Samples from 15 holes at nine sites in the Izu-Bonin-Mariana region were examined for calcareous nannofossils, foraminifers, diatoms, and radiolarians. The ages of the containing sediments range from middle Eocene to Holocene. Biostratigraphic indicators date the sediments flanking Conical Seamount in the Mariana forearc as Pleistocene, whereas sediments flanking a seamount at Site 784 in the Izu-Bonin forearc were dated as middle Miocene. Sediments in the Izu-Bonin forearc are as old as the middle Eocene. Useful magnetostratigraphic results range from Holocene to mid-Miocene. Nannofossils provided the most useful biostratigraphic framework, but were supplemented with satisfactory agreement by data from foraminifers, radiolarians, and diatoms. Evidence from the biostratigraphic framework shows the likely presence of a sedimentary hiatus in the early Miocene. The presence of a single short hiatus in the early Oligocene and two in the late Miocene and early Pliocene is suggested, but supporting evidence other than nannofossil data is sparse. Evidence from approximate age-depth plots shows that sediment accumulation varies from hole to hole. The fastest rates of sediment accumulation were found to be in the late Miocene to Holocene whereas the slowest rates are present in the middle Eocene to Oligocene. The increased sedimentation rates in the late Miocene to Holocene resulted from an increase in volcanogenic sediment content from an uncertain source.

A standard biostratigraphic system, based upon diatom datum levels previously correlated to the paleomagnetic record, was applied to Deep Sea Drilling Project Sites 501/504 and 505. Sedimentation appears to have been constant at the three sites, averaging 50 m/m.y. at Sites 501/504 and 60 m/m.y. at Site 505. Calcium carbonate is rather poorly preserved at both sites, because of depth of water and, at Sites 501/504, alteration by diagenesis. Siliceous microfossils are common and moderately well preserved at the three sites; at Sites 501/504, diatoms disappear abruptly below the first occurrence of chert. The uppermost Miocene diatom assemblage occurs just above chert and is characterized by a strong dominance of Thalassionema and Thalassiothrix, which implies very high silica production during the latest Miocene; the chert probably is derived from a similar assemblage. In the earliest Pliocene, silica production appears to have decreased sharply; about 3 Ma, preservation of calcium carbonate also diminished, suggesting a shoaling of the CCD. At 2 Ma, there occurred a short interval of low production of both calcium carbonate and silica, which lasted into the earliest Pleistocene.

Detailed mineralogical and geochemical studies were performed on samples from selected time intervals recovered during Leg 79 on the Mazagan Plateau. The uppermost Albian and Cenomanian sediments of Sites 545 and 547 can be correlated on the basis of mineralogy and geochemistry; these sediments illustrate differential settling processes and the existence of hot climates with alternating humid and dry seasons in the African coastal zone. The upper Aptian to Albian black shales of Site 545 point to an irregular alternation of tectonic activity and relaxation stages, allowing different behaviors in the reworking of soils, crystalline rocks, and sediments born in peri-marine basins. The barren lower Mesozoic reddish sediments and evaporitic series of Sites 546 and 547 are characterized by a strong physical erosion of sialic landscapes, without clear evidence of post-depositional metamorphic events. At Site 546 strong early diagenetic processes in a confined evaporitic environment affect both the mineralogy and the geochemistry of pre-Miocene rocks.

The Pliocene-Quaternary sediments that we drilled at eight sites in the Gulf of California consist of silty clays to clayey silts, diatomaceous oozes, and mixtures of both types. In this chapter I have summarized various measurements of their physical properties, relating this information to burial depth and effective overburden pressure. Rapid deposition and frequent intercalations of mud turbidites may cause underconsolidation in some cases; overconsolidation probably can be excluded. General lithification begins at depths between 200 and 300 meters sub-bottom, at porosities between 55 and 60% (for silty clays) and as high as 70% (for diatomaceous ooze). Diatom-rich sediments have low strength and very high porosities (70-90%) and can maintain this state to a depth of nearly 400 meters (where the overburden pressure = 1.4 MPa). The field compressibility curves of all sites are compared to data published earlier. Where sediments are affected by basaltic sills, these curves clearly show the effects of additional loading and thermal stress (diagenesis near the contacts). Strength measurements on well-preserved hydraulic piston cores yielded results similar to those obtained on selected samples from standard drilling. Volumetric shrinkage dropped to low values at 100 to 400 meters burial depth (0.3 to 2.0 MPa overburden pressure). Porosity after shrinkage depends on the composition of sediments.
