Ultraviolet signals ultra-aggression in a lizard

Understanding the role of multiple colour signals during sexual signalling is a central theme in animal communication. We quantified the role of multiple colour signals (including ultraviolet, UV), measures of body size and testosterone levels in settling disputes between male rivals in an elaborately ornamented, African lizard, played out in a large 'tournament' in the wild. The hue and brightness (total reflectance) of the UV throat in Augrabies flat lizards, Platysaurus broadleyi, as well as body size, were consistent and strong predictors of 'fighting ability'. Males with high fighting ability were larger and displayed a UV throat with low total reflectance. In contrast, males with low fighting ability were smaller and had violet throats with broader spectral reflectance curves (higher total reflectance). As fighting ability is associated with alternative reproductive tactics in this system (territorial versus floater), we also examined the role of colour signals in predicting male reproductive tactic. Territorial males had UV throats with higher chroma but had poorer body condition than floater males, probably because of the energetic costs of maintaining a territory. Although testosterone was not a significant predictor of fighting ability or reproductive tactic, it was correlated with the hue of the UV throat, suggesting that testosterone may impose some constraint on signal expression. Lastly, we show that within the context of the natural signalling environment, UV-reflective throats constitute a conspicuous, effective signal that male Augrabies flat lizards use to advertise their status honestly to rivals. Correcting the effects of spontaneous emission on cold-trapped ions

We propose two quantum error-correction schemes which increase the maximum storage time for qubits in a system of cold-trapped ions, using a minimal number of ancillary qubits. Both schemes consider only the errors introduced by the decoherence due to spontaneous emission from the upper levels of the ions. Continuous monitoring of the ion fluorescence is used in conjunction with selective coherent feedback to eliminate these errors immediately following spontaneous emission events.

A fuzzy Reed-Frost model for epidemic spreading

In this paper, we present a fuzzy approach to the Reed-Frost model for epidemic spreading taking into account uncertainties in the diagnostic of the infection. The heterogeneities in the infected group is based on the clinical signals of the individuals (symptoms, laboratorial exams, medical findings, etc.), which are incorporated into the dynamic of the epidemic. The infectivity level is time-varying and the classification of the individuals is performed through fuzzy relations. Simulations considering a real problem with data of the viral epidemic in a children daycare are performed and the results are compared with a stochastic Reed-Frost generalization.

Autoimmunity in Hyper-IgM syndrome

Introduction Immunodeficiency with hyper-IgM (HIGM) results from genetic defects in the CD40-CD40 ligand (CD40L) pathway or in the enzymes required for immunoglobulin class switch recombination and somatic hypermutation. HIGM can thus be associated with an impairment of both B-cell and T-cell activation. Results and discussions There are seven main subtypes of HIGM and the most frequent is X-linked HIGM, resulting from CD40L mutations. In addition to the susceptibility to recurrent and opportunistic infections, these patients are prone to autoimmune manifestations, especially hemato-logic abnormalities, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Furthermore, organ-specific autoantibodies are commonly found in HIGM patients. Conclusions The mechanisms by which HIGM associates to autoimmunity are not completely elucidated but a defective development of regulatory T cells, the presence of IgM autoantibodies and an impaired peripheral B-cell tolerance checkpoint have been implicated. This article reviews the main subtypes of HIGM syndrome, the clinical autoinumme manifestations found in these patients, and the possible mechanisms that would explain this association.
