The use of modular or ‘micro’ maximum power point tracking (MPPT) converters at module level in series association, commercially known as “power optimizers”, allows the individual adaptation of each panel to the load, solving part of the problems related to partial shadows and different tilt and/or orientation angles of the photovoltaic (PV) modules. This is particularly relevant in building integrated PV systems. This paper presents useful behavioural analytical studies of cascade MPPT converters and evaluation test results of a prototype developed under a Spanish national research project. On the one hand, this work focuses on the development of new useful expressions which can be used to identify the behaviour of individual MPPT converters applied to each module and connected in series, in a typical grid-connected PV system. On the other hand, a novel characterization method of MPPT converters is developed, and experimental results of the prototype are obtained: when individual partial shading is applied, and they are connected in a typical grid connected PV array

Experimental research has been performed to relate specific cement characteristics to deterioration due to sulfate and sea water attack after five year exposure, and to study different test method suitability for sulfate and marine resistance. Sulfate resistance testing have been performed on mortar specimens made with fifteen cement types of statistically diverse chemical composition according to European standard EN 197-1, most of them with sulfate resistant properties according to Spanish regulations. Chemical and mechanical characteristics were studied to determine the variation in properties of selected cements. SO3 content, type and amount of additions, C3A, and C4AF content were used to examine relationships between these characteristics and the results of sulfate resistance. Mortar specimens testing using Na2SO4 as the aggressive medium according to ASTM 1012 (with w/c ratio adapted to prENV 196-X:1995) was performed using each type of cement; identical specimens were also stored in sea water, and in lime saturated water (blank condition), up to five year age. Additionally these cements were tested conforming ASTM 452 and Koch and Steinegger test. Recommended acceptance limits for sulfate resistance of cements concerning to each used test method were evaluated in order to explore their suitability. Relationships between cement characteristics, degradation, expansive products obtained by X-ray diffraction techniques and maximum expansion after applied storage treatments, were correlated at final age, to redefine cement characteristics for sulfate resistant and marine resistant Portland cement

The evolution of water content on a sandy soil during the sprinkler irrigation campaign, in the summer of 2010, of a field of sugar beet crop located at Valladolid (Spain) is assessed by a capacitive FDR (Frequency Domain Reflectometry) EnviroScan. This field is one of the experimental sites of the Spanish research center for the sugar beet development (AIMCRA). The objective of the work focus on monitoring the soil water content evolution of consecutive irrigations during the second two weeks of July (from the 12th to the 28th). These measurements will be used to simulate water movement by means of Hydrus-2D. The water probe logged water content readings (m3/m3) at 10, 20, 40 and 60 cm depth every 30 minutes. The probe was placed between two rows in one of the typical 12 x 15 m sprinkler irrigation framework. Furthermore, a texture analysis at the soil profile was also conducted. The irrigation frequency in this farm was set by the own personal farmer 0 s criteria that aiming to minimizing electricity pumping costs, used to irrigate at night and during the weekend i.e. longer irrigation frequency than expected. However, the high evapotranspiration rates and the weekly sugar beet water consumption—up to 50mm/week—clearly determined the need for lower this frequency. Moreover, farmer used to irrigate for six or five hours whilst results from the EnviroScan probe showed the soil profile reaching saturation point after the first three hours. It must be noted that AIMCRA provides to his members with a SMS service regarding weekly sugar beet water requirement; from the use of different meteorological stations and evapotranspiration pans, farmers have an idea of the weekly irrigation needs. Nevertheless, it is the farmer 0 s decision to decide how to irrigate. Thus, in order to minimize water stress and pumping costs, a suitable irrigation time and irrigation frequency was modeled with Hydrus-2D. Results for the period above mentioned showed values of water content ranging from 35 and 30 (m3/m3) for the first 10 and 20cm profile depth (two hours after irrigation) to the minimum 14 and 13 (m3/m3) ( two hours before irrigation). For the 40 and 60 cm profile depth, water content moves steadily across the dates: The greater the root activity the greater the water content variation. According to the results in the EnviroScan probe and the modeling in Hydrus-2D, shorter frequencies and irrigation times are suggested.

The art of construction is a risky activity that directly affects the life and physical integrity of persons. Since the approval of Law 31/1995, of November 8, Prevention of Occupational Risks was the first legislation that established the current basis in all sectors and then transposed into Spanish law Directive 92/57/CEE called Royal Decree 1627/1997 of October 24, on minimum safety and health dispositions in construction works, measures have been proposed to develop a mixed body of scientific literature composed of researchers and professionals in the field of occupational safety and health, but even today there is still no clear and firm proposal, showing a lack of awareness in the occupational risk prevention and, therefore, a consolidation of the culture of prevention in society. Therefore, the technicians, who make up the building process, can incur in very high responsibilities, such as: Author of the project, Coordinator of Safety and Health during the preparation of the project and during the execution of works, Site Management: Site Manager. This involves the immediate creation of a general training in prevention for all architects starting when still studying, as well as specific training, appropriate and complementary to all the architects that will be devoted to the specialty of occupational safety and health in construction works. That is, first, we must make the responsible bodies aware of the urgent need to integrate risk prevention in the curricula of architecture and later in the continuing education of the profession. It is necessary that our teaching must conform to the laws on safety and health, due to the fact that the law recognizes our academic degrees and professional qualifications to perform functions in that area

The figure of the coordinator in health and safety issues in the construction sector first appeared in our legislation through the incorporation of the European Directives (in our case Royal Decree 1627/97 on the minimum health and safety regulations in construction works), and is viewed differently in different countries of the European Union regarding the way they are hired and their role in the construction industry. Coordinating health and safety issues is also a management process that requires certain competencies that are not only based on technical or professional training, but which, taking account of the work environment, require the use of strategies and tools that are related to experience and personal skills. Through a piece of research that took account of expert opinions in the matter, we have found which competencies need to be possessed by the health and safety coordinator in order to improve the safety in the works they are coordinating. The conclusions of the analyses performed using the appropriate statistical methods (comparing means and multivariate analysis techniques), will enable training programmes to be designed and ensure that the health and safety coordinators selected have the competencies required to carry out their duties.

Changes in the aromatic composition as well as sensory characteristics in Verdejo white wines were analysed based on two factors: the winemaking methodology and the storing time of wine in bottles. The volatile components were determined by GLC-MS, and the sensory profile was designed and assessed according to the ISO 11035 standard. The results showed that when wines were made in oak barrels, either completely or partially, which means the wines were in contact with the lees, the levels of 1-octanol, ethyl heptanoate and ethyl decanoate were significantly affected (P menor que 0.05); the softness sensation was also influenced (P menor que 0.05). However, the amount of time the wines were stored in bottles significantly affected (P menor que 0.05) the levels of 1-hexanol, ethyl heptanoate, ethyl octanoate, ethyl decanoate, hexyl acetate, isoamyl acetate and isoamyl lactate and also an odour note (tropical fruit). The compounds with higher OAV values belong to the groups of esters and fatty acids. For these reasons, the composition and the quality of the aroma of Verdejo white wines appear to be significantly affected both by use of oak barrels in winemaking and the time the wines are stored in bottles.

The study of pointer years of numerous tree-ring chronologies of the central Iberian Peninsula (Sierra de Guadarrama) could provide complementary information about climate variability over the last 405 yr. In total, 64 pointer years have been identified: 30 negative (representing minimum growths) and 34 positive (representing maximum growths), the most significant of these being 1601, 1963 and 1996 for the negative ones, and 1734 and 1737 for the positive ones. Given that summer precipitation was found to be the most limiting factor for the growth of Pinus in the Sierra de Guadarrama in the second half of the 20th century, it is also an explanatory factor in almost 50% of the extreme growths. Furthermore, these pointer years and intervals are not evenly distributed throughout time. Both in the first half of the 17th and in the second half of 20th, they were more frequent and more extreme and these periods are the most notable for the frequency of negative pointer years in Central Spain. The interval 1600–1602 is of special significance, being one of the most unfavourable for tree growth in the centre of Spain, with 1601 representing the minimum index in the regional chronology. We infer that this special minimum annual increase was the effect of the eruption of Huaynaputina, which occurred in Peru at the beginning of 1600 AD. This is the first time that the effects of this eruption in the tree-ring records of Southern Europe have been demonstrated.

No tillage, minimum tillage and conventional tillage practices are commonly used in maize crops in Alentejo, affecting soil physic conditions and determining seeders performance. Seeders distribution can be evaluated in the longitudinal and vertical planes. Vertical plane is specified by seeding depth (Karayel et al., 2008). If, in one hand seeding depth uniformity is a goal for all crop establishment , in the other hand, seeders furrow openers depth control is never constant depending on soil conditions. Seed depth uniformity affects crop emergence, Liu et al. (2004) showed an higher correlation between crop productivity and emergence uniformity than with longitudinal plants distribution. Neto et al. (2007) evaluating seed depth placement by measuring maize mesocotyl length under no tillage conditions in 38 farms concluded that 20% of coefficient of variation suggests the need of improvement seeders depth control mechanisms. The objective of this study was to evaluate casual relationships and create spatial variability maps between soil mechanic resistance and vertical distribution under three different soil practices to improve seed depth uniformity.

Over the last few years, the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) under the sponsorship of the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has prepared, organized, conducted, and summarized two international benchmarks based on the NUPEC data—the OECD/NRC Full-Size Fine-Mesh Bundle Test (BFBT) Benchmark and the OECD/NRC PWR Sub-Channel and Bundle Test (PSBT) Benchmark. The benchmarks’ activities have been conducted in cooperation with the Nuclear Energy Agency/Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (NEA/OECD) and the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety (JNES) Organization. This paper presents an application of the joint Penn State University/Technical University of Madrid (UPM) version of the well-known sub-channel code COBRA-TF (Coolant Boiling in Rod Array-Two Fluid), namely, CTF, to the steady state critical power and departure from nucleate boiling (DNB) exercises of the OECD/NRC BFBT and PSBT benchmarks. The goal is two-fold: firstly, to assess these models and to examine their strengths and weaknesses; and secondly, to identify the areas for improvement.

This paper includes the experimental study, analysis, redesign and subsequent test of the parts of a closed circuit, low speed wind tunnel which are relevant in terms of total pressure loss. The objective is to lower the energy consumption of this system for given conditions in test chamber, so as to reduce the operational costs. In order to achieve this objective, several tasks were performed as the text shows in its different parts. For these tasks, the ETSIAE wind tunnel was used, although the results of this work can be extrapolated to any wind tunnel with the same characteristics. Part II presents a theoretical previous study of the general running of a closed circuit, low speed wind tunnel, as well as the followed procedure to conduct experimental tests for obtaining the total pressure loss in its parts. Results from these tests and their analysis are included in this part. In part III, the analysis of the influence of corner 1 on the pressure loss takes place. As it is said in this part, corner 1 has great importance in the total pressure loss of the wind tunnel. Therefore, it is the first part that should be modified in order to improve the performances of the wind tunnel. During part IV, an optimised guide vane is designed in order to reduce the pressure loss in corner 1 of the wind tunnel. Software MISES is used to achieve this goal by means of selecting the optimum guide vane. In order to introduce the new guide vane in wind tunnels with affordable costs, the easily constructable criterion is kept during design. For this reason, the guide vane will consist of simple aerodynamic contours. Part V includes some possible improvements for the proposed guide vane, in order to evaluate if there is room for improvement in its design. Finally, part VI includes the tests that were conducted in the wind tunnel with the new guide vane cascade and the analysis of their results, in order to asses whether the proposed design fulfills the requirement of lowering the total pressure loss in the wind tunnel. Part VII gathers the main ideas resulting from the whole work.

This Thesis presents a methodology for the statistical analysis of pipe breaks in water distribution networks. The methodology studies the relationship between pipe breaks and water pressure, and proposes a pressure management procedure to reduce the number of breaks that occur in such networks. One of the manifestations of the deterioration of water supply systems is frequent pipe breaks. System failures are one of the major challenges faced by water utilities, due to their associated social, economic and environmental costs. For all these reasons, water utilities aim at reducing the problem of break occurrence to as great an extent as possible. Water distribution networks can be divided into areas or sectors, which facilitates the control of the network. These areas may be independent or isolated by valves, as it usually happens in developing countries. Alternatively, they can be hydraulically interconnected. The implementation of pressure management strategies is usually carried out through pressure-reducing valves (PRV). These valves are installed at the head of the sectors and, although the inflow may vary significantly, they control the downstream pressure. The most popular methods of pressure management consist of pressure reduction, which is the common form of control, pressure sustaining, prevention and/or alleviation of pressure surges or large variations in pressure, and level/altitude control. From 2005 onwards, the effects of pressure management on burst frequencies have become more widely recognized in the technical literature. This thesis suggests a pressure management that controls the pressure indicator ranges most influential on the probability of pipe breaks. Operating pressure in a sector is characterized by means of a pressure indicator at the head of the DMA, as head losses are relatively small and topographical differences were accounted for at the design stage. The pressure indicator, which may be defined as the calculated statistic from the time series of pressure head over a specific time window, may provide necessary information to help water utilities to make decisions to reduce pipe breaks in water distribution networks. The first part of the methodology presented in this Thesis provides the pressure indicators which have the greatest impact on the probability of pipe breaks to be determined. In order to know whether a pressure indicator influences the probability of pipe breaks, the proposed methodology compares estimates of cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) of a pressure indicator through consideration of two situations: when they are conditioned to the occurrence of a pipe break (a rare event), and when they are not (a normal operation). Water utilities usually have a history of failures limited to recent periods of time, and it is difficult to have access to precise information in an underground network. Therefore, the use of distribution functions to address such imprecision of recorded data is proposed. Cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) derived from the time series of pressure indicators (normal operation) and CDFs of indicator values at times coincident with a reported pipe break (conditioned to breaks) are compared. If all estimated CDFs are drawn from the same population, there is no reason to infer that the studied indicator clearly influences the probability of the rare event. However, when it is statistically proven that the estimated CDFs do not come from the same population, the analysed indicator may have an influence on the occurrence of pipe breaks. Due to the fact that the number of indicator values used to estimate the CDF conditioned to breaks is much lower in comparison with the number of indicator values to estimate the CDF of the unconditional pressure series, and that the obtained results depend on the size of the compared samples, CDFs from random sets of the same size sampled from the unconditional indicator values are estimated. Therefore, the comparison between the estimated CDFs of random sets of the indicator and the estimated CDF conditioned to breaks allows knowledge of if the indicator is influential on the probability of pipe breaks. Pressure indicators depend on various parameters. Sensitivity analysis and a robust statistical test allow determining the indicator for which these parameters result most influential on the probability of pipe breaks. At the same time, indicators can be calculated according to two model parameters, named as the anticipation time and the window width. The anticipation time refers to the time (hours) between the end of the period for the computation of the pressure indicator and the break. The window width is the number of instantaneous pressure values required to calculate the pressure indicator and is multiple of 24 hours, as water pressure has a cyclical behaviour which lasts one day. A sensitivity analysis of the model parameters explains when the pressure indicator is more influential on the probability of pipe breaks. The second part of the methodology presents a Bayesian diagnostic model. This kind of model belongs to the class of statistical predictive models, which are based on historical data, represent break behavior and patterns in water mains, and use the Bayes’ theorem to condition the probability of failure to specific system characteristics. The Bayes’ theorem allows comparing the break-conditioned FDA and the unconditional FDA of the indicators and determining when the probability of pipe breaks increases for certain pressure indicator ranges. A defined probability ratio provides a measure to establish whether the probability of breaks increases for certain ranges of the pressure indicator. The first part of the methodology is applied to the water distribution network of Madrid (Spain) and to the water distribution network of Panama City (Panama). The data filtering method suggests that the methodology can be applied to 15 sectors in Madrid and to two areas in Panama City. The results show that, in both systems, the most influential indicators on the probability of pipe breaks are the pressure range, which is the difference between the maximum pressure and the minimum pressure, and pressure variability, referred to the statistical property of the standard deviation. Therefore, they represent the dispersion of the data, the persistence of the variation in pressure and may be related to the fatigue in material resistance. The second part of the methodology has been applied to the influential indicators on the probability of pipe breaks in the water distribution network of Madrid. The main conclusion is that the probability of pipe breaks increases for the extreme values of the pressure range indicator and of the pressure variability indicator. Finally, a pressure management which limits the ranges of the pressure indicators influential on the probability of pipe breaks that increase such probability is recommended. The methodology presented here is general, may be applied to other water distribution networks, and could help water utilities reduce the number of system failures through pressure management.

In this study two YBa2Cu3O7−δ bulk superconductors were evaluated, with the aim of analyzing the influence of the processing method (TSMG and Bridgman) and the test temperature on their mechanical behavior. The relationship between their mechanical properties and fracture micromechanisms has also been studied. Both materials were tested at room and at service temperature. TPB tests were carried out to determine their mechanical behavior, strength and toughness. Moreover, one of the two materials, characterized by transversal microstructural anisotropy, was tested in two directions. Hardness of both materials at nano and micro scale was studied. The results show that the mechanical behavior of the materials is controlled by the defects and cracks that have been introduced during the processing of the materials. A good degree of agreement was found between the experimental crack defects detected by means of SEM and those gathered from the fracture mechanical analysis of the experimental data

ABSTRACT This study consisted in a long-term nutritional intervention carried out with professional basketball players according to nutritional recommendations, with the following two main objectives: 1) to evaluate the changes produced by the intervention on daily nutritional practices of these athletes and 2) to determine the influence of long term nutritional intake modifications on the rate of perceived exertion per session (Session-RPE) and fatigue, throughout a competitive season for training as well as competition games. These objectives are based on: 1) much scientific evidence that shows an inadequacy of the nutritional habits of basketball players and other athletes regarding nutritional recommendations; 2) the fact widely recognized in the scientific literature that an optimal nutrition allows to achieve the maximum performance of an athlete (both physically and cognitively), promoting fast recovery and decreasing risks of sports injuries and illnesses. However, only few studies carried out a long term nutritional intervention to improve nutritional practices of athletes and it could not be found any research with basketball players; 3) the high correlation between the rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and physiological variables related to the performance of physical exercise (e.g.: heart rate, maximum consumption of oxygen or blood lactate) and multiple studies showing the attenuation of RPE during exercise due to the intake of certain nutrients (especially carbohydrates), while none of them was developed in basketball; 4) correlation between nutritional intake and Session-RPE has been recently studied for the first time. Session-RPE method has been validated in basketball players and other team sports as an indicator of internal workload, sports performance and exercise intensity; 5) fatigue is considered one of the main influential factor on RPE and sport performance. It has also been observed that carbohydrates intake may delay or mitigate the onset of fatigue and, thus, decrease the perceived exertion and the internal training load, which could improve sports performance and training-induced adaptations; 6) there are few studies evaluating the influence of nutrient intake on Session-RPE and only one of them has been carried out with basketball players. Moreover, it has not been analyzed the possible effects of the adequacy of players’ nutritional habits through a nutritional intervention on Session-RPE and fatigue, variables that could be decreased for all training session and competition games because of an improvement of daily nutritional intake. Therefore, this work begins with an introduction that provides the conceptual framework of this research focused on the key role of nutrition in sport, as well as on the current nutritional recommendations for athletes and specifically for basketball players. In addition, previous nutritional interventions carried out with other athletes are described, as well as consequential modifications on their food pattern, coinciding with the first objective of the present study. Subsequently, RPE, Session-RPE and fatigue are analyzed, with focus on their correlation with physical workload, training intensity, sports performance and recovery. Finally, all the aforementioned aspects (nutritional intake, RPE and fatigue) were combined in order to know the current status of the relation between each other, this being the base for the second objective of this study. Subsequently, the objectives mentioned above are explained, continuing with the explanation of the methodology used in the study. The methodology consisted of a case-study design, carrying out a long term nutritional intervention with three professional basketball players (each player = one case study; n = 1), in order to adapt their nutritional intake to nutritional recommendations. At the same time, the individual response of each player to the intervention was analyzed for the two main objectives of the study. Each player completed a food diary (7 days; weighing food) in three moments: before, during and at the end of the intervention. In addition, the Session-RPE and fatigue were daily recorded throughout the study for all trainings (training with ball and resistance training) and competition games. At the same time, other potentially influential variables such as mood state and sleeping were daily controlled throughout the study. Data analysis consisted in descriptive statistics calculation for all the variables of the study, the comparison between nutritional intake (evaluated at different times) and nutritional recommendations and a non-parametric mean comparison between pre intervention and during intervention periods was made by Wilcoxon test (repeated measurements) for all variables too. Finally, the changes in nutritional intake, mood state and sleeping were correlated with the perceived exertion and fatigue through correctional study (Tau_b de Kendall). After the methodology, the study results and the associated discussion are presented. The discussion is based on the current scientific evidence that contributes to understand the relation between Session-RPE, fatigue and nutrition throughout the competitive season. The main findings and results analysis can be summarized as follows: 1) the three professional basketball players initially had inadequate nutritional habits and this clearly shows the need of a sports nutritionist in the coaching staff of professional teams; (2) the major deficiencies of the three players’ diet corresponded to a pronounced deficit of energy intake and carbohydrates consumption which were reduced with nutritional intervention; (3) the excessive intake of total fat, saturated fatty acids, ethanol and protein found in some cases were also adapted to the recommendations after the intervention; (4) Session-RPE mean and fatigue of a certain period of the competition season, could be decreased in an individual player by increasing his carbohydrates intake in the long term, if there are no relevant psycho-emotional disorders; (5) the behavior of the Session-RPE in competition games does not seem to be influenced by the nutritional factors modified in this study. They seem to depend much more on the variation of external non-controllable factors associated with the professional basketball games. Given these results, the different characteristics of each player and the diverse responses observed after the intervention in each individual for all the variables, reinforced the importance of the use of a case study design for research with elite athletes as well as personalized nutritional counselling. In the same way, the different responses obtained for RPE and fatigue in the long term for each player due to modification of nutritional habits, show that there is a dependence of such variables on the physical, psychosocial, emotional and contextual characteristics of each player. Therefore it is proposed that the rigorous control of the qualitative variables that seem to influence the RPE and fatigue in the long term, may facilitate the understanding of data and the determination of unknown factors that could influence these variables. Finally, because Session-RPE is a direct indicator of the internal load of training (psycho-physiological stress experienced by the athlete), the possible attenuation of Session-RPE through the improvement in nutritional habits, would allow to apply the planned external loads of training with less internal stress and better recovery between sessions, with a decrease in fatigue, despite of the advance of the season.
