During the antarctic summer season in 1984 and 1986 field studies and laboratory investigations of the Mesozoic Intrusive Suite of the Palmer Archipel were carried out in cooperation with the Chilean Antarctic Institute and the University of Concepcion, Volcanic formations and intrusive series are the dominant exposed rocks together with very subordinate metasediments. Different petrological and isotopic data allow to divide the Antarctic Intrusive Suite into two intrusive types: a) Palmer Batholith (Lower Cenozoic) b) Costa Danco intrusive rocks (Upper Cretaceous). Both types belong to a calc-alkaline series. The granitoid rocks show an I-type-affinity. Ore minerals (pyrite, chalcopyrite, bornite, covellite, cuprite, pyrrhotite, magnetite and ilmenite) are mainly restricted to the intermediate rock types (e. g. granodiorites}. Propylitisation and kaolinisation are the observed alteration types, which suggest, together with the disseminated and vein-like ore fabrics the comparison with the andean Porphyry-Copper- and vein-type-deposits. The volcanic formations are subdivided into a) the Upper Cretaceous Wiencke Formation, which is composed of andesites and andesitic breccias, and b) into the Jurassic Lautaro Formation with basaltic, andesitic, dacitic and some rhyolitic rocks together with volcanic breccias. These calc-alkaline volcanic rocks apparently are part of an island are. A strong alteration of primary minerals is very common; however, the low ore mineral content does not change significantly within the different alteration types.

Sedimentary cover on the bottom of the Northwest Atlantic Ocean is underlain by Late Jurassic - Cretaceous tholeiite-basalt formation. It consists of come sedimentary formations with different lithologic features and age. Their composition, stratigraphic position and, distribution are described on materials of deep-sea drilling. Mineralogical and geochemical studies of DSDP Leg 43 and Leg 44 holes lead to new ideas about composition and genesis of some sediment types of and their associations. High metal contents in the chalk formation of black clays on the Bermuda Rise probably result from exhalations. Connection of red-colored and speckled deposits with hiatuses in sedimentation is shown. Main stages of geological history of the North American Basin are reflected in accumulation of the followed formations: ancient carbonate formation (Late Jurassic - Early Cretaceous), formation of black clays rich in organic matter (Cretaceous), formation of speckled clays (Late Cretaceous), siliceous-clayey turbidite formation (Eocene), hemipelagic and pelagic clayey formation (Neogene), and terrigenous turbidite formation (Pleistocene).

The Schwalbenberg II loess-paleosol sequence (LPS) denotes a key site for Marine Isotope Stage (MIS 3) in Western Europe owing to eight succeeding cambisols, which primarily constitute the Ahrgau Subformation. Therefore, this LPS qualifies as a test candidate for the potential of temporal high-resolution geochemical data obtained X-ray fluorescence (XRF) scanning of discrete samplesproviding a fast and non-destructive tool for determining the element composition. The geochemical data is first contextualized to existing proxy data such as magnetic susceptibility (MS) and organic carbon (Corg) and then aggregated to element log ratios characteristic for weathering intensity [LOG (Ca/Sr), LOG (Rb/Sr), LOG (Ba/Sr), LOG (Rb/K)] and dust provenance [LOG (Ti/Zr), LOG (Ti/Al), LOG (Si/Al)]. Generally, an interpretation of rock magnetic particles is challenged in western Europe, where not only magnetic enhancement but also depletion plays a role. Our data indicates leaching and top-soil erosion induced MS depletion at the Schwalbenberg II LPS. Besides weathering, LOG (Ca/Sr) is susceptible for secondary calcification. Thus, also LOG (Rb/Sr) and LOG (Ba/Sr) are shown to be influenced by calcification dynamics. Consequently, LOG (Rb/K) seems to be the most suitable weathering index identifying the Sinzig Soils S1 and S2 as the most pronounced paleosols for this site. Sinzig Soil S3 is enclosed by gelic gleysols and in contrast to S1 and S2 only initially weathered pointing to colder climate conditions. Also the Remagen Soils are characterized by subtle to moderate positive excursions in the weathering indices. Comparing the Schwalbenberg II LPS with the nearby Eifel Lake Sediment Archive (ELSA) and other more distant German, Austrian and Czech LPS while discussing time and climate as limiting factors for pedogenesis, we suggest that the lithologically determined paleosols are in-situ soil formations. The provenance indices document a Zr-enrichment at the transition from the Ahrgau to the Hesbaye Subformation. This is explained by a conceptual model incorporating multiple sediment recycling and sorting effects in eolian and fluvial domains.

The Cenozoic Pagodroma Group in the northern Prince Charles Mountains, East Antarctica, is a glaciomarine succession of fjordal character, comprising four uplifted formations of different ages. The composition of the <2 µm fraction of sediments of the Pagodroma Group was analysed in order to help identify source areas, past weathering conditions and glacial regimes. Both clay and non-clay minerals have been quantified. The assemblage of the upper Oligocene to lower Miocene Mount Johnston Formation is characterised by the dominance of illite and intermediate concentrations of chlorite. Similar to that assemblage is the clay mineral suite of the middle Miocene Fisher Bench Formation, where illite and chlorite together account for 95% of the clay minerals. The middle to upper Miocene Battye Glacier Formation is the only formation with significant and persistent smectite concentrations, although illite is still dominant. The kaolinite concentration is also high and is even higher than that of chlorite. The clay fraction of the upper Pliocene to lower Pleistocene Bardin Bluffs Formation is characterised by maximum kaolinite concentrations and relatively low illite and chlorite concentrations. The bulk of the clay fraction in each formation can be explained by the physical weathering and erosion of a nearby source under glacial conditions. In the case of Mount Johnston Formation and Fisher Bench Formation this source may be situated in the metavolcanic and gneissic rocks of Fisher Massif. The sediments of the Bardin Bluffs Formation indicate a local source within the Amery Oasis, where Proterozoic granitoid rocks and gneisses, and Permo-Triassic fluvial rocks of the Amery Group are exposed. These results suggest a strong local imprint on the glacial sediments as northwards flowing ice eroded the bedrock in these areas. The origin of the clay fraction of the Battye Glacier Formation is a matter of debate. The smectite and kaolinite content most easily can be explained by erosion of sources largely hidden beneath the ice upstream. Less likely, these clay minerals reflect climatic conditions that were much warmer and wetter than today, facilitating chemical weathering.

Sedimentation and ore formation were studied in sediments from nine stations located along the 24°W profile in the Brazil Basin of the Atlantic Ocean. Bottom sediments are represented by mio- and hemipelagic muds, which are variably enriched in hydrothermal iron and manganese oxyhydroxides. As compared to bottom sediments from other basins of the Atlantic Ocean, the sediments in study are marked by extremely high manganese contents (up to 1.33%) and maximal enrichment in Ce. It was shown that the positive Ce anomaly is related to REE accumulation on iron oxyhydroxides. Influence of hydrothermal source leads to decrease of Ce anomaly and LREE/HREE ratio. In reduced sediments preservation of positive Ce anomaly and/or its disappearance was observed after iron and manganese reduction. REE contents were determined for the first time in the Ethmodiscus oozes of the Brazil Basin. Ore deposits of the Brazil Basin are represented by ferromanganese crusts and ferromanganese nodules. Judging from contents of iron, manganese, REE, and other trace elements, these formations are ascribed to sedimentation (hydrogenic) deposits. They are characterized by a notable positive Ce anomaly in the REE pattern. Extremely high Ce content (up to 96% of total REE) was discovered for the first time in the buried nodules (Mn/Fe = 0.88).

Results of comprehensive geological, geophysical and geochemical studies carried out in the Cape Verde Fracture Zone (Central Atlantic) during Cruise 9 of R/V ''Antares'' (1990-1991) are published in the book. Detailed characterization of various bedrock complexes (ultrabasites, gabbroids, dolerites, basalts, metamorphic rocks) is given. Geological conditions of newly found hydrothermal mineralization in the area are described. Problems of ore melts are under consideration. New data on hydrochemical anomalies and heat flow are given. The book contains original materials on sedimentary formations of the area.

During Ocean Drilling Program Leg 104 a 900-m-thick sequence of volcanic rocks was drilled at Hole 642E on the Vøring Plateau, Norwegian Sea. This sequence erupted in two series (upper and lower series) upon continental basement. The upper series corresponds to the seaward-dipping seismic reflectors and comprises a succession of about 122 flows of transitional oceanic tholeiite composition. They have been subdivided into several formations consisting of flows related to each other by crystal fractionation processes, magma mixing, or both. Major- and trace-element chemistry indicates affinities to Tertiary plateau lavas of northeast Greenland and to Holocene lavas from shallow transitional segments of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, such as Reykjanes Ridge. The tholeiitic magmas have been derived from a slightly LREE-depleted mantle source. Two tholeiitic dikes that intruded the lower series derive from an extremely depleted mantle source. Interlayered volcaniclastic sediments are dominantly ferrobasaltic and more differentiated. They appear to come from a LREE-enriched mantle source, and may have been erupted in close vicinity of the Vøring Plateau during hydroclastic eruptions. The two tholeiitic dikes that intruded the lower series as well as some flows at the base of the upper series show evidence of assimilation of continental upper crustal material.

Organic matter contents of black shales from the Cretaceous Hatteras and Blake-Bahama formations have been compared to those from surrounding organic-poor strata using C/N ratios, d13C values, and distributions of extractable and nonsolvent-extractable, long-chain hydrocarbons, acids, and alcohols. The proportion of marine and land-derived organic matter varies considerably among all samples, although terrigenous components generally dominate. Most black shales are hydrocarbon-poor relative to their organic-carbon concentrations. Deposition of the black shales in Hole 603B evidently occurred through turbiditic relocation from shallower landward sites and rapid reburial at this outer continental rise location under generally oxygenated bottom-water conditions.

This data report tabulates results of chemical analyses of sediments from four sites (680, 682, 685, and 688) drilled during Leg 112 offshore Peru. These sediments were recovered from the forearc basins underlying the Peru upwelling area. They are equivalent in facies and age to the Pisco and Monterey formations, both of which are of considerable economic and geological interest as hydrocarbon source rocks deposited under conditions of coastal upwelling. Sediments recovered from the shelf (Site 680) and slope (Sites 682, 685, and 688) during Leg 112 are unconsolidated and are thermally immature. A lack of consolidation and thermal catagenesis makes these deposits ideal targets for chemical investigation into effects of early diagenesis in organic-carbon-rich siliceous muds.

The lipids of a Pliocene and a Cretaceous sample from Site 462 were analyzed to assess their source and diagenetic history. Judging from the distributions of the n-alkanes, n-fatty acids, n-alkylcyclohexanes and molecular markers, they are autochthonous, of marine origin, and deposited under oxic paleoenvironmental conditions of sedimentation. The stereochemistry of the various molecular markers (e.g., triterpanes and steranes) of the Pliocene sample indicates that the lipids are geologically mature. This supports the hypothesis of sediment recycling from older formations by turbidite redistribution into the Nauru Basin

The book provides an overview of recent data on processes of dispersion and concentration of phosphorus in marine sedimentation. Distribution, chemical and mineral compositions, structure and age of phosphorites occurring on the floor are described. Phosphorites are one of potential mineral resources of the World Ocean. A scheme of multistage-oceanic phosphorite formation is motivated. Modern and pre-Quaternary phosphorite formations in the ocean are paralleled.

We report iodine and bromine concentrations in a total of 256 pore water samples collected from all nine sites of Ocean Drilling Program Leg 204, Hydrate Ridge. In a subset of these samples, we also determined iodine ages in the fluids using the cosmogenic isotope 129I (T1/2 = 15.7 Ma). The presence of this cosmogenic isotope, combined with the strong association of iodine with methane, allows the identification of the organic source material responsible for iodine and methane in gas hydrates. In all cores, iodine concentrations were found to increase strongly with depth from values close to that of seawater (0.0004 mM) to concentrations >0.5 mM. Several of the cores taken from the northwest flank of the southern summit show a pronounced maximum in iodine concentrations at depths between 100 and 150 meters below seafloor in the layer just above the bottom-simulating reflector. This maximum is especially visible at Site 1245, where concentrations reach values as high as 2.3 mM, but maxima are absent in the cores taken from the slope basin sites (Sites 1251 and 1252). Bromine concentrations follow similar trends, but enrichment factors for Br are only 4-8 times that of seawater (i.e., considerably lower than those for iodine). Iodine concentrations are sufficient to allow isotope determinations by accelerator mass spectrometry in individual pore water samples collected onboard (~5 mL). We report 129I/I ratios in a few samples from each core and a more complete profile for one flank site (Site 1245). All 129I/I ratios are below the marine input ratio (Ri = 1500x10**-15). The lowest values found at most sites are between 150 and 250x10**-15, which correspond to minimum ages between 40 and 55 Ma, respectively. These ages rule out derivation of most of the iodine (and, by association, of methane) from the sediments hosting the gas hydrates or from currently subducting sediments. The iodine maximum at Site 1245 is accompanied by an increase in 129I/I ratios, suggesting the presence of an additional source with an age younger than 10 Ma; there is indication that younger sources also contribute at other sites, but data coverage is not yet sufficient to allow a definitive identification of sources there. Likely sources for the older component are formations of early Eocene age close to the backstop in the overriding wedge, whereas the younger sources might be found in recent sediments underlying the current locations of the gas hydrates.
