Ti-6Al-4V is widely used to prepare biomedical implant for orthopaedic and dental applications, but it is an expensive choice relative to other implant materials such as stainless steels and Co-Cr alloys, in large part due to the high manufacturing cost. Adding boron to refine the as cast microstructure of Ti-6Al-4V can eliminate the need for extensive hot working and thereby reduce processing costs. The effect of 0.1 wt-% boron addition and the choice of processing route (forging or extrusion) was studied in the context of potential biomedical applications. Corrosion tests in simulated body fluid indicated that the presence of boron increased the corrosion rate of Ti-6Al-4V and that the increase was higher for forged alloys than for extruded alloys. Boron addition and processing route were found to have a minimal effect on the viability of osteoblasts on the alloy surfaces. It is concluded that the addition of boron could offer advantages during the processing of Ti-6Al-4V for biomedical applications.

In the search for newer distributed phases that can be used in Ni-composite coatings, inexpensive and naturally available pumice has been identified as a potential candidate material. The composition of the pumice mineral as determined by Rietveld analysis shows the presence of corundum, quartz, mulllite, moganite and coesite phases. Pumice stone is crushed, ball-milled, dried and dispersed in a nickel sulfamate bath and Ni-pumice coatings are electrodeposited at different current densities and magnetic agitation speeds. Pumice particles are uniformly incorporated in the nickel matrix and Ni-pumice composite coatings with microhardness as high as 540 HK are obtained at the lowest applied current density. In the electrodeposited Ni-pumice coatings, the grain size of Ni increases with the applied current density. The overall intensity of texture development is slightly stronger for the Ni-pumice composite coating compared to plain Ni coating and the texture evolution is possibly not the strongest deciding factor for the enhanced properties of Ni-pumice coatings. The wear and oxidation resistances of Ni-pumice coating are commensurate with that of Ni-SiC coating electrodeposited under similar conditions. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

This paper highlights the role of globular microstructure on the weldability of semi-solid processed aluminum alloys via high temperature flow behavior. The investigation was carried out on the joining of thixocast A356 aluminum alloy components by friction welding. A thermomechanical model was developed to predict the temperature and stress distributions, as well as to identify the suitable and safe range of parameters. Good comparisons between numerical and experimental results were observed. In addition, metallographic examinations and hardness and tensile tests of the welded samples were carried out. It was found that the tensile strength of the joint is higher than the tensile strength of the parent material for the optimum set of parameters. (C) 2014 Acta Materialia Inc. Present work provides an electrodeposition based methodology for synthesizing Ag-Ni-Fe nanowires. Nanowire morphology was achieved by using an anodic alumina membrane having cylindrical pores of similar to 200 nm diameter. Compositional analysis at a single nanowire level revealed a fairly uniform distribution of component elements in the nanowire volume. Structural characterization strongly indicated toward a presence of randomly oriented, non-equilibrium, nano-crystalline phase volume inside the nanowires. Magnetic characterization revealed a soft magnetic character for the as-synthesized Ag-Ni-Fe nanowires. (C) 2014 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

A combined set of thermo-mechanical steps recommended for high strength beta Ti alloy are homogenization, deformation, recrystallization, annealing and ageing steps in sequence. Recrystallization carried out above or below beta transus temperature generates either beta annealed (lath type morphology of alpha) or bimodal (lath+globular morphology of alpha) microstructure. Through variations in heat treatment parameters at these processing steps, wide ranges of length scales of features have been generated in both types of microstructures in a near beta Ti alloy, Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr (Ti-5553). 0.2% Yield strength (YS) has been correlated to various microstructural features and associated heat treatment parameters. Relative importance of microstructural features in influencing YS has been identified. Process parameters at different steps have been identified and recommended for attaining different levels of YS for this near beta Ti alloy. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Wing morphing is one of the emerging methodology towards improving aerodynamic efficiency of flight vehicle structures. In this paper a morphing structural element is designed and studied which has its origin in the well known chiral structures. The new aspect of design and functionality explored in this paper is that the chiral cell is actuated using thermal Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) actuator wires to provide directional motion. Such structure utilizes the potential of different actuations concepts based on actuator embedded in the chiral structure skin. This paper describes a new class of chiral cell structure with integrated SMA wire for actuation. Chiral topological constructs are obtained by considering passive and active load path decoupling and sub-optimal shape changes. Single cell of chiral honeycomb with actuators are analyzed using finite element simulation results and experiments. To this end, a multi-cell plan-form is characterized showing interesting possibilities in structural morphing applications. The applicability of the developed chiral cell to flexible wing skin, variable stiffness based design and controlling longitudinal-to-transverse stiffness ratio are discussed.

Debonding of Shape Memory Alloy (SMA) wires in SMA reinforced polymer matrix composites is a complex phenomenon compared to other fabric fiber debonding in similar matrix composites. This paper focuses on experimental study and analytical correlation of stress required for debonding of thermal SMA actuator wire reinforced composites. Fiber pull-out tests are carried out on thermal SMA actuator at parent state to understand the effect of stress induced detwinned martensites. An ASTM standard is followed as benchmark method for fiber pull-out test. Debonding stress is derived with the help of non-local shear-lag theory applied to elasto-plastic interface. Furthermore, experimental investigations are carried out to study the effect of Laser shot peening on SMA surface to improve the interfacial strength. Variation in debonding stress due to length of SMA wire reinforced in epoxy are investigated for non-peened and peened SMA wires. Experimental results of interfacial strength variation due to various L/d ratio for non-peened and peened SMA actuator wires in epoxy matrix are discussed.

A phase field modelling approach is implemented in the present study towards simulation of microstructure evolution during cooling slope semi solid slurry generation process of A380 Aluminium alloy. First, experiments are performed to evaluate the number of seeds required within the simulation domain to simulate near spherical microstructure formation, occurs during cooling slope processing of the melt. Subsequently, microstructure evolution is studied employing a phase field method. Simulations are performed to understand the effect of cooling rate on the slurry microstructure. Encouraging results are obtained from the simulation studies which are validated by experimental observations. The results obtained from mesoscopic phase field simulations are grain size, grain density, degree of sphericity of the evolving primary Al phase and the amount of solid fraction present within the slurry at different time frames. Effect of grain refinement also has been studied with an aim of improving the slurry microstructure further. Insight into the process has been obtained from the numerical findings, which are found to be useful for process control.

The present work presents the results of experimental investigation of semi-solid rheocasting of A356 Al alloy using a cooling slope. The experiments have been carried out following Taguchi method of parameter design (orthogonal array of L-9 experiments). Four key process variables (slope angle, pouring temperature, wall temperature, and length of travel of the melt) at three different levels have been considered for the present experimentation. Regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) has also been performed to develop a mathematical model for degree of sphericity evolution of primary alpha-Al phase and to find the significance and percentage contribution of each process variable towards the final outcome of degree of sphericity, respectively. The best processing condition has been identified for optimum degree of sphericity (0.83) as A(3), B-3, C-2, D-1 i.e., slope angle of 60 degrees, pouring temperature of 650 degrees C, wall temperature 60 degrees C, and 500 mm length of travel of the melt, based on mean response and signal to noise ratio (SNR). ANOVA results shows that the length of travel has maximum impact on degree of sphericity evolution. The predicted sphericity obtained from the developed regression model and the values obtained experimentally are found to be in good agreement with each other. The sphericity values obtained from confirmation experiment, performed at 95% confidence level, ensures that the optimum result is correct and also the confirmation experiment values are within permissible limits. This work provides an electrodeposition-based methodology for synthesizing multicomponent nanowires containing Ag, Co and Ni atoms. Nanowire morphology was obtained by using an anodic alumina membrane with cylindrical pores of similar to 200-nm diameter. Structural, compositional and magnetic characterization revealed that the as-synthesized nanowires adopted a core-shell microstructure. The core (axial region) contained pure Ag phase volumes with a plate-like morphology oriented perpendicular to the nanowire axis. The shell (peripheral region) contained pure Ag nanoparticles along with superparamagnetic Co and Ni rich clusters.

This report provides information about an electrodeposition based two-step synthesis methodology for producing core-shell Ag-(Ni-O) nanowires and their detailed structural and compositional characterization using electron microscopy technique. Nanowires were produced by employing anodic alumina templates with a pore diameter of 200 nm. In the first step of the synthesis process, nanocrystalline Ni-O was electrodeposited in a controlled manner such that it heterogeneously nucleated and grew only on the template pore walls without filling the pores from bottom upwards. This alumina template with pore walls coated with Ni-O was then utilized as a template during the electrodeposition of Ag in the second step. Electrodeposited Ag filled the template pores to finally produce Ag-(Ni-O) core-shell nanowires with an overall diameter of 200 nm.

We present comparative analysis of microscopic mechanisms relevant to plastic deformation of the face-centered cubic (FCC) metals Al, Cu, and Ni, through determination of the temperature-dependent free energies of intrinsic and unstable stacking faults along 1 (1) over bar 0] and 1 (2) over bar 1] on the (1 1 1) plane using first-principles density-functional-theory-based calculations. We show that vibrational contribution results in significant decrease in the free energy of barriers and intrinsic stacking faults (ISFs) of Al, Cu, and Ni with temperature, confirming an important role of thermal fluctuations in the stability of stacking faults (SFs) and deformation at elevated temperatures. In contrast to Al and Ni, the vibrational spectrum of the unstable stacking fault (USF1 (2) over bar 1]) in Cu reveals structural instabilities, indicating that the energy barrier (gamma(usf)) along the (1 1 1)1 (2) over bar 1] slip system in Cu, determined by typical first-principles calculations, is an overestimate, and its commonly used interpretation as the energy release rate needed for dislocation nucleation, as proposed by Rice (1992 J. Mech. Phys. Solids 40 239), should be taken with caution.

Niobium-based alloys are well-established refractory materials; as a result of their high melting temperature and good creep properties, these alloys find their applications in nuclear reactors. The present study deals with a microstructural response of these materials during hot working. The evolution of microstructure and texture during high-temperature deformation has been investigated in the temperature range 1500-1700A degrees C and strain rate range of 0.001-0.1 s(-1). For each deformed sample, the microstructure has been examined in detail. The microstructural features clearly revealed the formation of a substructure and the occurrence of dynamic recrystallization in a proper temperature-strain rate window. At low strain rates, the necklace structure formation was more prominent.

The end of the Palaeozoic is marked by two mass-extinction events during the Middle Permian (Capitanian) and the Late Permian (Changhsingian). Given similarities between the two events in geochemical signatures, such as large magnitude negative C-13 anomalies, sedimentological signatures such as claystone breccias, and the approximate contemporaneous emplacement of large igneous provinces, many authors have sought a common causal mechanism. Here, a new high-resolution continental record of the Capitanian event from Portal Mountain, Antarctica, is compared with previously published Changhsingian records of geochemical signatures of weathering intensity and palaeoclimatic change. Geochemical means of discriminating sedimentary provenance (Ti/Al, U/Th and La/Ce ratios) all indicate a common provenance for the Portal Mountain sediments and associated palaeosols, so changes spanning the Capitanian extinction represent changes in weathering intensity rather than sediment source. Proxies for weathering intensity chemical index of alteration, W and rare earth element accumulation all decline across the Capitanian extinction event at Portal Mountain, which is in contrast to the increased weathering recorded globally at the Late Permian extinction. Furthermore, palaeoclimatic proxies are consistent with unchanging or cooler climatic conditions throughout the Capitanian event, which contrasts with Changhsingian records that all indicate a significant syn-extinction and post-extinction series of greenhouse warming events. Although both the Capitanian and Changhsingian event records indicate significant redox shifts, palaeosol geochemistry of the Changhsingian event indicates more reducing conditions, whereas the new Capitanian record of reduced trace metal abundances (Cr, Cu, Ni and Ce) indicates more oxidizing conditions. Taken together, the differences in weathering intensity, redox and the lack of evidence for significant climatic change in the new record suggest that the Capitanian mass extinction was not triggered by dyke injection of coal-beds, as in the Changhsingian extinction, and may instead have been triggered directly by the Emeishan large igneous province or by the interaction of Emeishan basalts with platform carbonates.

An AlCrCuNiFeCo high entropy alloy (HEA), which has simple face centered cubic (FCC) and body centered cubic (BCC) solid solution phases as the microstructural constituents, was processed and its high temperature deformation behaviour was examined as a function of temperature (700-1030 degrees C) and strain rate (10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1)), so as to identify the optimum thermo-mechanical processing (TMP) conditions for hot working of this alloy. For this purpose, power dissipation efficiency and deformation instability maps utilizing that the dynamic materials model pioneered by Prasad and co-workers have been generated and examined. Various deformation mechanisms, which operate in different temperature-strain rate regimes, were identified with the aid of the maps and complementary microstructural analysis of the deformed specimens. Results indicate two distinct deformation domains within the range of experimental conditions examined, with the combination of 1000 degrees C/10(-3) s(-1) and 1030 degrees C/10(-2) s(-1) being the optimum for hot working. Flow instabilities associated with adiabatic shear banding, or localized plastic flow, and or cracking were found for 700-730 degrees C/10(-3)-10(-1) s(-1) and 750-860 degrees C/10(-1.4)-10(-1) s(-1) combinations. A constitutive equation that describes the flow stress of AlCrCuNiFeCo alloy as a function of strain rate and deformation temperature was also determined. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
