Imaging and quantifying salt-tracer transport in a riparian groundwater system by means of 3D ERT monitoring

Determining groundwater flow paths of infiltrated river water is necessary for studying biochemical processes in the riparian zone, but their characterization is complicated by strong temporal and spatial heterogeneity. We investigated to what extent repeat 3D surface electrical resistance tomography (ERT) can be used to monitor transport of a salt-tracer plume under close to natural gradient conditions. The aim is to estimate groundwater flow velocities and pathways at a site located within a riparian groundwater system adjacent to the perialpine Thur River in northeastern Switzerland. Our ERT time-lapse images provide constraints on the plume's shape, flow direction, and velocity. These images allow the movement of the plume to be followed for 35 m. Although the hydraulic gradient is only 1.43 parts per thousand, the ERT time-lapse images demonstrate that the plume's center of mass and its front propagate with velocities of 2x10(-4) m/s and 5x10(-4) m/s, respectively. These velocities are compatible with groundwater resistivity monitoring data in two observation wells 5 m from the injection well. Five additional sensors in the 5-30 m distance range did not detect the plume. Comparison of the ERT time-lapse images with a groundwater transport model and time-lapse inversions of synthetic ERT data indicate that the movement of the plume can be described for the first 6 h after injection by a uniform transport model. Subsurface heterogeneity causes a change of the plume's direction and velocity at later times. Our results demonstrate the effectiveness of using time-lapse 3D surface ERT to monitor flow pathways in a challenging perialpine environment over larger scales than is practically possible with crosshole 3D ERT.

U-Pb ages of magmatic rocks of the western Austroalpine Dent-Blanche-Sesia unit

Conventional U-Pb ages on zircon and monazite demonstrate that granites and gabbros intruded during a short time span of 5 Ma between 293 and 288 Ma in several polycyclic basement units of the Western Austroalpine domain. This bimodal activity reflects increasing underplating of an upwelling mantle at the base of a thinning post-Variscan continental crust.

Evolution of the sources of Moroccan volcanism during the Neogene

New major and trace element analyses, Sr-Nd isotopic data and K-40-Ar-40 ages on Neogene and Quaternary lavas from Morocco lead to the conclusion that the observed temporal changes from calc-alkaline to transitional and finally alkaline magmatic activity reflect the contributions of distinct sources. According to our model, magmas originally derived from the melting of an European/Western Mediterranean-type asthenospheric mantle source interact during their ascent with either a subcontinental Ronda - Beni Bousera-/type lithospheric mantle (alkaline magmas) or a lithospheric mantle containing a crustal component, and the overlying continental crust (calc-alkaline and, to a lesser extent, transitional magmas). Actualiser le passé : figures antiques du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance

Résumé : En littérature comme dans les arts figuratifs, voire dans la réalité vécue, l'Antiquité se révèle avoir une proximité plus ou moins grande selon les périodes et les auteurs, mais elle a toujours été présente, toujours féconde. La frontière poreuse entre l'ancien et le moderne fait de l'Antiquité et du Moyen Âge, puis de l'Antiquité et de l'early modern des vases communicants. C'est là une conviction aujourd'hui largement partagée et plusieurs manifestations récentes ont eu pour objet cet aspect-clé de la culture occidentale. Les contributions réunies dans les présents Actes sont le fruit d'un colloque interdisciplinaire de deux jours (13 et 14 mai 2011) organisé par le Centre d'Études Médiévales et Post-Médiévales (CEMEP) de l'Université de Lausanne ; elles ont, chacune, apporté leur pierre à une réflexion en marche en portant des regards croisés sur les formes d'actualisation que connaissent - entre continuités et discontinuités - les figures antiques du Moyen Âge à la Renaissance. CD30 in PTCLS: correlation between RNA and protein levels in a large european series from the LYSA

Introduction: CD22 is expressed on most B-non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL); inotuzumab ozogamicin (INO) is an anti-CD22 antibody conjugated to calicheamicin. This study evaluated the safety and tolerability of INO plus R-CVP in patients (pts) with relapsed/refractory CD22+ B-NHL. Efficacy data were also collected. Methods: Part 1 of this open-label study identified a maximum tolerated dose (MTD) of INO 0.8mg/m,2 on day 2 plus R-CVP (rituximab 375mg/m,2 cyclophosphamide 750mg/m,2 and vincristine 1.4mg/m,2 on day 1; prednisone 40mg/m,2 on days 1-5) every 21 days. Subsequently, pts were enrolled in the MTD confirmation cohort (part 2, n = 10), which required a dose-limiting toxicity rate of <33% in cycle 1 and <4 pts discontinuing prior to cycle 3 due to an adverse event (AE) in the MTD expansion cohort (part 3, n = 22), which explored preliminary activity. Results: Parts 2 and 3 enrolled 32 pts: 16 pts with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, 15 with follicular lymphoma and one with mantle cell lymphoma. Median age was 64.5 years (range 44-81 years); 34% of pts had 1 prior regimen, 34% had 2, 28% had ≥3 and 3% had none (median 2; range 0-6).Median treatment duration was five cycles (range 1-6). Part 2 confirmed the MTD as standard dose R-CVP plus INO 0.8mg/m,2; 2/10 pts had a dose-limiting toxicity (grade 3 increased ALT/AST, grade 4 neutropenia requiring G-CSF). One pt discontinued because of an AE prior to cycle 3. Common treatment-related AEs were thrombocytopenia (78%), neutropenia (66%), fatigue (50%), leukopenia (50%), nausea (41%) and lymphopenia (38%); common grade 3/4 AEs were neutropenia (63%), thrombocytopenia (53%), leukopenia (38%) and lymphopenia (31%). There was one case of treatment-related fatal pneumonia with grade 4 neutropenia. Ten pts discontinued treatment due to AEs; thrombocytopenia/delayed platelet recovery was the leading cause (grade 1/2, n = 6; grade 3/4, n = 3). Objective response rate (ORR) was 77% (n = 24/31 evaluable pts), including 26% (n=8/31) with complete response (CR); three pts had stable disease. Of the pts with follicular lymphoma, ORR was 100% (n = 15/15), including seven pts with CR. Of the pts with diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, ORR was 60% (n = 9/16), including one pt with CR. Conclusions: Results suggest that INOplus R-CVP has acceptable toxicity and promising activity in relapsed/refractory CD22+ B-NHL. The most common grade 3/4 AEs were hematologic. Follow-up for progression-free and overall survival is ongoing.

L'Écriture à rebours. Le Roman de Méliadus du XIIIe au XVIIIe siècle

Continuation elleptique du "Tristan en prose", qui s'inscrit dans l'interstice séparant la naissance de Tristan du remariage de Méliadus avec la fille du roi Hoël, le "Roman de Meliadus" (1235-1240) est une oeuvre demeurée ouverte, de par son inachèvement et de par le dialogue constant qu'il instaure avec les autres romans arthuriens. S'il revendique sa filiation et assume son statut de récit puîné, les réminiscences qu'il exhibe masquent aussi les gauchissements, les infléchissements qui lui permettent de faire du neuf avec du vieux. C'est ce jeu - aux deux sens du terme - que Barbara Wahlen étudie et montre à voir, non seulement dans le "Roman de Meliadus" proprement dit, mais également dans trois de ses relectures, qui actualisent et renouvellent la signification du roman en profondeur. La première est une continuation de la toute fin du XIIIe ou du début du XIVe siècle qui est aujourd'hui conservée par le seul manuscrit Ferrell 5. La deuxième actualisation retenue est celle qu'offre "Meliadus de Leonnoys", l'imprimé publié en 1528 par Galliot du Pré, fruit d'un minutieux travail de découpage et de remontage. La dernière enfin est l'extrait paru en 1776 dans la "Bibliothèque Universelle des Romans".

Non-invasive dry mass determination and monitoring at the single cell level with digital holographic microscopy

Digital holography microscopy (DHM) is an optical microscopy technique which allows recording non-invasively the phase shift induced by living cells with nanometric sensitivity. Here, we exploit the phase signal as an indicator of dry mass (related to the protein concentration). Magma generation at the easternmost section of the Hellenic arc: Hf, Nd, Pb and Sr isotope geochemistry of Nisyros and Yali volcanoes (Greece)

Geochemical and petrographical studies of lavas and ignimbrites from the Quaternary Nisyros-Yali volcanic system in the easternmost part of the Hellenic arc (Greece) reveal insight into magma generating processes. A compositional gap between 61 and 68 wt.% SiO2 is recognized that coincides with the stratigraphic distinction between pre-caldera and postcaldera volcanic units. Trace element systematics support the subdivision of Nisyros and Yali volcanic units into two distinct suites of rocks. The variation of Nd and Hf present day isotope data and the fact that they are distinct from the isotope compositions of MORB rule out an origin by pure differentiation and require assimilation of a crustal component. Lead isotope ratios of Nisyros and Yali volcanic rocks support mixing of mantle material with a lower crust equivalent. However, Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios of 0.7036-0.7048 are incompatible with a simple binary mixing scenario and give low depleted mantle extraction ages (< 0.1 Ga), in contrast with Pb model ages of 0.3 Ga and Hf and Nd model ages of ca. 0.8 Ga. The budget of fluid-mobile elements Sr and Pb is likely to be dominated by abundant hydrous fluids characterised by mantle-like Sr isotope ratios. Late stage fluids probably were enriched in CO2, needed to explain the high Th concentrations. The occurrence of hydrated minerals (e.g., amphibole) in the first post-caldera unit with the lowermost Sr-87/Sr-86 ratio of 0.7036 +/- 2 can be interpreted as the result of the increased water activity in the source. The presence of two different plagioclase phenocryst generations in the first lava subsequent to the caldera-causing event is indicative for a longer storage time of this magma at a shallower level. A model capable of explaining these observations involves three evolutionary stages. First stage, assimilation of lower crustal material by a primitive magma of mantle origin (as modelled by Nd-Hf isotope systematics). This stage ended by an interruption in replenishment that led to an increase of crystallization and, hence, an increase in viscosity, suppressing eruption. During this time gap, differentiation by fractional crystallization led to enrichment of incompatible species, especially aqueous fluids, to silica depolymerisation and to a decrease in viscosity, finally enabling eruption again in the third stage. The TRANSMED Atlas: geological-geophysical fabric of the Mediterranean region - Final report of the project

Geological research on the Mediterranean region is presently characterized by the transition from disciplinary to multidisciplinary research, as well as from national to international investigations. In order to synthesize and integrate the vast disciplinary and national datasets which are available, it is necessary to implement maximum interaction among geoscientists of different backgrounds. The creation of project-oriented task forces in universities and other research institutions, as well as the development of large international cooperation programs, is instrumental in pursuing such a multidisciplinary and supranational approach. The TRANSMED Atlas, an official publication of the 32nd International Geological Congress (Florence 2004), is the result of an international scientific cooperation program which brought together for over two years sixty-three structural geologists, geophysicists, marine geologists, petrologists, sedimentologists, stratigraphers, paleogeographers, and petroleum geologists coming from eighteen countries, and working for the petroleum industry, academia, and other institutions, both public and private. The TRANSMED Atlas provides an updated, synthetic, and coherent portrayal of the overall geological-geophysical structure of the Mediterranean domain and the surrounding areas. The initial stimulus for the Atlas came from the realization of the extremely heterogeneous nature of the existing geological-geophysical data about such domain. These data have been gathered by universities, oil companies, geological surveys and other institutions in several countries, often using different procedures and standards. In addition, much of these data are written in languages and published in outlets that are not readily accessible to the general international reader. By synthesizing and integrating a wealth of preexisting and new data derived from surficial geology, seismic sections at various scales, and mantle tomographies, the TRANSMED Atlas provides for the first time a coherent geological overview of the Mediterranean region and represents an ideal springboard for future studies.
