We investigated the feeding ecology of juvenile salmon during the critical early life-history stage of transition from shallow to deep marine waters by sampling two stations (190 m and 60 m deep) in a northeast Pacific fjord (Dabob Bay, WA) between May 1985 and October 1987. Four species of Pacific salmon—Oncorhynchus keta (chum) , O. tshawytscha (Chinook), O. gorbuscha (pink), and O. kisutch (coho)—were examined for stomach contents. Diets of these fishes varied temporally, spatially, and between species, but were dominated by insects, euphausiids, and decapod larvae. Zooplankton assemblages and dry weights differed between stations, and less so between years. Salmon often demonstrated strongly positive or negative selection for specific prey types: copepods were far more abundant in the zooplankton than in the diet, whereas Insecta, Araneae, Cephalapoda, Teleostei, and Ctenophora were more abundant in the diet than in the plankton. Overall diet overlap was highest for Chinook and coho salmon (mean=77.9%)—species that seldom were found together. Chum and Chinook salmon were found together the most frequently, but diet overlap was lower (38.8%) and zooplankton biomass was not correlated with their gut fullness (%body weight). Thus, despite occasional occurrences of significant diet overlap between salmon species, our results indicate that interspecific competition among juvenile salmon does not occur in Dabob Bay.

[EUS] Ikerketa lan honen helburua urte biko gela batean ematen diren egoera gatazkatsuak eta horietan burutzen diren esku-hartze mota desberdinak aztertzea izan da. Horretarako, bi alditan banandu da ikerketa honen zeregina: fase esploratzailean eta fase zientifikoan, hain zuzen. Lehenengoan, gaiari buruzko hausnarketa teoriko sakon bat gauzatzearekin batera, ikerketaren behaketa esparruak zehaztu dira, hala nola, zer, noiz, non eta nola behatuko den. Orduan, goizeko une gatazkatsuenak behatzea erabaki da; saio kolektiboa, txokoak eta batzeko unea, hain zuzen. Ondoren, fase zientifikoan, hiru esparru horietan behatutako datu guztiak bildu eta hainbat taula eta grafiko eratu dira. Lortutako emaitzen arabera, argi gelditu delarik eskolan biolentzia erabiltzea nahiko ohikoa dela; autoritarismoa, diziplina inposaketa eta boterearen erabilera bortitza. Hori dela eta, batetik garatutako lan enpirikoan eta bestetik Pikler-Lóczy eskolatze goiztiarraren hezkuntza-eredu arrakastatsuan oinarritutako hausnarketa egin da, gatazka egoeretan erabili daitezkeen baliabide nahiz esku-hartze mota kalitatezko eta egokiagoak eskaintzeko asmotan.

The importance of quantifying the economic returns to investments in aquatic resources research together with the social, environmental and institutional impacts of such investments is widely recognized among ICLARM's donors, trustees and beneficiaries. As with other Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) centers, ICLARM is being asked to provide specific accounts of the outputs of its research and their impact on farms and on fisheries, including their socioeconomic impact. Such impact information has become a necessary, though not sufficient, basis for setting priorities and allocating resources for research for the CGIAR centers. This paper discusses the types and methods of impact assessment relevant to ICLARM's work. A three-pronged assessment approach is envisaged to capture the full range of impacts: 1) ex ante assessment for research priority setting; 2) assessment prior to dissemination or adoption along with monitoring and evaluation; and 3) ex post impact assessment. It also discusses the objectives and scope for operational impact assessment of ICLARM's research.

The Mekong River is one of Asia's greatest rivers. It is the lifeblood of millions of small-scale farmers and fishers in China, Burma, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. In the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Lao PDR), the river is particularly important because for the landlocked country, the Mekong is the Sea of Laos. In southern Lao PDR, fisheries for native fish species constitute an extremely important source of subsistence protein and income for local people. It has been estimated that wild-caught fish constitute at least 90% of the protein for lowland Laotians living next to the Mekong. Despite the extreme importance of fish to the diets and economics of communities along the Mekong, the resource, and the people who depend upon it, are in danger.

In line with its mandate of poverty reduction and sustainable development, the WorldFish Center is orienting its research towards high impact scientific activity. Identifying such activities is the task of prospective impact assessment, in turn based on impact pathway analysis. The paper describes a framework for analyzing benefits from aquatic resources research, the relevant research categories, pathways to impact by category, and indicators along each pathway that can be estimated in order to quantify probable research impact.

Despite the expenditure of huge amounts of money and human effort, the Green Revolution has largely failed to benefit the vast majority of the rural poor in Africa: those smallholding farmers who sell little, if any, of what they grow and rely almost entirely upon natural soil fertility, rainfall and traditional broodstock and seed varieties. New approaches on food production and income generation in the rural areas must be found if this sector of agricultural community is to be assisted. Integrated resources management (IRM) in general, and integrated agriculture-aquaculture (IAA) in particular, may offer some solutions in cases where the classical methods of improving farm output have failed and/or been unsustainable.

The article focuses on the economic seaweed resources and production in eastern Indonesia and how the fishers in the country adjust their system in managing the resources. Particular attention is given to seaweed which can be used as materials for producing carageenan and agar; most carrageenophyte species explored in eastern Indonesia belong to the genera Kappaphycus and Eucheuma; and seaweeds that produce agar belong to families Gelidiaceae and Gracilariaceae.
