Background: Research on life expectancy has demonstrated the negative impact of disability on the health of older adults and its differential effects on women as evidenced by their higher disabled life expectancy (DLE). The goal of the present study was to investigate gender differences in total life expectancy (TLE), disability-free life expectancy (DFLE), and DLE; examine gender differences on personal care assistance among older adults in Sao Paulo, Brazil; and discuss the implications for public policies. Methods: The sample was drawn from two waves (2000, 2006) of the dataset of Salud, Bienestar, y Envejecimiento, a large longitudinal study conducted in Sao Paulo (n = 2,143). The study assessed disability using the activities of daily living (ADL). The interpolation of Markov Chain method was used to estimate gender differences in TLE, DLE, and DFLE. Findings: TLE at age 60 years was approximately 5 years longer for women than men. Women aged 60 years were expected to live 28% of their remaining lives twice the percentage for men with at least one ADL disability. These women also lived more years (M = 0.71, SE = 0.42) with three or more ADL disabilities than men (M = 0.82, SE = 0.16). In terms of personal care assistance, women received more years of assistance than men. Conclusion: Among older adults in Sao Paulo, women lived longer lives but experienced a higher and more severe disability burden than men. In addition, although women received more years of personal assistance than men, women experienced more unmet care assistance needs. Copyright (C) 2011 by the Jacobs Institute of Women`s Health. OBJECTIVE: The goal was to review published studies of analgesic effects of sweet solutions, to ascertain areas with sufficient evidence of effectiveness and areas of uncertainty. METHODS: Databases searched included Medline, Embase, the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature database, and PsycINFO, using the terms pain*, infant*, neonat*, newborn*, sucrose, glucose, and alternative sugars. Publications were sorted according to type, year, painful procedure studied, placebo/no-treatment groups, population studied, and country of publication. RESULTS: A total of 298 relevant unique publications involving human infants were identified; 125 (42%) were primary research studies, of which 116 (93%) were randomized controlled trials. Healthy preterm or term newborns were included in 82 studies (65%), and sick or very low birth weight infants were included in 22 (18%). Most studies included single episodes of painful procedures, with only 3 (2%) conducted over long periods. Procedures investigated most frequently were heel lance (49%), venipuncture (14%), and intramuscular injection (14%). Placebo or no-treatment groups were included in 111 studies (89%); in 103 (93%) of those studies, sweet solutions reduced behavioral responses, compared with placebo/no treatment. CONCLUSION: Clinical equipoise relating to analgesic effects of sweet solutions no longer exists for single episodes of procedures for healthy preterm and term newborn infants. Uncertainties include outcomes after prolonged use of sweet solutions, concomitant use of other analgesics, and effectiveness beyond the newborn period. The purpose of this study was to test the hypotheses that in obese children: 1) hypocaloric diet (D) improves both heart rate recovery at 1 min (Delta HRR1) cfter an exercise test, and cardiac autonomic nervous system activity (CANSA) in obese children; 2) Diet and exercise training (DET) combined leads to greater improvement in both Delta HRR1 after an exercise test and in CANSA, than D alone. Moreover, we examined the relationships among Delta HRR1, CANSA, cardiorespiratory fitness and anthropometric variables (AV) in obese children submitted to D and to DET. 33 obese children (10 +/- 0.2 years; body mass index (BMI) >95(th) percentile) were divided into 2 groups: D (n = 15; BMI = 31 +/- 1 kg/m(2)) and DET (n = 18; 29 +/- 1 kg/m(2)). All children performed a maximal cardiopulmonary exercise test on a treadmill. The Delta HRR1 was defined as the difference between heart rate at peak and at 1-min post-exercise. CANSA was assessed using power spectral analysis of heart rate variability at rest. The sympathovagal balance (low frequency and high frequency ratio, LF/HF) was measured. After interventions, all obese children showed reduced body weight (P < 0.05). The D group did not improve in terms of peak VO(2), Delta HRR1 or LF/HF ratio (P > 0.05). In contrast, the DET group showed increased peak VO(2) (P = 0.01) and improved Delta HRR1 (Delta HRR1 = 37.3 +/- 2.6; P = 0.01) and LF/HF ratio (P = 0.001). The DET group demonstrated significant relationships among Delta HRR1, peak VO(2) and CANSA (P < 0.05). In conclusion, DET, in contrast to D, promoted improved Delta HRR1 and CANSA in obese children, suggesting a positive influence of increased levels of cardiorespiratory fitness by exercise training on cardiac autonomic activity.

The purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that in obese children: 1) Ventilatory efficiency (VentE) is decreased during graded exercise; and 2) Weight loss through diet alone (D) improves VentE, and 3) diet associated with exercise training (DET) leads to greater improvement in VentE than by D. Thirty-eight obese children (10 +/- 0.2 years; BMI > 95(th) percentile) were randomly divided into two Study groups: D (n=17; BMI = 30 +/- 1 kg/m(2)) and DET (n = 21; 28 +/- 1 kg/m(2)). Ten lean children were included in a control group (10 +/- 0.3 years; 17 +/- 0.5 kg/m(2)). All children performed maximal treadmill testing with respiratory gas analysis (breath-by-breath) to determine the ventilatory anaerobic threshold (VAT) and peak oxygen consumption (VO(2) peak). VentE was determined by the VE/VCO(2) method at VAT. Obese children showed lower VO(2) peak and lower VentE than controls (p < 0.05). After interventions, all obese children reduced body weight (p < 0.05). D group did not improve in terms of VO(2) peak or VentE (p > 0.05). In contrast, the DET group showed increased VO(2) peak (p = 0.01) and improved VentE(Delta VE/VCO(2) = -6.1 +/- 0.9; p = 0.01). VentE is decreased in obese children, where weight loss by means of DET, but not D alone, improves VentE and cardiorespiratory fitness during graded exercise.

The aim of the present study was to compare and correlate training impulse (TRIMP) estimates proposed by Banister (TRIMP(Banister)), Stagno (TRIMP(Stagno)) and Manzi (TRIMP(Manzi)). The subjects were submitted to an incremental test on cycle ergometer with heart rate and blood lactate concentration measurements. In the second occasion, they performed 30 min. of exercise at the intensity corresponding to maximal lactate steady state, and TRIMP(Banister), TRIMP(Stagno) and TRIMP(Manzi) were calculated. The mean values of TRIMP(Banister) (56.5 +/- 8.2 u.a.) and TRIMP(Stagno) (51.2 +/- 12.4 u.a.) were not different (P > 0.05) and were highly correlated (r = 0.90). Besides this, they presented a good agreement level, which means low bias and relatively narrow limits of agreement. On the other hand, despite highly correlated (r = 0.93), TRIMP(Stagno) and TRIMP(Manzi) (73.4 +/- 17.6 u.a.) were different (P < 0.05), with low agreement level. The TRIMP(Banister) e TRIMP(Manzi) estimates were not different (P = 0.06) and were highly correlated (r = 0.82), but showed low agreement level. Thus, we concluded that the investigated TRIMP methods are not equivalent. In practical terms, it seems prudent monitor the training process assuming only one of the estimates.

The adaptive process in motor learning was examined in terms of effects of varying amounts of constant practice performed before random practice. Participants pressed five response keys sequentially, the last one coincident with the lighting of a final visual stimulus provided by a complex coincident timing apparatus. Different visual stimulus speeds were used during the random practice. 33 children (M age=11.6 yr.) were randomly assigned to one of three experimental groups: constant-random, constant-random 33%, and constant-random 66%. The constant-random group practiced constantly until they reached a criterion of performance stabilization three consecutive trials within 50 msec. of error. The other two groups had additional constant practice of 33 and 66%, respectively, of the number of trials needed to achieve the stabilization criterion. All three groups performed 36 trials under random practice; in the adaptation phase, they practiced at a different visual stimulus speed adopted in the stabilization phase. Global performance measures were absolute, constant, and variable errors, and movement pattern was analyzed by relative timing and overall movement time. There was no group difference in relation to global performance measures and overall movement time. However, differences between the groups were observed on movement pattern, since constant-random 66% group changed its relative timing performance in the adaptation phase.

The effects of alkaline treatments of the wheat straw with sodium hydroxide were investigated. The optimal condition for extraction of hemicelluloses was found to be with 0.50 mol/l sodium hydroxide at 55C for 2 h. This resulted in the release of 17.3% of hemicellulose (% dry starting material), corresponding to the dissolution of 49.3% of the original hemicellulose. The yields were determined by gravimetric analysis and expressed as a proportion of the starting material. Chemical composition and physico-chemical properties of the samples of hemicelluloses were elucidated by a combination of sugar analyses, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), and thermal analysis. The results showed that the treatments were very effective on the extraction of hemicelluloses from wheat straw and that the extraction intensity (expressed in terms of alkali concentration) had a great influence on the yield and chemical features of the hemicelluloses. The FTIR analysis revealed typical signal pattern for the hemicellulosic fraction in the 1,200-1,000 cm(-1) region. Bands between 1,166 and 1,000 cm(-1) are typical of xylans.

This work presents results of microstructural characterization of as-cast Cr-Si alloys. The alloys were prepared by arc melting pure Cr (min. 99.996%) and Si (min. 99.998%) powder mixtures under argon atmosphere in a water-cooled copper crucible with nonconsumable tungsten electrode and titanium getter. The phases were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), using the back-scattered electron (BSE) image mode and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results confirm the currently accepted Cr-Si phase diagram in terms of the invariant reactions and solid phases present in this system. Small corrections are proposed for the compositions of the liquid phase in the following reactions: (i) L double left right arrow Cr-ss+Cr3Si, from 15 to 16 at.% Si; (ii) L+alpha Cr5Si3 double left right arrow CrSi, from 51 at.% Si to slightly above 53 at.% Si; (iii) L double left right arrow CrSi+CrSi2, from 56 to slightly above 57 at.% Si; (iv) L double left right arrow CrSi2+Si, from 82 to slightly above 85 at.% Si. Milkfat (MF)/soybean oil (SBO) blends ranging from 50% to 100% of milkfat (w/w) were enzymatically interesterified with a sn-1,3 specific lipase from Rhizopus oryzae immobilized on polysiloxane-polyvinyl alcohol matrix, in a solvent free medium. Interesterification progress was monitored by following the changes in the relative proportions of 50-carbon triacylglycerols (TAGS) to 44-carbon TAGs (50/44 ratio) in the reaction. The starting materials and products were also analyzed in terms of consistency measured in a texturometer. All reactions gave interesterified (IE) products with lower consistency than non-interesterified (NIE) MF:SBO blends and interesterification degree varied from 0.54 to 2.60 in 48 h reaction. The highest interesterification degree was achieved for 65:35 MF:SBO blends, which gave 76% reduction in the consistency. These results showed the potential of the immobilized lipase to change the TAGs profile of the MF:SBO blend allowing to obtain cold-spreadable milkfat. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Glycerol-fatty acid esterification has been conducted with lipase from Penicillium camembertii lipase immobilized on epoxy SiO(2)-PVA in solvent-free media, with the major product being 1-monoglyceride, a useful food emulsifier. For a given set of initial conditions, the influence of reaction was measured in terms of product formation and selectivity using different fatty acids as acyl donors. Results were found to be relatively dependent of the chain length of the fatty acids, showing high specificity for both myristic and palmytic acids attaining final mixture that fulfills the requirements established by the World Health Organization to be used as food emulsifiers. This study provides a preliminary contribution to the development of a bioprocess for the contintious production of xylitol from hemicellulosic hydrolyzate utilizing Candida guilliermondii cells immobilized onto natural sugarcane bagasse fibers. To this purpose, cells of this yeast were submitted to batch tests of ""in situ"" adsorption onto crushed and powdered sugarcane bagasse after treatment with 0.5 M NaOH. The results obtained on a xylose-based semi-synthetic medium were evaluated in terms of immobilization efficiency, cell retention and specific growth rates of suspended, immobilized and total cells. The first two parameters were shown to increase along the immobilization process, reached maximum values of 50.5% and 0.31 g immobilized cells/g bagasse after 21 h and then sharply decreased. The specific growth rate of suspended cells continuously increased during the immobilization tests, while that of the immobilized ones, after an initial growth, exhibited decreasing values. Under the conditions selected for cell immobilization, fermentation also took place with promising results. The yields of xylitol and biomass on consumed xylose were 0.65 and 0.18 g/g, respectively, xylitol and biomass productivities 0.66 and 0.13 g L-1 h(-1), and the efficiency of xylose-to-xylitol bioconversion was 70.8%. The crystallisation behaviour for alloys in the Al-rich corner in the Al-La-Ni system is reported in this paper Alloys were selected based on the topological instability criterion (lambda criterion) calculated from the alloy composition and metallic radii of the alloying elements and aluminum Amorphous ribbons were produced by melt-spinning and the crystallisation reactions were analysed by X-ray diffraction and calorimetry The results showed that increasing the values of lambda from 0.072 to 0.16 resulted in the following changes in the crystallisation behaviour, as predicted by the lambda criterion (a) nanocrystallisation of alpha-Al for the alloy composition corresponding to lambda = 0 072 and (b) detection of the glass transition temperature, T(g), for the alloys with composition close to lambda approximate to 0.1 line. For compositions corresponding to both ends of the lambda approximate to 0 1 line (near the binaries lines) T(g) could be detected only in the ""intermediary"" central region, and the alloy we produced in this region was considered the best glass former for the Al-rich corner Also, except for the alloys with the highest NI content, crystallisation proceeded by two distinct exothermic peaks which are typical of nanocrystallisation transformation. These behaviours are discussed in terms of compositional (lambda parameter) and topological aspects to account for cluster formation in the amorphous phase. This paper proposes a novel computer vision approach that processes video sequences of people walking and then recognises those people by their gait. Human motion carries different information that can be analysed in various ways. The skeleton carries motion information about human joints, and the silhouette carries information about boundary motion of the human body. Moreover, binary and gray-level images contain different information about human movements. This work proposes to recover these different kinds of information to interpret the global motion of the human body based on four different segmented image models, using a fusion model to improve classification. Our proposed method considers the set of the segmented frames of each individual as a distinct class and each frame as an object of this class. The methodology applies background extraction using the Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM), a scale reduction based on the Wavelet Transform (WT) and feature extraction by Principal Component Analysis (PCA). We propose four new schemas for motion information capture: the Silhouette-Gray-Wavelet model (SGW) captures motion based on grey level variations; the Silhouette-Binary-Wavelet model (SBW) captures motion based on binary information; the Silhouette-Edge-Binary model (SEW) captures motion based on edge information and the Silhouette Skeleton Wavelet model (SSW) captures motion based on skeleton movement. The classification rates obtained separately from these four different models are then merged using a new proposed fusion technique. The results suggest excellent performance in terms of recognising people by their gait.

We proposed a connection admission control (CAC) to monitor the traffic in a multi-rate WDM optical network. The CAC searches for the shortest path connecting source and destination nodes, assigns wavelengths with enough bandwidth to serve the requests, supervises the traffic in the most required nodes, and if needed activates a reserved wavelength to release bandwidth according to traffic demand. We used a scale-free network topology, which includes highly connected nodes ( hubs), to enhance the monitoring procedure. Numerical results obtained from computational simulations show improved network performance evaluated in terms of blocking probability.

The design of supplementary damping controllers to mitigate the effects of electromechanical oscillations in power systems is a highly complex and time-consuming process, which requires a significant amount of knowledge from the part of the designer. In this study, the authors propose an automatic technique that takes the burden of tuning the controller parameters away from the power engineer and places it on the computer. Unlike other approaches that do the same based on robust control theories or evolutionary computing techniques, our proposed procedure uses an optimisation algorithm that works over a formulation of the classical tuning problem in terms of bilinear matrix inequalities. Using this formulation, it is possible to apply linear matrix inequality solvers to find a solution to the tuning problem via an iterative process, with the advantage that these solvers are widely available and have well-known convergence properties. The proposed algorithm is applied to tune the parameters of supplementary controllers for thyristor controlled series capacitors placed in the New England/New York benchmark test system, aiming at the improvement of the damping factor of inter-area modes, under several different operating conditions. The results of the linear analysis are validated by non-linear simulation and demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed procedure.
