The 1:1 mixed-ligand [{Cu(N3)2(diEten)}2] (diEten=N,N-diethylethylenediamine) complex has been synthesized and characterized by i.r. spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The compound crystallizes in the triclinic space group P1. Its structure consists of a centrosymmetric Cu2N2 unit whose N atoms belong to end-on azido bridges. Each copper atom is also surrounded by three nitrogen atoms; two from one N, N-diethylethylenediamine, and one from the remaining azide. The five nitrogen atoms altogether occupy the vertices of a slightly distorted trigonal bipyramid, and the azidobridges produced a rather short Cu...Cu distance of 3.37 Å. © 1989 Chapman and Hall Ltd.

The bis(1,10-phenanthrolinethiocyanatemercury)tetracarbonyliron was prepared from bis(thiocyanatemercury)tetracarbonyliron and 1,10-phenanthroline and crystallized from hot acetone solution as [Fe(CO)4(HgSCN)2(phen)2]·C3H6O, which was subjected to a full IR and X-ray crystallographic characterization. The iron atom is octahedrally coordinated by four carbonyl groups and two mercury atoms in cis positions. The coordination geometry of the mercury atoms is a distorted square-based pyramid since each one is coordinated to one iron, one sulphur, one mercury and two nitrogen atoms. The FeHg distances are 2.549(3) and 2.564(3) Å, and the HgFeHg angle is 78.01(9)°. © 1992.

The compound (3,5-dinitrobenzoate)bis(triphenylphosphine)copper(I) was synthesized and studied by IR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction techniques. It is monomeric with the carboxylato acting as a monodentate ligand. The copper atom shows a trigonal planar coordination geometry. © 1993.

The authors admit that the conjunctive-muscular constitution of the walls of the superior venae cavae throughout the length of the intrapericardium segment and the debouchement in the right atrium, associated with the presence of a myocardium sheath can be made up of a functional device of sphincter form able to act on the control of the blood flow to the interior of the arterial chamber as well as stopping blood flow during the arterial systole. The fixation of the venous wall to the deep chamber of the serous pericardium, contributes to growth in resistance during the elevation of venous pressure, making possible the preservation of integrity of the superior venae cavae. The expansion of fasciculi of nodal fibers in the right wall of the superior venae cavae permits that the unlocked impulse in the S-A node also reaches the vascular wall contributing to the shortening and diminution in caliber of the vein.

The authors studied the histochemical and ultrastructural modifications that occur in the neuromuscular junctions (NMJ) of fibularis longus muscles of mice with an age range of 3 to 21 months. Twenty-four male and female animals were killed at 3, 5, 14 and 21 months of age: 7 of them at 3 months, 4 of them at 5 month, 9 at 14 months and 4 at 21 months. The fibularis longus muscles were processed and their NMJ examined with the transmission electron microscope. The most relevant changes were associated with the degeneration and retraction of terminal axons, i.e., axons poor in synaptic vesicles with degenerated mitochondria, and exhibiting multivesicular bodies and vacuoles; exposed and widened junctional folds and cytoplasmic processes of Schwann cells located in the synaptic gutter. The presence of lysosomes or lipofuchsin in the juxtajunctional sarcoplasm was also noted. These observations suggest that the phenomena of retraction and budding occur in the NMJ with advancing age, with a predominance of events associated with degeneration, leading to profound changes in NMJ shape.

An experimental study of fragmentation of brittle solids under the application of repeated impulsive force is made, emphasizing the behavior of the diversity of fragments. Several scaling relations involving diversity and number of fragments are obtained from experiments and the results are compared with computer simulations. © 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Fusobacterium nucleatum is considered for its role in colonization of initial and late microorganisms in dental plaque and for its coaggregation with other bacterial species. It is known that action of different antimicrobial substances may interfere with either virulence factors or with host-bacteria interaction. The goal of this study was to examine the influence of subinhibitory concentrations of chlorhexidine, triclosan , penicillin G and metronidazole on hemolytic activity and bacteriocin-like substance production of oral F. nucleatum. A high resistance to penicillin G was observed and 63% of the isolates were β-lactamase positive. All the tested isolates were susceptible to metronidazole. F. nucleatum isolates grown with or without antimicrobials were alpha-hemolytics. Bacteriocin-like substance production was increased in isolates grown with penicillin G. Impaired production of hemolytic or antagonic substances can suggest a role in the regulation of oral microbiota.

The antimicrobial activity of four root canal sealers (AH Plus, Sealapex, Ketac Endo, and Fill Canal), two calcium hydroxide pastes (Calen and Calasept), and a zinc oxide paste was evaluated. Seven bacterial strains were used, six of them standard; Micrococcus luteus ATCC 9341, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 10541. There was a wild strain of Streptococcus mutans isolated from saliva obtained in an adult dental clinic. Activity was evaluated using the agar diffusion method with Brain Heart Infusion agar and Müller Hinton medium seeded by pour plate. Calcium hydroxide-based sealers and pastes were either placed directly into 4.0 × 4.0 mm wells or by using absorbent paper points. The plates were kept at room temperature for 2 hr for diffusion. After incubation at 37°C for 24 hr, the medium was optimized with 0.05 g% TTC gel and inhibition haloes were measured. All bacterial strains were inhibited by all materials using the well method. However, when the materials were applied with absorbent paper points, Enterococcus faecalis was not inhibited by zinc oxide, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was not inhibited by AH Plus, Fill Canal, and the zinc oxide-based paste. We conclude that sealers and pastes presented antimicrobial activity in vitro and culture medium optimization with 0.05 g% TTC gel facilitated observation of the inhibition haloes. Antimicrobial activity of 45 extracts of medicinal plants were tested on Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria, Ralstonia solanacearum and Clavibacter michiganense subsp. michiganense. Some assays were done to verify the capability of these plants extrats to show an antibiosis. Five extracts (EAFQ, SM1, SM12, SM16, SA1) shown positive activity. The extract EAFQ expressed bactericide activity on C. michiganense. It suggests the possibility of using these actives substances in natura or as a model to synthesize industrialized products, intendind field utilization.

Anastomosis group 3 (AG-3) of Rhizoctonia solani (teleomorph = Thanatephorus cucumeris) is frequently associated with diseases of potato (AG-3 PT) and tobacco (AG-3 TB). Although isolates of R. solani AG-3 from these two Solanaceous hosts are somatically related based on anastomosis reaction and taxonomically related based on fatty acid, isozyme and DNA characters, considerable differences are evident in their biology, ecology, and epidemiology. However, genetic diversity among field populations of R. solani AG-3 PT and TB has not been documented. In this study, the genetic diversity of field populations of R. solani AG-3 PT and AG-3 TB in North Carolina was examined using somatic compatibility and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) criteria. A sample of 32 isolates from potato and 36 isolates from tobacco were paired in all possible combinations on PDA plus activated charcoal and examined for their resulting somatic interactions. Twenty-eight and eight distinct somatic compatibility groups (SCG) were identified in the AG-3 PT and AG-3 TB samples, respectively. AFLP analyses indicated that each of the 32 AG-3 PT isolates had a distinct AFLP phenotype, whereas 28 AFLP phenotypes were found among the 36 isolates of AG-3 TB. None of the AG-3 PT isolates were somatically compatible or shared a common AFLP phenotype with any AG-3 TB isolate. Clones (i.e., cases where two or more isolates were somatically compatible and shared the same AFLP phenotype) were identified only in the AG-3 TB population. Four clones from tobacco represented 22% of the total population. All eight SCG from tobacco were associated with more than one AFLP phenotype. Compatible somatic interactions between AG-3 PT isolates occurred only between certain isolates from the same field (two isolates in each of four different fields), and when this occurred AFLP phenotypes were similar but not identical.

In anuran amphibian Scinax fuscovarius, the spermatogenesis occurs in structures called seminiferous loculi, in which germ epithelium is organized in spermatocysts. Each cyst contains cells in the same stage of cytodifferentiation. Characteristics of each cellular type and their groups made the identification and differentiation of the germ lineage cells possible. In the basis of the epithelium there are the spermatogonia I, the biggest cells and always associated with the Sertoli cell. After the phase of mitotic proliferation, the cysts containing variable number of spermatogonia II are originated, quite smaller and with cellular boundaries a little distinct. After differentiation and growth in volume, the spermatocytes I appear, the nuclei of which are spherical and with different degrees of compaction of the nuclear material. Starting the meiotic process, the spermatocytes II are originated, which by means of the second meiotic division become haploid cells, the spermatids I. These two last spermatocysts are very similar. In this phase, the cells will go through a prominent process of differentiation until they form the spermatids II, which are elongated and begin to be organized in bundles supported by prominent Sertoli cells. With the process of spermiogenesis, spermatozoa appear, usually observed in compact bundles with tails turned to the lumen and their heads fitted in their support cells. In more advanced stages, the spermatozoa can be observed free in the locular lumen, ready to follow the spermatic path.

The structural characteristics of saturated silica sonogels were studied by means of small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TG), after a long time of aging in saturated conditions. The sonogels were obtained by a sol-gel routine from ultrasound stimulated tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) hydrolysis carried out with the initial water/TMOS molar ratio (r) ranging from 2 to 10. The saturated sonogel structure can be described as composed by mass fractal-like aggregates (clusters) of primary silica particles, all imbibed in a liquid phase. The values of the mass fractal dimension (D) of the clusters was found all around 2.5, while the characteristic size of the clusters (ξ) was found generally increasing with r, going from approximately 2.3 nm (r = 2) to 4.5 nm (r = 10). The volume fraction of the clusters was estimated from the SAXS data. The results were compared to the values of weight loss fraction at the inflection point that has been found in the derivative of the TG curve, which should accounts for the instant in which the meniscus of the liquid phase penetrates into the clusters under a rapid evaporation process as in a TG test.

A quantitative phase analysis was made of LixCoO2 powders obtained by two distinct chemical methodologies at different temperatures (from 400 to 700°C). A phase analysis was made using Rietveld refinements based on X-ray diffraction data, considering the Li xCoO2 powders as a multiphase system that simultaneously contained two main phases with distinct, layered and spinel-type structures. The results showed the coexistence of both structures in LixCoO 2 obtained at low temperature (400 and 500°C), although only the layered structure was detected at higher temperatures (600 and 700°C), regardless of the chemical powder process employed. The electrochemical performance, evaluated mainly by the cycling reversibility of Li xCoO2 in the form of cathode insertion electrodes, revealed that there is a close correlation between structural features and the electrochemical response, with one of the redox processes (3.3 v/3.9 v) associated only with the presence of the spinel-type structure. © 2003 Elsevier B.V. The structural evolution on the drying of wet sonogels of silica with the liquid phase exchanged by acetone, obtained from tetraethoxisilane sonohydrolysis, was studied in situ by small-angle x-ray scattering (SAXS). The periods associated to the structural evolution as determined by SAXS are in agreement with those classical ones established on basis of the features of the evaporation rate of the liquid phase in the obtaining of xerogels. The wet gel can be described as formed by primary particles (microclusters), with characteristic length a ∼ 0.67 nm and surface which is fractal, linking together to form mass fractal structures with mass fractal dimension D=2.24 in a length scale ξ∼6.7 nm. As the network collapses while the liquid/vapor meniscus is kept out of the gel volume, the mass fractal structure becomes more compacted by increasing D and decreasing ξ, with smoothing of the fractal surface of the microclusters. The time evolution of the density of the wet gels was evaluated exclusively from the SAXS parameters ξ, D, and a. The final dried acetone-exchanged gel presents Porod's inhomogeneity length of about 2.8 nm and apparently exhibits an interesting singularity D →3, as determined by the mass fractal modeling used to fit the SAXS intensity data for the obtaining of the parameters ξ and D.
