A definition of medium voltage (MV) load diagrams was made, based on the data base knowledge discovery process. Clustering techniques were used as support for the agents of the electric power retail markets to obtain specific knowledge of their customers’ consumption habits. Each customer class resulting from the clustering operation is represented by its load diagram. The Two-step clustering algorithm and the WEACS approach based on evidence accumulation (EAC) were applied to an electricity consumption data from a utility client’s database in order to form the customer’s classes and to find a set of representative consumption patterns. The WEACS approach is a clustering ensemble combination approach that uses subsampling and that weights differently the partitions in the co-association matrix. As a complementary step to the WEACS approach, all the final data partitions produced by the different variations of the method are combined and the Ward Link algorithm is used to obtain the final data partition. Experiment results showed that WEACS approach led to better accuracy than many other clustering approaches. In this paper the WEACS approach separates better the customer’s population than Two-step clustering algorithm.

The introduction of wind power generation in several countries around the world, including in European countries, where energy policy directives have encouraged the use of renewables, led to several changes in market and power systems operation. The intensive integration of these sources has led to situations in which the demand is lower than the available renewable resources. In these situations a part of the available generation is wasted if not used for storage or to supply additional demand. This paper proposes a real time demand response methodology based on changing the electricity price for the consumers expecting an increase in the demand in the periods in which that demand is lower than the available renewable generation. The consumers response to the changes in electricity price is characterized by their price elasticity of demand considered distinct for each consumer type. The proposed methodology is applied to the Portuguese power system, in the context of the Iberian electricity market (MIBEL). The renewable-based producers are considered as special producers, with special tariffs, and so it is important to use the energy available as it will be paid anyway. In this context, consumers are entities actively participating in the operation of the market.

The present work concerns a new synthesis approach to prepare niobium based SAPO materials with AEL structure and the characterization ofNb species incorporated within the inorganic matrixes. The SAPO-11 materials were synthesized with or without the help of a small amine, methylamine (MA) as co-template, while Nb was added directly during the preparation of the initial gel. Structural, textural and acidic properties of the different supports were evaluated by XRD, TPR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, pyridine adsorption followed by IR spectroscopy and thermal analyses. Pure and well crystalline Nb based SAPO-11 materials were obtained, either with or without MA, using in the initial gel a low Si content of about 0.6. Increasing the Si content of the gel up to 0.9 led to an important decrease of the samples crystallinity. Niobium was found to incorporate the AEL pores support as small Nb2O5 oxide particles and also as extra framework cationic species (Nb5+), compensating the negative charges from the matrix and generating new Lewis acid sites. The increasing importance given by environmental policies to the dissemination and use of wind power has led to its fast and large integration in power systems. In most cases, this integration has been done in an intensive way, causing several impacts and challenges in current and future power systems operation and planning. One of these challenges is dealing with the system conditions in which the available wind power is higher than the system demand. This is one of the possible applications of demand response, which is a very promising resource in the context of competitive environments that integrates even more amounts of distributed energy resources, as well as new players. The methodology proposed aims the maximization of the social welfare in a smart grid operated by a virtual power player that manages the available energy resources. When facing excessive wind power generation availability, real time pricing is applied in order to induce the increase of consumption so that wind curtailment is minimized. The proposed method is especially useful when actual and day-ahead wind forecast differ significantly. The proposed method has been computationally implemented in GAMS optimization tool and its application is illustrated in this paper using a real 937-bus distribution network with 20310 consumers and 548 distributed generators, some of them with must take contracts.

Biodiesel is the main alternative to fossil diesel and it may be produced from different feedstocks such as semi-refined vegetable oils, waste frying oils or animal fats. However, these feedstocks usually contain significant amounts of free fatty acids (FFA) that make them inadequate for the direct base catalyzed transesterification reaction (where the FFA content should be lower than 4%). The present work describes a possible method for the pre-treatment of oils with a high content of FFA (20 to 50%) by esterification with glycerol. In order to reduce the FFA content, the reaction between these FFA and an esterification agent is carried out before the transesterification reaction. The reaction kinetics was studied in terms of its main factors such astemperature, % of glycerin excess, % of catalyst used, stirring velocity and type of catalyst used. The results showed that glycerolysis is a promising pretreatment to acidic oils or fats (> 20%) as they led to the production of an intermediary material with a low content of FFA that can be used directly in thetransesterification reaction for the production of biodiesel. Avaliação do estado do gene Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor (EGFR), por Silver In Situ Hibridization (SISH), tem-se destacado como biomarcador preditivo na resposta à terapêutica. O principal objectivo foi optimizar a etapa de recuperação por calor da metodologia automatizada SISH Dual-Colour, em carcinomas pulmonares fixados em formol durante 24 e 72 horas. A optimização levou a um aumento da preservação do contorno nuclear e da intensidade e contraste dos sinais para os dois tempos de fixação, permitindo avaliar o estado do EGFR em 83,3% dos casos em estudo. A SISH Dual-Colour é uma alternativa para avaliar o estado do EGFR.

Since last decade, the debate on the parameter which reflects prostate cancer sensitivity to fractionation in a radiotherapy treatment, the α/β, has become extensive. Unlike most tumors, the low labeling indices (LI) and large potential doubling time that characterize the prostate tumor led some authors to consider that it may behave as a late responding tissue. So far, the existing studies with regard to this subject point to a low value of α/β, around 2.7 Gy, which may be considered as a therapeutic gain in relation to surrounding normal tissues by using fewer and larger fractions. The aim of this paper is to review several estimates that have been made in the last few years regarding the prostate cancer α/β both from clinical and experimental data, as well as the set of factors that have potentially influenced these evaluations.

Intensive use of Distributed Generation (DG) represents a change in the paradigm of power systems operation making small-scale energy generation and storage decision making relevant for the whole system. This paradigm led to the concept of smart grid for which an efficient management, both in technical and economic terms, should be assured. This paper presents a new approach to solve the economic dispatch in smart grids. The proposed methodology for resource management involves two stages. The first one considers fuzzy set theory to define the natural resources range forecast as well as the load forecast. The second stage uses heuristic optimization to determine the economic dispatch considering the generation forecast, storage management and demand response

OBJECTIVE: Various support measures useful for promoting joint change approaches to the improvement of both shiftworking arrangements and safety and health management systems were reviewed. A particular focus was placed on enterprise-level risk reduction measures linking working hours and management systems. METHODS: Voluntary industry-based guidelines on night and shift work for department stores and the chemical, automobile and electrical equipment industries were examined. Survey results that had led to the compilation of practicable measures to be included in these guidelines were also examined. The common support measures were then compared with ergonomic checkpoints for plant maintenance work involving irregular nightshifts. On the basis of this analysis, a new night and shift work checklist was designed. RESULTS: Both the guidelines and the plant maintenance work checkpoints were found to commonly cover multiple issues including work schedules and various job-related risks. This close link between shiftwork arrangements and risk management was important as shiftworkers in these industries considered teamwork and welfare services to be essential for managing risks associated with night and shift work. Four areas found suitable for participatory improvement by managers and workers were work schedules, ergonomic work tasks, work environment and training. The checklist designed to facilitate participatory change processes covered all these areas. CONCLUSIONS: The checklist developed to describe feasible workplace actions was suitable for integration with comprehensive safety and health management systems and offered valuable opportunities for improving working time arrangements and job content together.

A ocorrência de grandes escândalos financeiros na última década, um pouco por todo o mundo, provocou uma crise de confiança na informação financeira prestada pelas empresas e levou à discussão de conceitos como Corporate Governance e Expectation Gap e a uma “revolução” no mundo da auditoria. A necessidade de confiança na opinião dos auditores conduziu à discussão acerca de como é que o trabalho de auditoria é realizado, em que “bases” é que o auditor determina o que analisar e, por último, como decide o que é material ou não. Esta discussão traz a si associado o conceito de materialidade. O objectivo deste estudo é compreender os aspectos inerentes à determinação da materialidade e a sua importância, tanto no planeamento como na avaliação de resultados. O presente trabalho está estruturado em sete capítulos, correspondendo os cinco primeiros ao enquadramento teórico do tema, realizado através de revisão de literatura. No sexto capítulo explicita-se a investigação empírica realizada sobre a forma como a materialidade é entendida e utilizada pelas Sociedades de Revisores Oficiais de Contas (SROC) em Portugal. Terminamos com a conclusão do estudo, em que, para além das conclusões obtidas, se indicam os problemas e obstáculos encontrados ao longo do mesmo, bem como possibilidades de investigação futura.

A presente investigação desenvolve o tema da sustentabilidade, ou dito de outra forma, desenvolvimento sustentável. Isto interessa aos países, às organizações e aos cidadãos em geral. Neste pressuposto, este trabalho centra-se nos relatório de sustentabilidade, designação que, actualmente, vem substituir outros que se sucederam ao longo dos tempos, por exemplo: relatórios de responsabilidade social; relatórios ambientais; relatórios de ambiente, saúde e segurança. Porém, os relatórios de sustentabilidade, para serem totalmente compreendidos, devem ser inseridos nos sistemas de informação e comunicação das organizações, onde é verificável que cada vez mais se quer prestar contas, sobre as acções desenvolvidas na esfera da sustentabilidade, de forma credível. No processo de verificação e validação, a auditoria e os auditores têm um papel crucial, contudo, verifica-se que teóricos e práticos, nomeadamente, as empresas de referência mostram que a "sustentabilidade" não deve ser tratada "à parte" mas estar presente em tudo o que é realizado, e neste sentido, as três dimensões que a revelam: ecónomica, social e ambiental. Neste quadro, o objectivo desta dissertação anda em torno de se perceber qual será o futuro dos relatórios de sustentabilidade. O trabalho desenvolvido confirma a problemática que guiou o estudo. Tende-se e é recomendável que as organizações venham a elaborar relatórios únicos integrados, não obstante da possibilidade da existência de relatórios específicos e subsistemas de informação e comunicação, centrados no "verde".

A mobilidade é considerada um dos factores chave na sustentabilidade e desenvolvimento de qualquer economia. Em Portugal essa realidade não é diferente. Em 2011 verifica-se que 41% do consumo global de combustíveis pertence ao sector rodoviário [1] o que evidencia a sua relevância na economia do país. No que concerne aos veículos de tracção eléctrica, começaram a surgir nos finais do séc. XIX, e no início do séc. XX nos Estados Unidos da América representavam 38% dos veículos [2]. Diversos factores económicos e tecnológicos conduziram a um crescente desinteresse por parte da indústria em investir na produção deste tipo de veículos. Contudo com a introdução de baterias de iões de lítio em veículos de tracção eléctrica, torna-os viáveis e competitivos. Neste trabalho é proposto o desenvolvimento de um sistema de gestão de baterias de iões de lítio do tipo LiFePO4 para aplicação em veículos eléctricos. O sistema deverá assegurar a protecção das baterias e indicar o estado de carga das mesmas. Este sistema permitirá uma optimização no uso deste género de baterias, proporcionará uma melhor utilização, aumentando a sua vida útil. O sistema irá ser aplicado e testado experimentalmente no veículo eléctrico ecológico (Veeco). No âmbito do projecto Veeco foi projectado e construído um banco de ensaios utilizado na análise do comportamento das baterias, e determinar quais os requisitos necessários para o sistema de gestão desenvolvido. Foi também projectado e realizado um sistema de aquisição e processamento de dados que permite obter informações acerca da bateria, dados que estarão disponíveis no interface Homem-máquina do Veeco.
