Mealiness is a negative attribute of sensory texture, characterised by the lack of juiciness decrease in the total amount of of water content of tissues. Peach mealy textures are known as \ and leatheriness. Besides the lack of juiciness and flavour, that characterises mealy fruits, in associated with internal browning near the stone and an incapacity of ripening although there i ripe appearance. It is considered as a physiological disorder that appears in stone fruits probably < unbalanced pectolitic enzyme activity during storage. Since January 1996, a wide EC Project entitled: "Mealiness in fruits. Consumer perception and i detection" is being carried out. Within it, the Physical Properties Laboratory (ETSIA-UPM) working to develop instrumental procedures to detect mealiness in different types of fruits (s contributions by Barreiro to AgEng). The results obtained have shown to correlate well with \ measurements in apples (Barreiro et al), also we have succeeded in identifying individual mealy j the basis of instrumental measurement in peaches. The definition of these texture categories will be used in further studies as a base for new individual classification.

The consumption of melon (Cucumis melo L.) has been, until several years ago, regional, seasonal and without commercial interest. Recent commercial changes and world wide transportation have changed this situation. Melons from 3 different ripeness stages at harvest and 7 cold storage periods have been analysed by destructive and non destructive tests. Chemical, physical, mechanical (non destructive impact, compression, skin puncture and Magness- Taylor) and sensory tests were carried out in order to select the best test to assess quality and to determine the optimal ripeness stage at harvest. Analysis of variance and Principal Component Analysis were performed to study the data. The mechanical properties based on non-destructive Impact and Compression can be used to monitor cold storage evolution. They can also be used at harvest to segregate the highest ripeness stage (41 days after anthesis DAA) in relation to less ripe stages (34 and 28 DAA).Only 34 and 41 DAA reach a sensory evaluation above 50 in a scale from 0-100.

Since Januarv 1946 a wade EC Project entitled "Mealiness in fruits Consumers perception and means for detection is being carried out. Mealiness is a sensory attribute that cannot be defined by a single parameter but through a combination of variables (multidimensional structure) Previous studies propose the definition of mealiness as the lack of crispiness of hardness and of juiciness. A destructive instrumental procedure combined with a integration technique has been already developed enabling to identify mealy fruits by destructive instrumental means use other contributions of Barreiro and Ortiz to this Ag Eng 98. Current aims .are focused on establishing non destructive tests for mealiness assessment. Magnetic resonance Imaging (MRI) makes use of the magnetic properties that some atomic nuclei have. especially hidrogen nuclei from water molecules to obtain high quality images in the field of internal quality evaluation the MRI has been used to assess internal injury due to conservation as o treatments as chilling injury un Persimmons Clark&Forbes (1994) and water-core in apples (Wang et al. 1998. In the case of persimmons the chilling injury is described as an initial tissue breakdown and lack of cohesion between cells followed by formation of a firm gel and by a lack of juiciness without changes in the total amount ol water content. Also a browning of the flesh is indicated (Clark&Forhes 1994). This definition fits into the previous description of mealiness.

Characteristics of the impacts suffered by the fruit on a transfer point of an experimental fruit packing line were analysed. The transfer is made up by two transporting belts at different heights forming an angle of 90°. These transfer points are very common in fruit packing lines, in which fruits receive two impacts: the first onto the belt base and the second into the lateral plate. Different tests were earned out to study the effect of transfer height, velocity, belt structure and padding on tire acceleration values recorded by an instrumental sphere (IS 100). Results showed that transfer height and belt structure affect mainly impact values on the belt base, and padding affects mainly impact values registered in lateral impact. The effect of belt velocity in both impacts is less important when compared to the rest of the variables. Additionally, two powered transfer decelerators were tested at the same point with the aim of decreasing impacts suffered by the fruit. Comparing impacts registered using these decelerators to those analysed in the first part of the study without decelerators a high reduction of the impact values was observed.

Padding materials are commonly used in fruit packing lines with the objective of diminishing impact damage in postharvest handling. Two sensors, instrumented sphere IS 100 and impact tester, have been compared to analyze the performance of six different padding materials used in Spanish fruit packing lines. Padding materials tested have been classified according to their capability to decrease impact intensities inflicted to fruit in packing lines. A procedure to test padding materials has been developed for "Golden" apples. Its basis is a logistic regression to predict bruise probability in fruit. The model combines two kinds of parameters: padding material parameters measured with IS, and fruit properties.

Woolliness (mealiness in other fruits) is a negative attribute of peach sensory texture that is a physiological disorder associated with inadequate cold storage. It is characterised by lack of crispness and juiciness without variation in the tissue water content (Harker and Hallet, 1992). Many attempts have been made to develop destructive instrumental procedures to detect mealiness and woolliness. Non-destructive procedures attempted include using nuclear magnetic resonance (Sonego et al., 1995). However, this technique has economical limitations and is not practical at present. Non-destructive impact tests and NIR are non-destructive techniques which have been used to assess internal characteristics of fruits (Chen and Sun, 1991). The objective of this study was to develop a novel non-destructive procedure to identify woolly peaches by combining impact and NIR approaches.

Non-destructive measurement of fruit quality has been an important objective through recent years (Abbott, 1999). Near infrared spectroscopy (NIR) is applicable to the cuantification of chemicals in foods and NIK "laser spectroscopy" can be used to estimate the firmness of fruits. However, die main limitation of current optical techniques that measure light transmission is that they do not account for the coupling between absorption and scattering inside the tissue, when quantifying the intensity o f reemitted light. The solution o f this l i m i t a t i o n was the goal o f the present work.

The Physical Properties Laboratory (LPF) has been working on the improvement of fruit and vegetable grading lines since 1992'. The experience shows that the improvement of grading lines for decreasing mechanical damages has to be approached from two viewpoints: 1) machinery aggressiveness, and 2) fruit susceptibility. Machinery aggressiveness can be characterized as impact probability for different impact intensities assessed by means of electronic fruits (IS-100) 2,5 . On the other hand, bruise susceptibility can be determined using different laboratory tests. A recent study from LPF4 shows that damage may arise differently in pome and in stone fruits, since: a) pome fruits are mainly stress-susceptible, while stone fruits appear to be more deformation-susceptible, and b) bruise size may be a good predictor for bruise susceptibility in pome fruits while for stone fruits bruise probability is the most relevant characteristic of bruise susceptibility. Also, this study indicates the feasibility of predicting bruise probability using several mechanical and load characterization parameters. Despite the efforts to establish damage thresholds in peachess, no simulation models are currently available for predicting bruise occurrence in grading lines.

In developing instrumentation for the measurement of fruit quality, there is the need for fast and non-destructive devices, based on sensors, to be installed on-line. In the case of some fruits, like peaches, post-harvest ripeness, which is closely related to high quality for the consumer, is a priority. During ripening, external appearance (colour) and internal mechanical (firmness) and chemical (sugars and acids) quality are main features that evolve rapidly from and unripe to a ripe (high quality) stage. When considering the evolution of fruit quality in this scheme, external colour and firmness are shown to evolve in a parallel pattern, if monitored from the time of harvest to full consumer ripeness ( Rood, 1957; Crisosto et al, 1995; Kader, 1996). The visible (VIS) reflectance spectrum is a fast and easy reference that can be used to estimate quality of peaches, if we could show it to be reliably correlated with peach ripening rate during postharvest (Genard et al. 1994; Moras, 1995; Delwiche and Baumgartner, 1983; Delwiche et al. 1987; Slaughter, 1995; Lleo et al., 1998). Taste, described as an expert acceptance score, improves with ripeness (firmness and colour evolution), when considering the fruits on the tree, and also post-harvest.

Results of previous studies conducted by different researchers have shown that impact techniques can be used to evaluate firmness (Delwiche et al., 1989; Delwiche et al.;1996; Jaren et al., 1992; Ruiz Altisent et al., 1996). To impact the fruit with a small spherical impactor of known mass and radius of curvature and measure the acceleration of the impactor is a technique described by Chen et al. (1985) and used by several researchers for sensing fruit firmness (Jaren et al., 1992; Correa et al.; 1992). The advantages of this method vs. a force sensor that measures the force as a function of time is that the measured impact-acceleration response is independent of the fruit mass and is less sensitive to the variation in the radius of curvature of the fruit (Chen et al., 1996). Ruiz Altisent et al. (1993) developed and used a 50 g impactor with a 19 mm diameter spherical tip, dropping from different height for fruits (apples, pears, avocados, melons, peaches ...). Another impact device for firmness sensing of fruits was developed by Chen and Ruiz Altisent (1996). They designed and fabricated an experimental low-mass impact sensor for high-speed sensing of fruit firmness. The impactor consisted of a semi-spherical impacting tip attached to the end (near the centre of percussion) of a pivoting arm. Impact is done by swinging the impactor to collide with the fruit. It has been implemented for on-line use. In both devices a small accelerometer is mounted behind the impacting tip. Lateral impactor and vertical impactor have been used in laboratory and the results from non-destructive impact tests have contributed to standardise methods to measure fruit firmness: Barreiro (1992) compared impact parameters and results of Magness-Taylor penetration tests for apples, pears, apricots [and peaches; Agulheiro (1994) studied the behaviour of the impact parameters during seven weeks of cold storage of two melon varieties; Ortiz (1998) used low energy impact and NIR procedures to segregate non crispy, non firm and soft peaches. Steinmetz (1996) compared various non-destructive firmness sensors, based on sound, impact and micro-deformation.

Caracterización de los procesos de disipación mecánica basándose en la microestructura de los tejidos blandos. We present a continuous damage model with regularized softening (smeared crack models) for fiber reinforced soft tissues. Material parameters of the continuous model derive from the mesoscopic scale. In the mesoscopic scale continuum is considered as a collagenous fibrilreinforced composite. We want to study the continnumlevel response as a function of the nanoscale properties of the collagen and the adherent forces between the tropocollagen molecules.

This study evaluates the effect of Lecirelin (Dalmarelin®, Fatro, Italy) diluted in different excipients (benzilic alcohol, benzoic acid and paraben) added to a seminal dose on LH concentrations, progesterone concentrations and ovarian status in rabbits. The in vitro effect on spermatozoa was also tested. A total of 100 multiparous female rabbits were divided into 5 groups, which at the moment of AI, received 0.2 mL (5 μg/dose) intramuscular (im) inoculation of Lecirelin (control) or the same Lecirelin dose administered intravaginally (iv) with the seminal dose alone (Lecirelin group) or with benzilic alcohol (Lecirelin BA group), benzoic acid (Lecirelin BAc group) or parabens (Lecirelin PA group) as an excipient. After 7 days, 10 rabbits per group were euthanized to analyze their ovarian status. In the control group, a high LH peak was detected 30 min post AI, while in the iv groups a slight increase in LH occurred after 120 min. The ovulation and fertility rate was similar in control and Lecirelin groups, while the lowest fertility rate was detected in the Lecirelin BA group. In a second experiment, the semen samples collected from male rabbits were diluted in TALP (control) or mixed with the 5 μg of Lecirelin solutions used in the first experiment. The highest percentage of capacitated sperm (68.3%) was recorded in the Lecirelin PA. The lowest percentages were observed in the Lecirelin BA and BAc groups. In conclusion, the iv administration of Lecirelin represents an alternative method for simplifying rabbit insemination procedures.

The effect of a diet enriched with polyunsaturated n -3 fatty acids (PUFA) on endocrine, reproductive, and productive responses of rabbit females and the litters has been studied. Nulliparous does ( n = 125) were fed ad libitum from rearing to second weaning two diets supplemented with different fat sources: 7.5 g/kg lard for the control diet (group C; n = 63) or 15 g/kg of a commercial supplement containing a 50% ether extract and 35% of total fatty acids (FAs) as PUFA n -3 (Group P; n = 62). Dietary treatments did not affect apparent digestibility coefficients of nutrients, or reproductive variables of does including milk pro- duction, mortality and average daily gain of kits over two lactations. However, on Day 5 and 7 post-induction of ovulation, progesterone of Group P tended to increase to a greater extent than in does of Group C. Total PUFAs, n -6 and n -3 and eicosapentanoic (EPA) contents were greater in adipose tissues of does in Group P than in Group C. Docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), EPA, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) concentrations were greater in peri-ovarian than in scapular fat with abdominal fat being intermediate in concentration. In PUFA sup- plemented does, kit mortality at the second parturition tended to be less than in control does. Also, kits born to does of the PUFA-supplemented group weighed more and were of greater length than from does of control group. In conclusion, effectiveness of dietary intervention on reproductive and performance response is greater in the second parity, which suggests an accumulative long-term beneficial effect of n -3 FA supplementation in reproductive rabbit does

Early ancestors of crop simulation models (De Wit, 1965; Monteith, 1965; Duncan et al., 1967) were born before primitive personal computers were available (e.g. Apple II released in 1977, IBM PC released in 1981). Paleo-computer programs were run in mainframes with the support of punch cards. As computers became more available and powerful, crop models evolved into sophisticated tools summarizing our understanding of how crops operate. This evolution was triggered by the need to answer new scientific questions and improve the accuracy of model simulations, especially under limiting conditions.

Esta tesis doctoral pretende desgranar una técnica de proyecto que la experiencia californiana ejemplifica y que puede ser descrita en términos pragmatistas. La arquitectura doméstica californiana fue la expresión tangible de una forma de ser y estar californiana pero también universal. El destinatario de esta arquitectura experimental y pragmática fue el individuo, tanto el gran mecenas como el liberal individualista de recursos moderados y aspiraciones infinitas; la gente corriente y, más tarde, la típica familia de clase media, fueron sin embargo el destinatario soñado en muchos ensayos de casa particular, frecuentemente en la casa del propio arquitecto. Arquitectos y clientes compartían el deseo común de un espacio doméstico involucrado en propiciar una vida sana, informal y hedonista, y en comunión con el aire, la naturaleza y el territorio, que satisficiera el espíritu independiente y emprendedor propio de una identidad libre y progresista. Participaron en ese sentido de la esperanza pragmatista de un futuro mejor, mediante la formulación de un modo de vida propio, moldeado por las distintas fuerzas motoras que definían el contexto. La principal de ellas fue la sensación de oportunidad: California se ofrecía como una tabula rasa con un clima paradisíaco; el paraíso soñado para generaciones sucesivas de recién llegados, que en la distancia con tradiciones preestablecidas en sus lugares de origen, encontraron el mayor estímulo para una actitud experimental que tomó el modo de vida como un material de proyecto para la formulación del espacio doméstico. Así, el proyecto doméstico californiano, fue un laboratorio cuyo trabajo mezclaba casos específicos con mitos e ilusiones, muchas veces cuestionadas; pero su interés reside en que puede ser, además de un referente estético y un icono visual, un ejemplo de una forma de proyectar que aborda el proyecto doméstico con talante indagador desde la receptividad al contexto físico, social y cultural; con capacidad para soñar y experimentar llevando los ideales a la práctica de los casos concretos; desde la atención al usuario, aunque sea anónimo; y usando un léxico llano, que devuelve toda la eficacia al vocabulario cotidiano. La experiencia californiana es por tanto, en este trabajo, sólo un ejemplo; un ejemplo paradigmático de una técnica de proyecto que puede ser de interés en otras circunstancias y contextos, y que concibe el espacio doméstico como la expresión, y también el laboratorio, del modo de vida. ABSTRACT This doctoral thesis aims to display a design’s technic that is exemplified by the Californian experience and can be described in pragmatic terms. The Californian domestic architecture was the tangible expression of a life style and way of being that was Californian but also universal. Home’s designed for the everyday experience attended the individual, both the rich sponsors of their own domestic design and the low income liberal individualists in search of an affordable but optimum home. But the dreamed target was ordinary people and the typical middle class family, as they represented the dream of a truly democratic society. Many domestic experiments for them took the form of particular cases, often in the house of the architect, which acted as a laboratory in search of general solutions. Architects and clients shared the common desire of a new domestic space, involved in promoting a healthy, casual and hedonistic lifestyle and in communion with the air, nature and territory, which satisfied the own independent and entrepreneurial spirit of a free and progressive identity. The way of life was therefore a design material, sensitive to the forces that shaped the region and its society through its domestic space. The main one was the feeling of opportunity: California offered itself as a tabula rasa with an exotic climate; the dreamed paradise for successive generations of newcomers who, in the distance with the pre-established traditions of their homelands, found the greatest incentive for an experimental attitude in which lifestyle was seen as project material to formulate the domestic space. Thus, the Californian domestic project can be more than an aesthetic reference and a visual icon; it is also an example of a design’s technic that approaches the domestic project with an inquisitive spirit sustained by these abilities: receptivity to the physical, social and cultural context; capacity to dream and to experiment, carrying ideals into practice; attention to the user, even when it’s anonymous; and use of a common lexicon that returns all the power to the everyday vocabulary. The Californian experience is therefore, in this dissertation, just an example; a paradigmatic example of a project technique that conceives domestic space as an expression, and also as a laboratory, of the way of life.
