We report an investigation of thermal properties of long-period fiber gratings (LPFGs) of various periods fabricated in the conventional B-Ge codoped fiber. It has been found that the temperature sensitivity of the LPFGs produced in the B-Ge fiber can be significantly enhanced as compared with the standard telecom fiber. A total of 27.5-nm spectral shift was achieved from only 10 °C change in temperature for an LPFG with 240-μm period, demonstrating a first ever reported high sensitivity of 2.75 nm/°C. Such an LPFG may lead to high-efficiency and low-cost thermal/electrical tunable loss filters or sensors with extremely high-temperature resolution. The nonlinear thermal response of the supersensitive LPG was also reported and first explained.

We numerically show the possibility of pulse shaping in a mode-locked fiber laser by inclusion of an amplitude-phase spectral filter into the laser cavity. Various advanced temporal waveforms are generated, including parabolic, flat-top and triangular pulses. © 2014 OSA.

The first resonant-cavity time-division-multiplexed (TDM) fiber Bragg grating sensor interrogation system is reported. This novel design uses a pulsed semiconductor optical amplifier in a cyclic manner to function as the optical source, amplifier, and modulator. Compatible with a range of standard wavelength detection techniques, this optically gated TDM system allows interrogation of low reflectivity "commodity" sensors spaced just 2 m apart, using a single active component. Results demonstrate an exceptional optical signal-to-noise ratio of 36 dB, a peak signal power of over +7 dBm, and no measurable crosstalk between sensors. Temperature tuning shows that the system is fully stable with a highly linear response. © 2004 IEEE.

Combined the large evanescent field of microfiber with the high thermal conductivity of graphene, a sensitive all-fiber temperature sensor based on graphene-assisted micro fiber is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Microfiber can be easily attached with graphene due to the electrostatic 6 force, resulting in an effective interaction between graphene and the evanescent field of microfiber. The change of the ambient temperature has a great influence on the conductivity of graphene, leading to the variation of the effective refractive index of microfiber. Consequently, the optical power transmission will be changed. The temperature sensitivity of 0.1018 dB/°C in the heating process and 0.1052 dB/°C in the cooling process as well as a high resolution of 0.0098 °C is obtained in the experiment. The scheme may have great potential in sensing fields owing to the advantages of high sensitivity, compact size, and low cost.

A transmission performance investigation using ultra-long Raman fibre laser based amplification with different co-pump power is presented. We attribute Q2 factor degradation to RIN of co-pump and induced fibre laser as well as increased SBS.

We report a novel tunable dispersion compensator (TDC) based on all-fiber distributed Gires-Tournois etaIons (DGTE), which is formed by overlapped chirped fiber gratings. Two DGTEs of opposite dispersion slope work together to generate a tunable periodical dispersion profile. The demonstrated TDCs have the advantages of multichannel operation, extremely low group-delay ripple, low loss, and low cost.

Traditional wave kinetics describes the slow evolution of systems with many degrees of freedom to equilibrium via numerous weak non-linear interactions and fails for very important class of dissipative (active) optical systems with cyclic gain and losses, such as lasers with non-linear intracavity dynamics. Here we introduce a conceptually new class of cyclic wave systems, characterized by non-uniform double-scale dynamics with strong periodic changes of the energy spectrum and slow evolution from cycle to cycle to a statistically steady state. Taking a practically important example—random fibre laser—we show that a model describing such a system is close to integrable non-linear Schrödinger equation and needs a new formalism of wave kinetics, developed here. We derive a non-linear kinetic theory of the laser spectrum, generalizing the seminal linear model of Schawlow and Townes. Experimental results agree with our theory. The work has implications for describing kinetics of cyclical systems beyond photonics.

We have demonstrated a switchable dual wavelength fiber ring laser with a high degree of polarization output by using an intracavity 3-stage all fiber Lyot filter. The filter is formed by concatenating four 45° tilted fiber gratings separated by polarization maintaining fibers with a length ratio of 1:2:4 (20, 40, and 80 cm), giving a compact integrated configuration with reduced bandwidth. Switchable dual wavelength or single wavelength output at 1533.5 and 1563.3 nm has been achieved. The output lasing is considerably stable owing to the in-phase mode-selecting function of the multistage Lyot filter, and has a very high degree of polarization higher than 99.9%. © 1989-2012 IEEE.
