The role of FSH and diurnal testosterone rhythms in specific germ cell transformations during spermatogenesis were investigated using DNA flow cytometry and morphometry of the seminiferous epithelium of the adult male bonnet monkey (Macaca radiata), the endogenous hormone levels of which were altered by two different protocols. (1) Active immunization of five monkeys for 290 days using ovine FSH adsorbed on Alhydrogel resulted in the neutralization of endogenous FSH, leaving the LH and diurnal testosterone rhythms normal. (2) Desensitization of the pituitary gonadotrophs of ten monkeys by chronically infusing gonadotrophin-releasing hormone analogue, buserelin (50 micrograms/day release rate), via an Alzet pump implant (s.c.) led to a 60-80% reduction in LH and FSH as well as total abolition of testosterone rhythms. The basal testosterone level (3.3 +/- 2.0 micrograms/l), however, was maintained in this group by way of an s.c. testosterone silicone elastomer implant. Both of the treatments caused significant (P < 0.01) nearly identical reduction in testicular biopsy scores, mitotic indices and daily sperm production rates compared with respective controls. The germ cell DNA flow cytometric profiles of the two treatment groups, however, were fundamentally different from each other. The pituitary-desensitized group exhibited a significant (P < 0.001) increase in 2C (spermatogonial) and decrease in 1C (round spermatid) populations while S-phase (preleptotene spermatocytes) and 4C (primary spermatocytes) populations were normal, indicating an arrest in meiosis caused presumably by the lack of increment in nocturnal serum testosterone. In contrast, in the FSH-immunized group, at day 80 when the FSH deprivation was total, the primary block appeared to be at the conversion of spermatogonia (2C) to cells in S-phase and primary spermatocytes (4C reduced by > 90%). In addition, at this time, although the round spermatid (1C) population was reduced by 65% (P < 0.01) the elongate spermatid (HC) population showed an increase of 52% (P < 0.05). This, taken together with the fact that sperm output in the ejaculate is reduced by 80%, suggests a blockade in spermiogenesis and spermiation. Administration of booster injections of oFSH at time-points at which the antibody titre was markedly low (at days 84 and 180) resulted in a transient resurgence in spermatogenesis (at day 180 and 228), and this again was blocked by day 290 when the FSH antibody titre increased.

It is observed that general explicit guidance schemes exhibit numerical instability close to the injection point. This difficulty is normally attributed to the demand for exact injection which, in turn, calls for finite corrections to be enforced in a relatively short time. The deviations in vehicle state which need corrective maneuvers are caused by the off-nominal operating conditions. Hence, the onset of terminal instability depends on the type of off-nominal conditions encountered. The proposed separate terminal guidance scheme overcomes the above difficulty by minimizing a quadratic penalty on injection errors rather than demanding an exact injection. There is also a special requirement in the terminal phase for the faster guidance computations. The faster guidance computations facilitate a more frequent guidance update enabling an accurate terminal thrust cutoff. The objective of faster computations is realized in the terminal guidance scheme by employing realistic assumptions that are accurate enough for a short terminal trajectory. It is observed from simulations that one of the guidance parameters (P) related to the thrust steering angular rates can indicate the onset of terminal instability due to different off-nominal operating conditions. Therefore, the terminal guidance scheme can be dynamically invoked based on monitoring of deviations in the lone parameter P.

The formal total synthesis of (+)-didemniserinolipid B, a marine tunicate possessing a 6,8-dioxabicyclo3.2.1]octane framework, was accomplished starting from L-(+)-tartaric acid. The key transformations in the synthesis include the elaboration of a gamma-hydroxy-amide readily obtained by desymmetrization of tartaric acid bis-amide via the controlled addition of a Grignard reagent followed by stereoselective reduction of the resulting ketone. The no-hiding theorem says that if any physical process leads to bleaching of quantum information from the original system, then it must reside in the rest of the Universe with no information being hidden in the correlation between these two subsystems. Here, we report an experimental test of the no-hiding theorem with the technique of nuclear magnetic resonance. We use the quantum state randomization of a qubit as one example of the bleaching process and show that the missing information can be fully recovered up to local unitary transformations in the ancilla qubits.
A canonical formulation of the direct position kinematics problem for a general 6-6 stewart platform
Resumo:
This paper deals with the direct position kinematics problem of a general 6-6 Stewart platform, the complete solution of which is not reported in the literature until now and even establishing the number of possible solutions for the general case has remained an unsolved problem for a long period. Here a canonical formulation of the direct position kinematics problem for a general 6-6 Stewart platform is presented. The kinematic equations are expressed as a system of six quadratic and three linear equations in nine unknowns, which has a maximum of 64 solutions. Thus, it is established that the mechanism, in general, can have up to 64 closures. Further reduction of the system is shown arriving at a set of three quartic equations in three unknowns, the solution of which will yield the assembly configurations of the general Stewart platform with far less computational effort compared to earlier models.

Backlund transformations relating the solutions of linear PDE with variable coefficients to those of PDE with constant coefficients are found, generalizing the study of Varley and Seymour [2]. Auto-Backlund transformations are also determined. To facilitate the generation of new solutions via Backlund transformation, explicit solutions of both classes of the PDE just mentioned are found using invariance properties of these equations and other methods. Some of these solutions are new.

In this paper, we show the limitations of the traditional charge linearization techniques for modeling terminal charges of the independent double-gate metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistors. Based on our recent computationally efficient Poisson solution for independent double gate transistors, we propose a new charge linearization technique to model the terminal charges and transcapacitances. We report two different types of quasistatic large-signal models for the long-channel device. In the first type, the terminal charges are expressed as closed-form functions of the source- and drain-end inversion charge densities and found to be accurate when the potential distribution at source end of the channel is hyperbolic in nature. The second type, which is found to be accurate in all regimes of operations, is based on the quadratic spline collocation technique and requires the input voltage equation to be solved two more times, apart from the source and drain ends.

This paper presents a dan-based evolutionary approach for solving control problems. Three selected control problems, viz. linear-quadratic, harvest, and push-cart problems, are solved using the proposed approach. Results are compared with those of the evolutionary programming (EP) approach. In most of the cases, the proposed approach is successful in obtaining (near) optimal solutions for these selected problems.

The bending rigidity kappa of bilayer membranes was studied with coarse grained soft repulsive potentials using dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulations. Using a modified Andersen barostat to maintain the bilayers in a tensionless state, the bending rigidity was obtained from a Fourier analysis of the height fluctuations. From simulations carried out over a wide range of membrane thickness, the continuum scaling relation kappa proportional to d(2) was captured for both the L-alpha and L-beta phases. For membranes with 4 to 6 tail beads, the bending rigidity in the L-beta phase was found to be 10-15 times higher than that observed for the L-alpha phase. From the quadratic scalings obtained, a six fold increase in the area stretch modulus, k(A) was observed across the transition. The magnitude of increase in both kappa and k(A) from the L-alpha to the L-beta phase is consistent with current experimental observations in lipid bilayers and to our knowledge provides for the first time a direct evaluation of the mechanical properties in the L-beta phase.

Diabetes is a long-term disease during which the body's production and use of insulin are impaired, causing glucose concentration level to increase in the bloodstream. Regulating blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible leads to a substantial decrease in long-term complications of diabetes. In this paper, an intelligent online feedback-treatment strategy is presented for the control of blood glucose levels in diabetic patients using single network adaptive critic (SNAC) neural networks (which is based on nonlinear optimal control theory). A recently developed mathematical model of the nonlinear dynamics of glucose and insulin interaction in the blood system has been revised and considered for synthesizing the neural network for feedback control. The idea is to replicate the function of pancreatic insulin, i.e. to have a fairly continuous measurement of blood glucose and a situation-dependent insulin injection to the body using an external device. Detailed studies are carried out to analyze the effectiveness of this adaptive critic-based feedback medication strategy. A comparison study with linear quadratic regulator (LQR) theory shows that the proposed nonlinear approach offers some important advantages such as quicker response, avoidance of hypoglycemia problems, etc. Robustness of the proposed approach is also demonstrated from a large number of simulations considering random initial conditions and parametric uncertainties. In this paper, the linear dynamics and active control of a string travelling with uniform velocity is presented. Discrete elastic supports are introduced along the length of the string. Finite element formulation is adopted to obtain the governing equations of motion. The velocity of translation introduces gyroscopic terms in the system equations. The effect of translation and the discrete elastic supports on the free vibration solution is studied. The solution is utilized in actively controlling the string vibrations due to an initial disturbance. The control, affected in modal space, is optimal with respect to a quadratic performance index. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the control strategy in regulating the travelling string vibrations.

We report the Brownian dynamics simulation results on the translational and bond-angle-orientational correlations for charged colloidal binary suspensions as the interparticle interactions are increased to form a crystalline (for a volume fraction phi = 0.2) or a glassy (phi = 0.3) state. The translational order is quantified in terms of the two- and four-point density autocorrelation functions whose comparisons show that there is no growing correlation length near the glass transition. The nearest-neighbor orientational order is determined in terms of the quadratic rotational invariant Q(l) and the bond-orientational correlation functions g(l)(t). The l dependence of Q(l) indicates that icosahedral (l = 6) order predominates at the cost of the cubic order (l = 4) near the glass as well as the crystal transition. The density and orientational correlation functions for a supercooled liquid freezing towards a glass fit well to the streched-exponential form exp[-(t/tau)(beta)]. The average relaxation times extracted from the fitted stretched-exponential functions as a function of effective temperatures T* obey the Arrhenius law for liquids freezing to a crystal whereas these obey the Vogel-Tamman-Fulcher law exp[AT(0)*/(T* - T-0*)] for supercooled Liquids tending towards a glassy state. The value of the parameter A suggests that the colloidal suspensions are ''fragile'' glass formers like the organic and molecular liquids.

Studies on the low-humidity (88%) forms of tetragonal and monoclinic lysozyme, resulting from water-mediated transformations, have provided a wealth of information on the variability in protein hydration, its structural consequences and the water structure associated with proteins, in addition to facilitating the delineation of the rigid and the flexible regions in the protein molecule and the invariant features in its hydration shell. Surprisingly, monoclinic lysozyme continues to diffract even when the environmental humidity is drastically reduced, thus permitting the structural study of the enzyme at different levels of hydration. As part of a study in this direction, three very low humidity forms, two of them occuring at a nominal relative humidity of 38% and the other at 5% relative humidity, have been characterized. These have unprecedented low solvent contents of 16.9, 17.6 and 9.4%, respectively, as determined by the Matthews method.

The solution- and melt-phase photochemistry of four trans-benzylidene-d,l-piperitones (1) has been investigated under a variety of conditions. The 1 undergo trans reversible cis isomerization to establish a quasi photostationary state. Further irradiation leads to 2 via oxidative ring closure. Conspicuously absent are dimers (obtained upon irradiation of the neat crystals) and the plausible Norrish Type II photoproducts, 3. Although 1c yields 2c, no evidence for the alternative cyclization route to 2a (requiring loss of HCl) has been observed. Rationalizations for the transformations are presented. The structure of 2b has been determined unambiguously from X-ray crystallographic analysis.

We present a complete solution to the problem of coherent-mode decomposition of the most general anisotropic Gaussian Schell-model (AGSM) beams, which constitute a ten-parameter family. Our approach is based on symmetry considerations. Concepts and techniques familiar from the context of quantum mechanics in the two-dimensional plane are used to exploit the Sp(4, R) dynamical symmetry underlying the AGSM problem. We take advantage of the fact that the symplectic group of first-order optical system acts unitarily through the metaplectic operators on the Hilbert space of wave amplitudes over the transverse plane, and, using the Iwasawa decomposition for the metaplectic operator and the classic theorem of Williamson on the normal forms of positive definite symmetric matrices under linear canonical transformations, we demonstrate the unitary equivalence of the AGSM problem to a separable problem earlier studied by Li and Wolf [Opt. Lett. 7, 256 (1982)] and Gori and Guattari [Opt. Commun. 48, 7 (1983)]. This conn ction enables one to write down, almost by inspection, the coherent-mode decomposition of the general AGSM beam. A universal feature of the eigenvalue spectrum of the AGSM family is noted.
