In this work, the oxidizing action of a native strain type A. ferrooxidans on a sulphide containing a predominance of arsenopyrite and pyrite has been evaluated. Incubation of the A. ferrooxidans strain in flasks containing 200 mL of T&K medium with the ore (particle size of 106 mu m) at pulp density 8% (w/v) at 35 degrees C on a rotary shaker at 200 rpm resulted in preferential oxidation of the arsenopyrite and the mobilization of 88% of the arsenic in 25 days. Mineralogical characterization of the residue after biooxidation was carried out with FTIR. XRD and SEM/XEDS techniques. An in situ oxidation of the arsenopyrite is suggested on the basis of the frequent appearance of jarosite pseudomorph replacing arsenopyrite, in which the transformations Fe(2+) -> Fe(3+), S(-2) -> S(+6) and As(-1) -> As(+3) -> As(+5) occur for the most part without formation of soluble intermediates, resulting in a type of jarosite that typically contains high concentrations of arsenic (type A-jarosite). However, during pyrite oxidation, dissolution of the constituent Fe and S predominates, which is evidenced by corrosion of pyrite particles with formation of pits, generating a type of jarosite with high quantities of K (type B-jarosite). Lastly, a third type of jarosite (type C-jarosite) also precipitated forming a thin film that covered the grains of pyrite principally. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
Swimming training exacerbates pathological cardiac hypertrophy in kinin B(2) receptor-deficient mice

Kallikrein-kinin system exerts cardioprotective effects against pathological hypertrophy. These effects are modulated mainly via B(2) receptor activation. Chronic physical exercise can induce physiological cardiac hypertrophy characterized by normal organization of cardiac structure. Therefore, the aim of this work was to verify the influence of kinin B(2) receptor deletion on physiological hypertrophy to exercise stimulus. Animals were submitted to swimming practice for 5 min or for 60 min, 5 days a week, during 1 month and several cardiac parameters were evaluated. Results showed no significantly difference in heart weight between both groups, however an increased left ventricle weight and myocyte diameter were observed after the 60 min swimming protocol, which was more pronounced in B(2)(-/-) mice. In addition, sedentary B(2)(-/-) animals presented higher left ventricle mass when compared to wild-type (WT) mice. An increase in capillary density was observed in exercised animals, however the effect was less pronounced in B(2)(-/-) mice. Collagen, a marker of pathological hypertrophy, was increased in B(2)(-/-) mice submitted to swimming protocol, as well as left ventricular thickness, suggesting that these animals do not respond with physiological hypertrophy for this kind of exercise. In conclusion, our data suggest an important role for the kinin B(2) receptor in physiological cardiac hypertrophy. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Silicon-based polymers and oxides may be formed when vapours of oxygen-containing organosilicone compounds are exposed to energetic electrons drawn from a hot filament by a bias potential applied to a second electrode in a controlled atmosphere in a vacuum chamber. As little deposition occurs in the absence of the bias potential, electron impact fragmentation is the key mechanism in film fabrication using electron-emission enhanced chemical vapour deposition (EEECVD). The feasibility of depositing amorphous hydrogenated carbon films also containing silicon from plasmas of tetramethylsilane or hexamethyldisiloxane has already been shown. In this work, we report the deposition of diverse films from plasmas of tetraethoxysilane (TEOS)-argon mixtures and the characterization of the materials obtained. The effects of changes in the substrate holder bias (Vs) and of the proportion of TEOS in the mixture (XT) on the chemical structure of the films are examined by infrared-reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS) at near-normal and oblique incidence using unpolarised and p-polarised, light, respectively. The latter is particularly useful in detecting vibrational modes not observed when using conventional near-normal incidence. Elemental analyses of the film were carried out by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), which was also useful in complementary structural investigations. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of caloric restriction (CR) on myenteric neurons in the duodenum of Wistar rats during aging. Thirty rats were divided into three groups: the C group (six-month-old animals that were fed a normal diet from weaning until six months of age), the SR group (18-month-old animals that were fed a normal diet from weaning until 18 months of age) and the CR group (18-month-old animals that were fed a 30% CR diet after six months of age). After 12 months, the animals were euthanized. Whole-mount preparations of the duodenums were either stained with Giemsa or underwent NADPH-diaphorase histochemistry to determine the general myenteric neuron population and the nitrergic neuron subpopulation (NADPH-d +), respectively. The NADPH-d-negative (NADPH-d -) neuron population was estimated based on the difference between the Giemsa-stained and NADPH-d + neurons. The neurons were counted, and the cell body areas were measured. Aging was associated with neuronal loss in the SR group, which was minimized by caloric restriction in the CR group. The density (mm(2)) of the Giemsa-stained neurons was higher in the SR group (79.09 +/- 6.25) than in the CR (92.37 +/- 11.6) and C (111.68 +/- 15.26) groups. The density of the NADPH-d + neurons was higher in the SR group (44.90 +/- 5.88) than in the C (35.75 +/- 1.6) and RC (39.14 +/- 7.02) groups. The density of NADPH-d - neurons was higher in the CR (49.73 +/- 12.08) and C (75.64 +/- 17.05) groups than in the SR group (33.82 +/- 4.5). In the C group, 32% and 68% of the Giemsa-stained myenteric neurons were NADPH-d + or NADPH-d -, respectively. With aging (SR group), the percentage of nitrergic neurons (56.77%) increased, whereas the percentage of NADPH-d - neurons (43.22%) decreased. In the CR group, the change in the percentage of nitrergic (42.37%) and NADPH-d - (57.62%) neurons was lower. As NADPH-d - neurons will be mostly cholinergic neurons, CR appears to reduce the loss of cholinergic neurons during aging. The cell body dimensions (mu m(2)) were not altered by aging or CR. Thus. An outbreak of botulism was detected in goats in the semiarid region of Brazil. In a flock of 460 goats, 38 does were affected and 37 died. Kids and younger goats were not affected. The main clinical signs were flaccid tetraparesis leading to tetraplegia that was often accompanied by twisted neck, tongue paralysis, and muscle tremors. At the time of the visit, 4 out of 11 affected goats were recumbent. Ambulatory goats had uncoordinated and swaying gaits with hypometria and weakness, mainly of the hind limbs. Two recumbent and four ambulatory goats showed twisted neck. Two recumbent goats were euthanized and necropsied. Non-significant gross and histologic lesions were observed. Samples of the liver, gut and rumen content were collected from the two goats and examined for botulinum toxins using the mouse serum neutralization test. The three samples from one goat were positive for type C toxin. Marked osteophagia was observed when the goats had access to bones in the pasture, and the farmer mentioned that osteophagia was common among goats of the flock. A sample of the plant Hybantus ipecaconha, the most abundant forage available for the goats, contained 2800 mg/kg of Ca and 450 mg/kg of P. One soil sample contained 58.12 mg/kg of Ca and 2.02 mg/kg of P. It was concluded that in this outbreak, botulism was associated with osteophagia probably due to phosphorus deficiency. Tin oxide (SnO) powders were obtained by the microwave-assisted hydrothermal synthesis technique using SnCl2 center dot 2H(2)O as a precursor. By changing the hydrothermal processing time, temperature, the type of mineralizing agent (NaOH, KOH or NH4 OH) and its concentration, SnO crystals having different sizes and morphologies could be achieved. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (X-ray), Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM), High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) and Selected Area Electron Diffraction (SAED). The results showed that plate-like form is the characteristic morphology of growth and the TEM analyses indicate the growth direction as (200). (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

In the search for new therapeutic tools against tuberculosis two novel iron complexes, [Fe(L-H)3], with 3-aminoquinoxaline-2-carbonitrile N(1),N(4)-dioxide derivatives (L) as ligands, were synthesized, characterized by a combination of techniques, and in vitro evaluated. Results were compared with those previously reported for two analogous iron complexes of other ligands of the same family of quinoxaline derivatives. In addition, the complexes were studied by cyclic voltammetry and EPR spectroscopy. Cyclic voltammograms of the iron compounds showed several cathodic processes which were attributed to the reduction of the metal center (Fe(III)/Fe(II)) and the coordinated ligand. EPR signals were characteristic of magnetically isolated high-spin Fe(III) in a rhombic environment and arise from transitions between m(s) = +/- 1/2 (geff-9) or m(s) = +/- 3/2 (g(eff)similar to 4.3) states. Mossbauer experiments showed hyperfine parameters that are typical of high-spin Fe(III) ions in a not too distorted environment. The novel complexes showed in vitro growth inhibitory activity on Mycobacterium tuberculosis H(37)Rv (ATCC 27294), together with very low unspecific cytotoxicity on eukaryotic cells (cultured murine cell line J774). Both complexes showed higher inhibitory effects on M. tuberculosis than the "second-line" therapeutic drugs. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
