X-Ray photoelectron spectra of some bioinorganic complexes of La, Ce, PT, Nd, Sm and Eu with N-acetylalanine have been measured and the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 main peaks and their satellites have also been assigned. ne spin-orbit splitting between the 3d5/2 and 3d3/2 core-level of the rare earth ion in these complexes becomes slightly larger than that of the free rare earth atom due to the effect of the crystal field. The satellite for the 3d main peaks of La in the solid state complex are in higher binding energy region and may be attributable to the L --> 4f charge-transfer shake-up process. The satellites for the 3d main peaks of Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm and Eu are in the lower binding energy region and may be attributable to the 4f --> L charge-transfer shake-down process.

The CIAC (Changchun Institute of Applied Chemistry) Comprehensive information System of Rare Earths is composed of three subsystems, namely, extraction data, physicochemical properties, and reference data. This paper describes the databases pertaining to the extraction of rare earths and their physicochemical properties and discusses the relationships between data retrieval and optimization and between the structures of the extractants and the efficiency with which they are extracted. Expert systems for rare earth extraction and calculation of thermodynamic parameters are described, and an application of pattern recognition to the problems of classification of compounds of the rare earths and prediction of their properties is reported.

The protonation constant of the ligand and stability constants of it complexes with rare earths have been determined by potentiometric titration at 25 degrees C and ionic strength mu=0.15 mol - L-1. The results indicate that rare earth elements can form 1:1 complexes with L methionine. There is an apparent "tetrad effect" in this system. Shift of the yttrium position to the vicinity of Gd can he explained by the different polarisation between the Ln(3+) and the ligand. The enthalpy changed (Lambda H-101) of the coordination reaction as represented by the reaction (M + L (sic) ML) here been measured by calorimetric titration, where M and L. denote are eartus and L-Mer respectively. The Lambda G(101) and Delta S-101 of these reaction have been calculated by using Gibbs' equation, Furthermore, the stability of rare earth complexes with L-Met has been compared with that of Ca3+ Zn3+, Fe2+, Fe3+ complexes with L-Met.

Rare earth elements have occupied an important role in marine geochemical research, particularly as used in the format of REE abundance patterns to describe the geochemical pathways in marine sedimentation and authigenesis. This study concentrates on the distribution pattern of Rare earth elements in the sediments, behavior of Eu and Ce with respect to their occurrence in multiple oxidation states. It also concentrate the depth wise variation of sediment REEs from near shore areas (30m) to deeper depths 200m) in the Arabian Sea. It includes the downcore variation of REEs and other trace elements in the sediment cores and a comparison between the REE distributions of Arabian Sea sediment with the sediments of Andaman Sea. The study gives a general introduction regarding the importance of RRE studies, its occurrence and abundance, electronic configuration, lanthanide contraction, oxidations states and REE supply to the ocean, seawater and sediments.

In this work, GdAlO3:RE3+ (RE = Eu or Tb) was successfully prepared by the Pechini method at lower temperatures when compared to others methods as solid-state synthesis and sol-gel process. In accordance to the XRD data, the fully crystalline single-phase GdAlO3 could be obtained at 900 degrees C. The differential thermal analysis (DTA) shows a crystallization peak at 850 degrees C. The samples are composed by monocrystalline particles (50-120 nm) exhibiting the formation of aggregates among them, which indicates the beginning of the sinterization process. This feature indicates a strong tendency to the formation of aggregates, which is a suitable ability for the close-packing of particles, and hence a potential application in X-ray intensifying screens. Luminescence measurements indicate Gd3+ -> RE3+ energy transfer. The Eu3+ emission spectra exhibit all the characteristics D-5(0) -> F-7(j) transitions and the observed profile suggests that RE3+ ions occupy at least one site without center of symmetry. For terbium-doped samples, the D-5(3) -> F-7(j) (blue emission) and D-5(4) -> F-7(j) (green emission) transitions were observed and the ratio between them may depend on the Tb3+ content due to cross-relaxation processes. The tin dioxide is an n-type semiconductor, which exhibits varistor behavior with high capacity of absorption of energy, whose function is to restrict transitory over-voltages without being destroyed, when it is doped with some oxides. Varistors are used in alternated current fields as well as in continuous current, and it can be applied in great interval of voltages or in great interval of currents. The electric properties of the varistor depend on the defects that happen at the grain boundaries and the adsorption of oxygen. The (98.90-x)%SnO2.0.25%CoO+0.75%MnO2+0.05%Ta2O5+0.05%Tr2O3 systems, in which Tr=La or Nd. Current-voltage measurements were accomplished for determination of the non-linear coefficient were studied. SEM microstructure analysis was made to evaluate the microstructural characteristics of the systems. The results showed that the rare-earth oxides have influenced the electrical behavior presented by the system. (C) 2002 Kluwer Academic Publishers.

Er3+ doped SnO2 xerogels have been obtained from aqueous colloidal suspensions. Emission and excitation spectra were obtained and allowed the identification of two main families of sites for Er3+. In the first one Er3+ substitutes for Sn4+ in the SnO2 cassiterite structure. In the second Er3+ are found adsorbed at the SnO2 particle surface. For the first family of sites the technological important infrared Er3+ emission about 1.5 mum is efficiently excited through absorption at the SnO2 conduction band at 3.8 eV. on the other hand the emission due to adsorbed ions appears inhomogeneously broadened by the statistical distribution of sites available for Er3+ ions at the surface of the particles. Moreover it is not excited by the host. The emission of this second family of sites could be also excited by an energy transfer mechanism involving Yb3+ ions also adsorbed a posteriori at particles surface. Results are compared with spectra obtained for Eu3+ doped samples. (C) 2002 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Organic-inorganic hybrids, named di-ureasils and described by polyether-based chains grafted to both ends to a siliceous backbone through urea cross linkages, were used as hosts for incorporation of the well-known coordination complex of trivalent europium (Eu3+) ions described by the formula [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] (where TTA stands for thenoyltrifluoroacetone). By comparing with Eu3+-doped di-ureasil without complex form the new materials prepared here enhanced the quantum efficiency for photoemission of Eu3+ ions. The enhancement can be explained by the coordination ability of the organic counterpart of the host structure which is strong enough to displace water molecules in [Eu(TTA)(3)(H2O)(2)] from the rare earth neighbourhood after the incorporation process. High intensity of Eu3+ emission was observed with a low non-radiative decay rate under ultraviolet excitation. The quantum efficiency calculated from the decay of D-5(0) emission was 74%, which in the same range of values previously obtained for the most efficient Eu3+ coordination compounds reported in literature. Luminescence, X-ray absorption and infrared absorption results considered together leads to a picture where the first coordination shell of Eu3+ is composed of the 6 oxygen atoms of the 3 beta-diketonate ligands and 2 ether-like oxygen atoms of the host. Nowadays solid state chemists have the possibility of work with low temperature strategies to obtain solid state materials with appropriate physical and chemical properties for useful technological applications. Photonic core shell materials having a core and shell domains composed by a variety of compounds have been synthesized by different methods. In this work we used silica-germania soot prepared by vapor-phase axial deposition as a core where a nanoshell of Eu2O3 was deposited. A new sol-gel like method was used to obtain the Eu2O3 nanoshell coating the SiO2-GeO2 particles, which was prepared by the polymeric precursor method. The photophysical properties of Eu3+ were used to obtain information about the rare earth surrounding in the SiO2-GeO2@Eu2O3 material during the sintering process. The sintering process was followed by the luminescence spectra of Eu3+ and all the samples present the characteristic emission related to the D-5(0) -> F-7(J) (J=0, 1, 2, 3 and 4). The ratios of the D-5(0) -> F-7(2)/D-5(0) -> F-7(1) emission intensity for the SiO2-GeO2@Eu2O3 systems were calculated and it was observed an increase in its values, indicating a low symmetry around the Eu3+ as the temperature increases.

The luminescence properties of solid hydrated lanthanide squarates (Ln2(C4O4)3(H2O) x; x = 8 or 13;Ln3+ = Gd, La, Eu, Tb, Pr) are reported for temperatures down to 4.2K. The luminescence of the squarate group is observed for the Gd3+ and La3+ compounds at low temperatures (below 150K). The Pr3+ compound does not show any emission at all, not even at 4.2K. This is ascribed to the quenching of the Pr3+ emission by multiphonon relaxation and/or concentration quenching. The quantum efficiencies of the 5D0 emission of Eu3+ and of the 5D4 emission of Tb3+ in these squarate complexes are strikingly different. Whereas the Tb3+ emission shows a temperature independent quantum efficiency of 50% upon ligand excitation, the Eu3+ emission is strongly quenched, showing a temperature dependent quantum efficiency of 0.8% at 4.2K upon ligand excitation. This quenching is ascribed to the low energy position of the charge-transfer state of Eu3+ in these compounds.

Orthorhombic modification of europium doped lanthanum trimetaphosphate has been prepared. The compound was obtained by precipitation of rare earth chloride solution with trimetaphosphoric acid. The characterizations were made using X-ray diffractometry, chemical analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Excitation and emission spectra were recorded at liquid nitrogen and room temperatures. Assignments of the 5D0→7FJ (J=0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5) transitions were made and an unusual high 5D0→7F4 transition intensity with six split lines has been observed. Structural distortion of the crystal lattice may be caused by the Eu3+ ion inclusion. The simple overlap model was applied for the calculation of the total splitting of the 5D0→7F1 transition, the 5D0→7F0/5D 0→7F2 transition intensity ratio and the Ωλ (λ=2.4) intensity parameters. Theoretical predictions showed to be in good accordance with the experimental data. © 1988 Elsevier Science S.A.

The magnetic and structural properties of sol-gel derived organic/inorganic nanocomposites doped with Fe(II), Fe(III), Nd(III) and Eu (III) ions are discussed. These hybrids consist of poly(oxyethylene)-based chains grafted onto siloxane nanodomains by urea cross-linkages. Small angle X-ray scattering data show the presence of spatial correlations of siloxane domains embedded in the polymer matrix. The magnetic properties of rare-earth doped samples are determined by single ion crystal-field-splitted levels (Eu3+ J=0; Nd3+ J=9/2) and the small thermal irreversibility is mainly associated to structural effects. Fe2+ -doped samples behave as simple paramagnet with residual antiferromagnetic interactions. Fe3+-doped hybrids are much more complex, with magnetic hysterisis, exchange anisotropy and thermal irreversibility at low temperatures. Néel temperatures increase up to 14K for the highest (∼5.5%) Fe3+ mass concentration.

Thin films of tin dioxide (SnO2) are deposited by the sol-gel-dip-coating technique, along with GaAs layers, deposited by the resistive evaporation technique. The as-built heterojunction has potential application in optoelectronic devices, combining the emission from the rare-earth doped transparent oxide (Eu3+-doped SnO2 presents very efficient red emission) with a high mobility semiconductor. The advantage of this structure is the possibility of separation of the rare-earth emission centers from the electron scattering, leading to a strongly indicated combination for electroluminescence. Electrical characterization of the heterojunction SnO2:Eu/GaAs shows a significant conductivity increase when compared to the conductivity of the individual films, and the monochromatic light irradiation (266 nm) at low temperature of the heterojunction GaAs/SnO2:Eu leads to intense conductivity increase. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) of the heterojunction cross section shows high adherence and good morphological quality of the interfaces substrate/SnO2 and SnO2/GaAs, even though the atomic force microscopy (AFM) image of the GaAs surface shows disordered particles, which increases with sample thickness. On the other hand, the good morphology of the SnO2:Eu surface, shown by AFM, assures the good electrical performance of the heterojunction. The observed improvement on the electrical transport properties is probably related to the formation of short conduction channels at the semiconductors interface, which may exhibit two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) behavior. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. Rare earth complexes (RE) can be incorporated in silica matrixes, originating organic/inorganic hybrid materials with good thermal stability and high rare earth emission lines. In this work, the hybrid material was obtained by the polymeric precursor method and ultrasonic dispersed with spherical silica particles prepared by the Stöber Method. The Raman spectra indicated that the Eu3+ ions are involved in a polymeric structure formed as consequence of the chelation and polyesterification reactions of this ion with citric acid and ethylene glycol. After the ultrasonic stirring, 2-hydroxynicotinic ligand will also compose this polymeric rigid structure. The TGA/DTA analysis showed that this polymeric material was thermal decomposed at 300 °C. Moreover, this process allows the chelating process of the 2-hydroxynicotinic acid ligand to the Eu3+ ions. The 29Si NMR showed that the ultrasonic dispersion of the reactants was not able to promote the functionalization of the silica particles with the 2-hydroxynicotinic acid ligand. Moreover, heat treatment promotes the [Eu(HnicO2)3] complex particles incorporation into silica pores. At this temperature, the TGA curve showed that only the thermal degradation of ethylene glycol and citric acid used during the experimental procedure occurs. The silica and hybrid materials are composed by spherical and aggregated particles with particle size of approximately 450 nm, which can be influenced by the heat treatment. These materials also present an absorption band located at 337 nm. The photoluminescent study showed that when the hybrid samples were excited at 337 nm wavelength, the ligand absorbs the excitation light. Part of this energy is transferred to the Eu3+ ion, which main emission, 5D0→ 7F2, is observed in the emission spectrum at 612 nm. As the heating temperature increases to 300 C, the energy transfer is more favorable. The lifetime values showed that the Eu3+ emission is enhanced due to the energy transfer process in the powders. © 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
