Meglumine is an aminocarbohydrate able to form supramolecular adducts with organic acids. The recognition is based on hydrogen bonds and the structures resulting from the complexation have high solubility in water. This property has been exploited by the pharmaceutical industry in the improvement of existing drugs, and the successful example of this approach involves the poorly soluble non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Investigation of the thermal behavior of adduct obtained from meglumine and the NSAID diclofenac revealed that a polymer-like material is formed from the self-assembly of diclofenac-meglumine adducts in the melt. This polymer showed a high molecular weight around 2.0×105kDa. The kinetic parameters for the thermal decomposition step of the polymer were determined by the Capela-Ribeiro non-linear isoconversional method. From data for the TG curves in nitrogen atmosphere and heating rates of 5, 10, 15 and 20°Cmin-1, the Eα and Bα terms could be determined, and consequently the pre-exponential factor, Aα, as well as the kinetic model, g(α). © 2012 Elsevier B.V.

This investigation has demonstrated the need for thermal treatment of seawater neutralised red mud (SWRM) in order to obtain reasonable adsorption of Reactive Blue dye 19 (RB 19). Thermal treatment results in a greater surface area, which results in an increased adsorption capacity due to more available adsorption sites. Adsorption of RB 19 has been found to be best achieved in acidic conditions using SWNRM400 (heated to 400 °C) with an adsorption capacity of 416.7. mg/g compared to 250.0. mg/g for untreated SWNRM. Kinetic studies indicate a pseudosecond-order reaction mechanism is responsible for the adsorption of RB 19 using SWNRM, which indicates adsorption occurs by electrostatic interactions. © 2013 Elsevier Inc.

Reuse of industrial and agricultural wastes as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) in concrete and mortar productions contribute to sustainable development. In this context, fluid catalytic cracking catalyst residue (spent FCC), a byproduct from the petroleum industry and petrol refineries, have been studied as SCM in blended Portland cement in the last years. Nevertheless, another environmental friendly alternative has been conducted in order to produce alternative binders with low CO2 emissions. The use of aluminosilicate materials in the production of alkali-activated materials (AAMs) is an ongoing research topic which can present low CO2 emissions associated. Hence, this paper studies some variables that can influence the production of AAM based on spent FCC. Specifically, the influence of SiO 2/Na2O molar ratio and the H2O/spent FCC mass ratio on the mechanical strength and microstructure are assessed. Some instrumental techniques, such as SEM, XRD, pH and electrical conductivity measurements, and MIP are performed in order to assess the microstructure of formed alkali-activated binder. Alkali activated mortars with compressive strength up to 80 MPa can be formed after curing for 3 days at 65°C. The research demonstrates the potential of spent FCC to produce alkali-activated cements and the importance of SiO2/Na2O molar ratio and the H2O/spent FCC mass ratio in optimising properties and microstructure. © 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Aiming to evaluate the effect of cover plants over soil chemical attributes in the region of Balsas - Maranhão, samples of Oxisol under plant cover of millet [Pennisetum americanum (L.) Leeke], brachiaria (Brachiaria ruziziensis) and native Cerrado (mid-sized), were collected in three depths (0-0.10; 0.10-0.20 and 0.20-0.40 m). Plant cover of millet and brachiaria promoted an increase in soil pH and reductions in amounts of Al3+ and in saturation by Al3+, in relation to the area with native Cerrado. Major amounts of residue were verified on soil surface under native cerrado, due to greater input of plant residue and lower decomposition rate. Amounts of nutrients and levels of organic matter were higher in areas under millet and brachiaria cover, mainly in 0-0.10 e 0.10-0.20 m. depths. Brachiaria and millet cover plants were similar in relation to alterations promoted in chemical attributes of soil.

Synthesis, characterization and thermal decomposition of bivalent transition metal α-hydroxyisobutyrates, M(C4H7O 3)2·nH2O (M = Mn(II), Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II)), as well as the thermal behaviour of α-hydroxyisobutyric acid and its sodium salt were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), TG-DSC coupled to FTIR, elemental analysis and complexometry. All the compounds were obtained as dihydrated, except the copper one which was obtained in the anhydrous state. The thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occurs in a single or two steps and the final residue up to 235 C (Mn), 300 C (Fe), 305 C (Co), 490 C (Ni), 260 C (Cu) and 430 C (Zn) is Mn2O3, Fe2O3, Co3O 4, NiO, CuO and ZnO, respectively. The results also provided information concerning the ligand's denticity and identification of the gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition of these compounds. The study objective was to evaluate the influence of the addition of soybeans residues on the chemical properties of Eutrudox and Hapludox soils. Soybean leaves and stems were incubated for 0-200 days. The statistical model used was a 5×4 factorial (plantxincubation period) with three replications. Soils without addition of plants were used as controls. Total Organic Carbon (TOC), Soluble Carbon (SC), Total Carbohydrates (TC), Humic Acid (HA), Fulvic Acid (FA) and Humification Rate (HR) were determined. Higher values of chemical attributes (TOC, SC and TC) were found in the Eutrudox soil than in the Hapludox soil and these values increased significantly (p<0.05) after 50 days of incubation in relation to the initial period. The TOC, SC and TC increased in soils amended with soybean plants when compared to controls without plants. HA and FA contents and HR were not affected by the addition of soybean residues. Maximum HA contents were found after 100 days and maximum FA contents and HR were found after 200 days incubation in both soils. It can be concluded that the addition of soybean residues increased the soil chemical properties when compared to the controls. © 2013 Academic Journals Inc.

Thermal and spectroscopic studies on solid trivalent lanthanides and yttrium(III) α-hydroxyisobutyrates, Ln(C4H7O 3)3·nH2O were investigated employing simultaneous thermogravimetry and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), elemental analysis, X-ray diffractometry, complexometry, experimental and theoretical infrared spectroscopy and TG-DSC coupled to FTIR. The dehydration of lanthanum to neodymium and terbium to thulium and yttrium compounds occurs in a single step while for samarium, europium and gadolinium ones it occurs in three consecutives steps. Ytterbium and lutetium compounds were obtained in the anhydrous state. The thermal decomposition of the anhydrous compounds occursin two consecutives steps, except lanthanum (five steps) and cerium (single step), with formation of the respective oxides CeO2, Pr6O 11, Tb4O7 and Ln2O3 (Ln = La, Nd to Lu and Y), as final residue. The resultsalso provided information concerning the composition, thermal behavior, crystallinity and gaseous products evolved during the thermal decomposition. The theoretical and experimental spectroscopic data suggested the possible modes of coordination of the ligand with the lanthanides.© 2013 Elsevier B.V.

The propulsion of most of the operating satellites comprises monopropellant (hydrazine - N2H4) or bipropellant (monometilydrazine - MMH and nitrogen tetroxide) chemical systems. When some sample of the propellant tested fails, the entire sample lot shall be rejected, and this action has turned into a health problem due to the high toxicity of N2H 4. Thus, it is interesting to know hydrazine thermal behavior in several storage conditions. The kinetic parameters for thermal decomposition of hydrazine in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres were determined by Capela-Ribeiro nonlinear isoconversional method. From TG data at heating rates of 5, 10, and 20 C min-1, kinetic parameters could be determined in nitrogen (E = 47.3 ± 3.1 kJ mol-1, lnA = 14.2 ± 0.9 and T b = 69 C) and oxygen (E = 64.9 ± 8.6 kJ mol-1, lnA = 20.7 ± 3.1 and T b = 75 C) atmospheres. It was not possible to identify a specific kinetic model for hydrazine thermal decomposition due to high heterogeneity in reaction; however, experimental f(α)g(α) master-plot curves were closed to F 1/3 model. © 2013 Akadémiai Kiadó, Budapest, Hungary.

ABSTRACT: The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of inclusion of lipid residue of biodiesel originated in the processing of palm oil (Elaeis guineensis) in the diet on the digestibility of feedlot lambs. Twenty-five crossbred male castrated lambs, weighing 20±1.61 kg, were distributed in randomized blocks with five treatments and five replications. The experimental period lasted 22 days; 15 for diet adaptation, 2 for the adaptation to the indicator LIPE (lignin from Eucalyptus grandis isolated, purified and enriched, UFMG, Minas Gerais) and 5 for fecal sampling. Diets were formulated with 64% concentrate based on corn and soybean meal, 31% Massai grass (Panicum maximum cv. Massai) hay and 5% lipid supplementation from increasing levels of substitution of 0, 25, 50, 75 and 100% of palm oil for biodiesel oil from palm residue. The lambs were offered two meals a day, at 7h00 and 16h00. There was linear effect of inclusion of the residue from palm oil biodiesel on dry matter intake. There was no change in digestibility of nutrients except for ether extract. The use of biodiesel from palm oil residue up to 100% replacement for the lipid supplementation of sheep positively influences the consumption without altering the digestibility of nutrients.
