The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of tooth bleaching with 10% carbamide peroxide (CP) or 35% hydrogen peroxide (HP), with or without quartz-tungsten-halogen light or hybrid source LED/infrared laser exposition on the occurrence duration, intensity and location of tooth sensitivity Forty patients were selected and randomly divided into four groups: GI--home bleaching with CP for 4 hours a day, over the course of 3 weeks; GII--three sessions of HP with three 10-minute applications at each session and no light source; GIII--the same procedure as GII with quartz-tungsten-halogen light irradiation; GIV--the same procedure as GII with LED/laser light irradiation. The evaluation included an appointment with each patient before and after each HP bleaching session or each weekly CP bleaching and 7, 30 and 180 days after the end of treatment. The Kruskal-Wallis test revealed that the duration and intensity of post-treatment sensitivity were significantly higher for HP than for CP (p< 0.05), and symptoms were located predominantly in anterior teeth. All bleaching methods generated sensitivity, which was more frequent in anterior teeth. However, treatment with CP generated lower sensitivity than treatment with HP independently of the light sources.

An alternative for grinding of sintered ceramic is the machining on the green state of the ceramic, which presents easy cutting without the introduction of harmful defects to its mechanical resistance. However, after sintering there are invariably distortions caused by the heterogeneous distribution of density gradients, which are located in the most outlying portions of the compacted workpiece. In order to minimize these density gradients, this study examined the influence of different allowance values and their corresponding influence in distortion after sintering alumina specimens with 99.8 % purity by turning operation using cemented carbide tool. Besides distortion, other output variables were analyzed, such as tool wear, cutting force and surface roughness of green and sintered ceramics. Results showed a distortion reduction up to 81.4%. Green machining is beneficial for reducing surface roughness in both green and sintered states. Cutting tool wear has a direct influence on surface roughness and cutting force.

Metal machining is the complex process due the used cutting parameters. In metal cutting process, materials of workpiece differ widely in their ability to deform plastically, to fracture and to sustain tensile stresses. Moreover, the material involved in the process has a great influence in these operations. The Ti-6Al-4V alloy is very used in the aeronautical industry, mainly in the manufacture of engines, has very important properties such the mechanical and corrosion resistance in high te mperatures. The turning of the Ti-Al-4V alloy is very difficult due the rapid tool wear. Such behavior result of the its low thermal conductivity in addition the high reactivity with the cutting tool. The formed chip is segmented and regions of the large deformation named shear bands plows formed. The machinability of the cutting process can be evaluated by several measures including power consume, machined surface quality, tool wear, tool life, microstructure and morphology of the obtained chip. This paper studies the effect of cutting parameters, speed and feed rates, in the tool wear and chip properties using uncoating cemented carbide tool. Microe-structural characterization of the chip and tool wear was performed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Light Optical Mcroscopy (LOM).

The growing demand for steels with tighter compositional specifications led the Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional (CSN) to develop more efficient processes. To solve this problem this paper aims to identify the operational variables more impacting in the desulfurization process, specifically in torpedo car, as well as its causes and solutions. Then select and test, with laboratorial and industrial tests, desulfurizing agents based of CaC 2, CaO, CaCO3, and Mg to assess the cost per quantity of product desulfurized. The mixture with best results was not that one with highest content of CaC2. It is believed that this mixture showed better efficiency because of the increased agitation of the bath, produced by the releasing of gas from compound CaCO3 present in this mixture. New assays with HepG2 cells indicate that Indigo Carmine (IC), a dye that is widely used as additive in many food and pharmaceutical industries exhibited cytotoxic effects. This work describes the development of a bicomponent nanostructured Ti/TiO2/WO3 electrode prepared by template method and investigates its efficiency in a photoelectrocatalytic method by using visible light irradiation and applied potential of 1V. After 2h of treatment there are reduction of 97% discoloration, 62% of mineralization and formation of three byproducts assigned as: 2-amine-5-sulfo-benzoic acid, 2,3-dioxo-14-indole-5-sulfonic acid, and 2-amino-α-oxo-5-sulfo-benzeneacetic acid were identified by HPLC-MS/MS. But, cytotoxicity was completely removed after 120min of treatment. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd.

Secondary phases such as Laves and carbides are formed during the final solidification stages of nickel based superalloy coatings deposited during the gas tungsten arc welding cold wire process. However, when aged at high temperatures, other phases can precipitate in the microstructure, like the γ″ and δ phases. This work presents a new application and evaluation of artificial intelligent techniques to classify (the background echo and backscattered) ultrasound signals in order to characterize the microstructure of a Ni-based alloy thermally aged at 650 and 950 °C for 10, 100 and 200 h. The background echo and backscattered ultrasound signals were acquired using transducers with frequencies of 4 and 5 MHz. Thus with the use of features extraction techniques, i.e.; detrended fluctuation analysis and the Hurst method, the accuracy and speed in the classification of the secondary phases from ultrasound signals could be studied. The classifiers under study were the recent optimum-path forest (OPF) and the more traditional support vector machines and Bayesian. The experimental results revealed that the OPF classifier was the fastest and most reliable. In addition, the OPF classifier revealed to be a valid and adequate tool for microstructure characterization through ultrasound signals classification due to its speed, sensitivity, accuracy and reliability. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Surface defects are extremely important in mechanical characterization of several different materials. Therefore, the analysis of surface finishing is essential for a further simulation of surface mechanical properties in a customized project in materials science and technology. One of the methods commonly employed for such purpose is the statistical mapping of different sample surface regions using the depth from focus technique. The analysis is usually performed directly from the elevation maps which are obtained from the digital image processing. In this paper, the possibility of quantifying the surface heterogeneity of Silicon Carbide porous ceramics by elevation map histograms is presented. The advantage of this technique is that it allows the qualitative or quantitative verification of all surface image fields that cannot be done by using the Surface Plot plugin of image J™ platform commonly used in digital image processing. © 2012 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC.

The corrosion behaviour of metal matrix composites (MMCs) is strictly linked with the presence of heterogeneities such as reinforcement phase, microcrevices, porosity, secondary phase precipitates, and interaction products. Most of the literature related to corrosion behaviour of aluminium matrix composites (AMCs) is focused on SiC reinforced AMCs. On the other hand, there is very limited information available in the literature related to the tribocorrosion behaviour of AMCs. Therefore, the present work aims to investigate corrosion and tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy matrix composites reinforced with B4C particulates. Corrosion behaviour of 15 and 19% (vol) B4C reinforced Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix composites and the base alloy was investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution by performing immersion tests and potentiodynamic polarisation tests. Tribocorrosion behaviour of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy and its composites were also investigated in 0.05M NaCl solution. The tests were carried out against alumina ball using a reciprocating ball-on-plate tribometer. Electrochemical measurements were performed before, during, and after the sliding tests together with the recording of the tangential force. Results suggest that particle addition did not affect significantly the tendency of corrosion of Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy without mechanical interactions. During the tribocorrosion tests, the counter material was found to slide mainly on the B4C particles, which protected the matrix alloy from severe wear damage. Furthermore, the wear debris were accumulated on the worn surfaces and entrapped between the reinforcing particles. Therefore, the tendency of corrosion and the corrosion rate decreased in Al-Si-Cu-Mg matrix B4C reinforced composites during the sliding in 0.05M NaCl solution. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.

Objectives: This study evaluated the microtensile bond strength (MTBS) of non-aged and aged resin-based composites (RBC) (nanohybrid and nanofilled) after two surface conditioning methods, repaired using the composite of the same kind or a microhybrid composite. Materials and methods: Nanohybrid (Tetric EvoCeram-TE) and nanofilled (Filtek Supreme-FS) RBC blocks (5 × 5 × 6 mm) (N = 128) were fabricated and randomly divided into two groups: (a) no ageing (control group) and (b) ageing (5.000 thermocycling, 5-55 °C). RBC surfaces were polished by up to 1,200-grit silicone carbide papers and conditioned with either (a) air abrasion with 30-μm SiO2 particles (CoJet Sand) for 4 s + silane coupling agent (ESPE-Sil) + adhesive resin (VisioBond) (n = 16) or (b) adhesive application only (Multilink A+B for TE; Adper ScotchBond 1XT for FS) (n = 16). In half of the groups, repair resin of the same kind with the RBC and, in the other half, a different kind of composite (microhybrid, Quadrant Anterior Shine-AS) with its corresponding adhesive (Quadrant UniBond) was used. The specimens were submitted to MTBS test (0.5 mm/min). Data were analysed using three-way ANOVA and Tukey's tests. Degree of conversion (DC) of non-aged and aged resin composites (TE, FS) (n = 3 per group) was measured by micro-Raman analyses. Results: RBC type (p = 0.001) and ageing affected the MTBS results significantly (p = 0.001). Surface conditioning type did not show significant difference (p = 0.726), but less number of pre-test failures was experienced with the CoJet system compared to adhesive resin application only. Repair strength on aged TE showed significantly less (p < 0.05) MTBS than for FS. FS repaired with the same kind of RBC and adhesive resin presented the highest cohesive failures (43 %). DC was higher for TE (71 %) than for FS (58 %) before ageing. Conclusion: On the aged RBCs, less favourable repair strength could be expected especially for nanohybrid composite. For repair actions, RBC surface conditioning could be accomplished with either adhesive resin application only or with CoJet system, providing that the latter resulted in less pre-test failures. Clinical relevance: Clinicians could condition the resin surface prior to repair or relayering with either CoJet system or adhesive resin application only, depending on the availability of the system. © 2012 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

Tungsten oxide/titania (WO3/TiO2) nanopowders were synthesized by the polymeric precursor method which varied the WO3 content between 0 and 10 mol%. The powders were thermally treated in a conventional furnace and their structural, microstructural and electric properties were evaluated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectrometry, N 2 physisorption, NH3 chemisorption, temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy (XANES) in situ XANES and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). XRD and Raman spectrometry confirmed the homogeneous distribution of an amorphous WO3 phase in the TiO 2 matrix which stabilized the anatase phase through the generation of [TiO5·V0] or [TiO5·V 0] complex sites. Conventional TPR-H2 (temperature programmed reduction) along with XANES TPR-H2 and XANES TPR-EtOH showed that WO3/TiO2 sample reduction occurs through the formation of these complex clusters. Moreover, the addition of WO3 promoted an increase in the surface acidity of doped samples as revealed by NH3 chemisorption. The WO3/TiO2 bulk-ceramic samples were further used to estimate their potential application in a humidity sensor in the range of 15-85% relative humidity. Probable reasons that lead to the different humidity sensor responses of samples were given based on the structural and surface characterizations. Correlation between the sensing performance of the sensor and its structural features are also discussed. Although all samples responded as a humidity sensor, the W2T sample (2 mol% added WO3) excelled for sensitivity due to the increase in acid sites, optimum mean pore size and pore size distribution. © 2013 Elsevier B.V.
