The catalytic ethanolysis of soybean oil with commercial immobilized lipase type B from Candida antarctica to yield ethyl esters (biodiesel) has been investigated. Transesterification was monitored with respect to the following parameters: quantity of biocatalyst, reaction time, amount of water added and turnover of lipase. The highest yields of biodiesel (87% by (1)H NMR; 82.9% by GC) were obtained after a reaction time of 24 h at 32 degrees C in the presence of lipase equivalent to 5.0% (w/w) of the amount of soybean oil present. The production of ethyl esters by enzymatic ethanolysis was not influenced by the addition of water up to 4.0% (v/v) of the alcohol indicating that it is possible to use hydrated ethanol in the production of biodiesel catalyzed by lipase. The immobilized enzyme showed high stability under moderate reaction conditions and retained its activity after five production cycles. The (1)H NMR methodology elaborated for the quantification of biodiesel in unpurified reaction mixtures showed good correlations between the signal areas of peaks associated with the alpha-methylene groups of the ethyl esters and those of the triacyl-glycerides in residual soybean oil. Monoacylglycerides, diacylglycerides and triglycerides could also be detected and quantified in the crude biodiesel using (1)H NMR spectroscopic and GC-FID chromatographic methods. The biodiesel production by enzymatic catalysis was promising. In this case, was produced a low concentration of glycerol (0.74%) and easily removed by water extraction. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. Julocrotine, N-(2,6-dioxo-l-phenethyl-piperidin-3-yl)-2-methyl-butyramide, is a potent antiproliferative agent against the promastigote and amastigote forms of Leishmania amazonensis (L.). In this work, the crystal structure of Julocrotine was solved by X-ray diffraction, and its geometrical parameters were compared with theoretical calculations at the B3LYP and HF level of theory. IR and NMR spectra also have been obtained and compared with theoretical calculations. IR absorptions calculated with the B3LYP level of theory employed together with the 6-311G+(d,p) basis set, are close to those observed experimentally. Theoretical NMR calculations show little deviation from experimental results. The results show that the theory is in accordance with the experimental data. (C) 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Four new diorganotin(IV) complexes have been prepared from R(2)SnCl(2) (R = Me, Ph) with the ligands 5-hydroxy-3-metyl-5-phenyl-1-(S-benzildithiocarbazate)-pyrazoline (H(2)L(1)) and 5-hydroxy-3-methyl-5-phenyl-1-(2-thiophenecarboxylic)-pyrazoline (H(2)L(2)). The complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, IR. (1)H (13)C, (119)Sn NMR and Mossbauer spectroscopes The complexes [Me(2)SnL(1)], [Ph(2)SnL(1)] and [Me(2)SnL(2)] were also studied by single crystal X-ray diffraction and the results showed that the Sn(IV) central atom of the complexes adopts a distorted trigonal bipyramidal (TBP) geometry with the N atom of the ONX-tridentate (X = O and S) ligand and two organic groups occupying equatorial sites. The C-Sn-C angles for [Me(2)Sn(L(1))] and [Ph(2)Sn(L(1))] were calculated using a correlation between (119)Sn Mossbauer and X-ray crystallographic data based on the point-charge model Theoretical calculations were performed with the B3LYP density functional employing 3-21G(*) and DZVP all electron basis sets showing good agreement with experimental findings General and Sn(IV) specific IR harmonic frequency scale factors for both basis sets were obtained from comparison with selected experimental frequencies (C) 2010 Elsevier B V All rights reserved

In this paper, we show that the steady-state free precession sequence can be used to acquire (13)C high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectra and applied to qualitative analysis. The analysis of brucine sample using this sequence with 60 degrees flip angle and time interval between pulses equal to 300 ms (acquisition time, 299.7 ms; recycle delay, 300 ms) resulted in spectrum with twofold enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio, when compared to standard (13)C sequence. This gain was better when a much shorter time interval between pulses (100 ms) was applied. The result obtained was more than fivefold enhancement in signal-to-noise ratio, equivalent to more than 20-fold reduction in total data recording time. However, this short time interval between pulses produces a spectrum with severe phase and truncation anomalies. We demonstrated that these anomalies can be minimized by applying an appropriate apodization function and plotting the spectrum in the magnitude mode.

We have examined the effect of the uncharged species of lidocaine (LDC) and etidocaine (EDC) on the acyl chain moiety of egg phosphatidylcholine liposomes. Changes in membrane organization caused by both anesthetics were detected through the use of EPR spin labels (5, 7 and 12 doxyl stearic acid methyl ester) or fluorescence probes (4, 6, 10, 16 pyrene-fatty acids). The disturbance caused by the LA was greater when the probes were inserted in more external positions of the acyl chain and decreased towards the hydrophobic core of the membrane. The results indicate a preferential insertion of LDC at the polar interface of the bilayer and in the first half of the acyl chain, for EDC. Additionally, 2 H NMR spectra of multilamellar liposomes composed by acyl chain-perdeutero DMPC and EPC (1:4 mol%) allowed the determination of the segmental order (S-mol) and dynamics (T-1) of the acyl chain region. In accordance to the fluorescence and EPR results, changes in molecular orientation and dynamics are more prominent if the LA preferential location is more superficial, as for LDC while EDC seems to organize the acyl chain region between carbons 2-8, which is indicative of its positioning. We propose that the preferential location of LDC and EDC inside the bilayers creates a "transient site", which is related to the anesthetic potency since it could modulate the access of these molecules to their binding site(s) in the voltage-gated sodium channel. Synthesis, characterization, DFT simulation and biological assays of two new metal complexes of 2-(2-thienyl)benzothiazole - BTT are reported. The complexes [Ag(BTT)(2)NO3] - AgBTT2 and [Au(BTT)Cl]center dot 1/2H(2)O - AuBTT were obtained by mixing the ligand with silver (I) nitrate or gold(I) chloride in methanolic solution. Characterization of the complexes were based on elemental (C, H, N and S), thermal (TG-DTA) analysis, C-13 and H-1 NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopic measurements, as well as the X-ray structure determination for AgBTT2. Spectroscopic data predicted by DFT calculations were in agreement with the experimental data for both complexes. The ligand BTT was synthesized by the condensation of 2-thiophenecarboxaldehyde and 2-aminothiophenol in a microwave furnace. AgBTT2 has a monomeric structure. Both complexes show a good activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Free BIT shows low antitubercular activity. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Quantum mechanics calculations at the ab initio HF/3-21G* level were carried out with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) measurements to characterize citric acid and lithium interactions. The results indicate the formation of a tridentate organometallic compound with one lithium and one citric acid molecule and a tridentate and bidentate compound of two lithium atoms and one citric acid molecule. The results are in agreement with the experimental and theoretical data. (C) 1999 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

The zwitterionic (Z) form, neutral (N) form and transition structure (TS) connecting N to Z, have been studied at the B3LYP/6-31++G** level of calculation by using the SCRF methodology. The intramolecular proton transfer from oxygen to nitrogen atoms of alpha -alanine and vibrational spectrum were analyzed in the different environments employed: acetonitrile, ethanol, carbon tetrachloride and gas phase. The Z species is a stationary point in acetonitrile and ethanol, but not in carbon tetrachloride and gas phase media. The geometry of N, Z and TS was similar in acetonitrile and ethanol. The vibrational spectrum of Z was similar in the two solvents studied. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All lights reserved.

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations point out that the participation of water can effectively lower the barrier height for the isomerization process between hydrated oxide cation, MO(H2O)(+), and dihydroxide cation, M(OH)(2)(+), (M = V, Nb and Ta). The catalytic effect is achieved by a water-assisted mechanism in which water acts as proton donor and acceptor, via a transition structure corresponding to a six-membered ring. In the case of vanadium atom, the presence of two water molecules has been taken into account and the tautomerization becomes nearly barrierless, decreasing both the stability of the transition structures relative to intermediates and the depths of wells associated with the intermediates. This work is a study of coordination compounds by quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), based on the topological analysis of the electron density of molecular systems, both theoretically and experimentally obtained. The coordination chemistry topics which were studied are the chelate effect, bent titanocene and chemical bond in coordination complexes. The chelate effect was investigated according to topological and thermodynamic parameters. The exchange of monodentate ligands on polydentate ligands from same transition metal increases the stability of the complex both from entropy and enthalpy contributions. In some cases, the latter had a higher contribution to the stability of the complex in comparison with entropy. This enthalpic contribution is explained according to topological analysis of the M-ligand bonds where polidentate complex had higher values of electron density of bond critical point, Laplacian of electron density of bond critical point and delocalization index (number of shared electrons between two atoms). In the second chapter, was studied bent titanocenes with bulky cyclopentadienyl derivative π-ligand. The topological study showed the presence of secondary interactions between the atoms of π-ligands or between atoms of π-ligand and -ligand. It was found that, in the case of titanocenes with small difference in point group symmetry and with bulky ligands, there was an nearly linear relationship between stability and delocalization index involving the ring carbon atoms (Cp) and the titanium. However, the titanocene stability is not only related to the interaction between Ti and C atoms of Cp ring, but secondary interactions also play important role on the stability of voluminous titanocenes. The third chapter deals with the chemical bond in coordination compounds by means of QTAIM. The quantum theory of atoms in molecules so far classifies bonds and chemical interactions in two categories: closed shell interaction (ionic bond, hydrogen bond, van der Waals interaction, etc) and shared interaction (covalent bond). Based on topological parameters such as electron density, Laplacian of electron density, delocalization index, among others, was classified the chemical bond in coordination compounds as an intermediate between closed shell and shared interactions
