The purpose of this study is to make a 3-dimensional (3-D) evaluation of the pharyngeal airway space (PAS) in patients with class I, II, and III malocclusion. Sixty patients were evaluated. The patients were divided in 3 groups according to their occlusion classification. The volume and area of PAS were evaluated using the software Dolphin 3-D Imaging in the preoperative period for orthognathic surgery. PAS volume and area were influenced by different patterns of malocclusion. The mean volume and area for class III patients were statistically bigger than for classes I and II patients (P < .001). There was also a significant difference for volume values between class I and II patients, being the bigger volume for the class I patients (P < .05). It was possible to conclude that the class III patients presented a bigger PAS compared with classes I and II patients.

Statement of problem. The retention of an Aramany Class IV removable partial dental prosthesis can be compromised by a lack of support. The biomechanics of this obturator prosthesis result in an unusual stress distribution on the residual maxillary bone. Purpose. This study evaluated the biomechanics of an Aramany Class IV obturator prosthesis with finite element analysis and a digital 3-dimensional (3-D) model developed from a computed tomography scan; bone stress was evaluated according to the load placed on the prosthesis. Material and methods. A 3-D model of an Aramany Class IV maxillary resection and prosthesis was constructed. This model was used to develop a finite element mesh. A 120 N load was applied to the occlusal and incisal platforms corresponding to the prosthetic teeth. Qualitative analysis was based on the scale of maximum principal stress; values obtained through quantitative analysis were expressed in MPa. Results. Under posterior load, tensile and compressive stresses were observed; the tensile stress was greater than the compressive stress, regardless of the bone region, and the greatest compressive stress was observed on the anterior palate near the midline. Under an anterior load, tensile stress was observed in all of the evaluated bone regions; the tensile stress was greater than the compressive stress, regardless of the bone region. Conclusions. The Aramany Class IV obturator prosthesis tended to rotate toward the surgical resection when subjected to posterior or anterior loads. The amount of tensile and compressive stress caused by the Aramany Class IV obturator prosthesis did not exceed the physiological limits of the maxillary bone tissue. The positional relationships among all of the visible organelles in a densely packed region of cytoplasm from an insulin secreting, cultured mammalian cell have been analyzed in three dimensions (3-D) at ≈6 nm resolution. Part of a fast frozen/freeze-substituted HIT-T15 cell that included a large portion of the Golgi ribbon was reconstructed in 3-D by electron tomography. The reconstructed volume (3.1 × 3.2 × 1.2 μm3) allowed sites of interaction between organelles, and between microtubules and organellar membranes, to be accurately defined in 3-D and quantitatively analyzed by spatial density analyses. Our data confirm that the Golgi in an interphase mammalian cell is a single, ribbon-like organelle composed of stacks of flattened cisternae punctuated by openings of various sizes [Rambourg, A., Clermont, Y., & Hermo, L. (1979) Am. J. Anat. 154, 455–476]. The data also show that the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) is a single continuous compartment that forms close contacts with mitochondria, multiple trans Golgi cisternae, and compartments of the endo-lysosomal system. This ER traverses the Golgi ribbon from one side to the other via cisternal openings. Microtubules form close, non-random associations with the cis Golgi, the ER, and endo-lysosomal compartments. Despite the dense packing of organelles in this Golgi region, ≈66% of the reconstructed volume is calculated to represent cytoplasmic matrix. We relate the intimacy of structural associations between organelles in the Golgi region, as quantified by spatial density analyses, to biochemical mechanisms for membrane trafficking and organellar communication in mammalian cells.

A challenge in mesonic three-body decays of heavy mesons is to quantify the contribution of re-scattering between the final mesons. D decays have the unique feature that make them a key to light meson spectroscopy, in particular to access the Kn S-wave phase-shifts. We built a relativis-tic three-body model for the final state interaction in D+ → K -π+π+ decay based on the ladder approximation of the Bethe-Salpeter equation projected on the light-front. The decay amplitude is separated in a smooth term, given by the direct partonic decay amplitude, and a three-body fully interacting contribution, that is factorized in the standard two-meson resonant amplitude times a reduced complex amplitude that carries the effect of the three-body rescattering mechanism. The off-shell reduced amplitude is a solution of an inhomogeneous Faddeev type three-dimensional integral equation, that includes only isospin 1/2 K -π+ interaction in the S-wave channel. The elastic K-π+ scattering amplitude is parameterized according to the LASS data[1]. The integral equation is solved numerically and preliminary results are presented and compared to the experimental data from the E791 Collaboration[2, 3] and FOCUS Collaboration[4, 5].

In the crystal structure of the title compound (systematic name: 2,3-dichlorobenzene-1,4-diol 2,3-dichlorocyclohexa-2,5-diene-1,4-dione monohydrate), C(6)H(4)Cl(2)O(2)center dot C(6)H(2)Cl(2)O(2)center dot H(2)O, the 2,3-dichloro-1,4-hydroquinone donor (D) and the 2,3-dichloro-1,4-benzoquinone acceptor (A) molecules form alternating stacks along [100]. Their molecular planes [maximum deviations for non-H atoms: 0.0133 (14) (D) and 0.0763 (14) angstrom (A)] are inclined to one another by 1.45 (3)degrees and are thus almost parallel. There are pi-pi interactions involving the D and A molecules, with centroid-centroid distances of 3.5043 (9) and 3.9548 (9) angstrom. Intermolecular O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds involving the water molecule and the hydroxy and ketone groups lead to the formation of two-dimensional networks lying parallel to (001). These networks are linked by C-H center dot center dot center dot O interactions, forming a three-dimensional structure.

OBJECTIVES: Due to the high prevalence of renal failure in transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) candidates, a non-contrast MR technique is desirable for pre-procedural planning. We sought to evaluate the feasibility of a novel, non-contrast, free-breathing, self-navigated three-dimensional (SN3D) MR sequence for imaging the aorta from its root to the iliofemoral run-off in comparison to non-contrast two-dimensional-balanced steady-state free-precession (2D-bSSFP) imaging. METHODS: SN3D [field of view (FOV), 220-370 mm(3); slice thickness, 1.15 mm; repetition/echo time (TR/TE), 3.1/1.5 ms; and flip angle, 115°] and 2D-bSSFP acquisitions (FOV, 340 mm; slice thickness, 6 mm; TR/TE, 2.3/1.1 ms; flip angle, 77°) were performed in 10 healthy subjects (all male; mean age, 30.3 ± 4.3 yrs) using a 1.5-T MRI system. Aortic root measurements and qualitative image ratings (four-point Likert-scale) were compared. RESULTS: The mean effective aortic annulus diameter was similar for 2D-bSSFP and SN3D (26.7 ± 0.7 vs. 26.1 ± 0.9 mm, p = 0.23). The mean image quality of 2D-bSSFP (4; IQR 3-4) was rated slightly higher (p = 0.03) than SN3D (3; IQR 2-4). The mean total acquisition time for SN3D imaging was 12.8 ± 2.4 min. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that a novel SN3D sequence allows rapid, free-breathing assessment of the aortic root and the aortoiliofemoral system without administration of contrast medium. KEY POINTS: • The prevalence of renal failure is high among TAVR candidates. • Non-contrast 3D MR angiography allows for TAVR procedure planning. • The self-navigated sequence provides a significantly reduced scanning time.

A complex iridium oxide β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} crystallizes in a hyperhoneycomb structure, a three-dimensional analogue of honeycomb lattice, and is found to be a spin-orbital Mott insulator with J_{eff}=1/2 moment. Ir ions are connected to the three neighboring Ir ions via Ir-O_{2}-Ir bonding planes, which very likely gives rise to bond-dependent ferromagnetic interactions between the J_{eff}=1/2 moments, an essential ingredient of Kitaev model with a spin liquid ground state. Dominant ferromagnetic interaction between J_{eff}=1/2 moments is indeed confirmed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility χ(T) which shows a positive Curie-Weiss temperature θ_{CW}∼+40 K. A magnetic ordering with a very small entropy change, likely associated with a noncollinear arrangement of J_{eff}=1/2 moments, is observed at T_{c}=38 K. With the application of magnetic field to the ordered state, a large moment of more than 0.35 μ_{B}/Ir is induced above 3 T, a substantially polarized J_{eff}=1/2 state. We argue that the close proximity to ferromagnetism and the presence of large fluctuations evidence that the ground state of hyperhoneycomb β-Li_{2}IrO_{3} is located in close proximity of a Kitaev spin liquid.

The title 2:1 complex of 3-nitrophenol (MNP) and 4,4'-bipyridyl N, N'-dioxide (DPNO), 2C(6)H(5)NO(3)center dot C(10)H(8)N(2)O(2) or 2MNP center dot DPNO, crystallizes as a centrosymmetric three-component adduct with a dihedral angle of 59.40 (8)degrees between the planes of the benzene rings of MNP and DPNO (the DPNO moiety lies across a crystallographic inversion centre located at the mid-point of the C-C bond linking its aromatic rings). The complex owes its formation to O-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds [O center dot center dot center dot O = 2.605 (3) angstrom]. Molecules are linked by intermolecular C-H center dot center dot center dot O and C-H center dot center dot center dot N interactions forming R(2)(1) (6) and R(2)(2) (10) rings, and R(6)(6) (34) and R(4)(4) (26) macro-rings, all of which are aligned along the [(1) over bar 01] direction, and R(2)(2) (10) and R(2)(1) (7) rings aligned along the [010] direction. The combination of chains of rings along the [(1) over bar 01] and [010] directions generates the three-dimensional structure. A total of 27 systems containing the DNPO molecule and forming molecular complexes of an organic nature were analysed and compared with the structural characteristics of the dioxide reported here. The N-O distance [1.325 (2) angstrom] depends not only on the interactions involving the O atom at the N-O group, but also on the structural ordering and additional three-dimensional interactions in the crystal structure. A density functional theory (DFT) optimized structure at the B3LYP/6-311G(d,p) level is compared with the molecular structure in the solid state.

PURPOSE: To determine the value of applying finger trap distraction during direct MR arthrography of the wrist to assess intrinsic ligament and triangular fibrocartilage complex (TFCC) tears. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty consecutive patients were prospectively investigated by three-compartment wrist MR arthrography. Imaging was performed with 3-T scanners using a three-dimensional isotropic (0.4 mm) T1-weighted gradient-recalled echo sequence, with and without finger trap distraction (4 kg). In a blind and independent fashion, two musculoskeletal radiologists measured the width of the scapholunate (SL), lunotriquetral (LT) and ulna-TFC (UTFC) joint spaces. They evaluated the amount of contrast medium within these spaces using a four-point scale, and assessed SL, LT and TFCC tears, as well as the disruption of Gilula's carpal arcs. RESULTS: With finger trap distraction, both readers found a significant increase in width of the SL space (mean Δ = +0.1mm, p ≤ 0.040), and noticed more contrast medium therein (p ≤ 0.035). In contrast, the differences in width of the LT (mean Δ = +0.1 mm, p ≥ 0.057) and UTFC (mean Δ = 0mm, p ≥ 0.728) spaces, as well as the amount of contrast material within these spaces were not statistically significant (p = 0.607 and ≥ 0.157, respectively). Both readers detected more SL (Δ = +1, p = 0.157) and LT (Δ = +2, p = 0.223) tears, although statistical significance was not reached, and Gilula's carpal arcs were more frequently disrupted during finger trap distraction (Δ = +5, p = 0.025). CONCLUSION: The application of finger trap distraction during direct wrist MR arthrography may enhance both detection and characterisation of SL and LT ligament tears by widening the SL space and increasing the amount of contrast within the SL and LT joint spaces.

This paper explores the factors that determine firm’s R&D cooperation with different partners, paying special attention on the role of tertiary education (degree and PhDs level) in facilitating the connection between the firms and the to scientific bodies (technology centres, public research centres and universities). Here, we attempt to answer two questions. First, are innovative firms that carry out internal and external R&D activities more likely to cooperate on R&D projects with other partners? Second, do Spanish innovative firms with a high participation of researchers with degrees or PhDs tend to cooperate more with scientific partners? To answer both questions we apply a three-dimensional approach on a firm level Panel Data with a sample of 4.998 manufacturing and services Spanish firms. First, we run a complementary test between external R&D acquisition and skilled research workers and find that firms which carry out external R&D activities obtain a greater return on R&D cooperation when they have skilled workers in R&D, especially in high-tech manufactures and KIS services. Second, we carry out a 2-step tobit model to estimate, in the first stage, the determinants that explain whether Spanish innovative firms cooperate or not; and in the second stage the factors that affect the choice of partners. And third, we apply an ordered probit model to test the marginal effects of explanatory variables on the different partners. Here we contrast some of the most interesting empirical hypotheses of previous studies, and which emphasize the role of employees with degrees and PhDs in facilitating cooperative R&D between firms and scientific partners. PURPOSE: The purposes of this study were to (1) develop a high-resolution 3-T magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) technique with an in-plane resolution approximate to that of multidetector coronary computed tomography (MDCT) and a voxel size of 0.35 × 0.35 × 1.5 mm³ and to (2) investigate the image quality of this technique in healthy participants and preliminarily in patients with known coronary artery disease (CAD). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 3-T coronary MRA technique optimized for an image acquisition voxel as small as 0.35 × 0.35 × 1.5 mm³ (high-resolution coronary MRA [HRC]) was implemented and the coronary arteries of 22 participants were imaged. These included 11 healthy participants (average age, 28.5 years; 5 men) and 11 participants with CAD (average age, 52.9 years; 5 women) as identified on MDCT. In addition, the 11 healthy participants were imaged using a method with a more common spatial resolution of 0.7 × 1 × 3 mm³ (regular-resolution coronary MRA [RRC]). Qualitative and quantitative comparisons were made between the 2 MRA techniques. RESULTS: Normal vessels and CAD lesions were successfully depicted at 350 × 350 μm² in-plane resolution with adequate signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and contrast-to-noise ratio. The CAD findings were consistent among MDCT and HRC. The HRC showed a 47% improvement in sharpness despite a reduction in SNR (by 72%) and in contrast-to-noise ratio (by 86%) compared with the regular-resolution coronary MRA. CONCLUSION: This study, as a first step toward substantial improvement in the resolution of coronary MRA, demonstrates the feasibility of obtaining at 3 T a spatial resolution that approximates that of MDCT. The acquisition in-plane pixel dimensions are as small as 350 × 350 μm² with a 1.5-mm slice thickness. Although SNR is lower, the images have improved sharpness, resulting in image quality that allows qualitative identification of disease sites on MRA consistent with MDCT.

El diagnòstic mitjançant la imatge mèdica s’ha convertit en una eina fonamental en la pràctica clínica, permet entre altres coses, reconstruir a partir d’un conjunt d’imatges 2D, obtingudes a partir d’aparells de captació, qualsevol part de l’organisme d’un pacient i representar-lo en un model 3D. Sobre aquest model 3D poden realitzar-se diferents operacions que faciliten el diagnòstic i la presa de decisions als especialistes. El projecte que es presenta forma part del desenvolupament de la plataforma informàtica de visualització i tractament de dades mèdiques, anomenada Starviewer, que desenvolupen conjuntament el laboratori de Gràfics i Imatge (GiLab) de la Universitat de Girona i l’ Institut de Diagnòstic per la Imatge (IDI) de l’Hospital Josep Trueta de Girona. En particular, en aquest projecte es centra en el diagnòstic del càncer colorectal i el desenvolupament de mètodes i tècniques de suport al seu diagnòstic. Els dos punts claus en el tractament d’aqueta patologia són: la detecció de les lesions I l’estudi de l’evolució d’aquestes lesions, una vegada s’ha iniciat el tractament tumoral. L’objectiu principal d’aquest projecte és implementar i integrar en la plataforma Starviewer les tècniques de visualització i processament de dades necessàries per donar suport als especialistes en el diagnòstic de les lesions del colon. Donada la dificultat en el processament de les dades reals del budell ens proposem: dissenyar i implementar un sistema per crear models sintètics del budell; estudiar, implementar i avaluar les tècniques de processament d’imatge que calen per segmentar lesions de budell; dissenyar i implementar un sistema d’exploració del budell iintegrar de tots els mòduls implementats en la plataforma starviewer

El projecte desenvolupat ha tractat l’estudi i disseny d’un motor 3D interactiu a la consolaGame Boy Advance (GBA). La GBA disposa d’un processador ARM7TDMI a 16’78Mhz i no disposa de operacions 3D per-hardware, és una consola lenta en comparació lesque podem trobar al mercat d’avui en dia. Aquest treball, va partir de la construcció d’un prototipus ray-casting per-columna. Després,vàrem adaptar-lo a una estructura de portals i sectors. Més tard,es va introduir el mapeig de sostre/terra i de paisatges. Per últim,vàrem introduir efectes a la renderització per donar més realismeal recorregut del món, com il·luminació, objectes, etc.Tot i que es va estudiar l’arquitectura d’un motor eficient, no estenia prou per arribar a tenir un motor interactiu. Una de lestasques més difícils va ser la part de optimització. Peraconseguir-ho s’ha hagut de substituir operacions a temps realcostoses a temps de execució, replantejar parts de l’algorisme per fer-lo més eficient, entre altres

Els sistemes de visió estèreo es basen en la reconstrucció per triangulació a partir de dues càmeres, permetent la representació d’objectes del món real en tres dimensions. L’objectiu d’aquest projecte consisteix a dissenyar i implementar un sistema estèreo amb una sola càmera amb dos petits vidres d’alta transmissivitat davant de la lent, utilitzant la teoria clàssica desenvolupada a partir de dues càmeres. D’aquesta forma obtindrem un sistema molt més compacte que en el cas de tenir dues càmeres, que serà apte per entorns molt reduïts i per escenes molt properes

Actualment ens trobem en un món on tot gira al voltant de les noves tecnologies, i un pilar fonamental és l'oci i l'entreteniment. Això engloba principalment les indústries del cinema, videojocs i realitat virtual. Un dels problemes que tenen aquestes indústries és com crear l'escenari on es produeix la història. L'objectiu d'aquest projecte de final de carrera és crear una eina integrada al skylineEngine, que serveixi per crear edificis de manera procedural, on l'usuari pugui definir l'estètica d'aquest edifici, introduint la seva planta i els perfils adequats. El que s'implementarà serà una eina de modelatge per a dissenyadors, que a partir d'una planta i perfils pugui crear l'edifici.Aquest projecte es desenvoluparà a sobre del mòdul de generació d'edificis del skylineEngine, una eina pel modelatge de ciutats que s'executa sobre el Houdini 3D, que és una plataforma genèrica pel modelatge procedural d'objectes.El desenvolupament d'aquest projecte implica:• Estudi de la plataforma de desenvolupament Houdini 3D i de les llibreries necessàries per la incorporació de scripts Python. Estudi de les EEDD internes de Houdini.• Aprendre i manejar el llenguatge de programació Python.• Estudi del codi de l'article Interactive Architectural Modeling with Procedural Extrusions, per en Tom Kelly i en Peter Wonka, publicat a la revista ACM Transactions on Graphics (2011).• Desenvolupament d'algorismes de conversió de geometria d'una estructura tipus face-vertex a una de tipus half-edge, i viceversa.• Modificació del codi Java per acceptar crides sense interfície d'usuari i amb estructures de dades generades des de Python.• Aprendre el funcionament de la llibreria JPype per permetre enllaçar el Java dins el Python.• Estudi del skylineEngine i de les llibreries per la creació d'edificis.• Integració del resultat dintre del skylineEngine.• Verificació i ajust de les regles i paràmetres de la simulació per a diferents edificis
