The effect of salts, detergents and chaotropic agents on mass spectrometric analysis are relatively well understood, mainly due to their actions decreasing the performance of ESI interface in mass spectrometric analysis. However, there are few studies in the literature characterizing the effect of protein stabilization by glycerol, followed in some circumstances by the suppression of protein signal when ESI interface is used. The aim of the present research was to investigate in details the mass spectrometric behavior of some proteins in presence of high levels of glycerol during ESI-MS analysis. Thus, horse heart myoglobin and chicken ovalbumin were used as standard proteins. It was demonstrated that the presence of 1% (v/v) glycerol suppressed the signal of these proteins during the ESI-MS analysis, even when the sample nozzle potential was scanned from 28 to 80 V. However, when the glycerol concentration was decreased to 0.5% (v/v) and the sample cone voltage adjusted to 50 V, a perfect envelope of peaks was observed, allowing the spectrum deconvolution and the molecular mass determination with mass accuracy lower than 0.01% in each situation. A molecular explanation for this suppressive effect and for the analytical overcoming of this difficult is proposed.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate zygomatic bone thickness considering a possible relationship between this parameter and cephalic index (Cl) for better use of Cl in the implant placement technique. Materials and Methods: Cl was calculated for 60 dry Brazilian skulls. The zygo matic bones of the skulls were divided into 13 standardized sections for measurement. Bilateral measurements of zygomatic bone thickness were made on dry skulls. Results: Sections 5, 6, 8, and 9 were appropriate for implant anchorage in terms of location. The mean thicknesses of these sections were 6.05 mm for section 5, 3.15 mm for section 6, 6.13 mm for section 8, and 4.75 mm for section 9. In only 1 section, section 8, did mean thickness on 1 side of of the skull differ significantly from mean thickness on the other side (P <.001). Discussion: For the relationship between quadrant thick ness and Cl, sections 6 and 8 varied independently of Cl. Section 5 associated with brachycephaly, and section 9 associated with subbrachycephaly, presented variations in the corresponding thickness. Conclusion: Based on the results, implants should be placed in sections 5 and 8, since they presented the greatest thickness, except in brachycephalic subjects, where thickness was greatest in section 5, and in subbrachycephalic subjects, where thickness was greatest in section 9. Cl did not prove to be an appropriate parameter for evaluating zygomatic bone thickness for this sampling.

IEEE 1451 Standard is intended to address the smart transducer interfacing problematic in network environments. Usually, proprietary hardware and software is a very efficient solution to in planent the IEEE 1451 normative, although can be expensive and inflexible. In contrast, the use of open and standardized tools for implementing the IEEE 1451 normative is proposed in this paper. Tools such as Java and Phyton programming languages, Linux, programmable logic technology, Personal Computer resources and Ethernet architecture were integrated in order to constructa network node based on the IEEE 1451 standards. The node can be applied in systems based on the client-server communication model The evaluation of the employed tools and expermental results are presented. © 2005 IEEE.

This paper discusses the utilization of Virtual Instrumentation to the implementation and evaluation of different power definitions, so that classical formulations and new definitions can be compared without the necessity of acquiring different power meters or analyzers. Accordingly, the definitions of IEEE Standard 1459-2000 for the measurement of power quantities under distorted and unbalanced situations, have been digitally implemented. Thus, several power and power factor components related to the decomposition of the measured voltage and current signals have been obtained. The proposed PC-based Virtual Instrument uses a high performance acquisition board and isolated sensors and transducers. All digital algorithms and routines have been implemented by means of a graphical development system. Regarding to the implementation of STD 1459, this paper also proposes several different algorithms to the required decompositions of voltage, current and power components. © 2005 IEEE.

The objective of this study was to analyze the electromyographic (EMG) signal behavior of rectus femoris (RF), vastus medialis (VM), vastus lateralis (VL) and biceps femoris (caput longum) (BFCL) from nine women during fatiguing dynamic and isometric knee extensions tests and to determine their EMGFT (Electromyographic Fatigue Threshold). Surface electrodes, biological signal acquisition module, analogical-digital converter board and specific software were used. The RMS (Root Mean Square) values obtained from concentric phase (80 to 30 degrees) of the dynamic knee extension andfrom isometric contraction were correlated with time on each load by linear regression analysis. The respective slopes were correlated with the correspondent load to determine the EMGFT. Force (Kgf) and median frequency - MF (Hz) obtained during MIVC (Maximal Isometric Voluntary Contraction) performed before and after the fatiguing tests were calculated in Matlab environment. The results demonstrated that the endurance time decreases with higher loads the EMG amplitude increase with time and was greater at higher loads, between muscles in dynamic exercise the RF and VL showed higher slopes, and in isometric exercise the VL showed the same behavior The EMGFT values were similar in both exercises; the force values predominantly decreased after fatiguing tests; however the MF only decreased after some loads. The protocols proposed allowed standardizing protocols at least to induce the fatigue process and to determine the EMGFT as an endurance indicative, which may be used to evaluate the effectiveness of rehabilitative or training interventions indicated to reduce muscle weakness and fatigue.

Classification and standardization of the sawn wood is a usual activity, developed by countries that come as great consumers of this material. Brazil does not practice the classification of sawn wood. This work had the main objective of evaluating the sensibility of most common non-destructive tests in the classification of dimension lumber from fast grown Eucalyptus plantation. Wood was obtained from genetic material cultivated at Minas Gerais State, Brazil. 296 beams of structural dimensions (6 cm × 12 cm × 280 cm) from 10 different clones of Eucalyptus were sampled. Beams were non-destructively (stress wave, ultrasound and transverse vibration) and destructively (static bending and compression parallel to grain) tested. Non-destructive results showed sensibility in the classification of structural dimension lumber, being possible to establish wave velocity intervals that attend to the main strength classes reported by Wooden Structures Brazilian Code.

This work presents a case study on technology assessment for power quality devices. A system compatibility test protocol for power quality mitigation devices was developed in order to evaluate the functionality of three-phase voltage restoration devices. In order to case test this test protocol, a development platform with reduced power for DVR (Dynamic Voltage Restorer), the Micro-DVR, was tested, and results were discussed based on voltage disturbances standards. ©2008 IEEE.

The chemical properties of 12 different peats have been analyzed by methods from VDLUFA (German Association of Agricultural Analysis and Research Institutes) and EN (European Committee for Standardization, Technical Committee 223: Soil improvers and growing media). The analyses of pH (CaCl 2), contents of salts (H 2O), nutrients (CAT), and Na and Cl (H 2O) were carried out by VDLUFA methods, while those of pH (H 2O), EC (H 2O), nutrients (CAT), Na (CAT and H 2O) and Cl (H 2O) according to EN. Ten milled or sod white peats and two dredged frozen black peats of different degrees of decomposition were used. All of them contained high amounts of Mg, while black peats were additionally high in N, Fe and Zn. The pH-values were about the same for all peats. N- and Mn-contents depended most on peat origin. Analytical values of both CAT-methods were in the same range. Extraction with H 2O (EN) as compared to CAT (EN) resulted in considerably lower values.

Clinical studies on nasal topical medications require the standardization of nasosinusal normality in order to establish control groups through a specific evaluation of the upper airways. Aim: to standardize the evaluation of candidates for control groups in clinical studies on nasal topical medications. Material and Methods: healthy male volunteers of 18 to 50 years of age, asymptomatic from the nasosinusal standpoint were subjected to a sequential and excluding assessment made up of clinical evaluation, immediate hypersensitivity skin test, saccharin test, flexible nasofibroscopy and nasal cytology. Study design: Crosssectional contemporary cohort. Results: Of the 33 people originally enrolled, 14 (42.4%) were excluded for clinical reasons. Of the 19 remaining, 2 (10.5%) had atopy diagnosed in the skin test and were excluded. 17 were tested with saccharin and presented normal mucociliary clearance. Evaluation by nasal endoscopy showed abnormality in 2 cases (11.8%) and these were excluded. The remaining 15 were submitted to nasal cytology, which proved normal, representing 45.5% of those initially included. Conclusion: The proposed protocol for sequential and excluding evaluation was effective in defining candidates for the establishment of control groups in clinical studies on nasal topical medications. © Revista Brasileira de Otorrinolaringologia. Geological, petrographical, chemicals and technological studies of rocks of the southwest region of Mato Grosso State, Brazil have the purpose of qualification and application of these rocks as dimension stones. The first objective is to enlarge the offering of new esthetic varieties that show a standardization of technologic patterns, adequate characterization and classification assuring the correct specification of the rocks in relation to the use as dimension stones. Ten rock types are recognized for dimension stones, including granites, diabases, gneisses and amphibolites grouped by its colors in red, grey and black types and showing economic potential of plowing. The results obtained in the technological essays show that the rock parameters are sited inside the standard limits established by technical rules and obey satisfactorily the limit values fixed for granites in internal and external covering uses.

Conventional radiography, using industrial radiographic films, has its days numbered. Digital radiography, recently, has taken its place in various segments of products and services, such as medicine, aerospace, security, automotive, etc. As well as the technological trend, the digital technique has brought proven benefits in terms of productivity, sensitivity, the environment, tools for image treatment, cost reductions, etc. If the weld to be inspected is on a serried product, such as, for example, a pipe, the best option for the use of digital radiography is the plane detector, since its use can reduce the length of the inspection cycle due to its high degree of automation. This work tested welded joints produced with the submerged arc process, which were specially prepared in such a way that it shows small artificial cracks, which served as the basis forcomparing the sensitivity levels of the techniques involved. After carrying out the various experiments, the digital meth odshowed the highest sensitivity for the image quality indicator (IQI) of the wire and also in terms of detecting small discontinuities, indicating that the use of digital radiography using the plane detector had advantages over the conventional technique (Moreira et al. IEEE 1451 is Standard to connect transduscers through a communication network. This article describes a supervisory system implementaion according to IEEE 1451 Standard using Java. This software, named NCAP, may be used in several industrial applications, besides making feasible to obtain TEDS as a report or by Internet. NCAP communicates with transduscer module through RS232 Interface and was testes in industrial automation processes. © 2009 IEEE.

The coast environments were the first areas the man occupied in Brazil and they present, nowadays, high urbanization indexes. So, it's very important to analyze the environmental quality of those areas. The geomorphologic aspects are valuable for that analysis because they constitute the physical substrate on which such ant anthropic activities are developed. The cartography of geomorphologic features is essential to supply subsidies for the handling of coastal areas. However, the question about what proceedings are adequate to the geomorphologic cartography of recent sedimentation coastal lands is still in discussion by many authors. This article aims to compare two different technical proposals for mapping São Paulo's south coast, a sector that shows a great depositional complexity. The features related to recent sedimentation sectors were mapped because it's considered that they are necessary to understand the morphodynamic and, at the same time, they demonstrate difficulties in geomorphologic cartography standardization. Through the analysis of the produced maps it's possible to notice that the two proposals have positive aspects, but both need adaptations to cartographically demonstrate the geomorphologic complexity of São Paulo's south coast.
