would be expected for a given set of storm conditions, and make modifications to improve efficiency and effectiveness. The objective of this work was to predict speed changes relative to baseline speed under normal conditions, based on nominal maintenance schedules and winter weather covariates (snow type, temperature, and wind speed), as measured by roadside weather stations. This allows for an assessment of the impact of winter weather covariates on traffic speed changes, and estimation of the effect of regular maintenance passes. The researchers chose events from Adair County, Iowa and fit a linear model incorporating the covariates mentioned previously. A Bayesian analysis was conducted to estimate the values of the parameters of this model. Specifically, the analysis produces a distribution for the parameter value that represents the impact of maintenance on traffic speeds. The effect of maintenance is not a constant, but rather a value that the researchers have some uncertainty about and this distribution represents what they know about the effects of maintenance. Similarly, examinations of the distributions for the effects of winter weather covariates are possible. Plots of observed and expected traffic speed changes allow a visual assessment of the model fit. Future work involves expanding this model to incorporate many events at multiple locations. This would allow for assessment of the impact of winter weather maintenance across various situations, and eventually identify locations and times in which maintenance could be improved.

Background. Anastomotic leak remains a common and potentially deleterious complication after esophagectomy. Preoperative embolization of the left gastric artery and splenic artery (PAE) has been suggested to lower anastomotic leak rates. We present the results of our 5-year experience with this technique.Methods. All patients undergoing PAE before esophagectomy since introduction of this technique in 2004 were compared in a 1: 2 matched-pair analysis with patients without PAE. Matching criteria were type of anastomosis, neoadjuvant treatment, comorbidity, and age. Data were derived from a retrospective chart review from 2000 to 2006 that was perpetuated as a prospective database up to date. Outcome measures were anastomotic leak, overall complications, and hospital stay.Results. Between 2000 and 2009, 102 patients underwent esophagectomy for cancer in our institution with an overall leak rate of 19% and a mortality of 8%. All 19 patients having PAE since 2004 were successfully matched 1: 2 to 38 control patients without PAE; both groups were similar regarding demographics and operation characteristics. Two PAE (11%) and 8 control patients (21%) had an anastomotic leak, but the difference was statistically not significant (p = 0.469). Overall and major complication rates for PAE and control group were 89% versus 79% (p = 0.469) and 37% versus 34% (p = 1.000), respectively. Median intensive care unit and hospital stay were 3 versus 3 days (p = 1.000) and 22 versus 17 days (p = 0.321), respectively.Conclusions. In our experience, PAE has no significant impact on complications and anastomotic leak in particular after esophagectomy. Morphological transitions are analyzed for a radial multiparticle diffusion-limited aggregation process grown under a convective drift. The introduction of a tangential flow changes the morphology of the diffusion-limited structure, into multiarm structures, inclined opposite to the flow, whose limit consists of single arms, when decreasing density. The case of shear flow is also considered. The anisotropy of the patterns is characterized in terms of a tangential correlation function based analysis. Comparison between the simulation results and preliminary experimental results has been done.

We evaluate the performance of different optimization techniques developed in the context of optical flow computation with different variational models. In particular, based on truncated Newton methods (TN) that have been an effective approach for large-scale unconstrained optimization, we de- velop the use of efficient multilevel schemes for computing the optical flow. More precisely, we evaluate the performance of a standard unidirectional mul- tilevel algorithm - called multiresolution optimization (MR/OPT), to a bidrec- tional multilevel algorithm - called full multigrid optimization (FMG/OPT). The FMG/OPT algorithm treats the coarse grid correction as an optimiza- tion search direction and eventually scales it using a line search. Experimental results on different image sequences using four models of optical flow com- putation show that the FMG/OPT algorithm outperforms both the TN and MR/OPT algorithms in terms of the computational work and the quality of the optical flow estimation.

Rough a global coarse problem. Although these techniques are usually employed for problems in which the fine-scale processes are described by Darcy's law, they can also be applied to pore-scale simulations and used as a mathematical framework for hybrid methods that couples a Darcy and pore scales. In this work, we consider a pore-scale description of fine-scale processes. The Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved in the pore geometry to compute the velocity field and obtain generalized permeabilities. In the case of two-phase flow, the dynamics of the phase interface is described by the volume of fluid method with the continuum surface force model. The MsFV method is employed to construct an algorithm that couples a Darcy macro-scale description with a pore-scale description at the fine scale. The hybrid simulations results presented are in good agreement with the fine-scale reference solutions. As the reconstruction of the fine-scale details can be done adaptively, the presented method offers a flexible framework for hybrid modeling.

This study was carried out to assess the genetic variability of ten "cagaita" tree (Eugenia dysenterica) populations in Southeastern Gois. Fifty-four randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) loci were used to characterize the population genetic variability, using the analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA). A phiST value of 0.2703 was obtained, showing that 27.03% and 72.97% of the genetic variability is present among and within populations, respectively. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) among the genetic distances matrix (1 - Jaccard similarity index) and the geographic distances were estimated, and a strong positive correlation was detected. Results suggest that these populations are differentiating through a stochastic process, with restricted and geographic distribution dependent gene flow.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate how hospital capacity was managed focusing on standardizing the admission and discharge processes. Methods: This study was set in a 900-bed university affiliated hospital of the National Health Service, near Barcelona (Spain). This is a cross-sectional study of a set of interventions which were gradually implemented between April and December 2008. Mainly, they were focused on standardizing the admission and discharge processes to improve patient flow. Primary administrative data was obtained from the 2007 and 2009 Hospital Database. Main outcome measures were median length of stay, percentage of planned discharges, number of surgery cancellations and median number of delayed emergency admissions at 8:00 am. For statistical bivariate analysis, we used a Chi-squared for linear trend for qualitative variables and a Wilcoxon signed ranks test and a MannWhitney test for non-normal continuous variables. Results: The median patients global length of stay was 8.56 days in 2007 and 7.93 days in 2009 (p<0.051). The percentage of patients admitted the same day as surgery increased from 64.87% in 2007 to 86.01% in 2009 (p<0.05). The number of cancelled interventions due to lack of beds was 216 patients in 2007 and 42 patients in 2009. The median number of planned discharges went from 43.05% in 2007 to 86.01% in 2009 (p<0.01). The median number of emergency patients waiting for an in-hospital bed at 8:00 am was 5 patients in 2007 and 3 patients in 2009 (p<0.01). Conclusions: In conclusion, standardization of admission and discharge processes are largely in our control. There is a significant opportunity to create important benefits for increasing bed capacity and hospital throughput.

Soils on gypsum are well known in dry climates, but were very little described in temperate climate, and never in Switzerland. This study aims to describe soils affected by gypsum in temperate climate and to understand their pedogenesis using standard laboratory analyzes performed on ten Swiss soils located on gypsum outcrops. In parallel, phytosociological relevs described the vegetation encountered in gypsiferous grounds. Gypsification process (secondary gypsum enrichment by precipitation) was observed in all soils. It was particularly important in regions where potential evapotranspiration exceed strongly precipitations in summer (central Valais, Chablais under influence of warm wind). Gypsum contents were regularly measured above 20% in deep horizons, and exceeded locally 70%, building a white, indurate horizon. However, the absence of such a gypsic horizon in the top soil hindered the use of gypsosol (according to the Rfrentiel pdologique, BAIZE & GIRARD 2009), the typical name of soils affected by gypsum, but restricted to dry regions. As all soils had a high content of magnesium carbonates, they were logically classified in the group of DOLOMITOSOLS. However, according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (IUSS 2014), five soils can be classified among the Gypsisols, criteria being here less restricting. These soils are characterized by a coarse texture and a particulate brittle structure making a filtering substrate. They allow water to flow easily taking nutrients. They are not retained by clay, which does generally not exceed 1% of the fine material. The saturation of calcium blocks the breakdown of organic matter. Moreover, these soils are often rejuvenated by erosion caused by the rough relief due to gypsum (landslides, sinkholes, cliffs and slopes). Hence, the vegetation is mainly characterized by calcareous and drought tolerant species, with mostly xerothermophilic beech (Cephalanthero-Fagenion) and pine forests (Erico-Pinion sylvestris) in lowlands, or subalpine heathlands (Ericion) and dry calcareous grasslands (Caricion firmae) in higher elevations.

BACKGROUND: This study validates the use of phycoerythrin (PE) and allophycocyanin (APC) for fluorescence energy transfer (FRET) analyzed by flow cytometry. METHODS: FRET was detected when a pair of antibody conjugates directed against two noncompetitive epitopes on the same CD8alpha chain was used. FRET was also detected between antibody conjugate pairs specific for the two chains of the heterodimeric alpha (4)beta(1) integrin. Similarly, the association of T-cell receptor (TCR) with a soluble antigen ligand was detected by FRET when anti-TCR antibody and MHC class I/peptide complexes (<<tetramers>>) were used. RESULTS: FRET efficiency was always less than 10%, probably because of steric effects associated with the size and structure of PE and APC. Some suggestions are given to take into account this and other effects (e.g., donor and acceptor concentrations) for a better interpretation of FRET results obtained with this pair of fluorochromes. CONCLUSIONS: We conclude that FRET assays can be carried out easily with commercially available antibodies and flow cytometers to study arrays of multimolecular complexes.

The orchestration of collaborative learning processes in face-to-facephysical settings, such as classrooms, requires teachers to coordinate students indicating them who belong to each group, which collaboration areas areassigned to each group, and how they should distribute the resources or roles within the group. In this paper we present an Orchestration Signal system, composed of wearable Personal Signal devices and an Orchestration Signal manager. Teachers can configure color signals in the manager so that they are transmitted to the wearable devices to indicate different orchestration aspects. In particular, the paper describes how the system has been used to carry out a Jigsaw collaborative learning flow in a classroom where students received signals indicating which documents they should read, in which group they were and in which area of the classroom they were expected to collaborate. The evaluation results show that the proposed system facilitates a dynamic, visual and flexible orchestration.

Neuropeptide Y (NPY) is a peptide with vasoconstrictor properties known to be present in the central nervous system as well as in sympathetic nerve endings and the adrenal medulla. The purposes of this study were to investigate in normotensive conscious rats the effects of nonpressor doses of NPY on cardiac output and regional blood flow distribution (using radiolabeled microspheres) as well as on plasma renin activity, plasma catecholamine and vasopressin levels. NPY (0.1 microgram/min) infused i.v. for 30 min modified neither blood pressure nor heart rate. Cardiac index was at comparable levels in NPY- as in vehicle-treated rats (17.7 +/- 1.6, n = 8, vs. 21.3 +/- 0.9 ml/min/100 g, n = 8, mean +/- S.E.M.). There was no significant difference in regional blood flow distribution between the two groups of rats, except for the large intestine (0.42 +/- 0.06 vs. 0.71 +/- 0.1 ml/min/g in NPY- and vehicle-treated rats, respectively, P less than .05). Basal plasma renin activity and catecholamine levels were not modified by NPY whereas plasma vasopressin levels were lower (P less than .05) in rats given NPY (0.76 +/- 0.3 pg/ml, n = 8) than in those having received the vehicle (2.2 +/- 0.4 pg/ml).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
