Concentrations of Cd, Pb, Zn, Cu, Co, Ni, Fe, and Al203, water content, the amounts of organic carbon, the ratio of 13C/12C and the 14C-activity of the organic fraction were determined with sediment depth from a 34 cm long box-core from the Bornholm Basin (Baltic Sea). The average sedimentation rate was 2.4 mm/yr. The upper portion of the core contained increasing amounts of 14C-inactive organic carbon, and above 3 cm depth, man-made 14C from atomic bomb tests. The concentrations of the heavy metals Cd, Pb, Zn, and Cu increase strongly towards the surface, while other metals, as Fe, Ni and Co remain almost unchanged. This phenomenon is attributed to anthropogenic influences. A comparison of the Kieler Bucht, the Bornholm and the Gotland Basins shows that today the anthropogenic addition of Zn is about 100 mg/m**2 yr in all three basins. The beginning of this excess of Zn, however, is delayed by about 20 years in, the Bornholm Basin and by about 40 years in the Gotland Basin. It is suggested that SW-NE transport of these anthropogenically mobilized metals may be related to periodic bottom water renewal in the Baltic Sea sedimentary basins.

Stable carbon isotope ratios in the organic fraction of surface sediments from the Laptev Sea shelf were analyzed in order to study the modern distribution pattern of terrestrial organic matter. The delta13Corg signature of the surface sediments range from -26.6? near the coastal margin to -22.8? in the north towards the outer shelf. Characterizing the possible sources of organic matter by their delta13Corg signature reveals that the terrestrial influence reaches further north in the eastern than in the western Laptev Sea. Downcore records of the delta13Corg, measured on three AMS 14C-dated cores from water depths between 46 and 77 m, specify the spatial and temporal changes in the deposition of terrestrial organic matter on the Laptev Sea shelf during the past 12.7 ka. The major depositional changes of terrestrial organic matter occurred between 11 and 7 ka and comprised the main phase of the southward retreat of the coastline and of the river depocenters due to the postglacial sea level rise.

1. ATP in deep-sea sediments can be determined after it is adsorbed on a mixture of the sediment and calcium carbonate by measuring the luminescence of the reaction of the mixture and luciferin-luciferase. 2. ATP contents of the toplayer of northeastern Atlantic sediments (Josephine Bank and northern Canary Basin) decrease with increasing depths of 252, 408, 1445, 1769, 2149, 4897, 5510m: 0.96, 0.61, 0.13, 0.10, 0.21, 0.05, 0.07 µg ATP/ml wet sediment. The decreasing values are in accordance with the decrease of macrobenthos and meiobenthos biomass in the deep-sea. 3. The ATP content of deep-sea nematodes is about 1 ? of their wet weight. 4. At the two deepest stations, less than 50% of the ATP measured in the sediment is represented by nematodes, copepods, other "hard" meiofauna groups and bacteria.

One hundred surface sediment samples of the Arabian Sea (Indian Ocean) were investigated and relative abundances of coccoliths were compared to mean annual gradients of temperature, salinity, chlorophyll, PO4 and mixed layer depth. Total coccolith concentrations ranged from 42*10**6/g sediment in coastal areas to more than 19000*10**6/g sediment in oceanic regions. The general distribution does not seem to be dependent on coccolithophore productivity in surface waters alone, but also on the diluting input of terrigenous material. A total of 27 taxa were identified. The main species dominating the assemblages were Gephyrocapsa oceanica, Emiliania huxleyi and Florisphaera profunda with a combined average abundance of more than 70%. Several species and species groups reflect with their distribution the environmental parameters of the overlying water masses and may be successfully used to improve palaeoclimatic reconstructions, e.g. (a) F. profunda exhibits a high similarity or even positive correlation to the mean annual mixed layer depth, (b) calciosolenids can be described as coastal or shelf species. While temperature and salinity gradients do not seem to be crucial for coccolithophores in this region, the mean mixed layer depth as well as the PO4 concentration (representative for total nutrient availability) may control in part the coccolithophore assemblages. According to the results of a cluster analysis and the distribution pattern of all species, it was possible to differentiate three main coccolithophore assemblages. A G. oceanica dominated assemblage mainly occurs in the northern part of the study area and can be described as 'high nutrient assemblage'. The second assemblage, dominated by F. profunda, may be typical for oligotrophic and stable conditions in open ocean waters. A third assemblage, with high amounts of 'coastal species', characterises coastal conditions on the shelves.

1. On the cruises 3 and 15 of R.V. "Meteor" 6 grab samples, and 6 hauls with the 6 m Agassiztrawl were taken and at 2 stations the deep sea camera was lowered. This material gave quantitative results on the meiofauna and minimum counts of the macrofauna. 2. The nematodes constitute nearly 95% of the meiofauna, the copepoda only 2%. With increasing sediment depth the density of animals decrease gradually. In the uppermost centimeter of sediment 42.6% of the meiofauna are found while only 3.7% live in layer 6-7 cm. Meiofauna weight ranges from 0.6-5.7 mg/25 m**2 surface i.e. 0.24-2.8 g/m**2. 3. Mean numbers of individuals and weights show standard errors of 20-30 %. As an approximate average values for further considerations the weight of the meiofauna in the area was taken as 1 g/m**2 4. Quantitative information on the macrofauna is derived from the trawls and the photographs for the actinia Chitonanthus abyssorum only, which is found in the rate of 1 individual/36-72 m**2, but seems to be less abundant generally. 5. Animal density does not decrease steadily from nearshore to offshore biocoenoses, i.e. generally with increasing depth. The decrease is more pronounced for macro- than for meiofauna. For the deep sea the weight proportion of macrofauna : meiofauna is of the order of 1 : 1. 6. With the assumption, that adaptation of metabolism to deep sea conditions is similar in macro- and meiofauna total metabolism of invertebrates is ascribed to meiofauna to more than 80%. 7. The structure of the biocoenosis of the deep sea floor is characterized by the meiofauna living on and in the sediment and by the dominance of sediment feeders in the macrofauna. 8. Considering the large numbets and high partition rates of bacteria a comparative large part of the metabolism in the deep sea sediment must be ascribed to bacteria. This favours the hypothesis, that with increasing depth and decreasing addition of organic material to the sediment, the importance of meiofauna and microorganisms for total metabolism increases. 9. Considering the different modes of food transport to the deep sea environment, i.e. sinking of dead particles, transport by vertical migration of organisms, aggregation of organic particles, adsorption of dissoloved organic substance to inorganic particles, and heterotrophy, the sediment may be assumed to contain more food for invertebrates than the water above the bottom. 10. Suspensions feeders of macrofauna are fixed to hard substrates in the sediment surface. Some of them are shown to bend themselves down to the bottom in underwater photographs. This suggests the idea that some deep sea suspension feeders partly depend on food from the sediment surface, on which they feed directly.

During the past six years organic geochemical, micropaleontological, and sedimentological investigations were carried out within the framework of the multidisciplinary bilateral German-Russian research project ''System Laptev Sea'' and detailed biological investigations within the project ''German-Russian Investigations of the Marginal Seas of the Eurasian Arctic'', In order to understand the Laptev Sea ecosystem and to obtain information about sources and fate of organic carbon, the distribution of phyto- and zooplankton, diatoms, chlorophyll a benthic macrofauna, palynomorphs, grain size, total organic carbon, d13Corg and biomarkers (n-alkanes, fatty acids) were determined. In general, the influence of the major rivers draining into the Laptev Sea, is reflected in the water column as well as in the surface sediments. In both habitats three ecological provinces can be distinguished, i.e., the southeastern Laptev Sea, the central Laptev Sea, and the northern Laptev Sea. Additionally, clear differences between the western and the eastern Laptev Sea occur. The comparison of the different data sets of the water column and the surface sediments provide information about organic carbon sources and pathways in the Laptev Sea shelf and continental slope area.

A general study of structure, biomass, and dynamic estimates on meiofauna was carried out during PREFLEX (1975) and FLEX (1976), in 117- 141 m water depth. On the basis of these data an attempt was made to estimate meiofauna production, and this is discussed in relation to the energy input from the spring phytoplankton bloom. Sampling was performed at five stations, but only the stations 1, 4, and 5 were covered by a complete series from August 1975 to July 1976. At each station, from four replicate box core samples, two were withdrawn to study the abundance, distribution, and biomass of meiofauna, the content of chloroplastic pigment equivalents (CPE), and chemical and grain size analyses. At all stations grain size fell in the range of fine sand having median diameters (MD) of < 125 µm. From station 1 to 5 an increase in MD was observed. Highest values of CPE (7.81 µg m l**-1) and organic matter (4.7 %) were obtained in June and July (1976)/ August (1975), respectively. Meiofauna abundance was fairly uniform at all stations examined. Station 1 displayed maximal numbers during the whole investigation period. The abundance per 100 cm**2 varied between 15,550 and 34,900 organisms. All meiofauna studied both in total and as separate taxa showed annual cycles of abundance. Low abundance values were recorded during early summer, and maximum values during winter. High numbers of Foraminifera were obtained for August 1975 (9,460 per 100 cm**2) and July 1976 (9,710 per 100 cm**2). From December to June the values decreased from 3,280 to 1,030 per 100 cm**2. At station 1 maximum values of meiofauna biomass were recorded ranging from 1.5 to 2.7 g DWT m**-2. The mean meiofauna dry weight amounted to 2.1 g DWT m**-2. Based on minimum production, the P/B ratio for the area of station 1 might have a mean of 1.4. Taking into consideration generation times we believe that a turnover ratio of 2 is a conservative value for the Fladen Ground meiofauna. The annual production would amount to 4.2 g DWT m**-2 yr**-1. This is 27.5 % of the energy supply during the spring phytoplankton bloom, which is channelled into the meiofauna. The hypothesis is put forward that the energetic strategy of deep offshore meiofauna differs distinctively from that of shallow inshore meiofauna. While the shallow inshore meiofauna show a relatively fast response to organic matter input, the deep offshore meiofauna reacts much more slowly, the food energy consumption seems to be spread out over a longer period.

Organic matter contained in surface sediments from four regions on the western Portuguese shelf, which are influenced by coastal upwelling and fluvial input, was analysed with respect to elemental organic carbon (Corg) and nitrogen (Ntotal) content and isotopic carbon and nitrogen ratios (d13Corg, d15N). Corg/Ntotal weight ratios and d13Corg values are interpreted in terms of terrigenous or marine organic matter sources, supported by CaCO3 content. Organic matter in the shelf sediments is mainly of marine origin, with increasing terrigenous components only close to rivers and estuaries. In the northern shelf region the data indicates significant terrigenous supply by the Douro River. North of the Nazaré Canyon organic matter composition implies a mainly marine origin, with a higher terrestrial influence close to the canyon head. Organic matter composition in the central shelf region, which is dominated by the Tagus Estuary and the Tagus prodelta, reveals a change from a continental-type signature within the estuary to a more marine-type signature further to the west and south of the estuary mouth. In the southern region near Cape Sines the geochemical properties clearly reflect the marine origin of sedimentary organic matter. Sedimentary d15N values are interpreted to reflect various degrees of assimilation of seasonally upwelled nitrate, in relation to the upwelling centres. In the estuarine environment, inputs of agriculturally influenced dissolved inorganic nitrogen are reflected in the sediments. No evidence for N2-fixation or denitrification is found. On the central shelf north of the Nazaré canyon, sedimentary d15N values are close to marine d15NO3- and thus indicate a complete NO3- assimilation and N-limitation of marine production. Light d15N values in distal sediments off the Douro River mouth and in samples south of C. Sines reflect high NO3- supply and a close proximity to the seasonal upwelling centres. Particularly in sediments form the Sines region, light d15N values in southern samples reflect stronger upwelling further south.
