A review of the available literature on central nervous system involvement in experimental trypanosomiasis cruzi is undertaken. From a critical analysis of 26 works on experimental infections with Trypanosoma cruzi (23 on the acute phase, 2 on the chronic phase, and one describing sequentially both phases), all supported by neuropathologic studies, it can be concluded that: 1) central nervous system involvement during the acute phase, in the form of encephalitis in multiple foci, with variable intensity of the parasitism and inflamatory changes, is frequent and well documented; 2) in animals with more severe central nervous system involvement death occurs as a result of the brain lesions or acute chagasic myocarditis, the latter being always present; 3) in animals with more discrete brain involviment death during the acute phase is due to complications not related to the nervous system, among which congestive heart failure second to acute chagasic myocarditis, a condition that is always present, regardless of whether or not the central nervous system is infected; 4) it is possible that in surviving animals that had mild encephalitis the inflammatory changes from the acute phase usually regress as the infection progress to the chronic phase.

The last several years have seen an increasing number of studies that describe effects of oxytocin and vasopressin on the behavior of animals or humans. Studies in humans have reported behavioral changes and, through fMRI, effects on brain function. These studies are paralleled by a large number of reports, mostly in rodents, that have also demonstrated neuromodulatory effects by oxytocin and vasopressin at the circuit level in specific brain regions. It is the scope of this review to give a summary of the most recent neuromodulatory findings in rodents with the aim of providing a potential neurophysiological basis for their behavioral effects. At the same time, these findings may point to promising areas for further translational research towards human applications.

We have recenty studied several natural product constituents which have effects on the CNS. (1) Tetrahydropalmatine (THP) and its analogues were isolated from Corydalis ambigua and various species of Stephania. (+)-THP and (-)-THP posses not only analgesic activity, but also exert sedative-tranquillizing and hypnotic actions. Results of receptor binding assay and their pre-and post-synaptic effects on dopaminergic system indicate that (-)-THP and (-)-stepholidine are dopamine receptor antagonists while (+)-THP is a selective dopamine depletor. (2) 3-Acetylaconitine (AAC) is an alkaloid isolated from Aconitum flavum. The relative potency of analgesic action of AAC was 5.1-35.6 and 1250-3912 times that of morphine and aspirin, respectively. The analgesic effect of AAC was antagonized by naloxone, but was eliminated by reserpine. In monkeys, after AAC was injected for 92 days, no abstinence syndrome was seen after sudden AAC withdrawal or when challenged with nalorphine. (3) Huperzine A (Hup-A) is an alkaloid isolated from Huperzia serrata which was found to be a selective ChE inhibitor and could improve learning and retrieval process. Preliminary clinical studies showed that Hup-A improve short-and long-term memory in patients of cerebral arteriosclerosis with memory impairment. (4) Ranamargarin is a new tetradecapeptide isolated from the skin of the Chines frog Rana margaratae. This peptide may mainly act on NK-1 receptor.

BACKGROUND: Reconstruction of the central aortic pressure wave from the noninvasive recording of the radial pulse with applanation tonometry has become a standard tool in the field of hypertension. It is not presently known whether recording the radial pulse on the dominant or the nondominant side has any effect on such reconstruction. METHOD: We carried out radial applanation tonometry on both forearms in young, healthy, male volunteers, who were either sedentary (n = 11) or high-level tennis players (n = 10). The purpose of including tennis players was to investigate individuals with extreme asymmetry between the dominant and nondominant upper limb. RESULTS: In the sedentary individuals, forearm circumference and handgrip strength were slightly larger on the dominant (mean +/- SD respectively 27.9 +/- 1.5 cm and 53.8 +/- 10 kg) than on nondominant side (27.3 +/- 1.6 cm, P < 0.001 vs. dominant, and 52.1 +/- 11 kg, P = NS). In the tennis players, differences between sides were more conspicuous (forearm circumference: dominant 28.0 +/- 1.7 cm nondominant 26.4 +/- 1.5 cm, P < 0.001; handgrip strength 61.4 +/- 10.8 vs. 53.4 +/- 9.7 kg, P < 0.001). We found that in both sedentary individuals and tennis players, the radial pulse had identical shape on both sides and, consequently, the reconstructed central aortic pressure waveforms, as well as derived indices of central pulsatility, were not dependent on the side where applanation tonometry was carried out. CONCLUSION: Evidence from individuals with maximal asymmetry of dominant vs. nondominant upper limb indicates that laterality of measurement is not a methodological issue for central pulse wave analysis carried out with radial applanation tonometry.

Characteristics and possible risk factors associated with Trypanosoma cruzi infection among blood donors were assessed within a routine screening programme in blood banks in an endemic area of Chagas disease. 6,172 voluntary blood donors were interviewed and tested for anti-T. cruzi antibodies by Haemagglutination and Complement Fixation tests in six blood banks in Goiânia-Central Brazil from October 1988 to April 1989. An overall prevalence of 2.3% for T. cruzi infection was obtained, being 3.3% for first-time blood donors, and 1.9% for regular ones (p < 0.01). Considering this seropositivity among regular blood donors, selection of candidates relying only on the history of previous donation was found to be inadequate. The risk of infection increased inversely with the degrees of education and monthly income. There was a 9.2 risk of infection (95% CI 3.8-22.6) for those who had lived more than 21 years in an endemic area compared to subjects who had never lived in rural settings, after multivariate analysis. These informations may help to review the criteria of selection of donors in order to improve quality of blood products in endemic areas.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative central neurologic deficits in the context of acute type A dissection are a complex comorbidity and difficult to handle. The aim this study was to analyze this subgroup of patients by comparing them with neurologically asymptomatic patients with type A dissection. Results may help the surgeon in preoperative risk assessment and thereby aid in the decision-making process. METHODS: We reviewed the data of patients admitted for acute type A dissection during the period from 1999 to 2010. Associated risk factors, time to surgery from admission, extension of the dissection, localization of central nervous ischemic lesions, and the influence of perioperative brain protective strategies were analyzed in a comparison of preoperative neurologically deficient to nondeficient patients. RESULTS: Forty-seven (24.5%) of a total of 192 patients had new-onset central neurologic symptoms prior to surgery. Concomitant myocardial infarction (OR 4.9, 95% CI 1.6-15.3, P = 0.006), renal failure (OR 5.9, 95% CI 1.1-32.8, P = 0.04), dissected carotid arteries (OR 9.2, 95% CI 2.4-34.7, P = 0.001), and late admission to surgery at >6 hours after symptom onset (OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.1-6.8, P = 0.04) were observed more frequently in neurologically deficient patients. These patients had a higher 30-day in-hospital mortality on univariate analysis (P = 0.01) and a higher rate of new postoperative neurologic deficits (OR 9.2, 95% CI 2.4-34.7, P = 0.02). Neurologic survivors had an equal hospital stay, and 67% of them had improved symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: The predominance of neurologic symptoms at admission may be responsible for an initial misdiagnosis. The concurrent central nervous system ischemia and myocardial infarction explains a higher mortality rate and a more extensive "character" of the disease. Neurologically deficient patients are at higher risk of developing new postoperative neurologic symptoms, but prognosis for the neurologic evolution of survivors is generally favorable.

Fossil shells collected during excavations in Toca da Esperança, BA, were identified on morphological grounds as: Artemon intermedius intermedius (Albers, 1857); Gastrocopta (Privatula) corticaria (Say); Bulimulus (Rhinus) heterotrichus (Moricand, 1836) and Polygyratia polygyrata polygyrata (Born, 1780). Bone samples found associated with these shells were dated by the Uranium - Thorium method as being between 204,000 and 295,000 years old (Middle - Upper Pleistocene). Species of the mastofauna also found associated, on the other hand, were identified as being of the Upper Pleistocene or even of the beginning of the Holocene. The material studied here was not dated.

Experiences with population-based chemotherapy and other methods for the control of schistosomiasis mansoni in two subsaharan foci are described. In the forest area of Maniema (Zaire), intense transmission of Schistosoma mansoni, high prevalences and intensities of infection, and important morbidity have been documental. Taking into account the limited financial means and the poor logistic conditions, the control strategy has been based mainly on targeted chemotherapy of heavily infected people (>600 epg). After ten years of intervention, prevalences and intensities have hardly been affected, but the initial severe hepatosplenic morbidity has almost disappeared. In Burundi, a national research and control programme has been initiated in 1982. Prevalences, intensities and morbidity were moderate, transmission was focal and erratic in time and space. A more structural control strategy was developed, based on screening and selective therapy, health education, sanitation and domestic water supply. Prevalences and intensities have been considerably reduced, though the results show focal and unpredicatable variations. Transmission and reinfection were not signifcantly affected by chemotherapy alone, and eventual outcome of repeated selective treatment appears to be limited by the sensitivity of the screening method. Intestinal morbidity was strongly reduced by community-based selective treatment, but hepatosplenic enlargement was hardly affected; this is possibly due to the confounding impact of increasing malaria morbidity. The experiences show the importance of local structures and conditions for the development of an adapted control strategy. It is further concluded that population-based chemotherapy is a highly valid tool for the rapid control of morbidity, but should in most operational conditions not be considered as a tool for transmission control. We study planar central configurations of the five-body problem where three of the bodies are collinear, forming an Euler central configuration of the three-body problem, and the two other bodies together with the collinear configuration are in the same plane. The problem considered here assumes certain symmetries. From the three bodies in the collinear configuration, the two bodies at the extremities have equal masses and the third one is at the middle point between the two. The fourth and fifth bodies are placed in a symmetric way: either with respect to the line containing the three bodies, or with respect to the middle body in the collinear configuration, or with respect to the perpendicular bisector of the segment containing the three bodies. The possible stacked five-body central configurations satisfying these types of symmetries are: a rhombus with four masses at the vertices and a fifth mass in the center, and a trapezoid with four masses at the vertices and a fifth mass at the midpoint of one of the parallel sides.
