Authigenic carbonates, principally calcium-rich dolomites, with extremely variable isotopic compositions were recovered in organic-rich marine sediments during Leg 63 drilling off southern California and Baja California. These carbonates occur as thin layers in fine-grained, diatomaceous sediments and siliceous rocks, mostly deposited during the Neogene. A combination of textural, geochemical, and isotopic evidence indicates these dolomites formed as cements and precipitates in shallow subsurface zones of high alkalinity spawned by abundant CO2 and methane production during progressive microbial decay of organic matter. Depths and approximate temperatures of formation estimated from oxygen isotopes are 87 to 658 meters and 10°C to 50°C, respectively. Within any sedimentary section, dolomites may form simultaneously at several depths or at different times within the same interval. Highly variable carbon isotopes (-30 to +16 per mil) reflect the isotopic reservoir in which the carbonates formed. Oxidation of organic matter through microbial reduction of sulfate at shallow depths favors light-carbon carbonates such as those at Sites 468 and 471; heavy-carbon carbonates at Site 467 most likely formed below this zone where HC**12O3**- is preferentially removed by reduction of CO2 to methane during methanogenesis. An important controlling factor is the sedimentation rate, which dictates both the preservation of organic matter on the sea floor and depth distribution of subsurface zones of organic-matter decay.

Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Leg 164 recovered a number of large solid gas hydrate from Sites 994, 996, and 997 on the Blake Ridge. Sites 994 and 997 samples, either nodular or thick massive pieces, were subjected to laboratory analysis and measurements to determine the structure, molecular and isotopic composition, thermal conductivity, and equilibrium dissociation conditions. X-ray computed tomography (CT) imagery, X-ray diffraction, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and Raman spectroscopy have revealed that the gas hydrates recovered from the Blake Ridge are nearly 100% methane gas hydrate of Structure I, cubic with a lattice constant of a = 11.95 ± 0.05 angström, and a molar ratio of water to gas (hydration number) of 6.2. The d18O of water is 2.67 per mil to 3.51 per mil SMOW, which is 3.5-4.0 heavier than the ambient interstitial waters. The d13C and dD of methane are -66 per mil to -70 per mil and -201 per mil to -206 per mil, respectively, suggesting that the methane was generated through bacterial CO2 reduction. Thermal conductivity values of the Blake Ridge hydrates range from 0.3 to 0.5 W/(m K). Equilibrium dissociation experiments indicate that the three-phase equilibrium for the specimen is 3.27 MPa at 274.7 K. This is almost identical to that of synthetic pure methane hydrate in freshwater.

Diabasic rocks were recovered at Sites 469 and 471 on IPOD/DSDP Leg 63. The diabasic rocks are composed mainly of Plagioclase, clinopyroxene, and low-temperature alteration products. In addition to these phases, a considerable amount of primary biotite and lesser colorless amphibole are observed in some of the Site 471 diabases. Major and trace element data suggest that these rocks are tholeiitic; however, their highly altered nature obscures their petrologic affinity with the DSDP Leg 63 tholeiitic basalts and others from the nearby Pacific ocean floor. It is likely that the Site 469 and 471 diabasic rocks represent products of off-ridge intrusive activity.

The Tara Oceans Expedition (2009-2013) sampled the world oceans on board a 36 m long schooner, collecting environmental data and organisms from viruses to planktonic metazoans for later analyses using modern sequencing and state-of-the-art imaging technologies. Tara Oceans Data are particularly suited to study the genetic, morphological and functional diversity of plankton. The present data set provides continuous measurements of partial pressure of carbon dioxide (pCO2), using a ProOceanus CO2-Pro instrument mounted on the flowthrough system. This automatic sensor is fitted with an equilibrator made of gas permeable silicone membrane and an internal detection loop with a non-dispersive infrared detector of PPSystems SBA-4 CO2 analyzer. A zero-CO2 baseline is provided for the subsequent measurements circulating the internal gas through a CO2 absorption chamber containing soda lime or Ascarite. The frequency of this automatic zero point calibration was set to be 24 hours. All data recorded during zeroing processes were discarded with the 15-minute data after each calibration. The output of CO2-Pro is the mole fraction of CO2 in the measured water and the pCO2 is obtained using the measured total pressure of the internal wet gas. The fugacity of CO2 (fCO2) in the surface seawater, whose difference with the atmospheric CO2 fugacity is proportional to the air-sea CO2 fluxes, is obtained by correcting the pCO2 for non-ideal CO2 gas concentration according to Weiss (1974). The fCO2 computed using CO2-Pro measurements was corrected to the sea surface condition by considering the temperature effect on fCO2 (Takahashi et al., 1993). The surface seawater observations that were initially estimated with a 15 seconds frequency were averaged every 5-min cycle. The performance of CO2-Pro was adjusted by comparing the sensor outputs against the thermodynamic carbonate calculation of pCO2 using the carbonic system constants of Millero et al. (2006) from the determinations of total inorganic carbon (CT ) and total alkalinity (AT ) in discrete samples collected at sea surface. AT was determined using an automated open cell potentiometric titration (Haraldsson et al. 1997). CT was determined with an automated coulometric titration (Johnson et al. 1985; 1987), using the MIDSOMMA system (Mintrop, 2005). fCO2 data are flagged according to the WOCE guidelines following Pierrot et al. (2009) identifying recommended values and questionable measurements giving additional information about the reasons of the questionability.

Low optical degradation in GaInAsN(Sb)/GaAs quantum dots (QDs) p–i–n structures emitting up to 1.55 μm is presented in this paper. We obtain emission at different energies by means of varying N content from 1 to 4%. The samples show a low photoluminescence (PL) intensity degradation of only 1 order of magnitude when they are compared with pure InGaAs QD structures, even for an emission wavelength as large as 1.55 μm. The optimization studies of these structures for emission at 1.55 μm are reported in this work. High surface density and homogeneity in the QD layers are achieved for 50% In content by rapid decrease in the growth temperature after the formation of the nanostructures. Besides, the effect of N and Sb incorporation in the redshift and PL intensity of the samples is studied by post-growth rapid thermal annealing treatments. As a general conclusion, we observe that the addition of Sb to QD with low N mole fraction is more efficient to reach 1.55 μm and high PL intensity than using high N incorporation in the QD. Also, the growth temperature is determined to be an important parameter to obtain good emission characteristics. Finally, we report room temperature PL emission of InGaAsN(Sb)/GaAs at 1.4 μm.

It has been reasoned that the structures of strongly cellular flames in very lean mixtures approach an array of flame balls, each burning as if it were isolated, thereby indicating a connection between the critical conditions required for existence of steady flame balls and those necessary for occurrence of self-sustained premixed combustion. This is the starting assumption of the present study, in which structures of near-limit steady sphericosym-metrical flame balls are investigated with the objective of providing analytic expressions for critical combustion conditions in ultra-lean hydrogen-oxygen mixtures diluted with N2 and water vapor. If attention were restricted to planar premixed flames, then the lean-limit mole fraction of H2 would be found to be roughly ten percent, more than twice the observed flammability limits, thereby emphasizing the relevance of the flame-ball phenomena. Numerical integrations using detailed models for chemistry and radiation show that a onestep chemical-kinetic reduced mechanism based on steady-state assumptions for all chemical intermediates, together with a simple, optically thin approximation for water-vapor radiation, can be used to compute near-limit fuel-lean flame balls with excellent accuracy. The previously developed one-step reaction rate includes a crossover temperature that determines in the first approximation a chemical-kinetic lean limit below which combustión cannot occur, with critical conditions achieved when the diffusion-controlled radiation-free peak temperature, computed with account taken of hydrogen Soret diffusion, is equal to the crossover temperature. First-order corrections are found by activation-energy asymptotics in a solution that involves a near-field radiation-free zone surrounding a spherical flame sheet, together with a far-field radiation-conduction balance for the temperature profile. Different scalings are found depending on whether or not the surrounding atmosphere contains wáter vapor, leading to different analytic expressions for the critical conditions for flame-ball existence, which give results in very good agreement with those obtained by detailed numerical computations.

Houve aumento do ângulo nasolabial.

The mechanoelectrical-transduction channel of the hair cell is permeable to both monovalent and divalent cations. Because Ca2+ entering through the transduction channel serves as a feedback signal in the adaptation process that sets the channel’s open probability, an understanding of adaptation requires estimation of the magnitude of Ca2+ influx. To determine the Ca2+ current through the transduction channel, we measured extracellular receptor currents with transepithelial voltage-clamp recordings while the apical surface of a saccular macula was bathed with solutions containing various concentrations of K+, Na+, or Ca2+. For modest concentrations of a single permeant cation, Ca2+ carried much more receptor current than did either K+ or Na+. For higher cation concentrations, however, the flux of Na+ or K+ through the transduction channel exceeded that of Ca2+. For mixtures of Ca2+ and monovalent cations, the receptor current displayed an anomalous mole-fraction effect, which indicates that ions interact while traversing the channel’s pore. These results demonstrate not only that the hair cell’s transduction channel is selective for Ca2+ over monovalent cations but also that Ca2+ carries substantial current even at low Ca2+ concentrations. At physiological cation concentrations, Ca2+ flux through transduction channels can change the local Ca2+ concentration in stereocilia in a range relevant for the control of adaptation.

Studies on transglutaminases usually focus on the polymerization of protein substrates by intermolecular Nɛ(γ-glutamyl)lysine bridges, without considering the possibility that the monomeric protein units, themselves, could also become crosslinked internally. Both types of crosslinks are produced in the reaction of fibrinogen with red cell transglutaminase. We isolated the transglutaminase-modified, mostly monomeric form (92–96%) of fibrinogen with a Nɛ(γ-glutamyl)lysine content of ≈1.6 moles/mole of fibrinogen. The preparation was fully clottable by thrombin, but the rates of release of fibrinopeptides and clotting times were delayed compared with control. Hybrid Aα⋅γ type of crosslinking, the hallmark of the reaction of the transglutaminase with fibrinogen, occurred by bridging the Aα(408–421) chain segment of the protein to that of γ(392–406). Rotary shadowed electron microscope images showed many monomers to be bent, and the crosslinks seemed to bind the otherwise flexible αC domain closer to the backbone of fibrinogen.

Morphological specialization for a specific role has, until now, been assumed to be restricted to social invertebrates. Herein we show that complete physical dimorphism has evolved between reproductives and helpers in the eusocial naked mole-rat. Dimorphism is a consequence of the lumbar vertebrae lengthening after the onset of reproduction in females. This is the only known example of morphological castes in a vertebrate and is distinct from continuous size variation between breeders and helpers in other species of cooperatively breeding vertebrates. The evolution of castes in a mammal and insects represents a striking example of convergent evolution for enhanced fecundity in societies characterized by high reproductive skew. Similarities in the selective environment between naked mole-rats and eusocial insect species highlight the selective conditions under which queen/worker castes are predicted to evolve in animal societies.

Chemical modification of proteins is a common theme in their regulation. Nitrosylation of protein sulfhydryl groups has been shown to confer nitric oxide (NO)-like biological activities and to regulate protein functions. Several other nucleophilic side chains -- including those with hydroxyls, amines, and aromatic carbons -- are also potentially susceptible to nitrosative attack. Therefore, we examined the reactivity and functional consequences of nitros(yl)ation at a variety of nucleophilic centers in biological molecules. Chemical analysis and spectroscopic studies show that nitrosation reactions are sustained at sulfur, oxygen, nitrogen, and aromatic carbon centers, with thiols being the most reactive functionality. The exemplary protein, BSA, in the presence of a 1-, 20-, 100-, or 200-fold excess of nitrosating equivalents removes 0.6 +/- 0.2, 3.2 +/- 0.4, 18 +/- 4, and 38 +/- 10, respectively, moles of NO equivalents per mole of BSA from the reaction medium; spectroscopic evidence shows the proportionate formation of a polynitrosylated protein. Analogous reaction of tissue-type plasminogen activator yields comparable NO protein stoichiometries. Disruption of protein tertiary structure by reduction results in the preferential nitrosylation of up to 20 thus-exposed thiol groups. The polynitrosylated proteins exhibit antiplatelet and vasodilator activity that increases with the degree of nitrosation, but S-nitroso derivatives show the greatest NO-related bioactivity. Studies on enzymatic activity of tissue-type plasminogen activator show that polynitrosylation may lead to attenuated function. Moreover, the reactivity of tyrosine residues in proteins raises the possibility that NO could disrupt processes regulated by phosphorylation. Polynitrosylated proteins were found in reaction mixtures containing interferon-gamma/lipopolysaccharide-stimulated macrophages and in tracheal secretions of subjects treated with NO gas, thus suggesting their physiological relevance. In conclusion, multiple sites on proteins are susceptible to attack by nitrogen oxides. Thiol groups are preferentially modified, supporting the notion that S-nitrosylation can serve to regulate protein function. Nitrosation reactions sustained at additional nucleophilic centers may have (patho)physiological significance and suggest a facile route by which abundant NO bioactivity can be delivered to a biological system, with specificity dictated by protein substrate.
