Birth centers are maternal care models that use appropriate technology when providing care to birthing women. This descriptive study aimed to characterize intrapartum care in a freestanding birth center, in light of the practices recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO), with 1,079 assisted births from 2006 to 2009 in the Sapopemba Birth Center, São Paulo, Brazil. Results included the use of intermittent auscultation (mean=7 controls); maternal positions during delivery: semi-sitting (82.3%), side-lying (16.0%), other positions (1.7%), oral intake (95.6%); companionship (93.3%); exposure to up to three vaginal examinations (85.4%), shower bathing (84.0%), walking (68.0%), massage (60.1%), exercising with a Swiss ball (51.7%); amniotomy (53.4%), oxytocin use during the first (31.0%) and second stages of labor (25.8%), bath immersion (29.3%) and episiotomy (14.1%). In this birth center, care providers used practices recommended by the WHO, although some practices might have been applied less frequently.

How did Europe overtake China? We construct a simple Malthusian model with two sectors, and use it to explain how European per capita incomes and urbanization rates could surge ahead of Chinese ones. That living standards could exceed subsistence levels at all in a Malthusian setting should be surprising. Rising fertility and falling mortality ought to have reversed any gains. We show that productivity growth in Europe can only explain a small fraction of rising living standards. Population dynamics - changes of the birth and death schedules - were far more important drivers of the longrun Malthusian equilibrium. The Black Death raised wages substantially, creating important knock-on effects. Because of Engel's Law, demand for urban products increased, raising urban wages and attracting migrants from rural areas. European cities were unhealthy, especially compared to Far Eastern ones. Urbanization pushed up aggregate death rates. This effect was reinforced by more frequent wars (fed by city wealth) and disease spread by trade. Thus, higher wages themselves reduced population pressure. Without technological change, our model can account for the sharp rise in European urbanization as well as permanently higher per capita incomes. We complement our calibration exercise with a detailed analysis of intra-European growth in the early modern period. Using a panel of European states in the period 1300-1700, we show that war frequency can explain a good share of the divergent fortunes within Europe.

Testimonies disclosed that a 44-year-old pedestrian was struck head-on by a truck while she was roaming on the motorway; at the time of collision, the truck was travelling at a speed of about 90 km/h. In the second phase of the collision, the pedestrian was projected about 100 m before her body was run over by the truck and then by a car. The autopsy revealed extensive mutilations, making it impossible to verify the testimonies of witnesses to the collision as regards the pedestrian's position at the moment of the first impact. However, the reports produced by the technical expert and the forensic pathologist were able to confirm the testimonies, based on an impact zone on the front panel of the cab of the truck, where part of the pedestrian's face was reproduced like a "modern holy shroud".

Summary [résumé français voir ci-dessous] From the beginning of the 20th century the world population has been confronted with the human immune deficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). This virus has the particularity to mutate fast, and could thus evade and adapt to the human host. Our closest evolutionary related organisms, the non-human primates, are less susceptible to HIV-1. In a broader sense, primates are differentially susceptible to various retrovirus. Species specificity may be due to genetic differences among primates. In the present study we applied evolutionary and comparative genetic techniques to characterize the evolutionary pattern of host cellular determinants of HIV-1 pathogenesis. The study of the evolution of genes coding for proteins participating to the restriction or pathogenesis of HIV-1 may help understanding the genetic basis of modern human susceptibility to infection. To perform comparative genetics analysis, we constituted a collection of primate DNA and RNA to allow generation of de novo sequence of gene orthologs. More recently, release to the public domain of two new primate complete genomes (bornean orang-utan and common marmoset) in addition of the three previously available genomes (human, chimpanzee and Rhesus monkey) help scaling up the evolutionary and comparative genome analysis. Sequence analysis used phylogenetic and statistical methods for detecting molecular adaptation. We identified different selective pressures acting on host proteins involved in HIV-1 pathogenesis. Proteins with HIV-1 restriction properties in non-human primates were under strong positive selection, in particular in regions of interaction with viral proteins. These regions carried key residues for the antiviral activity. Proteins of the innate immunity presented an evolutionary pattern of conservation (purifying selection) but with signals of relaxed constrain if we compared them to the average profile of purifying selection of the primate genomes. Large scale analysis resulted in patterns of evolutionary pressures according to molecular function, biological process and cellular distribution. The data generated by various analyses served to guide the ancestral reconstruction of TRIM5a a potent antiviral host factor. The resurrected TRIM5a from the common ancestor of Old world monkeys was effective against HIV-1 and the recent resurrected hominoid variants were more effective against other retrovirus. Thus, as the result of trade-offs in the ability to restrict different retrovirus, human might have been exposed to HIV-1 at a time when TRIM5a lacked the appropriate specific restriction activity. The application of evolutionary and comparative genetic tools should be considered for the systematical assessment of host proteins relevant in viral pathogenesis, and to guide biological and functional studies.

Cape Verde is a country that has undergone changes in several areas including the intensification of economic and trade relations with the rest of the world and the capital market. All this means that the country is looking for foreign companies in order to invest in the country due to its political stability. But this development is needed in all areas and in this sense he feels the need of having modern accounting documents and credible as our PNC had not been subject to such change its implementation in 1984. It is this sense that emerges as the SNCRF order to serve as an instrument for the national and international companies based in the country to make the presentation of their accounts with a high quality and low cost. The paper demonstrates the implications and benefits arising from the implementation constraints.

Mineral dust aerosols recently collected at the high-altitude Jungfraujoch research station (46 degrees 33'51 `' N, 7 degrees 59'06 `' E; 3580 m a.s.l.) were compared to mineral dust deposited at the Colle Gnifetti glacier (45 degrees 52'50 `' N, 7 degrees 52'33 `' E; 4455 m a.s.l.) over the last millennium. Radiogenic isotope signatures and backward trajectories analyses indicate that major dust sources are situated in the north-central to north-western part of the Saharan desert. Less radiogenic Sr isotopic compositions of PM10 aerosols and of mineral particles deposited during periods of low dust transfer likely result from the enhancement of the background chemically-weathered Saharan source. Saharan dust mobilization and transport were relatively reduced during the second part of the Little Ice Age (ca. 1690-1870) except within the greatest Saharan dust event deposited around 1770. After ca. 1870, sustained dust deposition suggests that increased mineral dust transport over the Alps during the last century could be due to stronger spring/summer North Atlantic southwesterlies and drier winters in North Africa. On the other hand, increasing carbonaceous particle emissions from fossil fuel combustion combined to a higher lead enrichment factor point to concomitant anthropogenic sources of particulate pollutants reaching high-altitude European glaciers during the last century.

We estimate the world distribution of income by integrating individualincome distributions for 125 countries between 1970 and 1998. Weestimate poverty rates and headcounts by integrating the density functionbelow the $1/day and $2/day poverty lines. We find that poverty ratesdecline substantially over the last twenty years. We compute povertyheadcounts and find that the number of one-dollar poor declined by 235million between 1976 and 1998. The number of $2/day poor declined by 450million over the same period. We analyze poverty across different regionsand countries. Asia is a great success, especially after 1980. LatinAmerica reduced poverty substantially in the 1970s but progress stoppedin the 1980s and 1990s. The worst performer was Africa, where povertyrates increased substantially over the last thirty years: the number of$1/day poor in Africa increased by 175 million between 1970 and 1998,and the number of $2/day poor increased by 227. Africa hosted 11% ofthe world s poor in 1960. It hosted 66% of them in 1998. We estimatenine indexes of income inequality implied by our world distribution ofincome. All of them show substantial reductions in global incomeinequality during the 1980s and 1990s.

Under plausible assumptions about preferences and technology, the model in this papersuggests that the entire volume of world trade matters for wage inequality. Therefore, trade integration, even among identical countries, is likely to increase the skill premium.Further, we argue that empirical evidence of a falling relative price of skill-intensive goods can be reconciled with the fast growth of world trade and that the intersectoral mobility of capital exacerbates the effect of trade on inequality. We provide new empirical evidence in support of our results and a quantitative assessment of the skill bias of world trade.
