Zinc oxide is a widely used white inorganic pigment. Transition metal ions are used as chromophores and originate the ceramic pigments group. In this context, ZnO particles doped with Co, Fe, and V were synthesized by the polymeric precursors method, Pechini method. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG) techniques were used to accurately characterize the distinct thermal events occurring during synthesis. The TG and DSC results revealed a series of decomposition temperatures due to different exothermal events, which were identified as H(2)O elimination, organic compounds degradation and phase formation. The samples were structurally characterized by X-Ray diffractometry revealing the formation of single phase, corresponding to the crystalline matrix of ZnO. The samples were optically characterized by diffuse reflectance measurements and colorimetric coordinates L*, a*, b* were calculated for the pigment powders. The pigment powders presented a variety of colors ranging from white (ZnO), green (Zn(0.97)Co(0.03)O), yellow (Zn(0.97)Fe(0.03)O), and beige (Zn(0.97)V(0.03)O).

Bismuth germanate films were prepared by dip coating and spin coating techniques and the dependence of the luminescent properties of the samples on the resin viscosity and deposition technique was investigated. The resin used for the preparation of the films was obtained via Pechini method, employing the precursors Bi(2)O(3) and GeO(2). Citric acid and ethylene glycol were used as chelating and cross-linking agents, respectively. Results from X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy indicated that the films sintered at 700 degrees C for 10 h presented the single crystalline phase Bi(4)Ge(3)O(12). SEM images of the films have shown that homogeneous flat films can be produced by the two techniques investigated. All the samples presented the typical Bi(4)Ge(3)O(12) emission band centred at 505 nm. Films with 3.1 mu m average thickness presented 80% of the luminescence intensity registered for the single crystal at the maximum wavelength. Published by Elsevier B.V.

This study presents the syntheses and characterization of 2-mercaptopyridine (pyS(-)) complexes containing ruthenium(II) with the following general formula [Ru(pyS)(2)(P-P)], P-P = (c-dppen) = cis-1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylene) (1); (dppe)=1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane (2); (dppp)=1,3-bis(diphenylphosphino)propane (3) and (dppb) = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane (4). The complexes were synthesized from the mer- or fac-[RuCl(3)(NO)(P-P)] precursors in the presence of triethylamine in methanol solution with dependence of the product on the P-P ligand. The reaction of pyS- with a ruthenium complex containing a bulky aromatic diphosphine dppb disclosed a major product with a dangling coordinated dppbO-P, the [Ru(pyS)(2)(NO)(eta(1)-dppbO-P)]PF(6) (5). In addition, this work also presents and discusses the spectroscopic and electrochemical behavior of 1-5. and report the X-ray structures for I and S. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

LaFe(1-x)CO(x)O(3) perovskites were conventionally or nanocasting synthesized. The nanocasting involved the preparation of a micro-mesoporous carbon mould using a Silica Aerosil 200 and a carbon source. Then, perovskites were carbon cast at 800 degrees C. The solids were characterized by XRD, N(2) sorption, FTIR, TGA/DTG, SEM and TEM. N(2) sorption evidenced that the nanocast perovskites did not show significant intraparticle porosity in despite of their enhanced (30-50 m(2)/g) specific surface area (SSA). Nevertheless, TEM images, XRD and Rietveld refinement data showed that the solids are constituted at least by 97 wt% of perovskite phase and by agglomerates smaller than 100 nm constituted by crystallites of about 6 nm. TGA/DTG results demonstrated carbon oxidation during the perovskite formation, thus eliminating the template effect and facilitating the occurrence of sintering, which limited the SSA increase. The nanocast perovskites were more active in the reduction of NO than the uncast ones, behavior that was attributed to the increase in their SSA that allows the exposure of a higher number of accessible active sites. However, the perovskite composition and the presence of impurities can reduce the effect of the improvement of the textural properties. The nanocast perovskites also showed high thermal and catalytic stability, corroborating their potential as catalysts for the studied reaction. (C) 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The reaction of cis-[RuCl2(dppb)(N-N)], dppb = 1,4-bis(diphenylphosphino)butane, complexes with the ligand HSpymMe(2), 4,6-dimethyl-2-mercaptopyrimidine, yielded the cationic complexes [Ru(SpymMe(2))(dppb)(N-N)]PF6, N-N = bipy (1) and Me-bipy (2), bipy = 2,2`-bipyridine and Me-bipy = 4,4`dimethyl-2,2`-bipyridine, which were characterized by spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques and X-ray crystallography and elemental analysis. Additionally, preliminary in vitro tests for antimycobacterial activity against Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv ATCC 27264 and antitumor activity against the MDA-MB-231 human breast tumor cell line were carried out on the new complexes and also on the precursors cis-[RuCl2(dppb)(N-N)], N-N = bipy (3) and Me-bipy (4) and the free ligands dppb, bipy, Me-bipy and SpymMe(2). The minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of compounds needed to kill 90% of mycobacterial cells and the IC50 values for the antitumor activity were determined. Compounds 1-4 exhibited good in vitro activity against M. tuberculosis, with MIC values ranging between 0.78 and 6.25 mu g/mL, compared to the free ligands (MIC of 25 to >50 mu g/mL) and the drugs used to treat tuberculosis. Complexes I and 2 also showed promising antitumor activity, with IC50 values of 0.46 +/- 0.02 and 0.43 +/- 0.08 mu M, respectively, against MDA-MB-231 breast tumor cells. (C) 2008 Elsevier Inc. The ""Ru(P-P)"" unit (P-P = diphosphine) is recognized to be an important core in catalytic species for hydrogenation of unsaturated organic substrates. Thus, in this study we synthesized six new complexes containing this core, including the binuclear complex [(dppb)(CO)Cl(2)Ru-pz-RuCl(2)(CO)(dPPb)] (pz = pyrazine) which can be used as a precursor for the synthesis of cationic carbonyl species of general formula [RuCl(CO)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) (N-N = diimine). Complexes with the formula (RuCl(py)(dppb)(N-N)]PF(6) were synthesized by exhaustive electrolysis of these carbonyl compounds or from the precursors [RuCl(2)(dppb)(N-N)]. The new complexes were characterized by microanalysis, conductivity measurements, IR and (31)P{(1)H)} NMR spectroscopy, cyclic voltammetry and X-ray crystallography. (C) 2010 Elsevier Ltd. In all cases the thiosemicarbazone is attached to the metal center through the sulfur atom. Complexes (1-6), together with the corresponding ligands and the Ru precursors were evaluated for their ability to in vitro suppress the growth of Trypanosoma cruzi. All complexes were more active than their corresponding ligands and precursors. Complexes (1-3) and (5) revealed to be the most active among all studied compounds with ID(50) = 0.6-0.8 mu M. In all cases the association of the thiosemicarbazone with ruthenium, dppb and bipyridine or phenanthroline in one same complex proved to be an excellent strategy for activity improvement. The whole Valle Fertil-La Huerta section appears as a calc-alkaline plutonic suite typical of a destructive plate margin. New Sr and Nd isotopic whole-rock data and published whole-rock geochemistry suggest that the less-evolved intermediate (dioritic) rocks can be derived by magmatic differentiation, mainly by hornblende + plagioclase +/- Fe-Ti oxide fractional crystallization, from mafic (gabbroic) igneous precursors. Closed-system differentiation, however, cannot produce the typical intermediate (tonalitic) and silicic (granodioritic) plutonic rocks, which requires a preponderant contribution of crustal components. Intermediate and silicic plutonic rocks from Valle Fertil-La Huerta section have formed in a plate subduction setting where the thermal and material input of mantle-derived magmas promoted fusion of fertile metasedimentary rocks and favored mixing of gabbroic or dioritic magmas with crustal granitic melts. Magma mixing is observable in the field and evident in variations of chemical elemental parameters and isotopic ratios, revealing that hybridization coupled with fractionation of magmas took place in the crust. Consideration of the whole-rock geochemical and isotopic data in the context of the Famatinian-Puna magmatic belt as a whole demonstrates that the petrologic model postulated for the Sierra Valle Fertil-La Huerta section has the potential to explain the generation of plutonic and volcanic rocks across the Early Ordovician paleoarc from central and northwestern Argentina. As the petrologic model does not require the intervention of old Precambrian continental crust, the nature of the basement on which thick accretionary turbiditic sequences were deposited remains a puzzling aspect. Discussion in this paper provides insights into the nature of magmatic source rocks and mechanisms of magma generation in Cordilleran-type volcano-plutonic arcs of destructive plate margins. Three different cerium citrate-based precursors were used for synthesizing CeO(2) through thermal treatment. Three morphological types of CeO(2) were obtained. Characterization of these oxides was carried out by XRD patterns, SEM microscopy, N(2) adsorption isotherms, Raman spectroscopy, zeta potential, and UV/Vis luminescence. Ozonation of phenol catalyzed by CeO(2) was studied as a representative reaction of environmental interest. The differences on the catalytic activity showed by these three oxides could be correlated to amounts of Ce(3+) on CeO(2) surface and, consequently, to the demand for oxygen needed to burn each precursor.

The first one-pot synthesis of neutral and electron-rich [hydroxy(tosyloxy)iodo]arenes (HTIBs) from iodine and arenes is presented, thereby avoiding the need for expensive iodine(III) precursors. A large set of including a polyfluorinated analogue, can be obtained from the corresponding aryl iodide under the same conditions. The reaction proceeds under mild conditions, without excess reagents, and is fast and high-yielding. Together, the two presented routes give access to a wide range of HTIBs, which are useful reagents in a variety of synthetic transformations.

Ruthenium hydroxide supported on silica-coated magnetic nanoparticles was shown to be an efficient heterogeneous catalyst for the liquid-phase oxidation of a wide range of alcohols using molecular oxygen as a sole oxidant in the absence of co-catalysts or additives. The material was prepared through the loading of the amino modified support with ruthenium(III) ions from an aqueous solution of ruthenium(III) chloride followed by treatment with sodium hydroxide to form ruthenium hydroxide species. Characterizations suggest that ruthenium hydroxide is highly dispersed on the support surface, with no ruthenium containing crystalline phases being detected. Various carbonylic monoterpenoids important for fragrance and pharmaceutical industries can be obtained in good to excellent yields starting from biomass-based monoterpenic alcohols, such as isobomeol, perillyl alcohol, carveol, and citronellol. The catalyst undergoes no metal leaching and can be easily recovered by the application of an external magnet and re-used. (C) 2011 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The innate immune reaction to tissue injury is a natural process, which can have detrimental effects in the absence of negative feedbacks by glucocorticoids (GCs). Although acute lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge is relatively harmless to the brain parenchyma of adult animals, the endotoxin is highly neurotoxic in animals that are treated with the GC receptor antagonist RU486. This study investigated the role of cytokines of the gp130-related family in these effects, because they are essential components of the inflammatory process that provide survival signals to neurons. Intracerebral LPS injection stimulated expression of several members of this family of cytokines, but oncostatin M (Osm) was the unique ligand to be completely inhibited by the RU486 treatment. OSM receptor (Osmr) is expressed mainly in astrocytes and endothelial cells following LPS administration and GCs are directly responsible for its transcriptional activation in the presence of the endotoxin. In a mouse model of demyelination, exogenous OSM significantly modulated the expression of genes involved in the mobilization of oligodendrocyte precursor cells (OPCs), differentiation of oligodendrocyte, and production of myelin. In conclusion, the activation of OSM signaling is a mechanism activated by TLR4 in the presence of negative feedback by GCs on the innate immune system of the brain. OSM absence is associated with detrimental effects of LPS, whereas exogenous OSM favors repair response to demyelinated regions. (C) 2010 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

The Shwachman-Bodian-Diamond syndrome protein (SBDS) is a member of a highly conserved protein family of not well understood function, with putative orthologues found in different organisms ranging from Archaea, yeast and plants to vertebrate animals. The yeast orthologue of SBDS, Sdo1p, has been previously identified in association with the 60S ribosomal subunit and is proposed to participate in ribosomal recycling. Here we show that Sdo1p interacts with nucleolar rRNA processing factors and ribosomal proteins, indicating that it might bind the pre-60S complex and remain associated with it during processing and transport to the cytoplasm. Corroborating the protein interaction data, Sdo1p localizes to the nucleus and cytoplasm and co-immunoprecipitates precursors of 60S and 40S subunits, as well as the mature rRNAs. Sdo1p binds RNA directly, suggesting that it may associate with the ribosomal subunits also through RNA interaction. Copyright (C) 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Ni catalysts supported on gamma-Al(2)O(3) and Mg(Al)O were prepared with and without Rh as a promoter and tested in the reforming of methane in the presence of excess methane, simulating a model biogas. The effects of adding synthetic air on the methane conversion and the formation of carbon were assessed. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), surface area (BET), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) and XPD. The results showed that in catalysts without Rh, the Ni interacts strongly with the supports, showing high reduction temperatures in TPR tests. The addition of Rh increased the amount of reducible Ni and facilitated the reduction of the species interacting strongly with the support. In the catalytic tests, the samples promoted with Rh suffered higher carbon deposition. The in situ XPD suggested that on the support gamma-Al(2)O(3), the presence of Rh probably led to a segregation of Ni species with time on stream, leading to carbon deposition. On the support MgAlO, the presence of Rh improved the dispersion of Ni, by reducing the Ni(0) crystallite size, suggesting that in this case the carbon deposition was due to a favoring of CH(4) decomposition by Rh.
