Cyber-ambient intelligent training of operators in power systems control centres

Cyber-Physical Systems and Ambient Intelligence are two of the most important and emerging paradigms of our days. The introduction of renewable sources gave origin to a completely different dimension of the distribution generation problem. On the other hand, Electricity Markets introduced a different dimension in the complexity, the economic dimension. Our goal is to study how to proceed with the Intelligent Training of Operators in Power Systems Control Centres, considering the new reality of Renewable Sources, Distributed Generation, and Electricity Markets, under the emerging paradigms of Cyber-Physical Systems and Ambient Intelligence. We propose Intelligent Tutoring Systems as the approach to deal with the intelligent training of operators in these new circumstances.

An intelligent tutoring system for operators��� training in power system control centres

The activity of Control Center operators is important to guarantee the effective performance of Power Systems. Operators��� actions are crucial to deal with incidents, especially severe faults, like blackouts. In this paper we present an Intelligent Tutoring approach for training Portuguese Control Centre operators in tasks like incident analysis and diagnosis, and service restoration of Power Systems. Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) approach is used in the training of the operators, taking into account context awareness and the unobtrusive integration in the working environment.

Clinical Education - a fundamental curricular unit for all health practitioners

Clinical education is recognized as being crucial for the training of health professionals. This subject is debated amongst teachers, students and professionals. Besides the clinical and research skills, we look for other competencies such as oratory, creative thinking or leadership. We present the results of a study with 4th graders. It���s a exploratory study; the main purpose was to evaluate the outcomes of a unit of clinical education prepared according a new set of competencies and methodologies. The competencies were seen as valuable. Organization, leading or supporting a colleague, rethinking a program to serve client and family are equally important.

International mobility in the Pharmacy degree at the school of allied health sciences of Oporto

Background: The Erasmus program is a subprogram of the Lifelong Learning program, exclusive for Higher Education that promotes (among other initiatives), the mobility of students(studies, training or internships). The mobility of students of higher education seeks to improve the quality and development of future professionals, providing a multidisciplinary and multicultural experience. Setting: Academic Pharmacy/Pharmacy Technicians Methods: We conducted a descriptive and transversal study on the implementation of the mobility program and analyze the results, which involved applying a survey to students. Results: Since 2009/2010, the Pharmacy Degree at ESTSP has established 7 SMs protocols resulting in an average mobility of 5 students IN and 7 Students OUT. We have also endeavoured in SMp Protocols for extracurricular training with an average of 3 students OUT. The application process is normally open during the year before the mobility period. For most of the students involved, this was a first time opportunity to be in a foreign country and more than 70% choose the mobility program because it is seen as a possibility to improve their curriculum, for personal development or even to pursue employment opportunities abroad. The mobility for teachers is also encouraged. Conclusions: The exchange of experiences and training, acquired during cooperation activities should be an element of continuous dynamics and institutional affirmation. Initiatives such as the ERASMUS Program contribute to the educational and scientific enrichment, and promote international competitiveness among Higher Education Institutions.

The impact of exercise training on liver transplanted familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP) patients

Liver transplantation is nowadays the only effective answer to adjourn the outcome of functional limitations associated with familial amyloidotic polyneuropathy (FAP), a neurodegenerative disease characterized by sensory and motor polyneuropathies. Nevertheless, there is a detrimental impact associated with the after-surgery period on the fragile physical condition of these patients. Exercise training has been proven to be effective on reconditioning patients after transplantation. However, the effects of exercise training in liver transplanted FAP patients have not been scrutinized yet.

Import��ncia e satisfa����o atribu��das pelos professores universit��rios ��s compet��ncias comunicacionais

O Processo de Bolonha enfatiza as compet��ncias de comunica����o dos estudantes universit��rios, nomeadamente os da sa��de. As conce����es dos professores tendem a variar com a idade e s��o importantes na forma����o das conce����es dos alunos. Objetivos ��� Analisar a import��ncia e a satisfa����o que professores universit��rios atribuem a diversas compet��ncias de comunica����o e a sua rela����o com a idade. Metodologia ��� Foram avaliados 79 professores universit��rios, entre os 29 e os 82 anos (M=41,89; DP=9,99), maioritariamente do sexo feminino (69,6%), atrav��s de um Question��rio S��ciodemogr��fico e das Escalas de Import��ncia (EI) e Satisfa����o (ES) do Question��rio de Compet��ncias de Comunica����o (QCC). Resultados ��� Entre 1 a 4 participantes atribu��ram a 11 dos 26 itens da EI e a 7 dos 26 itens da ES o menor valor poss��vel. Houve tamb��m pelo menos um participante a atribuir o maior valor poss��vel a todos os itens da EI (entre 8 a 51 participantes) e da ES (entre 6 a 46 participantes). A compet��ncia ���agradecer��� foi considerada a mais importante e satisfat��ria. A idade n��o se correlacionou com os itens da EI, correlacionando-se com ���responder a perguntas��� (r(78)=0,27, p���0,02) e ���pedir feedback nas rela����es sociais��� (r(78)=0,30, p���0,008) da ES. Dado que compet��ncias imprescind��veis aos profissionais de sa��de obtiveram scores indicadores de baixa import��ncia (e.g., ���discordar���, ���recusar pedidos���, ���fazer pedidos���, ���parafrasear���), considera-se importante trabalhar a perce����o de import��ncia dos professores universit��rios que n��o parece variar com a idade. Compet��ncias importantes para o trabalho do professor (e.g., ���recusar pedidos���, ���pedir mudan��a de comportamento���) obtiveram das m��dias de satisfa����o mais baixas, sugerindo necessidade de treino.

Radiographers and radiation protection: education, training and CPD

The increasing use of ionizing radiation for medical purposes emphasizes the concern about safety and justification of using ionizing radiation. This is linked with the use of new and high-dose X-ray technology (particularly CT). According to the UNSCEAR 2010 Report the total number of diagnostic medical examinations (both medical and dental) is estimated to have risen from 2.4 billion (period 1991���1996) to 3.6 billion (period 1997��� 2008) - a marked increase in collective doses. An appropriate use of technology aiming diagnostic or therapy and respecting the ALARA principle is a mandatory requisite to safely perform any radiological procedure. Radiation protection is thus, a concern of all specialists in the radiology field ( radiologists, radiographers, medical physicists, among other professional groups). The importance of education and training of these professionals in reducing patients��� doses while maintaining the desired level of quality in medical exposures, as well as precise therapeutic treatments is well recognized. Education, training and continuing professional development (CPD) constitute a triad pointing towards the radiographers��� development of competences in the radiation protection field. This presentation excludes the radiographer role and competences in the fields of ultrasonography and MRI.

Literary translation and quality assessment analysis ��� its significance in translation training

This paper aims to highlight the role of translation quality assessment in translation training so as to develop students��� translation competence and skills to face translation problems. An analysis to assess literary translation quality is proposed before proceeding to discuss its pedagogical implementation.
