The objective of this work was to determine the effects of seed priming and sulfur application on cell membrane characteristics, seedling emergence, chlorophyll content and grain yield of soybean (Glycine max) in saline soil. A complete-block design in 4x3 factorial arrangement with three replicates was used to test four types of seed priming (water, auxin, gibberellin and non-priming) and three levels of sulfate availability (0, 70 and 140 kg ha-1 K2SO4). The soil had a silty loam texture with an electrical conductivity of 3.61 ds m-1, a pH of 8.2 and a saturation percentage of about 46%. Seed priming had significant effects on mean emergence rate (MER), emergence percentage, relative water content (RWC) of leaves, relative chlorophyll content, time of maturity, shoot length and grain yield. The highest values for these variables were observed in the priming treatments, except for the time of maturity. Sulfur application had significant effects on MER, shoot length, RWC, membrane injury index and grain yield. Priming treatments provide greater emergence rates and grain yields and interact sinergicaly with sulfur rates.

The objectives of this work were to identify parents resistant to Asian soybean rust using diallel crosses, obtain information on the genetic control of soybean resistance to the pathogen and verify whether the combining ability estimates interact with the environment (year or time of assessment). The F1 generation was obtained in a greenhouse from crosses between five contrasting parents for the trait resistance to soybean rust, in a complete diallel without reciprocals. Two rust-severity assessments were carried out on individual soybean plants of 25 treatments (parents and F2 and F3 populations) in 2006/2007 and 2007/2008, in an experimental field at Embrapa Soja, Londrina, PR, Brazil. Additive effects predominated in the genetic control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and the interaction of the segregant populations with the environment, although significant, did not alter the genetic parameter's general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability estimates, indicating that estimates obtained in one year and one assessment can be extrapolated to others. BR01-18437 inbred line is resistant to Asian rust and showed high GCA effects. This line should be used as parent if the objective is the resistance to Phakopsora pachyrhizi.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the efficiency of soybean (Glycine max) in intercepting and using solar radiation under natural field conditions, in the Amazon region, Brazil. The meteorological data and the values of soybean growth and leaf area were obtained from an agrometeorological experiment carried out in Paragominas, Pará state, during 2007 and 2008. The radiation use efficiency (RUE) was obtained from the ratio between the above-ground biomass production and the intercepted photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) accumulated to 99 and 95 days after sowing, in 2007 and 2008, respectively. Climatic conditions during the experiment were very distinct, with reduction in rainfall in 2007, which began during the soybean mid-cycle, due to the El Niño phenomenon. An important reduction in the leaf area index and biomass production was observed during 2007. Under natural field conditions in the Amazon region, the values of RUE were 1.46 and 1.99 g MJ-1 PAR in the 2007 and 2008 experiments, respectively. The probable reason for the differences found between these years might be associated to the water restriction in 2007 coupled with the higher air temperature and vapor pressure deficit, and also to the increase in the fraction of diffuse radiation that reached the land surface in 2008.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a adequação das estatÃsticas herdabilidade, coeficiente de determinação, valor do teste F para genótipo, Ãndice de diferenciação de Fasoulas e acurácia seletiva, como medidas do grau de precisão experimental em conjuntos de ensaios de competição de genótipos de feijão (Phaseolus vulgaris) e de soja (Glycine max). Foram usados os dados de produtividade de grãos de 72 e 216 ensaios de competição de genótipos de feijão e de soja, respectivamente, realizados no Estado do Rio Grande do Sul. Com base em 12 estatÃsticas, estimadas para cada ensaio, foram realizadas análises de correlação, de trilha e de agrupamento, e foi calculada a frequência de ensaios em cada classe de precisão experimental. As estatÃsticas acurácia seletiva, herdabilidade, coeficiente de determinação e valor do teste F para genótipo são mais adequadas do que o coeficiente de variação e a diferença mÃnima significativa pelo teste de Tukey, em percentagem da média, para se avaliar a precisão experimental, em ensaios de competição de genótipos de feijão e de soja. Por essas estatÃsticas, 88,89% dos ensaios de competição de genótipos de feijão e 75% dos ensaios de competição de genótipos de soja apresentaram precisão alta ou muito alta. Contudo, 2,78 e 10,19% dos ensaios de competição de genótipos de feijão e de soja, respectivamente, poderiam ser descartados, em razão da insuficiência na precisão experimental.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação entre a força de tração (FT) na haste sulcadora de adubo e o volume de solo mobilizado na linha de semeadura em função da quantidade de resÃduos, do tráfego de rodados de trator e da profundidade de sulcamento, e sua influência sobre a performance agronômica da soja. Os tratamentos englobaram seis doses de resÃduos culturais (DR), duas profundidades de trabalho das hastes sulcadoras (PT) e duas condições de tráfego - com e sem tráfego de rodados de trator -, em blocos ao acaso e parcelas subsubdivididas. Os tratamentos foram aplicados com e sem irrigação, em Argissolo Vermelho, sob plantio direto. As diferentes PT e condições de tráfego influenciaram significativamente a FT. Independentemente da condição de irrigação, as DR não influenciaram a produtividade de grãos e a massa seca da parte aérea da soja. Sem irrigação, a produtividade da soja aumentou em 180 kg ha-1 quando a PT passou de 0,064 para 0,10 m, o que demonstra que a aplicação do fertilizante a profundidades maiores é uma prática viável para diminuir os efeitos da seca sobre a cultura.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar os efeitos da aplicação do lodo produzido pela Companhia de Saneamento Ambiental do Distrito Federal (Caesb) na nodulação e rendimento de grãos da soja e em atributos biológicos de um Latossolo Vermelho de Cerrado. O experimento foi conduzido por dois anos consecutivos em um delineamento experimental de blocos ao acaso com três repetições e nove tratamentos - um controle, quatro doses de lodo de esgoto e quatro doses de fertilizante mineral - aplicados apenas no primeiro ano de cultivo. Foram avaliados: a nodulação e a produtividade da soja, o carbono da biomassa microbiana, o carbono prontamente mineralizável e a atividade das enzimas beta-glicosidase, fosfatase ácida e arilsulfatase no solo. Nos dois anos agrÃcolas, o rendimento de grãos da soja foi inferior ao do tratamento com o fertilizante mineral somente na dose de 1,5 Mg ha-1 de lodo de esgoto. A aplicação do lodo de esgoto no primeiro ano de cultivo não afetou a nodulação da soja, e a aplicação de até 6 Mg ha-1 não apresentou efeito sobre o carbono da biomassa microbiana, o carbono prontamente mineralizável e a atividade das enzimas beta-glicosidase, arilsulfatase e fosfatase ácida do solo no perÃodo de dois anos.

The objective of this work was to evaluate isoflavone concentrations in seeds of different Brazilian soybean cultivars grown in a range of locations and environmental conditions in Brazil. Seeds of 233 cultivars grown in Ponta Grossa, PR, Brazil, during the 2001/2002 soybean season, and of 22 cultivars sown in different locations of Brazilian Northeast, Southeast on South regions were analyzed for total isoflavones, including daidzin, glycitin, genistin and acetylgenistin. The total isoflavones ranged from 12 mg 100 g-1 (cv. Embrapa 48) to 461 mg 100 g-1 (cv. CS 305) among the 233 cultivars grown in Ponta Grossa, and the differences among them are due to genetic effects since all cultivars were grown and collected at the same locatation and year. This is an indication of the possibility of breeding for isoflavone content. Differences in isoflavone content observed in the cultivars grown in different locations permit the selection of locations for optimum isoflavone content (low or high), depending on the uses of soybean. In the Northeast region (5-8°S), higher concentrations of total isoflavones were observed at São Raimundo das Mangabeiras (232 mg 100 g-1) and Tasso Fragoso (284 mg 100 g-1) municipalities, and in the South (23-30°S), isoflavones were higher in Guarapuava, Canoinhas, Vacaria and Campos Novos municipalities, ranging from 130 to 409 mg 100 g-1.

The objective of this work was to identify the best selection strategies for the more promising parental combinations to obtain lines with good resistance to soybean Asian rust (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). Two experiments were carried out in the field during the 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 growing seasons, to determine the percentage of infected leaf area of individual plants of five parents and their segregant F2 and F3 populations. The data obtained indicates that additive genetic variance predominates in the control of soybean resistance to Asian rust, and that the year and time of assessment do not significantly influence the estimates of the genetic parameters obtained. The narrow-sense heritability (h²r) ranged from 23.12 to 55.83%, and indicates the possibility of successful selection of resistant individuals in the early generations of the breeding program. All the procedures used to select the most promising populations to generate superior inbred lines for resistance to P. pachyrhizi presented similar results and identified the BR01-18437 x BRS 232 population as the best for inbred line selection.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a expressão, por RT-qPCR, dos genes de nodulação nodC e nodW e do gene nopP da estirpe CPAC 15, que provavelmente atuam na infecção das raÃzes da soja. Foram realizados dois experimentos. No primeiro, a expressão dos genes foi avaliada nas células após a incubação com genisteÃna por 15 min, 1, 4 e 8 horas. Os resultados revelaram que os três genes apresentaram maior expressão imediatamente após o contato com o indutor (15 min). No segundo experimento, a bactéria foi cultivada na presença de indutores (genisteÃna ou exsudatos de sementes de soja) por 48 horas. A expressão dos três genes foi maior na presença de genisteÃna, com valores de expressão para nodC, nodW e nopP superiores ao controle. Os resultados obtidos confirmam a funcionalidade dos três genes na estirpe CPAC 15, com ênfase para o nopP, cuja funcionalidade em Bradyrhizobium japonicum foi descrita pela primeira vez.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the application of the spectral-temporal response surface (STRS) classification method on Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS, 250 m) sensor images in order to estimate soybean areas in Mato Grosso state, Brazil. The classification was carried out using the maximum likelihood algorithm (MLA) adapted to the STRS method. Thirty segments of 30x30 km were chosen along the main agricultural regions of Mato Grosso state, using data from the summer season of 2005/2006 (from October to March), and were mapped based on fieldwork data, TM/Landsat-5 and CCD/CBERS-2 images. Five thematic classes were considered: Soybean, Forest, Cerrado, Pasture and Bare Soil. The classification by the STRS method was done over an area intersected with a subset of 30x30-km segments. In regions with soybean predominance, STRS classification overestimated in 21.31% of the reference values. In regions where soybean fields were less prevalent, the classifier overestimated 132.37% in the acreage of the reference. The overall classification accuracy was 80%. MODIS sensor images and the STRS algorithm showed to be promising for the classification of soybean areas in regions with the predominance of large farms. However, the results for fragmented areas and smaller farms were less efficient, overestimating soybean areas.
Produtividade de culturas e resistência à penetração de Argissolo Vermelho sob diferentes manejos

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a relação entre parâmetros de plantas de soja e feijão e a resistência do solo à penetração de Argissolo Vermelho distrófico arênico sob semeadura direta e convencional. Em experimento implantado em 1989 em semeadura direta, foram aplicadas diferentes passadas de máquina de 10 Mg e realizados diferentes preparos do solo em delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Foram quantificados o Ãndice de velocidade de emergência, o Ãndice de área foliar, a altura e a produtividade de grãos de soja e de feijão e a resistência do solo à penetração. O Ãndice de área foliar, a altura e a produtividade do feijão são influenciados pela resistência do solo à penetração em 46, 51 e 59%, respectivamente, enquanto 55% da variação da altura da soja é explicada pela resistência à penetração. Indica-se um valor crÃtico de resistência à penetração de aproximadamente 1,7 e 1,9 MPa no que se refere ao crescimento e à produtividade de grãos de feijão e de soja, respectivamente.

The objective of this work was to establish a life table for the immature stages of Epinotia aporema, as part of a wider investigation on its biological control. Insects were reared on an artificial diet at 25±1ºC and a 16:8 (light:dark) hour photoperiod. For the identification of larval instars for the study of pathogen-insect interactions under laboratory conditions, head capsule widths (HCWs) were also determined. The egg incubation period was 4.13±0.30 days, larval stage took 11.64±0.49 days, and the development time of the pupal phase was sex-dependent with 8.51±0.69 days for the females and 9.41±0.65 days for the males. Five larval instars were identified.

The objectives of this work were to investigate the genetic variation in 79 soybean (Glycine max) accessions from different regions of the world, to cluster the accessions based on their similarity, and to test the correlation between the two types of markers used. Simple sequence repeat markers present in genomic (SSR) and in expressed regions (EST-SSR) were used. Thirty SSR primer-pairs were selected (20 genomic and 10 EST-SSR) based on their distribution on the 20 genetic linkage groups of soybean, on their trinucleotide repetition unit and on their polymorphism information content. All analyzed loci were polymorphic, and 259 alleles were found. The number of alleles per locus varied from 2-21, with an average of 8.63. The accessions exhibit a significant number of rare alleles, with genotypes 19, 35, 63 and 65 carrying the greater number of exclusive alleles. Accessions 75 and 79 were the most similar and accessions 31 and 35, and 40 and 78, were the most divergent ones. A low correlation between SSR and EST-SSR data was observed, thus genomic and expressed microsatellite markers are required for an appropriate analysis of genetic diversity in soybean. The genetic diversity observed was high and allowed the formation of five groups and several subgroups. A moderate relationship between genetic divergence and geographic origin of accessions was observed.

The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of moisture and temperature on the development of Sclerotium rolfsii on soybean, corn, and wheat straw. Wheat straw produced the lowest number of sclerotia. Intermediate soil moisture level (70% of field capacity), and temperatures ranging between 25-30ºC favored sclerotia development. No sclerotia were formed at temperatures between 30-35ºC, on any type of straw.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar o efeito da inoculação de Bradyrhizobium em pré-semeadura de soja e o efeito do tratamento das sementes com fungicidas na nodulação. Foram usados controles sem inoculação, que receberam ou não a aplicação de 200 kg ha-1 de N. A inoculação em pré-semeadura mostrou desempenho igual à inoculação padrão quanto à nodulação, produção de matéria seca, produtividade de grãos e acúmulo de nitrogênio nos tecidos e grãos da soja. Entretanto, quando as sementes foram tratadas com fungicidas, houve redução da nodulação e da produtividade.
