A series of ferrite samples with the compositional formula, Ni0.5Co0.5-xZnxFe2O4 (0 <= x <= 0.5), was prepared using the citrate based sol gel method for the better understanding of zinc doping on the structural and magnetic properties. The Rietveld-refined X-ray diffraction data revealed that the samples are having cubic structure with the Fd-3m space group. The lattice parameter increased linearly with increasing Zn content. The surface morphology and stoichiometric ratio of the compositional elements were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). EDS showed that the elemental ratios were stoichiometric. An examination of the magnetic properties revealed an increase in saturation magnetization with increasing Zn concentration up to x=0.3 and a decrease thereafter. These results could be explained using Neel's collinear two-sub-lattice model and three-sub-lattice non-collinear model suggested by Yafet and Kittel. The magnetic cubic anisotropy constant determined by the law of approach to saturation decreased with increasing Zn content. The underlying mechanism behind observed behavior was discussed qualitatively. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. All rights reserved.

In continuation of our interest in pyrazole based multifunctional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), we report herein the construction of a series of Co(II) MOFs using a bis-pyrazole ligand and various benzene polycarboxylic acids. Employment of different acids has resulted in different architectures ranging from a two-dimensional grid network, porous nanochannels with interesting double helical features such as supramolecular chicken wire, to three-dimensional diamondoid networks. One of the distinguishing features of the network is their larger dimensions which can be directly linked to a relatively larger size of the ligand molecule. Conformational flexibility of the ligand also plays a decisive role in determining both the dimensionality and topology of the final structure. Furthermore, chirality associated with helical networks and magnetic properties of two MOFs have also been investigated.

Employing nitronyl nitroxide lanthanide(III) complexes as metallo-ligands allowed the efficient and highly selective preparation of three series of unprecedented heterotri-spin (Cu Ln-radical) one-dimensional compounds. These 2p-3d-4f spin systems, namely Ln(3)Cu(hfac)II(NitPhOAII)41 (Ln(III)=Gd 1(Gd), Tb 1(Tb), Dy 1(Dy); NitPhOAII=2-(4'-allyloxyphenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl-3- oxide), Ln(3)Cu(hfac)II(NitPhOPO4] (1-nrn=Gd 2Gd, Tb 2Tb, Dy 2(Dy), Ho 2HOf Yb 2yb; NitPhOPr= 2-(4'-propoxyphenyI)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) and Ln3Cu(hfac)II(NitPhOB441 (LnIm=Gd 3Gd, Tb 3Tb, Dy 3(Dy); NitPhOBz=2-(4'-benzyloxy- phenyl)-4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-imidazoline-1-oxyl-3-oxide) involve O-bound nitronyl nitroxide radicals as bridging ligands in chain structures with a Cu-Nit-Ln-Nit-Ln-Nit-Ln-Nit] repeating unit. The dc magnetic studies show that ferromagnetic metal radical interactions take place in these heterotri-spin chain complexes, these and the next-neighbor interactions have been quantified for the Gd derivatives. Complexes 1Tb and 2Tb exhibit frequency dependence of ac magnetic susceptibilities, indicating single-chain magnet behavior.

TiO2 thin films with 0.2 wt%, 0.4 wt%, 0.6 wt%, and 0.8 wt% Fe were prepared on glass and silicon substrates using sol-gel spin coating technique. The optical cut-off points are increasingly red-shifted and the absorption edge is shifted over the higher wavelength region with Fe content increasing. As Fe content increases, the optical band gap decreases from 3.03 to 2.48 eV whereas the tail width increases from 0.26 to 1.43 eV. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns for doped films at 0.2 wt% and 0.8 wt% Fe reveal no characteristic peaks, indicating that the film is amorphous whereas undoped TiO2 exhibits (101) orientation with anatase phase. Thin films of higher Fe content exhibit a homogeneous, uniform, and nano-structured highly porous shell morphology.

The solvothermal reaction of CoCl(2)4H(2)O and 4,4-sulfonyldibenzoic acid (H(2)SDBA) resulted in the formation of a three-dimensional coordination polymer Co-3(C14H8O6S)(3)(DMA)(2)(MeOH)].DMA (Ia) consisting of trinuclear Co-3 oxo-cluster units. The Co-3 trimeric units are connected by SDBA(2-) anions leading to a three dimensional structure with a pcu topology. The terminal methanol molecules could be exchanged in a single crystal to single crystal (SCSC) fashion by other similar solvent molecules (ethanol, acetonitrile, water, ethyleneglycol). Magnetic studies on the parent compound, Ia, indicate antiferromagnetic interactions between the central metal atoms.

Undoped and Sn-doped WO3 thin films were grown on cleaned glass substrates by chemical spray pyrolysis, using ammonium tungstate (NH4)(2)WO4 as the host precursor and tin chloride (SnCl4 center dot 5H(2)O) as the source of dopant. The XRD spectra confirm the monoclinic structure with a sharp narrow peak along (200) direction along with other peaks of low relative intensities for all the samples. On Sn doping, the films exhibit reduced crystallinity relative to the undoped film. The standard deviation for relative peak intensity with dopant concentration shows enhancement in heterogeneous nucleation growth. As evident from SEM images, on Sn doping, appearance of island-like structure (i.e., cluster of primary crystallites at few places) takes place. The transmittance has been found to decrease in all the Sn-doped films. The optical band gap has been calculated for both direct and indirect transitions. On Sn doping, the direct band gap shows a red shift and becomes 2.89 eV at 2 at.% doping. Two distinct peaks, one blue emission at 408 nm and other green emission at 533 nm, have been found in the PL spectra. Electrical conductivity has been found to increase with Sn doping.

Ferrimagnetism and metamagnetic features tunable by composition are observed in the magnetic response of Nd1-xYxMnO3, for x=0.1-0.5. For all values of x in the series, the compound crystallizes in orthorhombic Pbnm space group similar to NdMnO3. Magnetization studies reveal a phase transition of the Mn-sublattice below T-N(Mn) approximate to 80 K for all compositions, which, decreases up on diluting the Nd-site with Yttrium. For x=0.35, ferrimagnetism is observed. At 5 K, metamagnetic transition is observed for all compositions x < 0.4. The evolution of magnetic ground states and appearance of ferrimagnetism in Nd1-xYxMnO3 can be accounted for by invoking the scenario of magnetic phase separation. The high frequency electron paramagnetic resonance measurements on x=0.4 sample, which is close to the critical composition for phase separation, revealed complex temperature dependent lineshapes clearly supporting the assumption of magnetic phase separation. We report structural, magnetic, and dielectric properties of the perovskite compound Pr1-xYxMnO3 (0.1 <= x <= 0.4) studied using dc magnetization, ac susceptibility, neutron powder diffraction, and dielectric techniques. These compounds crystallize in orthorhombic space group (Pnma) in the temperature range 5-300 K. The Mn-O-Mn bond angle decreases with the Y substitution along with an increase in the Jahn-Teller distortion. The Jahn-Teller distortion for Pr0.9Y0.1MnO3 shows an anomalous change near 50 K, below which it falls sharply. Neutron powder diffraction patterns of all reported compositions at low temperature constitute additional magnetic Bragg peaks that suggest magnetic ordering. Magnetic reflections were indexed in the nuclear lattice with the propagation vector k = (0, 0, 0). Rietveld refinement of powder patterns conform to A type antiferromagnetic ordering where moments are aligned ferromagnetically in a-c plane and coupled nearly antiferromagnetically along b-axis resulting in a net ferromagnetic component along the b-direction. The antiferromagnetic transition temperature was deduced from dc magnetization and ac susceptibility data. The transition temperature decreases by nearly 22 K (from 81 K to 59 K) as yttrium content (x) increases from 0.1 to 0.4. Measurements reveal strong frequency dispersion in dielectric constant and dielectric loss. Activation energy and relaxation time are estimated from the Arrhenius plot. It is further shown that relaxation behaviour is altered with yttrium doping concentration. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

We report an enhanced actuation in bulk carbon nanotubes (CNTs) under coupled electric and magnetic fields, which is much higher than that evaluated in the presence of individual fields. Coupled electric and magnetic fields induce a directional actuation demonstrating a transformation from polarity independent to dependent actuation behavior of CNTs. Both qualitative and quantitative analyses are performed to understand this transformation in the bulk CNTs. Moreover, actuations along radial and axial directions of CNTs have also demonstrated a similar directional behavior.

We formulate a natural model of loops and isolated vertices for arbitrary planar graphs, which we call the monopole-dimer model. We show that the partition function of this model can be expressed as a determinant. We then extend the method of Kasteleyn and Temperley-Fisher to calculate the partition function exactly in the case of rectangular grids. This partition function turns out to be a square of a polynomial with positive integer coefficients when the grid lengths are even. Finally, we analyse this formula in the infinite volume limit and show that the local monopole density, free energy and entropy can be expressed in terms of well-known elliptic functions. Our technique is a novel determinantal formula for the partition function of a model of isolated vertices and loops for arbitrary graphs.

We re-assess experimental soft X-ray absorption spectra of the oxygen K-shell which we recorded operando from iron oxide during photoelectrochemical water splitting in KOH electrolyte. In particular, we refer to recently reported transitional electron hole states which originate within the charge carrier depletion layer of the iron oxide and on the iron oxide surface. For the latter we find that an intermediate oxy-peroxo species is formed on the iron oxide with increasing bias potential, which disappears upon further polarization of the electrode, concomitantly with the evolution and disappearance of the aforementioned surface state. The oxygen spectra contain also the spectroscopic signatures of the electrolyte water, the position of which changes with increasing bias potential towards lower X-ray energies, revealing the breaking and formation of hydrogen bonds in the water during the experiment. Combined with potential dependent impedance spectroscopy data we are able to sketch the molecular structure of chemical intermediates and their charge carrier dynamics. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Tb1-xSrxMnO3 (x = 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4 and 0.5) polycrystalline samples are prepared via conventional solid state synthesis route. All samples crystallize in orthorhombic Pnma space group and possess O'-type distortion. Orthorhombic and octahedral distortion is found to decrease with increase in Sr content. At intermediate distortion, (20% and 30% doping level) Curie-Weiss analysis of inverse dc magnetic susceptibility data yields +ve Curies-Weiss constant, characteristic of FM interaction. Isothermal magnetization measurements give the highest magnitude of magnetic moment at these compositions.

Topological crystalline insulators (TCIs) are a new quantum state of matter in which linearly dispersed metallic surface states are protected by crystal mirror symmetry. Owing to its vanishingly small bulk band gap, a TCI like Pb0.6Sn0.4Te has poor thermoelectric properties. Breaking of crystal symmetry can widen the band gap of TCI. While breaking of mirror symmetry in a TCI has been mostly explored by various physical perturbation techniques, chemical doping, which may also alter the electronic structure of TCI by perturbing the local mirror symmetry, has not yet been explored. Herein, we demonstrate that Na doping in Pb0.6Sn0.4Te locally breaks the crystal symmetry and opens up a bulk electronic band gap, which is confirmed by direct electronic absorption spectroscopy and electronic structure calculations. Na doping in Pb0.6Sn0.4Te increases p-type carrier concentration and suppresses the bipolar conduction (by widening the band gap), which collectively gives rise to a promising zT of 1 at 856 K for Pb0.58Sn0.40Na0.02Te. Breaking of crystal symmetry by chemical doping widens the bulk band gap in TCI, which uncovers a route to improve TCI for thermoelectric applications.

The effect of the La3+ and Gd3+ co-doping on the structure, electric and magnetic properties of BiFeO3 (BFO) ceramics are investigated. For the compositions (x=0 and 0 <= y <= 0.15) in the perovskite structured LaxGdyBi1-xFeO3 system, a tiny residual phase of Bi2Fe4O9 is noticed. Such a secondary phase is suppressed with the incorporation of `La' content (x). The magnitude of dielectric constant (epsilon(r) increases progressively by increasing the `La' content from x=0 to 0.15 with a remarkable decrease of dielectric loss. For x=0.15, the system LaxGdyBi1-x(x+y)FeO3 exhibits highest remanent magnetization (M-r) of 0.18 emu/g and coercive magnetic field (H-c) of similar to 1 Tin the presence of external magnetic field of 9 T at 300 K. The origin of enhanced dielectric and magnetic properties of LaxGdyBil (x+y)Fe03 and the role of doping elements, La3+, Gd3+ has been discussed. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd and Techna Group S.r.l. The magnetic structures and the magnetic phase transitions in the Mn-doped orthoferrite TbFeO3 studied using neutron powder diffraction are reported. Magnetic phase transitions are identified at T-N(Fe/Mn) approximate to 295K where a paramagnetic-to-antiferromagnetic transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice, T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K where a spin-reorientation transition occurs in the Fe/Mn sublattice and T-N(R) approximate to 2K where Tb-ordering starts to manifest. At 295 K, the magnetic structure of the Fe/Mn sublattice in TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 belongs to the irreducible representation Gamma(4) (G(x)A(y)F(z) or Pb'n'm). A mixed-domain structure of (Gamma(1) + Gamma(4)) is found at 250K which remains stable down to the spin re-orientation transition at T-SR(Fe/Mn) approximate to 26K. Below 26K and above 250 K, the majority phase (>80%) is that of Gamma(4). Below 10K the high-temperature phase Gamma(4) remains stable till 2K. At 2 K, Tb develops a magnetic moment value of 0.6(2) mu(B)/f.u. and orders long-range in F-z compatible with the Gamma(4) representation. Our study confirms the magnetic phase transitions reported already in a single crystal of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3 and, in addition, reveals the presence of mixed magnetic domains. The ratio of these magnetic domains as a function of temperature is estimated from Rietveld refinement of neutron diffraction data. Indications of short-range magnetic correlations are present in the low-Q region of the neutron diffraction patterns at T < T-SR(Fe/Mn). These results should motivate further experimental work devoted to measure electric polarization and magnetocapacitance of TbFe0.5Mn0.5O3. (C) 2016 AIP Publishing LLC.
