Understanding and then designing efficient catalysts for CO oxidation at low temperature is one of the hottest topics in heterogeneous catalysis. Among the existing catalysts. Co3O4 is one of the most interesting systems: Morphology-controlled Co3O4 exhibits exceedingly high activity. In this study, by virtue of extensive density functional theory (OFT) calculations, the favored reaction mechanism in the system is identified. Through careful analyses on the energetics of elementary reactions on Co3O4(1 1 0)-A, Co3O4(1 1 0)-B, Co3O4(1 1 1) and Co3O4(1 0 0), which are the commonly exposed surfaces of Co3O4, we find the following regarding the relation between the activity and structure: (i) Co3+ is the active site rather than Co2+: and (ii) the three-coordinated surface oxygen bonded with three Co3+ may be slightly more reactive than the other two kinds of lattice oxygen, that is, the two-coordinated 0 bonded with one Co2+ and one Co3+ and the three-coordinated 0 bonded with one Co2+ and two Co3+. Following the results from Co3O4, we also extend the investigation to MnO2(1 1 0), Fe3O4(1 1 0), CuO(1 1 0) and CuO(1 1 1), which are the common metal oxide surfaces, aiming to understand the oxides in general. Three properties, such as the CO adsorption strength, the barrier of CO reacting with lattice 0 and the redox capacity, are identified to be the determining factors that can significantly affect the activity of oxides. Among these oxides, Co3O4 is found to be the most active one, stratifying all the three requirements. A new scheme to decompose barriers is introduced to understand the activity difference between lattice O-3c and O-2c on (1 1 0)-B surface. By utilizing the scheme, we demonstrate that the origin of activity variance lies in the geometric structures. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Reactivity of supported gold catalysts is a hot topic in catalysis for many years. This communication reports an investigation on the dissociation of molecular hydrogen at the perimeter sites of Au/TiO2 and the spillover of hydrogen atoms from the gold to the support using density functional theory calculations. It is found that the heterolytic dissociation is favoured in comparison with homolytic dissociation of molecular hydrogen at the perimeter sites. However, the surface oxygen of the rutile TiO2(110) surface at these sites can be readily passivated by the formed OH, suggesting that further dissociation of molecular hydrogen may occur at pure gold sites.

Partial hydrogenation of acrolein, the simplest alpha, beta-unsaturated aldehyde, is not only a model system to understand the selectivity in heterogeneous catalysis, but also technologically an important reaction. In this work, the reaction on Pt(211) and Au(211) surfaces is thoroughly investigated using density functional theory calculations. The formation routes of three partial hydrogenation products, namely propenol, propanal and enol, on both metals are studied. It is found that the pathway to produce enol is kinetically favoured on Pt while on Au the route of forming propenol is preferred. Our calculations also show that the propanal formation follows an indirect pathway on Pt(211). An energy decomposition method to analyze the barrier is utilized to understand the selectivities at Pt(211) and Au(211), which reveals that the interaction energies between the reactants involved in the transition states play a key role in determining the selectivity difference.

The crucial roles of the coverage of surface free sites in determining catalytic activity trend are quantitatively addressed with the help of density functional theory and microkinetics. First, by analyzing activity trends of NO oxidation catalyzed by Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir, and Pt surfaces with full kinetic considerations, we identify that the activity trend is in general determined by the competition between the reaction barrier and the coverage of surface free sites. Second, since the dissociation of many important molecules, such as the dissociation of N(2), O(2), and CO, follows the same Bronsted-Evans-Polanyi relationship, the coverage of surface free sites is usually a decisive term that affects the overall activity. Third, an equation is derived for the coverage of surface free sites and it is found that the coverage of surface free sites contains not only all the key thermodynamic parameters but also all the kinetic properties in the catalytic system. Reduced TiO2 (110) surfaces usually have OH groups as a result of H2O dissociation at oxygen vacancy defects. Because of excess electrons due to OH adsorption, OH/TiO2. exhibit interesting properties favorable to further O-2 or H2O adsorption. Both O-2 and H2O can adsorb and easily diffuse on the OH/TiO2 surface; such behavior plays a significant role in photocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, electronic devices and sensors. Indeed, the processes of H2O dissociation, O-2 and H2O diffusion on Such TiO2 surfaces, in the presence of OH groups, are important issues in their own right. Herein, the most recent experimental and theoretical progresses in understanding the interactions between adsorbed OH groups and O-2, or H2O, over TiO2 (110) surfaces and their implications will be reviewed. Structures and catalytic activities of Au thin films supported at anatase TiO(2)(101)) and a Au substrate are studied by using density functional theory calculations. The results show that O(2) can hardly adsorb at flat and stepped Au thin films, even supported by fully reduced TiO(2)(101) that can highly disperse Au atoms and offer strong electronic promotion. Interestingly, in both oxide-supported and pure Au. systems, wire-structured Au can adsorb both CO and O(2) rather strongly, and kinetic analysis suggests its high catalytic activity for low-temperature CO oxidation. The d-band center of Au at the catalytic site is determined to account for the unusual activity of the wire-structured film. A generalized structural model based on the wire-structured film is proposed for active Au, and possible support effects are discussed: Selected oxide surfaces can disperse Au atoms and stabilize the formation of a filmlike structure; they may also serve as a template for the preferential arrangement of Au atoms in a wire structure under low Au coverage.

We perform DFT calculations to investigate the redox and formate mechanisms of water-gas-shift (WGS) reaction on Au/CeO2 catalysts. In the redox mechanism, we analyze all the key elementary steps and find that the OH cleavage is the key step. Three possible pathways of OH cleavage are calculated: (1) OHad '' + *'--> H-ad' + O-ad"; (2) H-ad' + OHad '' --> H-2(g) + O-ad '' + *'; and (3) OHad" + OHad '' --> 2O(ad '') + H-2(g) (*': the free adsorption sites on the oxides; ad': adsorption on the metal; ad": adsorption on the oxide, respectively). In the formate mechanism, we identify all the possible pathways for the formation and decomposition of surface formates in the WGS reaction. It is found that there is a shortcoming in the redox and formate mechanisms which is related to surface oxygen reproduction. Four possible pathways for producing surface oxygen are studied, and all the barriers of the four pathways are more than 1 eV. Our results suggest that the processes to reproduce surface oxygen in the reaction circle are not kinetically easy. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Here, we demonstrate that quasi self-standing Au nanorod arrays prepared with plasma polymerisation deposited SiO2 dielectric spacers support surface enhanced fluorescence (SEF) while maintaining high signal reproducibility. We show that it is possible to find a balance between enhanced radiative and non-radiative decay rates at which the fluorescent intensity is maximized. The SEF signal optimised with a 30 nm spacer layer thickness showed a 3.5-fold enhancement with a signal variance of <15% thereby keeping the integrity of the nanorod array. We also demonstrate the decreased importance of obtaining resonance conditions when localized surface plasmon resonance is positioned within the spectral region of Au interband transitions. Procedures for further increasing the SEF enhancement factor are also discussed.

The use of biomass as a source of fuel is on the sharp increase. In parallel with this expansion, new chemical processes and technologies are required to improve efficiency, sustainability, and profitability.
Biocatalytic and chemocatalytic methods can be combined to affect the conversion of bio-alcohols, and convert them to valuable chemical targets in an atom efficient and environmentally benign manor. Fermentation offers a useful first step in biomass conversion, as whole cell biocatalysts can provide sustained activity when fed with crude biomass. Coupling this with homogeneous and/or heterogeneous catalysis enables the preparation of a diverse product range. The transition between biocatalytic and chemocatalytic steps can be assisted by utilising ionic liquids.
Ionic liquids have potential roles in biorefineries that generate alcohols; as an extractant, reaction medium, and catalytic reagent. Underpinning the potential of ionic liquids in this area is: 1. the ability of ionic liquids to solubilize polyols and alcohols; 2. the facility to functionalise ionic liquids and tune properties; 3. the low volatility of ionic liquids.
The FP7 project GRAIL will be highlighted; this project focusses on the utilisation of glycerol formed as a by-product in biodiesel synthesis.

A dual chamber membrane reactor was used in order to study the effect of macroscopically applied oxygen chemical potential differences to a platinum catalyst supported on a mixed oxygen ion and electronic conducting membrane. It is believed that the oxygen chemical potential difference imposed by the use of an oxygen sweep in one of the reactor chambers causes the back-spillover of oxygen species from the support onto the catalyst surface, resulting in the modification of the catalytic activity. The use of different sweep gases, such as ethylene and hydrogen was investigated as the means to reverse the rate modification by removing the spilt over species from the catalyst surface and returning the system to its initial state. Oxygen sweep in general had a positive effect on the reaction rate with rate increases up to 20% measured. Experimental results showed that hydrogen is a more potent sweep gas than ethylene in terms of the ability to reverse rate modification. A 10% rate loss was observed when using an ethylene sweep as compared with an almost 60% rate decrease when hydrogen was used as the sweep gas. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
