Multi-layered materials have been made from Cu-Fe with approximately equal volume fractions using the Accumulated Roll Bonding (ARB) technique with less than 1 μm thickness of the individual layers. The so-obtained multi-layers have been subjected to deformation by cold rolling to 25, 50, 75, 87 and 93% reduction in thickness. A detailed characterization has been carried out using X-ray diffraction (line profile analysis and texture measurement) and electron (scanning and transmission) microscopy. It has been found that Fe layers are disintegrated whereas Cu retains its continuity within a layer. Microstructural Characterization from X-Ray Line profile Analysis (XRDLPA) through Variance Method reveals that large amount of strain is initially carried by Cu layers during deformation. In the Cu-Fe layer, the texture is comparatively weaker in Cu layer and strong in Fe layers. Brass Component increases up to 75% reduction and then decreases, while the ratio of Cu/S and Bs/S remains almost constant through out the deformation. After 50% reduction, dynamic recovery is predominant as indicated by the increase in the amount of low angle grain boundaries and decrease in dislocation density. The presence of R component indicates continuous dynamic recovery and recrystallization (CDRR) at the advanced stage of deformation.

Competition theory predicts that local communities should consist of species that are more dissimilar than expected by chance. We find a strikingly different pattern in a multicontinent data set (55 presence-absence matrices from 24 locations) on the composition of mixed-species bird flocks, which are important sub-units of local bird communities the world over. By using null models and randomization tests followed by meta-analysis, we find the association strengths of species in flocks to be strongly related to similarity in body size and foraging behavior and higher for congeneric compared with noncongeneric species pairs. Given the local spatial scales of our individual analyses, differences in the habitat preferences of species are unlikely to have caused these association patterns; the patterns observed are most likely the outcome of species interactions. Extending group-living and social-information-use theory to a heterospecific context, we discuss potential behavioral mechanisms that lead to positive interactions among similar species in flocks, as well as ways in which competition costs are reduced. Our findings highlight the need to consider positive interactions along with competition when seeking to explain community assembly.

We report on the single crystal growth of 50% Sr and Y doped multiferroic DyMnO3 using optical floating zone technique. A comparison of the effect of growth ambience and of chemical substitution on the crystal structure of DyMnO3 is attempted. It is observed that DyMnO3 adopts Pm3m cubic structure with 50% Sr doping whereas with 50% Y doping, the crystal structure is hexagonal P6(3)cm. Orthorhombic Pnma structure is adopted by DyMnO3 when grown in air, whereas hexagonal P6(3)cm structure is obtained when grown under the ambience of argon. The structural polymorphism is discussed in terms of difference in ionic sizes of Sr, Y and Dy, comparable Gibbs free energies and coordination schemes of surrounding oxygens for hexagonal and orthorhombic structures of DyMnO3. Hot deformation behavior of a hypoeutectic Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B alloy in (alpha + beta) phase field is investigated in the present study with special reference to flow response, kinetics and microstructural evolution. For a comparison, the base alloy Ti-6Al-4V was also studied under identical conditions. Dynamic recovery of alpha phase occurs at low temperatures while softening due to globularization and/or dynamic recrystallization dominates at high temperatures irrespective of boron addition. Microstructural features for both the alloys display bending and kinking of alpha lamellae for near alpha test temperatures. Unlike Ti-6Al-4V, no sign of instability formation was observed in Ti-6Al-4V-0.1B for any deformation condition except for cavitation around TiB particles, due to deformation incompatibility and strain accumulation at the particle-matrix interface. The absence of macroscopic instabilities and early initiation of softening mechanisms as a result of boron addition has been attributed to microstructural features (e.g. refined prior beta grain and alpha colony size, absence of grain boundary alpha layer, presence of TiB particles at prior beta boundaries, etc.) of the respective alloys prior to deformation. Palladium catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of hydrazones with aryl halides in the absence of external ligand is reported. The versatility of this coupling reaction is demonstrated in showcasing the selectivity of coupling reaction in the presence of hydroxyl and amine functional groups. This method allows synthesizing a variety of heterocyclic compounds, which are difficult to access from other traditional methods and are not synthesized by employing similar coupling reactions. Application of the present methodology is validated in tandem reaction of ketones to the corresponding substituted olefins in a single pot experiment.

This study reports the in vitro compatibility of muscle cells (C2C12 mouse myoblast cell line) with the transparent poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) hydrogels and the results are explained on the basis of surface wettability, crystallinity, and nanoscale elastic stiffness property. Nanoindentation was carried out with a maximum load of 100 mu N for all the hydrogel compositions and the properties such as elastic stiffness, hardness and total work done during indentation were computed. The difference in cell viability as well as adhesion of cultured myoblast cells on the investigated hydrogel substrates were discussed in reference to the difference in the nanoscale elastic properties, crystallinity, and surface wettability. An important result has been that both elastic stiffness and surface wettability synergistically influence myoblast viability/adhesion on PVA hydrogels. (c) 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Nucleotide biosynthesis plays a key role in cell survival and cell proliferation. Thymidylate kinase is an enzyme that catalyses the conversion of dTMP to dTDP using ATP-Mg2+ as a phosphoryl-donor group. This enzyme is present at the junction of the de novo and salvage pathways; thus, any inhibitor designed against it will result in cell death. This highlights the importance of this enzyme as a drug target. Thymidylate kinase from the extremely thermophilic organism Thermus thermophilus HB8 has been expressed, purified and crystallized using the microbatch method. The crystals diffracted to a resolution of 1.83 angstrom and belonged to the orthorhombic space group P2(1)2(1)2(1), with unit-cell parameters a = 39.50, b = 80.29, c = 122.55 angstrom. Preliminary studies revealed the presence of a dimer in the asymmetric unit with a Matthews coefficient (V-M) of 2.18 angstrom(3) Da(-1).

Poly{(N,N-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate]-co-(methyl methacrylate)} copolymers of various compositions were synthesized by reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization at 70 degrees C in N,N-dimethylformamide. The polymer molecular weights and molecular weight distributions were obtained from size exclusion chromatography, and they indicated the controlled nature of the RAFT polymerizations; the polydispersity indices are in the range 1.11.3. The reactivity ratios of N,N-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) and methyl methacrylate (MMA) (rDMAEMA = 0.925 and rMMA = 0.854) were computed by the extended KelenTudos method at high conversions, using compositions obtained from 1H NMR. The pH- and temperature-sensitive behaviour were studied in aqueous solution to confirm dual responsiveness of these copolymers. The thermal properties of the copolymers with various compositions were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis. The kinetics of thermal degradation were determined by Friedmann and Chang techniques to evaluate various parameters such as the activation energy, the order and the frequency factor. In this paper, we study duty cycling and power management in a network of energy harvesting sensor (EHS) nodes. We consider a one-hop network, where K EHS nodes send data to a destination over a wireless fading channel. The goal is to find the optimum duty cycling and power scheduling across the nodes that maximizes the average sum data rate, subject to energy neutrality at each node. We adopt a two-stage approach to simplify the problem. In the inner stage, we solve the problem of optimal duty cycling of the nodes, subject to the short-term power constraint set by the outer stage. The outer stage sets the short-term power constraints on the inner stage to maximize the long-term expected sum data rate, subject to long-term energy neutrality at each node. Albeit suboptimal, our solutions turn out to have a surprisingly simple form: the duty cycle allotted to each node by the inner stage is simply the fractional allotted power of that node relative to the total allotted power. The sum power allotted is a clipped version of the sum harvested power across all the nodes. The average sum throughput thus ultimately depends only on the sum harvested power and its statistics. We illustrate the performance improvement offered by the proposed solution compared to other naive schemes via Monte-Carlo simulations.

Success in the advancement of thermoacoustic field led the researchers to develop the thermoacoustic engines which found its applications in various fields such as refrigeration, gas mixture separation, natural gas liquefaction, and cryogenics. The objective of this study is to design and fabricate the twin thermoacoustic heat engine (TAHE) producing the acoustic waves with high resonance frequencies which is used to drive a thermoacoustic refrigerator efficiently by the influence of geometrical parameters and working fluids. Twin TAHE has gained significant attention due to the production of high intensity acoustic waves than single TAHE. In order to drive an efficient thermoacoustic refrigerator, a twin thermoacoustic heat engine is built up and its performance are analysed by varying the resonator length and working fluid. The performance is measured in terms of onset temperature difference, resonance frequency and pressure amplitude of the oscillations generated from twin TAHE. The simulation is performed using free software DeltaEC, from LANL, USA. The simulated DeltaEC results are compared with experimental results and the deviations are found within +10%.

The way in which basal tractions, associated with mantle convection, couples with the lithosphere is a fundamental problem in geodynamics. A successful lithosphere-mantle coupling model for the Earth will satisfy observations of plate motions, intraplate stresses, and the plate boundary zone deformation. We solve the depth integrated three-dimensional force balance equations in a global finite element model that takes into account effects of both topography and shallow lithosphere structure as well as tractions originating from deeper mantle convection. The contribution from topography and lithosphere structure is estimated by calculating gravitational potential energy differences. The basal tractions are derived from a fully dynamic flow model with both radial and lateral viscosity variations. We simultaneously fit stresses and plate motions in order to delineate a best-fit lithosphere-mantle coupling model. We use both the World Stress Map and the Global Strain Rate Model to constrain the models. We find that a strongly coupled model with a stiff lithosphere and 3-4 orders of lateral viscosity variations in the lithosphere are best able to match the observational constraints. Our predicted deviatoric stresses, which are dominated by contribution from mantle tractions, range between 20-70 MPa. The best-fitting coupled models predict strain rates that are consistent with observations. That is, the intraplate areas are nearly rigid whereas plate boundaries and some other continental deformation zones display high strain rates. Comparison of mantle tractions and surface velocities indicate that in most areas tractions are driving, although in a few regions, including western North America, tractions are resistive. We present the selective sensing of multiple transition metal ions in water using a synthetic single probe. The probe is made up of pyrene and pyridine as signaling and interacting moiety, respectively. The sensor showed different responses toward metal ions just by varying the medium of detection. In organic solvent (acetonitrile), the probe showed selective detection of Hg2+ ion. In water, the fluorescence quenching was observed with three metal ions, Cu2+, Hg2+, and Ni2+. Further, just by varying the surface charge on the micellar aggregates, the probe could detect and discriminate the above-mentioned three different toxic metal ions appropriately. In neutral micelles (Brij 58), the probe showed a selective interaction with Hg2+ ion as observed in acetonitrile medium. However, in anionic micellar medium (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS), the probe showed changes with both Cu2+ and Ni2+. under UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The discrimination between these two ions was achieved by recording their emission spectra, where it showed selective quenching with Cu2+.

In animal populations, the constraints of energy and time can cause intraspecific variation in foraging behaviour. The proximate developmental mediators of such variation are often the mechanisms underlying perception and associative learning. Here, experience-dependent changes in foraging behaviour and their consequences were investigated in an urban population of free-ranging dogs, Canis familiaris by continually challenging them with the task of food extraction from specially crafted packets. Typically, males and pregnant/lactating (PL) females extracted food using the sophisticated `gap widening' technique, whereas non-pregnant/non-lactating (NPNL) females, the relatively underdeveloped `rip opening' technique. In contrast to most males and PL females (and a few NPNL females) that repeatedly used the gap widening technique and improved their performance in food extraction with experience, most NPNL females (and a few males and PL females) non-preferentially used the two extraction techniques and did not improve over successive trials. Furthermore, the ability of dogs to sophisticatedly extract food was positively related to their ability to improve their performance with experience. Collectively, these findings demonstrate that factors such as sex and physiological state can cause differences among individuals in the likelihood of learning new information and hence, in the rate of resource acquisition and monopolization.

The role of crystallite size and clustering in influencing the stability of the structures of a large tetragonality ferroelectric system 0.6BiFeO(3)-0.4PbTiO(3) was investigated. The system exhibits cubic phase for a crystallite size similar to 25 nm, three times larger than the critical size reported for one of its end member PbTiO3. With increased degree of clustering for the same average crystallite size, partial stabilization of the ferroelectric tetragonal phase takes place. The results suggest that clustering helps in reducing the depolarization energy without the need for increasing the crystallite size of free particles.

In the present study, ZnFe2O4 nanoparticles were synthesized by the chemical co-precipitation followed by calcinations at 473 and 673K for 4h. Particle sizes obtained were 4 and 6nm for the calcination temperatures of 473 and 673K, respectively. To study the origin of system's low temperature spin dynamic behaviour, temperature dependence of susceptibility was investigated as a function of particle size and frequency. Slight increase in the grain size from 4nm at 473K to 6nm at 673K has led to a peak shift of temperature dependence of susceptibility measured at a constant frequency of 400Hz. Temperature dependence of at different frequencies also resulted in peak shift. Relaxation time dependence of peak temperature obeys a power law, which provides the fitting parameters within the range of superparamagnetic nature of the particles. Further, dependence of relaxation time and peak temperature obeys VogelFulcher law rather than NeelBrown equation demonstrating that the particles follow the behaviour of superparamagnetism of slightly interacting system. Spinlattice, T-1 and spinspin, T-2 relaxivity of proton of the water molecule in the presence of chitosan-coated superparamagnetic ZnFe2O4 nanoparticle yields the values of 0.002 and 0.360s(1)perppm.
