Cytogenetic analysis of two local populations of microlepidogaster leucofrenatus showed a basic diploid chromosome number (2N) of 54 in both populations. Some fishes were found to have a 2N = 55 or 56 chromosomes due to the presence of one or two large heterochromatic B chromosomes. Specimens of M. leucofrenatus from the Poco Grande stream had 24 metacentrics, 24 submetacentrics, four subtelocentrics, and one submetacentric homomorphic pair in males and one submetacentric/subtelocentric heteromorphic pair in females, whereas individuals of this species from the Marumbi River had 22 metacentrics, 24 submetacentrics, four subtelocentrics, two acrocentrics, and one submetacentric/subtelocentric heteromorphic pair in females. The occurrence of the heteromorphic pair in the females was due to the presence of an extra C-banded segment on the W chromosome. Ag-NORs in both populations were located interstitially on the short arm of the largest metacentric pair. The Poco Grande population had less constitutive heterochromatin than did the Marumbi River population. The speciation process in this fish species is discussed on the basis of heterochromatin distribution.

The phylogenetic interrelationships of members of the Clostridium botulinum complex of species was investigated by direct sequencing of their 16S rRNA genes. Comparative analysis of the 16S rRNA sequences demonstrated the presence of four phylogenetically distinct lineages corresponding to: i) proteolytic C. botulinum types Al B, and F, and C. sporogenes, ii) saccharolytic types B, E and F, iii) types C and D and C. novyi type A, and iv) type G and C. subterminale. The phylogenetic groupings obtained from the 16S rRNA were in complete agreement with the four divisions recognised within the 'species complex' on the basis of phenotypic criteria.

Objective: To evaluate the influence of different cross-head speeds on shear bond strength test on the dentin surface. Methods: One hundred and twenty extracted bovine incisors were embedded in polystyrene resin. The specimens were prepared by wet grinding with 320-, 400- and 600-grit Al2O3 paper exposing dentin. After the application of the adhesive system Single Bond (3M) to etched dentin, the composite resin Z-100 (3M) was applied and light cured. The specimens were randomly assigned to four groups (n = 30). The shear bond strength tests were performed with an EMIC DL 500 universal testing machine at four different cross-head speeds: 0.50 (A); 0.75 (B); 1.00 (C); and 5.00 mm/min (D).Results: the mean values of shear bond strength in MPa (SD) were: A, 11.78 (3.91); B, 11.82 (4.78); C, 16.32 (6.45); D, 15.46 (5.94). The data were analyzed with one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (alpha = 0.05). The results indicated that A = B < C = D. The fracture pattern was evaluated by visual analysis in a stereomicroscope (25 x). The percentage of fractures that occurred at the adhesive interface were: A, 92.5%; B, 91.6%; C, 70.0%; D, 47.0%. The Student's t-test to percentages ( = 0.05) indicated that there were no significant differences among A, B and C; A and B differed from D, and there was no significant difference between C and D.Significance: Different cross-head speeds may influence the shear bond strength and the fracture pattern in dentin substrate. Shear bond strength using cross-head speeds of 0.50 and 0.75 mm/min should be preferred. (C) 2001 Academy of Dental Materials. published by Elsevier B.V. Ltd. All rights reserved.

Seselin, C14H12O3, is a coumarin which crystallizes in a monoclinic structure P2(1)/b(C-2h(5)) with four molecules per unit cell. In a Fourier-transform Raman spectroscopic study performed at room temperature, several normal modes were observed. Vibrational wavenumber and wave vector calculations using density functional theory were compared with experiment, which allowed the assignment of a number of normal modes of the crystal. Temperature-dependent Raman spectra were recorded between 10 and 300 K. No anomalies were observed in the phonon spectra, indicating that the monoclinic structure remains stable. Amorphous and crystalline powder of PLT phase was synthesized by using the Pechini method. Infrared (FTIR) analysis of the polymeric resin shows intense bands of organic materials from 250 to 1620 cm(-1). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectra of calcined powder at different temperatures show amorphous phase at 450 degrees C/3 h, semi-crystalline phase at 550 degrees C/3 h and a crystalline phase at 800 degrees C/3 h. Luminescence effect was observed in amorphous powder calcined from 300 to 350 degrees/3 h with broad absorption peaks in 579 nm at 300 degrees C/3 h and 603 rum at 350 degrees C/3 h, respectively. The photoluminescence effect is attributed to emissions of Ti -> 0 directly from the oxygen 2p orbital (valence band) to the titanate 3d orbital (conduction bands). (c) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. The BaMoO4 nanopowders were prepared by the Complex Polymerization Method (CPM). The structure properties of the BaMoO4 powders were characterized by FTIR transmittance spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectra, photoluminescence spectra (PL) and high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (HR-SEM). The XRD, FTIR and Raman data showed that BaMoO4 at 300 degrees C was disordered. At 400 degrees C and higher temperature, BaMoO4 crystalline scheelite-type phases could be identified, without the presence of additional phases, according to the XRD, FTIR and Raman data. The calculated average crystallite sizes, calculated by XRD, around 40 nm, showed the tendency to increase with the temperature. The crystallite sizes, obtained by HR-SEM, were around of 40-50 nm. The sample that presented the highest intensity of the red emission band was the one heat treated at 400 degrees C for 2 h, and the sample that displayed the 'highest intensity of the green emission band was the one heat treated at 700 degrees C for 2 h. The CPM was shown to be a low cost route for the production of BaMoO4 nanopowders, with the advantages of lower temperature, smaller time and reduced cost. The optical properties observed for BaMoO4 nanopowders suggested that this material is a highly promising candidate for photoluminescent applications. (C) 2005 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Anodic aluminium oxide (AAO) films exhibiting a homogeneous morphology of parallel pores perpendicular to the surface were prepared in a two-step anodization process and filled with copper by electrochemical deposition. The optimum growth conditions for the formation of freestanding AAO films with hexagonal compact array of cylindrical pores were studied by field emission scanning electron microscopy and small angle X-ray scattering. The results show well-defined periodic structures with uniform pores size distribution for films with pore diameters between 40 and 70 nm prepared using different voltages and temperatures during the second anodization step. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis of AAO films filled with copper show the formation of nanowires with high structural order, exhibiting a preferential crystalline orientation along the (2 2 0) axis and only small fraction of copper oxides. The best results for textured Cu nanowires were obtained at a reduction potential of -300 mV. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Kallikrein-kinin system exerts cardioprotective effects against pathological hypertrophy. These effects are modulated mainly via B(2) receptor activation. Chronic physical exercise can induce physiological cardiac hypertrophy characterized by normal organization of cardiac structure. Therefore, the aim of this work was to verify the influence of kinin B(2) receptor deletion on physiological hypertrophy to exercise stimulus. Animals were submitted to swimming practice for 5 min or for 60 min, 5 days a week, during 1 month and several cardiac parameters were evaluated. Results showed no significantly difference in heart weight between both groups, however an increased left ventricle weight and myocyte diameter were observed after the 60 min swimming protocol, which was more pronounced in B(2)(-/-) mice. In addition, sedentary B(2)(-/-) animals presented higher left ventricle mass when compared to wild-type (WT) mice. An increase in capillary density was observed in exercised animals, however the effect was less pronounced in B(2)(-/-) mice. Collagen, a marker of pathological hypertrophy, was increased in B(2)(-/-) mice submitted to swimming protocol, as well as left ventricular thickness, suggesting that these animals do not respond with physiological hypertrophy for this kind of exercise. In conclusion, our data suggest an important role for the kinin B(2) receptor in physiological cardiac hypertrophy. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study was to investigate human leucocyte antigen (HLA) genes in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and to analyse the possible role of these genes in the progression of chronic hepatitis C. One hundred and forty-five (145) Brazilian patients infected only with HCV genotype 1 were evaluated. HLA class I (A*, B*, C*) and class II (DRB1*, DQA1*, DQB1*) typing were carried out by PCR-SSO, through Luminex technology. Associations were found with protection against development of liver damage by both DRB1*11 (5.0% versus 18.2%, P = 0.0016, OR = 0.23, CI 95% = 0.090.58; Pc=0.0208) and DRB1*11-DQA1*05-DQB1*03 haplotype (4.2% versus 15.3%, P = 0.0032; OR = 0.24, CI 95% = 0.08-0.64). Liver damage was associated with HLA-C*04 in patients with <20 years of infection (38.4% versus 9.1%, P = 0.002, OR = 6.25, CI 95% = 1.9719.7; Pc=0.0238). It is concluded that HLA alleles can influence the development of liver damage in HCV type-1 chronically infected Brazilian patients.

We investigated the dielectric properties of pure and lanthanum modified bismuth titanate thin films obtained by the polymeric precursor method. X-ray diffraction of the film annealed at 300 degrees C for 2h indicates a disordered structure. Lanthanum addition increases gradually the dielectric permittivity of films, keeping unchanged their loss tangent. From C-V curve we can see no hysteresis behavior indicating the absence of domain structure. The decrease in the conductivity for the heavily doped Bi4Ti3O12 (BIT) must be associated to the unidentified crystal defects. For comparison, dielectric properties of crystalline BIT film were also investigated. (C) 2007 Published by Elsevier B.V.

We search for decays of Kaluza-Klein excitations of the graviton in the Randall-Sundrum model of extra dimensions to e+e- and in 1 fb-1 of pp collisions at s=1.96 TeV collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron. We set 95% confidence level upper limits on the production cross section times branching fraction, which translate into lower limits on the mass of the lightest excitation between 300 and 900 GeV for values of the coupling k/M Pl between 0.01 and 0.1. © 2008 The American Physical Society.

We present a search for direct CP violation in B±→J/ ψK±(π±) decays. The event sample is selected from 2.8fb-1 of pp̄ collisions recorded by D0 experiment in run II of the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. The charge asymmetry ACP(B+→J/ψK+)=+0.0075±0. 0061(stat)±0.0030(syst) is obtained using a sample of approximately 40000 B±→J/ψK± decays. The achieved precision is of the same level as the expected deviation predicted by some extensions of the standard model. We also measured the charge asymmetry ACP(B+→J/ψπ+)=-0. 09±0.08(stat)±0.03(syst). © 2008 The American Physical Society.
