Mobilidades Urbanas - Welcoming the World: Spectacle, dissent and community cohesion ahead of London 2012

Em uma conjuntura de expansão urbana, intensificação do consumo, mudança climática e escassez de petróleo, o tema das mobilidades assume inquestionável importância econômica, social e ambiental. O seminário internacional "Mobilidades Urbanas: Alicerces para Pesquisas Transnacionais" volta-se, por um lado, para a fomentação do debate em torno do paradigma das novas mobilidades - envolvendo mobilidade espacial e socioeconômica, entre outras - e de sua aplicabilidade no contexto brasileiro; por outro, para a capacitação de pesquisadores cujas investigações tematizam os processos de mobilidade social e espacial a partir de perspectivas comparativas e transnacionais.

Informational spillovers in the pre-1914 London sovereign debt market

We document a novel type of international financial contagion whose driving force is shared financial intermediation. In the London peripheral sovereign debt market during pre-1914 period financial intermediation played a major informational role to investors, most likely because of the absence of international monitoring agencies and the substantial agency costs. Using two events of financial distress – the Brazilian Funding Loan of 1898 and the Greek Funding Loan of 1893 – as quasi-natural experiments, we document that, following the crises, the bond prices of countries with no meaningful economic links to the distressed countries, but shared the same financial intermediary, suffered a reduction relative to the rest of the market. This result is true for the mean, median and the whole distribution of bond prices, and robust to an extensive sensitivity analysis. We interpret it as evidence that the identity of the financial intermediary was informative, i.e, investors extracted information about the soundness of a debtor based on the existence of financial relationships. This spillover, informational in essence, arises as the flip-side of the relational lending coin: contagion arises for the same reason why relational finance, in this case, underwriting, helps alleviate informational and incentive problems.

O Diretor da London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), Craig Calhoun, foi recebido na terça-feira (29) pelo Presidente da Fundação Getulio Vargas, Carlos Ivan Simonsen Leal, durante visita institucional à FGV. Pela manhã, os presidentes das duas instituições tiveram uma reunião com a presença do Secretário-Executivo da LSE, Hugh Martin, do Diretor da DAPP, Marco Aurélio Ruediger, do Diretor da EPGE (Escola Brasileira de Economia e Finanças), Rubens Cysne, da Diretora-Executiva da Editora FGV, Marieta de Moraes Ferreira, e do Prof. Antônio Carlos Porto Gonçalves, também da EPGE. No encontro, foi discutido o maior intercâmbio de alunos entre a LSE e a FGV e em projetos de pesquisa. À tarde, Calhoun realizou uma visita à sede da DAPP, onde participou de uma reunião de apresentação dos métodos de monitoramento e análise de rede desenvolvidos pela DAPP. Participaram da reunião, além do Diretor da DAPP, os pesquisadores Roberta Novis, Amaro Grassi e Pedro Lenhard.

Interaction potential between vortex lines for uniaxial superconductors in the London approximation

Two distinct expressions of the interaction potential between arbitrarily oriented curved vortex lines with respect to the crystal c axis are derived within the London approximation. One of these expressions is used to compute the eigenvalues of the elasticity matrix. We examine the elastic properties of the vortex chain lattice, recently proposed, concerning shearing deformation.

Layered superconductivity models at the London limit and their continuum properties

We write the London limit of the Lawrence Doniach free energy in terms of the local magnetic field and of the average supercurrent over the interplane distance. Starting from this formulation we study a model where the supercurrent at the buffer layers is obtained from the superconducting sheets by a Taylor expansion. The continuum limit of this model gives corrections to the anisotropic London theory due to the layered structure.

Revision of Nathan Banks type specimens of Bdellidae Dugès (Acari: Trombidiformes) of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Cambridge

In this article, seven Bdellidae Dugès (Acari: Trombidiformes) of the Museum of Comparative Zoology, originally described by Nathan Banks are studied: Cyta americana (Banks, 1902), Bdella tenella Banks, 1896, Bdella utilis Banks, 1914, Bdella californica Banks, 1904, Bdella cardinalis Banks, 1894, Bdella peregrina Banks, 1894 and Bdella brevitarsis Banks. Bdella tenella and Bdella californica are transferred to the genera Spinibdella and Bdellodes, respectively. A transitoriedade entre o mundo primitivo e o moderno nas obras The Sea-Wolf e White Fang de Jack London

The American author Jack London wrote the books The Sea-Wolf and White Fang in 1904 and 1906, respectively. The former portrays the life of a literary critic, Humphrey Van Weyden, who after the wreckage of the ship in which he was is rescued by a seal-hunting schooner, where he is obliged to work and to live with the brutal captain Wolf Larsen, and in doing so he develops a more primitive profile. The latter work portrays the life of the eponymous character, a wolf that leaves the wild world in which it was born to follow its last master in the city, thus developing features of the modern world. This paper aims to conduct an analysis of the aspects that allow the transition between the primitive and the modern world in those works

There is also information concerning the American Dietetic Association, the South Carolina Dietetic Association, the Piedmont Dietetic Association, the American Home Economics Association, and the South Carolina Home Economics Association, including conference material, memos, and correspondence. Miss London was president of the South Carolina Dietetic Association in 1967.

“PROVINCIALISM, PICKING SIDES AND BIAS: EFFECTS OF GEOGRAPHY ON MEDIA COVERAGE OF CRYSTAL BRIDGES MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART, 2005-10.”

The development of Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in Bentonville, Arkansas, by Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton has prompted diverse coverage from print and online media. This investigation looked at trends in news stories and commentary from 2005-10 to show how the location of a medium affected coverage. Through the author’s own observations and interviews with journalists and other interested parties, several trends emerged. Media outlets outside Arkansas portrayed the museum as trying to plunder the cultural heritage of local communities and relied partly on the museum���s association with Wal-Mart and stereotypes of Arkansas to frame coverage. Arkansas media, faced with limited cooperation from the museum���s public relations apparatus, typically played a cheerleader role, at times overemphasizing the importance of the collection in the art world and showcasing few critical voices in stories about acquisitions and other areas of the museum���s development.
