We study the distribution of residence time or equivalently that of "mean magnetization" for a family of Gaussian Markov processes indexed by a positive parameter alpha. The persistence exponent for these processes is simply given by theta=alpha but the residence time distribution is nontrivial. The shape of this distribution undergoes a qualitative change as theta increases, indicating a sharp change in the ergodic properties of the process. We develop two alternate methods to calculate exactly but recursively the moments of the distribution for arbitrary alpha. For some special values of alpha, we obtain closed form expressions of the distribution function. [S1063-651X(99)03306-1].

Flows with velocity profiles very different from the parabolic velocity profile can occur in the entrance region of a tube as well as in tubes with converging/diverging cross-sections. In this paper, asymptotic and numerical studies are undertaken to analyse the temporal stability of such 'non-parabolic' flows in a flexible tube in the limit of high Reynolds numbers. Two specific cases are considered: (i) developing flow in a flexible tube; (ii) flow in a slightly converging flexible tube. Though the mean velocity profile contains both axial and radial components, the flow is assumed to be locally parallel in the stability analysis. The fluid is Newtonian and incompressible, while the flexible wall is modelled as a viscoelastic solid. A high Reynolds number asymptotic analysis shows that the non-parabolic velocity profiles can become unstable in the inviscid limit. This inviscid instability is qualitatively different from that observed in previous studies on the stability of parabolic flow in a flexible tube, and from the instability of developing flow in a rigid tube. The results of the asymptotic analysis are extended numerically to the moderate Reynolds number regime. The numerical results reveal that the developing flow could be unstable at much lower Reynolds numbers than the parabolic flow, and hence this instability can be important in destabilizing the fluid flow through flexible tubes at moderate and high Reynolds number. For flow in a slightly converging tube, even small deviations from the parabolic profile are found to be sufficient for the present instability mechanism to be operative. The dominant non-parallel effects are incorporated using an asymptotic analysis, and this indicates that non-parallel effects do not significantly affect the neutral stability curves. The viscosity of the wall medium is found to have a stabilizing effect on this instability.

Vibrational phase relaxation near gas-liquid and liquid-solid phase coexistence has been studied by molecular dynamics simulations of N-N stretch in N-2. Experimentally observed pronounced insensitivity of phase relaxation from the triple point to beyond the boiling point is found to originate from a competition between density relaxation and resonant-energy transfer terms. The sharp rise in relaxation rate near the critical point (CP) can be attributed at least partly to the sharp, rise in vibration-rotation coupling contribution. Substantial subquadratic quantum number dependence of overtone dephasing rate is found near the CP and in supercritical fluids. [S0031-9007 (99)09318-7].

The leading order "temperature" of a dense two-dimensional granular material fluidized by external vibrations is determined. The grain interactions are characterized by inelastic collisions, but the coefficient of restitution is considered to be close to 1, so that the dissipation of energy during a collision is small compared to the average energy of a particle. An asymptotic solution is obtained where the particles are considered to be elastic in the leading approximation. The velocity distribution is a Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution in the leading approximation,. The density profile is determined by solving the momentum balance equation in the vertical direction, where the relation between the pressure and density is provided by the virial equation of state. The temperature is determined by relating the source of energy due to the vibrating surface and the energy dissipation due to inelastic collisions. The predictions of the present analysis show good agreement with simulation results at higher densities where theories for a dilute vibrated granular material, with the pressure-density relation provided by the ideal gas law, sire in error. Two mixed boundary value problems associated with two-dimensional Laplace equation, arising in the study of scattering of surface waves in deep water (or interface waves in two superposed fluids) in the linearised set up, by discontinuities in the surface (or interface) boundary conditions, are handled for solution by the aid of the Weiner-Hopf technique applied to a slightly more general differential equation to be solved under general boundary conditions and passing on to the limit in a manner so as to finally give rise to the solutions of the original problems. The first problem involves one discontinuity while the second problem involves two discontinuities. The reflection coefficient is obtained in closed form for the first problem and approximately for the second. The behaviour of the reflection coefficient for both the problems involving deep water against the incident wave number is depicted in a number of figures. It is observed that while the reflection coefficient for the first problem steadily increases with the wave number, that for the second problem exhibits oscillatory behaviour and vanishes at some discrete values of the wave number. Thus, there exist incident wave numbers for which total transmission takes place for the second problem. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

A neural network has been used to predict the flow intermittency from velocity signals in the transition zone in a boundary layer. Unlike many of the available intermittency detection methods requiring a proper threshold choice in order to distinguish between the turbulent and non-turbulent parts of a signal, a trained neural network does not involve any threshold decision. The intermittency prediction based on the neural network has been found to be very satisfactory.

The velocity distribution for a vibrated granular material is determined in the dilute limit where the frequency of particle collisions with the vibrating surface is large compared to the frequency of binary collisions. The particle motion is driven by the source of energy due to particle collisions with the vibrating surface, and two dissipation mechanisms-inelastic collisions and air drag-are considered. In the latter case, a general form for the drag force is assumed. First, the distribution function for the vertical velocity for a single particle colliding with a vibrating surface is determined in the limit where the dissipation during a collision due to inelasticity or between successive collisions due to drag is small compared to the energy of a particle. In addition, two types of amplitude functions for the velocity of the surface, symmetric and asymmetric about zero velocity, are considered. In all cases, differential equations for the distribution of velocities at the vibrating surface are obtained using a flux balance condition in velocity space, and these are solved to determine the distribution function. It is found that the distribution function is a Gaussian distribution when the dissipation is due to inelastic collisions and the amplitude function is symmetric, and the mean square velocity scales as [[U-2](s)/(1 - e(2))], where [U-2](s) is the mean square velocity of the vibrating surface and e is the coefficient of restitution. The distribution function is very different from a Gaussian when the dissipation is due to air drag and the amplitude function is symmetric, and the mean square velocity scales as ([U-2](s)g/mu(m))(1/(m+2)) when the acceleration due to the fluid drag is -mu(m)u(y)\u(y)\(m-1), where g is the acceleration due to gravity. For an asymmetric amplitude function, the distribution function at the vibrating surface is found to be sharply peaked around [+/-2[U](s)/(1-e)] when the dissipation is due to inelastic collisions, and around +/-[(m +2)[U](s)g/mu(m)](1/(m+1)) when the dissipation is due to fluid drag, where [U](s) is the mean velocity of the surface. The distribution functions are compared with numerical simulations of a particle colliding with a vibrating surface, and excellent agreement is found with no adjustable parameters. The distribution function for a two-dimensional vibrated granular material that includes the first effect of binary collisions is determined for the system with dissipation due to inelastic collisions and the amplitude function for the velocity of the vibrating surface is symmetric in the limit delta(I)=(2nr)/(1 - e)much less than 1. Here, n is the number of particles per unit width and r is the particle radius. In this Limit, an asymptotic analysis is used about the Limit where there are no binary collisions. It is found that the distribution function has a power-law divergence proportional to \u(x)\((c delta l-1)) in the limit u(x)-->0, where u(x) is the horizontal velocity. The constant c and the moments of the distribution function are evaluated from the conservation equation in velocity space. It is found that the mean square velocity in the horizontal direction scales as O(delta(I)T), and the nontrivial third moments of the velocity distribution scale as O(delta(I)epsilon(I)T(3/2)) where epsilon(I) = (1 - e)(1/2). Here, T = [2[U2](s)/(1 - e)] is the mean square velocity of the particles.

Control surface effectiveness is an important parameter for any aeroplane. For a hypersonic aircraft, though the power required to operate the flaps is determined by low speed flying conditions, it is imperative to know the effect of flaps at hypersonic speeds. Hence, studies have been done on this topic by aerodynamicists for over 40 years. In spite of this, only a limited data is available in the literature on this subject. This paper discusses the experimental study of the effect of sweep on the aerodynamic characteristics of thin slab delta wings with flaps at hypersonic speeds. For the purpose of this investigation, a novel special thin six-component balance, which has a thickness of 4mm and can be housed inside wings with 8mm thickness, has been designed. The wings had a sweep of 76degrees, 70degrees and 65degrees, t/c of 0.053 and flaps with 12% of wing area and 12% of wing chord. Testing were done at Mach 8.2, Re number of 2.13 x 10(6) (based on chord), from alpha = -12degrees to 12degrees and flap angle of 20degrees, 30degrees and 40degrees. Separation lengths, measured from Schlieren pictures, clearly show that there is 'no appreciable' effect of sweep on them. Also, using a simple local flow field calculation, the separation has been identified to be transitional in nature. These features of separation reflect in the force data. Because of the small separation length, the flaps (inspite of their small size) were very effective in generating additional C-N, C-M and C-l, which increased with increase in flap angle. In general, the C-N, C-M and X-CP were unaffected by sweep for symmetric flap deflection at positive incidences and asymmetric flap case, For symmetric flap case at negative incidences, only C-N was not influenced by the sweep but C-M decreased and X-CP moved upstream as the sweep is decreased, The wing with lower sweep produces higher CA and lower (L/D)(max) for both symmetric and asymmetric flaps. The rolling moment and adverse yaw increased with decrease in sweep for asymmetric flap deflection. Newtonian theory is shown to be incapable of predicting the effect of sweep on C-l, C-n and on the incremental values of C-N, C-M and C-A. In conclusion, it can be said that a small flap is generally adequate for hypersonic aeroplanes provided they operate at altitudes where transitional and turbulent separation can be expected to occur. This would make the flaps effective and thus enable ample control authority.

Converging swirling liquid jets from pressure swirl atomizers injected into atmospheric air are studied experimentally using still and cine photographic techniques in the context of liquid-liquid coaxial swirl atomizers used in liquid rocket engines. The jet exhibits several interesting flow features in contrast to the nonswirling liquid jets (annular liquid jets) studied in the literature. The swirl motion creates multiple converging sections in the jet, which gradually collapse one after the other due to the liquid sheet breakup with increasing Weber number (We). This is clearly related to the air inside the converging jet which exhibits a peculiar variation of the pressure difference across the liquid sheet, DeltaP, with We. The variation shows a decreasing trend of DeltaP with We in an overall sense, but exhibits local maxima and minima at specific flow conditions. The number of maxima or minima observed in the curve depends on the number of converging sections seen in the jet at the lowest We. An interesting feature of this variation is that it delineates the regions of prominent jet flow features like the oscillating jet region, nonoscillating jet region, number of converging sections, and so on. Numerical predictions of the jet characteristics are obtained by modifying an existing nonswirling liquid jet model by including the swirling motion. The comparison between the experimental and numerical measurements shows that the pressure difference across the liquid sheet is important for the jet behavior and cannot be neglected in any theoretical analysis. A pseudo-spectral method based on Fourier expansions in a Cartesian coordinate system is shown to be an economical method for direct numerical simulation studies of transitional round jets, Several characteristics of the solutions are presented to establish the validity of the solutions in spite of the unnatural choices. We show that neither periodicity, nor the use of a Cartesian system have adversely affected the simulations, Instead, there are benefits in terms of ease of computing and lack of the usual restrictions due to grid structure near the jet axis. By computing the simultaneous evolution of passive scalers, the process of reaction in round jet burners, between a fuel-laden jet and an ambient oxidizer, was also simulated. Some typical solutions are shown and then the results of analysis of these data are summarized. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science Ltd, All rights reserved.

This paper brings out the existence of the maximum in the curvature of the vapour pressure curve. It occurs in the reduced temperature range of 0.6–0.7 for all liquids and has a value of 3.8–4.8. A set of 17 working fluids consisting of several refrigerants, carbon dioxide, cryogenic liquids and water are taken as test fluids. There exists also a minimum close to the critical point which can be observed only when a thermodynamically consistent functional form of the vapour pressure equation is chosen. This feature, in addition to throwing some light on the behaviour of the vapour pressure curve, could provide some useful inputs to the choice of working fluids for vapour pressure thermometers and thermostatic expansion valves.

A group of high-order finite-difference schemes for incompressible flow was implemented to simulate the evolution of turbulent spots in channel flows. The long-time accuracy of these schemes was tested by comparing the evolution of small disturbances to a plane channel flow against the growth rate predicted by linear theory. When the perturbation is the unstable eigenfunction at a Reynolds number of 7500, the solution grows only if there are a comparatively large number of (equispaced) grid points across the channel. Fifth-order upwind biasing of convection terms is found to be worse than second-order central differencing. But, for a decaying mode at a Reynolds number of 1000, about a fourth of the points suffice to obtain the correct decay rate. We show that this is due to the comparatively high gradients in the unstable eigenfunction near the walls. So, high-wave-number dissipation of the high-order upwind biasing degrades the solution especially. But for a well-resolved calculation, the weak dissipation does not degrade solutions even over the very long times (O(100)) computed in these tests. Some new solutions of spot evolution in Couette flows with pressure gradients are presented. The approach to self-similarity at long times can be seen readily in contour plots.
