The lasing properties of a soluble conjugated polymer, Poly[1,8-octanedioxy-2,6-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-1,2-phenylene-1,2-ethenylene-3,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene] (CNMBC-Ph) in chloroform solution were investigated. The third harmonic radiation of a Nd:YAG laser was used as the pump light. The stimulated emission with a linewidth of 15 nm was observed in the blue wavelength region with the peak at 450 nm. The threshold pulse peak power was about 2.8 MW/cm(2). The energy conversion yield of the laser was estimated to be about 3.4%. The maximum peak power of the laser output pulse reached 40 kW. Both dinuclear [3] ferrocenophane derivatives of the type Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn] [E = S,Se; MLn = Cp* - Cr(NO) (1), Cp* Mo(NO) (2a,2b), CpMo(NO) (3), Cp* W(NO) (4a,4b), Ca2Mo (6b), Cp2W (7a)] and trinuclear 1,1' - ferrocene dichalcogenato complexes Fe(C5H4E)(2)[MLn](2)[MLn = Cp* Cr(NO)(2), E = S(8a), Se(8b)] were synthesized and characterized by their IR, H-1 MMR and EI - MS spectra as well as their elemental analyses.

The heterobimetallic complexes Cp * Rh(CN Bu-t)(EC5H4)(2)Fe [E = S(2),Se(3), Te(4)] have been synthesized by the reaction of halfsandwich rhodium complex Cp * Rh(CNtBu) Cl-2 with Fe(C5H4ELi)(2). 2THF. Oxidation of 2,3 by AgBF4 to give ferrocenium - type salts [Cp * Rh(CNtBu) (EC5H4)(2)Fe] (+) [BF4] (-) [E = S(5),Se(6)] also occurs readily. The new complexes have been characterized by MS IR, H-1 and C-13 NMR spectroscopy and elemental analysis.

We describe here a controlled fabrication of ultrathin monolayer and multilayer films consisting of silicotungstic heteropolyanion SiW12O404- and a cationic polymer of quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) partially complexed with osmium bis(2,2'-bipyridine) on Au electrodes previously self-assembled with cysteamine monolayers based on layer-by-layer electrostatic interaction. The thus-forming monolayer and multilayer chemically modified electrodes are investigated by cyclic voltammetry on their electrochemical behavior and electrocatalytic properties. The composite ultrathin films exhibit remarkable electrocatalytic effects on the reduction of BrO3-, H2O2, and HNO2. The electrocatalytic effects on HNO2 reduction are enhanced with increasing layer number from 1 to 3 but level off with much thicker multilayers. The variations of emission intensities of SrB4O7:Eu2+ and Sr2B5O9Cl:Eu2+ prepared in different atmospheres are discussed in view of the structure of host compounds. A model of substitution defects is proposed to explain the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres of N-2, air and O-2. Experiment results show that SrB4O7:Eu2+ phosphor sample prepared in N-2 atmosphere has an emission intensity of 94% as high as that of the sample prepared in H-2 gas. This implies that the reduction of Eu2+ --> Eu2+ in non-reducing atmospheres could be potentially used in preparing phosphors, such as SrB4O7:Eu2+. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. Two new blue light-emitting PPV-based conjugated copolymers containing both an electron-withdrawing unit (triazole-TAZ) and electron-rich moieties (carbazole-CAR and bicarbazole-BCAR) were prepared by Wittig condensation polymerization between the triazole diphosphonium salt and the corresponding dialdehyde monomers. Their structures and properties were characterized by FT-IR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, PL spectroscopy and electrochemical measurements. The resulting copolymers are soluble in common organic solvents and thermally stable with a T-g of 147degreesC for TAZ-CAR-PPV and of 157degreesC for TAZ-BCAR-PPV. The maximum photoluminescence wavelengths of TAZ-CAR-PPV and TAZ-BCAR-PPV film appear at 460 nm and 480 nm, respectively. Cyclic voltammetry measurement demonstrates that TAZ-BCAR-PPV has good electrochemical reversibility, while TAZ-CAR-PPV exhibits the irreversible redox process. The triazole unit was found to be an effective pi-conjugation interrupter and can play the rigid spacer role in determining the emission colour of the resulting copolymer.

Multilayer films were fabricated by layer-by-layer electrostatic deposition techniques between poly(diallyIdimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) and calf thymus DNA (CT DNA) on glassy carbon and quartz substrates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-vis spectroscopy demonstrated the uniform assembly of PDDA/DNA multilayer films, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed the elemental composition of the films. Moreover, the interaction of DNA in PDDA/DNA films with methyl green was investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy and circular dichroism (CD). (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A simple route to the fabrication of multilayer films containing Pd nanoparticles is described. Following layer-by-layer assembly of PdCl42- and polycation, QPVP-Os (a quaternized poly(4-vinylpyridine) complexed with [Os(bpy)(2)Cl](2+/+)), on 4-aminobenzoic acid-modified glassy carbon electrodes, the three-dimensional Pd nanoparticle multilayer films are directly formed on electrode surfaces via electrochemical reduction of PdCl42- sandwiched between polymers. The growth of PdCl42- is easy on electrode surfaces by electrostatic interaction, and the assembly processes are monitored by cyclic voltammetry and UV-vis spectroscopy. The depth profile analyses by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy verify the constant composition of the Pd nanoparticle multilayer films. Atomic force microscopy proves that the as-prepared Pd nanoparticles are uniformly distributed with an average particle diameter of 3-7 mn. The resulting Pd nanoparticle multilayer-modified electrode possesses high catalytic activity for the reduction of dissolved oxygen and oxidation of hydrazine compounds in aqueous solution.

9,10-Phenanthrenequinone (PQ) supported on graphite powder by adsorption was dispersed in propyltrimethoxysilane-derived gels to yield a conductive composite which was used as electrode material to fabricate a PQ-modified carbon ceramic electrode. In this configuration, PQ acts as a catalyst, graphite powder guarantees conductivity by percolation, the silicate provides a rigid porous backbone, and the propyl groups endow hydrophobicity and thus limit the wetting region of the modified electrode. Square-wave voltammetry was exploited to investigate the pH-dependent electrochemical behavior of the composite electrode and an almost Nernstian response was obtained from pH 0.42 to 6.84. Because the chemically modified electrode can electrocatalyze the reduction of iodate in acidic aqueous solution (pH 2.45), it was used as an amperometric sensor for the determination of iodate in table salt. The advantages of the electrode are that it can be polished in the event of surface fouling, it is simple to prepare, has excellent chemical and mechanical stability, and the reproducibility of surface-renewal is good.

The metallocene complexes ((BuC5H4)-Bu-t)(2)MCl2 (M=Ti (1a), Zr (1b), Hf (1c)) and (tBu2C5H3)(2)MCl2 (M=Ti (2a), Zr (2b), Hf (2c)) were synthesized by the react ions of Li (BuC5H4)-Bu-t and (LiBu2C5H3)-Bu-t with metal tetrachloride in THF solution. The complexes were characterized by their IR, H-1-NMR and EI-MS. The molecular structure of Ic was determined by X-ray single-crystal structure analysis. The complexes (1a similar to 2c) exhibited high activities for ethylene polymerizatin (up to 3.2x10(6) gPE/mol.h) in the presence of methylaluminoxane (MAO) at room temperature.

Novel water insoluble sodium sulfonate-functionalized poly(ether ether ketone)s containing cyclohexylidene in the main chain with degree of sulfonation up to 2.0 were synthesized from nucleophilic polycondensation of 5, 5'-carbonylbis (2-fluorobenzenesulfonate), 4, 4'-difluorobenzophenone and 4, 4'-cyclohexylidenebisphenol. The polymers showed excellent thermal stability and good water resistance as well. The DSC diagrams and WAXD patterns indicated an amorphous morphological structure of these polymers. A comprison of some properties between these copolymers and polymers derived from bisphenol A was given.

A series of light-emitting poly(p-phenylene vinylene)s with triphenylamine units as hole-transporting moieties in the main chain were synthesized via Wittig condensation in good yields. The newly formed vinylene double bonds possessed a trans configuration, which was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared and NMR spectroscopy. The high glass-transition temperature (83-155 degreesC) and high decomposition temperature (> 300 degreesC) suggested that the resulting copolymers possessed high thermal stability. These copolymers, especially TAAPV1, possessed a high weight-average molecular weight (47,144) and a low polydispersity index (1.55). All the copolymers could be dissolved in common organic solvents, such as tetrahydrofuran (THF), CHCl3, CH2Cl2, and toluene, and exhibited intense photoluminesence in THF (the emission maxima were located from 478 to 535 nm) and in film (from 478 to 578 nm). The low onsets of the oxidation potential (0.6-0.75 V) suggested that the alternating copolymers possessed a good hole-transporting property due to the incorporation of triphenylamine moieties. Tridentate ligand[(2,6-ArN=C(Me))(2)C5H3N](Ar=4-allyl-2,6-(i-Pr)(2)C6H3)(4)which contains allyl groups on each aryl ring was ready prepared and reacted with FeCl2. 4H(2)O to give the precatalyst [(2,6-ArN=C(CH3))(2)C5H3N]. FeCl2 (5). Compounds 2-5 were characterized by H-1 NMR, EI-MS,and IR. The complex 5 which was actived by methylaluminoxane(MAO) exhibits high activity for ethylene polymerization [1.9 x 10(6) g pE.(mol Fe . h)(-1) at 0 degreesC]. It was showed that the activity was decreased with increasing temperature and the polymer product was highly linear PE with (M) over bar (eta) varying from 50000 to 260000.

Conversion of thyroxine (T-4) to 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine is an essential first step in controlling thyroid hormone action. Type I deiodinase (DI) can catalyze the conversion to produce the bulk of serum 3,5,3'-triiodothyronine. Acting as a mimic of DI, a selenium-containing catalytic antibody (Se-4C5) prepared by converting the serine residues of monoclonal antibody 4C5 raised against T4 into selenocysteines, can catalyze the deiodination of T4 with dithiothreitol (DTT) as cosubstrate. The mimic enzyme Se-4C5 exhibited a much greater deiodinase activity than model compound ebselen and another selenium-containing antibody Se-Hp4 against GSH. The coupling of selenocysteine with the combining pocket of antibody 4C5 endowed Se-4C5 with enzymatic activity. To probe the catalytic mechanism of the catalytic antibody, detailed kinetic studies were carried out in this paper. Investigations into the deiodinative reaction revealed the relationship between the initial velocity and substrate concentration. The characteristic parallel Dalziel plots demonstrated that Se-4C5-catalyzed reaction mechanism was ping-pong one, involving at least one covalent enzyme intermediate. The kinetic properties of the catalytic antibody were similar to those of DI, with K-m values for T-4 and DTT of approximately 0.8 muM and 1.8 muM, respectively, and a V-m value of 270 pmol per mg of protein per min. The activity could be sensitively inhibited by 6-propyl-2-thiouracil (PTU) with a K-i value of similar to 120 muM at 2.0 muM T-4 concentration. The PTU inhibition was progressively alleviated with the increasing concentration of added DTT, revealing that PTU was a competitive inhibitor for DTT.

The structural and morphological evolution of mono-domains in thin films has been investigated for a series of liquid crystalline (LC) copolyethers. The copolyethers studied were synthesized by the reaction of 1-(4-hydroxy-4 ' -biphenylyl)-2-(4-hydroxyl-phenyl)propane (TPP) with 1,7-dibromoheptane and 1,11-undecane at different compositions (coTPPs-7/11). In contrast to the solution-cast thin films without annealing, which exhibit the isotropic homogeneous molecular orientation, mono-domains with a homeotropic alignment were found in coTPP-7/11(5/5) after the thin films were annealed in the high-temperature columnar phase (Phi '). Similar to the nucleation process in polymer crystallization, transmission electron microscopic observations show that small mono-domains appear in the initial stage of annealing, where molecules form a uniaxial in-plane chain orientation. With increasing annealing time, the molecular orientation gradually became tilted with respect to the substrate surface, and finally, a uniaxial homeotropic molecular orientation was achieved after a prolonged annealing time. The lateral size of mono-domains was found to increase continuously with annealing time and grew into a circular shape, indicating an isotropic lateral growth scheme which implies a hexagonal molecular packing proved by the electron diffraction experiments.
