Originally, Carolinians grew rice on dry land, but early in the eighteenth century, cultivation spread to swampy fresh water areas. Until the 1850s, rice reigned supreme. But large-scale rice production was limited to the tidal marshes and inland swamp, while cotton became profitable statewide after the invention of the cotton gin. In its heyday, however, rice made a few hundred planters extremely wealthy. It also contributed to cross culturation and the making of Carolina as a rich cultural hybrid. In this essay, it is this aspect of rice cultivation that Professor Littlefield describes.

The present paper discusses the problem of the plurality of the text, as a cultural object, and its implications for the textual criticism activity. Starting from the fact that the nature of the textual object, especially in the case of ancient texts and literary texts, requires the editor to call into play very diverse knowledge – among which stands out the linguistic knowledge, but also the knowledge of the work, its characteristics and context – we advocate that a «philological» approach, multi and interdisciplinary, of the text editing is still needed, desirably carried out by teams of experts in different scientific fields. We exemplify, among others, with the case of the editions of the Sermões, by Vieira.

Abstract: Despite the existence of previous studies, both national and regional, studies that demonstrate a strong presence of slaves in Évora in the 15th and 16th centuries, locating them in documents from the city’s female religious communities and understanding their living conditions in those communities is not an easy task. Many of the references to their existence are indirect and related to a dowry or donation (being mentioned as assets with an assigned value), which could be associated with a will, a partition or a sentence. It is also difficult to ascertain the tasks they performed in the everyday life of cloistered communities, particularly the female ones, subject to the post-Tridentine requirements. Only by presenting a series of cases, other than the ones that are already known, will we be able to suggest considerations on this matter.

ABSTRACT: Data replication is a mechanism to synchronize and integrate data between distributed databases over a computer network. Data replication is an important tool in several situations, such as the creation of backup systems, load balancing between various nodes, distribution of information between various locations, integration of heterogeneous systems. Replication enables a reduction in network traffic, because data remains available locally even in the event of a temporary network failure. This thesis is based on the work carried out to develop an application for database replication to be made accessible as open source software. The application that was built allows for data integration between various systems, with particular focus on, amongst others, the integration of heterogeneous data, the fragmentation of data, replication in cascade, data format changes between replicas, master/slave and multi master synchronization.

AbstractThis article is about the sexual and economic exploitation that female slaves faced in the province of Costa Rica during the eighteenth century. The slave-system, with extant repercussions on contemporary society, is accountable for the globalized exclusion scheme not only in the ex-colonies but even in the former metropolises. Official History is subverted by re-narrating what happened to non-Europeans during the last five hundred years and in Fruit of the Lemon black British author Andrea Levy utilizes orature to trigger the subjectification process in Faith Jackson, a British-born black female whose parents hail from Jamaica. Orature involve the construction of a new subject through revelations on the daily struggle for work, friendship, community-building, racial inclusion and the dire facts of the Caribbean diaspora. Since transindividual social tensions affect the British black subject, native or immigrant, the novel denounces the immigrants’ “amnesia” as a policy and the myth of a British multicultural society accepting peacefully ex-colonial subjects. Results show that remembrance through orature is a powerful means of subjectification and identity, besides being an antidote against a racialized society. In Fruit of the Lemon Levy installs an agonistic stance in which the authority of hegemonic discourse is subverted and a new liberating and hybridized discourse produced.
