AIN/CrN multilayer hard coatings with various bilayer thicknesses were fabricated by a reactive sputtering process. The microstructural and mechanical characterizations of multilayer coatings were investigated through transmission electron microscope (TEM) observations and the hardness measurements by nano indentation. In particular, the variation of chemical bonding states of the bilayer nitrides was elucidated by near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy. Many broken nitrogen bonds were formed by decreasing the bilayer thickness of AIN/CrN multilayer coatings. Existence of optimum AIN/CrN multilayer coatings thickness for maximum hardness could be explained by the competition of softening by the formation of broken nitrogen bonds and strengthening induced by decreasing bilayer thickness.

ZnO/Si heterojunctions were fabricated by growing ZnO thin films on p-type Si (100) substrate by pulsed laser deposition without buffer layers. The crystallinity of the heterojunction was analyzed by high resolution X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The optical quality of the film was analyzed by room temperature (RT) photoluminescence measurements. The high intense band to band emission confirmed the high quality of the ZnO thin films on Si. The electrical properties of the junction were studied by temperature dependent current-voltage measurements and RT capacitance-voltage (C-V) analysis. The charge carrier concentration and the barrier height (BH) were calculated, to be 5.6x10(19) cm(-3) and 0.6 eV respectively from the C-V plot. The BH and ideality factor, calculated using the thermionic emission (TE) model, were found to be highly temperature dependent. We observed a much lower value in Richardson constant, 5.19x10(-7)A/cm(2) K-2 than the theoretical value (32 A/cm(2) K-2) for ZnO. This analysis revealed the existence of a Gaussian distribution (GD) with a standard deviation of sigma(2)=0.035 V. By implementing the GD to the TE, the values of BH and Richardson constant were obtained as 1.3 eV and 39.97 A/cm(2) K-2 respectively from the modified Richardson plot. The obtained Richardson constant value is close to the theoretical value for n-ZnO. These high quality heterojunctions can be used for solar cell applications. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Three-dimensional numerical study of natural convection in a vertical channel with flush-mounted discrete heaters on opposite conductive substrate walls is carried out in the present work. Detailed flow and heat transfer characteristics are presented for various Grashof numbers. The heat transfer effects on one wall by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall is examined. It is found that heat transfer rates on one wall are increased by the presence of heaters on its opposite wall. The thermal boundary layers on the opposite walls complement each other for enhanced heat transfer. The effects of spacing between the heated walls, spacings between heaters and substrate conductivity on flow and heat transfer are examined. Existence of optimum spacings between the heated walls for maximum heat transfer and mass flow are observed. It is found that the heat transfer and fluid flow do not follow the same optimum spacings. Mass flow rate reaches maximum value at a wall spacing greater than the spacing for maximum heat transfer. This is because the interaction of thermal boundary layers on individual walls ceases at a lower spacing before the velocity boundary layers separate each other. It is found that increased spacings between heaters reduce individual heater temperatures provided the heaters close to exit on both substrates avail sufficient substrate potions on the exit side. Insufficient substrate portions between the exit heaters and the exit cause abnormal local temperature rise in the exit heaters which are the hottest ones among all the heaters. Optimal heater spacings exist for minimum hottest heater temperature rise. Correlations are presented for dimensionless mass flow rate, temperature maximum, and average Nusselt number.

A facile method of solution combustion was used to synthesize a new solid solution Bi2Ce2O7. The structure was determined from powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and found to crystallize in the space group Fm (3) over barm with cell parameter a = 5.46936(9) angstrom. The particle sizes varied from 5 to 6 nm. The degradation of cationic dye malachite green (MG) was investigated under solar radiation as the band gap of the material is 2.34 eV.

This paper presents the thermal vibration analysis of orthotropic nanoplates such as graphene, using the two variable refined plate theory and nonlocal continuum mechanics for small scale effects. The nanoplate is modeled based on two variable refined plate theory and the axial stress caused by the thermal effects is also considered. The two variable refined plate theory takes account of transverse shear effects and parabolic distribution of the transverse shear strains through the thickness of the plate, hence it is unnecessary to use shear correction factors. Nonlocal governing equations of motion for the nanoplate are derived from the principle of virtual displacements. The closed form solution for thermal-vibration frequencies of a simply supported rectangular nanoplate has been obtained by using Navier's method of solution. Numerical results obtained by the present theory are compared with available solutions in the literature and the molecular dynamics results. The influences of the small scale coefficient, the room or low temperature, the high temparature, the half wave number and the aspect ratio of nanoplate on the natural frequencies are considered and discussed in detail. It can be concluded that the present theory, which does not require shear correction factor, is not only simple but also comparable to the first-order and higher order shear deformation theory. The present analysis results can be used for the design of the next generation of nanodevices that make use of the thermal vibration properties of the nanoplates. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. In this report, the currentvoltage (IV) characteristics of Au/GaN Schottky diodes have been carried out in the temperature range of 300510?K. The estimated values of the Schottky-barrier height (SBH) and the ideality factor of the diodes based on the thermionic emission (TE) mechanism were found to be temperature dependent. The barrier height was found to increase and the ideality factor to decrease with increasing temperature. The conventional Richardson plot of ln(Is/T2) versus 1/kT gives the SBH of 0.51?eV and Richardson constant value of 3.23?X?10-5?A?cm-2?K-2 which is much lower than the known value of 26.4?A?cm-2?K-2 for GaN. Such discrepancies of the SBH and Richardson constant value were attributed to the existence of barrier-height inhomogeneities at the Au/GaN interface. The modified Richardson plot of ln(Is/T2)q2 sigma 2/2k2T2 versus q/kT, by assuming a Gaussian distribution of barrier heights at the Au/GaN interface, provided the SBH of 1.47?eV and Richardson constant value of 38.8?A?cm-2?K-2. The temperature dependence of the barrier height is interpreted on the basis of existence of the Gaussian distribution of the barrier heights due to the barrier-height inhomogeneities at the Au/GaN interface.

We study the nature of quiet-Sun oscillations using multi-wavelength observations from TRACE, Hinode, and SOHO. The aim is to investigate the existence of propagating waves in the solar chromosphere and the transition region by analyzing the statistical distribution of power in different locations, e.g. in bright magnetic (network), bright non-magnetic and dark non-magnetic (inter-network) regions, separately. We use Fourier power and phase-difference techniques combined with a wavelet analysis. Two-dimensional Fourier power maps were constructed in the period bands 2 -aEuro parts per thousand 4 minutes, 4 -aEuro parts per thousand 6 minutes, 6 -aEuro parts per thousand 15 minutes, and beyond 15 minutes. We detect the presence of long-period oscillations with periods between 15 and 30 minutes in bright magnetic regions. These oscillations were detected from the chromosphere to the transition region. The Fourier power maps show that short-period powers are mainly concentrated in dark regions whereas long-period powers are concentrated in bright magnetic regions. This is the first report of long-period waves in quiet-Sun network regions. We suggest that the observed propagating oscillations are due to magnetoacoustic waves, which can be important for the heating of the solar atmosphere.

We report low-dimensional fabrication of technologically important giant dielectric material CaCu3Ti4O12 (CCTO) using soft electron beam lithographic technique. Sol-gel precursor solution of CCTO was prepared using inorganic metal nitrates and Ti-isopropoxide. Employing the prepared precursor solution and e-beam lithographically fabricated resist mask CCTO dots with similar to 200 nm characteristic dimension were fabricated on platinized Si (111) substrate. Phase formation, chemical purity and crystalline nature of fabricated low dimensional structures were investigated with X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and selected area electron diffraction (SAED), respectively. Morphological investigations were carried out with the help of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). This kind of solution based fabrication of patterned low-dimensional high dielectric architectures might get potential significance for cost-effective technological applications. Nano-indentation studies have been undertaken on bulk Ge15Te85-xSix glasses (0 <= x <= 9), to estimate hardness, H and elastic modulus, E. It is found that E and H increase initially with the increase in the atomic percent of Si. Further, a plateau is seen in the composition dependence of E and H in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6. It is also seen that the addition of up to 2 at% Si increases the density rho of the glass considerably; however, further additions of Si lead to a near linear reduction in rho, in the range 2 <= x <= 6. Beyond x=6, rho increases again with Si content. The variation of molar volume V-m brings out a more fascinating picture. A plateau is seen in the intermediate phase suggesting that the molecular structure of the glasses is adapting to keep the count of constraints fixed in this particular phase. The observed variations in mechanical properties are associated with the Boolchand's intermediate phase in the present glassy system, in the composition range 2 <= x <= 6, suggested earlier from calorimetric and electrical switching studies. The present results reveal rather directly the existence of the intermediate phase in elastic and plastic properties of chalcogenide glasses. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Motivated by the idea of designing a structure for a desired mode shape, intended towards applications such as resonant sensors, actuators and vibration confinement, we present the inverse mode shape problem for bars, beams and plates in this work. The objective is to determine the cross-sectional profile of these structures, given a mode shape, boundary condition and the mass. The contribution of this article is twofold: (i) A numerical method to solve this problem when a valid mode shape is provided in the finite element framework for both linear and nonlinear versions of the problem. (ii) An analytical result to prove the uniqueness and existence of the solution in the case of bars. This article also highlights a very important question of the validity of a mode shape for any structure of given boundary conditions.

Classical literature on solid mechanics claims existence of radial deformation due to torsion but there is hardly any literature on analytic solutions capturing this phenomenon. This paper tries to solve this problem in an asymptotic sense using the variational asymptotic method (VAM). The method makes no ad hoc assumptions and hence asymptotic correctness is assured. The VAM splits the 3D elasticity problem into two parts: A 1D problem along the length of the cylinder which gives the twist and a 2D cross-sectional problem which gives the radial deformation. This enables closed form solutions, even for some complex problems. Starting with a hollow cylinder, made up of orthotropic but transversely isotropic material, the 3D problem has been formulated and solved analytically despite the presence of geometric nonlinearity. The general results have been specialized for particularly useful cases, such as solid cylinders and/or cylinders with isotropic material. DOI: 10.1115/1.4006803]

This paper extends some geometric properties of a one-parameter family of relative entropies. These arise as redundancies when cumulants of compressed lengths are considered instead of expected compressed lengths. These parametric relative entropies are a generalization of the Kullback-Leibler divergence. They satisfy the Pythagorean property and behave like squared distances. This property, which was known for finite alphabet spaces, is now extended for general measure spaces. Existence of projections onto convex and certain closed sets is also established. Our results may have applications in the Rényi entropy maximization rule of statistical physics.

The role of a computer emerged from modeling and analyzing concepts (ideas) to generate concepts. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis had attracted much attention in the past decades. To find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices, ten experimental studies were conducted. Observations from these empirical studies would be used as the basis to develop knowledge involved in the multi-state design synthesis process. In this paper, we propose a computational representation for expressing the multi-state design task and for enumerating multi-state behaviors of kinematic pairs and mechanisms. This computational representation would be used to formulate computational methods for the synthesis process to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices by generating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

Automated synthesis of mechanical designs is an important step towards the development of an intelligent CAD system. Research into methods for supporting conceptual design using automated synthesis has attracted much attention in the past decades. In our research, ten experimental studies are conducted to find out how designers synthesize solution concepts for multi-state mechanical devices. The designers are asked to think aloud, while carrying out the synthesis. These design synthesis processes are video recorded. It has been found that modification of kinematic pairs and mechanisms is the major activity carried out by all the designers. This paper presents an analysis of these synthesis processes using configuration space and topology graph to identify and classify the types of modifications that take place. Understanding of these modification processes and the context in which they happened is crucial to develop a system for supporting design synthesis of multiple state mechanical devices that is capable of creating a comprehensive variety of solution alternatives.

The assembly of aerospace and automotive structures in recent years is increasingly carried out using adhesives. Adhesive joints have advantages of uniform stress distribution and less stress concentration in the bonded region. Nevertheless, they may suffer due to the presence of defects in bond line and at the interface or due to improper curing process. While defects like voids, cracks and delaminations present in the adhesive bond line may be detected using different NDE methods, interfacial defects in the form of kissing bond may go undetected. Attempts using advanced ultrasonic methods like nonlinear ultrasound and guided wave inspection to detect kissing bond have met with limited success stressing the need for alternate methods. This paper concerns the preliminary studies carried out on detectability of dry contact kissing bonds in adhesive joints using the Digital Image Correlation (DIC) technique. In this attempt, adhesive joint samples containing varied area of kissing bond were prepared using the glass fiber reinforced composite (GFRP) as substrates and epoxy resin as the adhesive layer joining them. The samples were also subjected to conventional and high power ultrasonic inspection. Further, these samples were loaded till failure to determine the bond strength during which digital images were recorded and analyzed using the DIC method. This noncontact method could indicate the existence of kissing bonds at less than 50% failure load. Finite element studies carried out showed a similar trend. Results obtained from these preliminary studies are encouraging and further tests need to be done on a larger set of samples to study experimental uncertainties and scatter associated with the method.
