High speed trains, when crossing regions with abrupt changes in vertical stiffness of the track and/or subsoil, may generate excessive ground and track vibrations. There is an urgent need for specific analyses of this problem so as to allow reliable esimates of vibration amplitude. Full understanding of these phenomena will lead to new construction solutions and mitigation of undesirable features. In this paper analytical transient solutions of dynamic response of one-dimensional systems with sudden change of foundation stiffness are derived. Results are expressed in terms of vertical displacement. Sensitivity analysis of the response amplitude is also performed. The analytical expressions presented herein, to the authors’ knowledge, have not been published yet. Although related to one-dimensional cases, they can give useful insight into the problem. Nevertheless, in order to obtain realistic response, vehicle- rail interaction cannot be omitted. Results and conclusions are confirmed using general purpose commercial software ANSYS. In conclusion, this work contributes to a better understanding of the additional vibration phenomenon due to vertical stiffness variation, permitting better control of the train velocity and optimization of the track design.

Functionally graded composite materials can provide continuously varying properties, which distribution can vary according to a specific location within the composite. More frequently, functionally graded materials consider a through thickness variation law, which can be more or less smoother, possessing however an important characteristic which is the continuous properties variation profiles, which eliminate the abrupt stresses discontinuities found on laminated composites. This study aims to analyze the transient dynamic behavior of sandwich structures, having a metallic core and functionally graded outer layers. To this purpose, the properties of the particulate composite metal-ceramic outer layers, are estimated using Mod-Tanaka scheme and the dynamic analyses considers first order and higher order shear deformation theories implemented though kriging finite element method. The transient dynamic response of these structures is carried out through Bossak-Newmark method. The illustrative cases presented in this work, consider the influence of the shape functions interpolation domain, the properties through-thickness distribution, the influence of considering different materials, aspect ratios and boundary conditions. The Smart Grid environment allows the integration of resources of small and medium players through the use of Demand Response programs. Despite the clear advantages for the grid, the integration of consumers must be carefully done. This paper proposes a system which simulates small and medium players. The system is essential to produce tests and studies about the active participation of small and medium players in the Smart Grid environment. When comparing to similar systems, the advantages comprise the capability to deal with three types of loads – virtual, contextual and real. It can have several loads optimization modules and it can run in real time. The use of modules and the dynamic configuration of the player results in a system which can represent different players in an easy and independent way. This paper describes the system and all its capabilities.

Increased demands on the capacity of the railway network gave rise to new issues related to the dynamic response of railway tracks subjected to moving vehicles. Thus, it becomes important to evaluate the applicability of traditionally used simplified models which have a closed form solution. Regarding simplified models, transversal vibrations of a beam on a visco-elastic foundation subjected to a moving load are considered. Governing equations are obtained by Hamilton’s principle. Shear distortion, rotary inertia and effect of axial force are accounted for. The load is introduced as a time varying force moving at a constant velocity. Transversal vibrations induced by the load are solved by the normal-mode analysis. Reflected waves at the extremities of the full beam are avoided by introduction of semi-infinite elements. Firstly, the critical velocity obtained from this model is compared with results of an undamped Euler- Bernoulli formulation with zero axial force. Secondly, a finite element model in ABAQUS is examined. This article investigates the limit cycle (LC) prediction of systems with backlash by means of the describing function (DF) when using discrete fractional-order (FO) algorithms. The DF is an approximate method that gives good estimates of LCs. The implementation of FO controllers requires the use of rational approximations, but such realizations produce distinct dynamic types of behavior. This study analyzes the accuracy in the prediction of LCs, namely their amplitude and frequency, when using several different algorithms. To illustrate this problem we use FO-PID algorithms in the control of systems with backlash.

An adaptive control damping the forced vibration of a car while passing along a bumpy road is investigated. It is based on a simple kinematic description of the desired behavior of the damped system. A modified PID controller containing an approximation of Caputo’s fractional derivative suppresses the high-frequency components related to the bumps and dips, while the low frequency part of passing hills/valleys are strictly traced. Neither a complete dynamic model of the car nor ’a priori’ information on the surface of the road is needed. The adaptive control realizes this kinematic design in spite of the existence of dynamically coupled, excitable internal degrees of freedom. The method is investigated via Scicos-based simulation in the case of a paradigm. It was found that both adaptivity and fractional order derivatives are essential parts of the control that can keep the vibration of the load at bay without directly controlling its motion.

The Container Loading Problem (CLP) literature has traditionally evaluated the dynamic stability of cargo by applying two metrics to box arrangements: the mean number of boxes supporting the items excluding those placed directly on the floor (M1) and the percentage of boxes with insufficient lateral support (M2). However, these metrics, that aim to be proxies for cargo stability during transportation, fail to translate real-world cargo conditions of dynamic stability. In this paper two new performance indicators are proposed to evaluate the dynamic stability of cargo arrangements: the number of fallen boxes (NFB) and the number of boxes within the Damage Boundary Curve fragility test (NB_DBC). Using 1500 solutions for well-known problem instances found in the literature, these new performance indicators are evaluated using a physics simulation tool (StableCargo), replacing the real-world transportation by a truck with a simulation of the dynamic behaviour of container loading arrangements. Two new dynamic stability metrics that can be integrated within any container loading algorithm are also proposed. The metrics are analytical models of the proposed stability performance indicators, computed by multiple linear regression. Pearson’s r correlation coefficient was used as an evaluation parameter for the performance of the models. The extensive computational results show that the proposed metrics are better proxies for dynamic stability in the CLP than the previous widely used metrics.

The seismic assessment of the local failure modes in existing masonry buildings is currently based on the identification of the so-called local mechanisms, often associated with the out-of-plane wall behavior, whose stability is evaluated by static force-based approaches and, more recently, by some displacement-based proposals. Local mechanisms consist of kinematic chains of masonry portions, often regarded as rigid bodies, with geometric nonlinearity and concentrated nonlinearity in predefined contact regions (unilateral no-tension behavior, possible sliding with friction). In this work, the dynamic behavior of local mechanisms is simulated through multi-body dynamics, to obtain the nonlinear response with efficient time history analyses that directly take into account the characteristics of the ground motion. The amplification/filtering effects of the structure are considered within the input motion. The proposed approach is validated with experimental results of two full-scale shaking-table tests on stone masonry buildings: a sacco-stone masonry façade tested at Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil and a two-storey double-leaf masonry building tested at European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (EUCENTRE).

We have studied the cardiac chronotropic responses to the Valsalva maneuver and to dynamic exercise of twenty chronic chagasic patients with normal left ventricular function and no segmental wall abnormalities by two-dimensional echocardiogram. The absolute increase in heart rate of the patients (Δ = 21.5 ± 10 bpm, M±SD) during the maneuver was significantly diminished when compared to controls (Δ = 31.30 ± 70, M±SD, p = 0.03). The minimum heart rate (58.24 ± 8.90 vs. 62.80 ± 10, p = 0.68) and the absolute decrease in heart rate at the end of the maneuver (Δ = 38.30 ± 13 vs. Δ = 31.47 ± 17, p = 0.10) were not different from controls. The initial heart rate acceleration during dynamic exercise (Δ = 12 ± 7.55 vs. Δ = 19 ± 7.27, M±SD, p = 0.01) was also diminished, but the heart rate recovery during the first ten seconds was more prominent in the sero-positive patients (Median: 14, Interquartile range: (9.75-17.50 vs. 5(0-8.75, p = 0.001). The serum levels of muscarinic cardiac auto-antibodies were significantly higher in the chagasic patients (Median: 34.58, Interquartile Range: 17-46.5, Optical Density) than in controls (Median: 0, Interquartile Range: 0-22.25, p = 0.001) and correlated significantly and directly (r = 0.68, p = 0.002) with early heart rate recovery during dynamic exercise. The results of this investigation indirectly suggest that, the cardiac muscarinic auto-antibodies may have positive agonist effects on parasympathetic heart rate control of chagasic patients.

The study of chemical diffusion in biological tissues is a research field of high importance and with application in many clinical, research and industrial areas. The evaluation of diffusion and viscosity properties of chemicals in tissues is necessary to characterize treatments or inclusion of preservatives in tissues or organs for low temperature conservation. Recently, we have demonstrated experimentally that the diffusion properties and dynamic viscosity of sugars and alcohols can be evaluated from optical measurements. Our studies were performed in skeletal muscle, but our results have revealed that the same methodology can be used with other tissues and different chemicals. Considering the significant number of studies that can be made with this method, it becomes necessary to turn data processing and calculation easier. With this objective, we have developed a software application that integrates all processing and calculations, turning the researcher work easier and faster. Using the same experimental data that previously was used to estimate the diffusion and viscosity of glucose in skeletal muscle, we have repeated the calculations with the new application. Comparing between the results obtained with the new application and with previous independent routines we have demonstrated great similarity and consequently validated the application. This new tool is now available to be used in similar research to obtain the diffusion properties of other chemicals in different tissues or organs.

Context-aware recommendation of personalised tourism resources is possible because of personal mobile devices and powerful data filtering algorithms. The devices contribute with computing capabilities, on board sensors, ubiquitous Internet access and continuous user monitoring, whereas the filtering algorithms provide the ability to match the profile (interests and the context) of the tourist against a large knowledge bases of tourism resources. While, in terms of technology, personal mobile devices can gather user-related information, including the user context and access multiple data sources, the creation and maintenance of an updated knowledge base of tourism-related resources requires a collaborative approach due to the heterogeneity, volume and dynamic nature of the resources. The current PhD thesis aims to contribute to the solution of this problem by adopting a Crowdsourcing approach for the collaborative maintenance of the knowledge base of resources, Trust and Reputation for the validation of uploaded resources as well as publishers, Big Data for user profiling and context-aware filtering algorithms for the personalised recommendation of tourism resources.

Face à estagnação da tecnologia uniprocessador registada na passada década, aos principais fabricantes de microprocessadores encontraram na tecnologia multi-core a resposta `as crescentes necessidades de processamento do mercado. Durante anos, os desenvolvedores de software viram as suas aplicações acompanhar os ganhos de performance conferidos por cada nova geração de processadores sequenciais, mas `a medida que a capacidade de processamento escala em função do número de processadores, a computação sequencial tem de ser decomposta em várias partes concorrentes que possam executar em paralelo, para que possam utilizar as unidades de processamento adicionais e completar mais rapidamente. A programação paralela implica um paradigma completamente distinto da programação sequencial. Ao contrário dos computadores sequenciais tipificados no modelo de Von Neumann, a heterogeneidade de arquiteturas paralelas requer modelos de programação paralela que abstraiam os programadores dos detalhes da arquitectura e simplifiquem o desenvolvimento de aplicações concorrentes. Os modelos de programação paralela mais populares incitam os programadores a identificar instruções concorrentes na sua lógica de programação, e a especificá-las sob a forma de tarefas que possam ser atribuídas a processadores distintos para executarem em simultâneo. Estas tarefas são tipicamente lançadas durante a execução, e atribuídas aos processadores pelo motor de execução subjacente. Como os requisitos de processamento costumam ser variáveis, e não são conhecidos a priori, o mapeamento de tarefas para processadores tem de ser determinado dinamicamente, em resposta a alterações imprevisíveis dos requisitos de execução. `A medida que o volume da computação cresce, torna-se cada vez menos viável garantir as suas restrições temporais em plataformas uniprocessador. Enquanto os sistemas de tempo real se começam a adaptar ao paradigma de computação paralela, há uma crescente aposta em integrar execuções de tempo real com aplicações interativas no mesmo hardware, num mundo em que a tecnologia se torna cada vez mais pequena, leve, ubíqua, e portável. Esta integração requer soluções de escalonamento que simultaneamente garantam os requisitos temporais das tarefas de tempo real e mantenham um nível aceitável de QoS para as restantes execuções. Para tal, torna-se imperativo que as aplicações de tempo real paralelizem, de forma a minimizar os seus tempos de resposta e maximizar a utilização dos recursos de processamento. Isto introduz uma nova dimensão ao problema do escalonamento, que tem de responder de forma correcta a novos requisitos de execução imprevisíveis e rapidamente conjeturar o mapeamento de tarefas que melhor beneficie os critérios de performance do sistema. A técnica de escalonamento baseado em servidores permite reservar uma fração da capacidade de processamento para a execução de tarefas de tempo real, e assegurar que os efeitos de latência na sua execução não afectam as reservas estipuladas para outras execuções. No caso de tarefas escalonadas pelo tempo de execução máximo, ou tarefas com tempos de execução variáveis, torna-se provável que a largura de banda estipulada não seja consumida por completo. Para melhorar a utilização do sistema, os algoritmos de partilha de largura de banda (capacity-sharing) doam a capacidade não utilizada para a execução de outras tarefas, mantendo as garantias de isolamento entre servidores. Com eficiência comprovada em termos de espaço, tempo, e comunicação, o mecanismo de work-stealing tem vindo a ganhar popularidade como metodologia para o escalonamento de tarefas com paralelismo dinâmico e irregular. O algoritmo p-CSWS combina escalonamento baseado em servidores com capacity-sharing e work-stealing para cobrir as necessidades de escalonamento dos sistemas abertos de tempo real. Enquanto o escalonamento em servidores permite partilhar os recursos de processamento sem interferências a nível dos atrasos, uma nova política de work-stealing que opera sobre o mecanismo de capacity-sharing aplica uma exploração de paralelismo que melhora os tempos de resposta das aplicações e melhora a utilização do sistema. Esta tese propõe uma implementação do algoritmo p-CSWS para o Linux. Em concordância com a estrutura modular do escalonador do Linux, ´e definida uma nova classe de escalonamento que visa avaliar a aplicabilidade da heurística p-CSWS em circunstâncias reais. Ultrapassados os obstáculos intrínsecos `a programação da kernel do Linux, os extensos testes experimentais provam que o p-CSWS ´e mais do que um conceito teórico atrativo, e que a exploração heurística de paralelismo proposta pelo algoritmo beneficia os tempos de resposta das aplicações de tempo real, bem como a performance e eficiência da plataforma multiprocessador.
