An attempt is made to study the Einstein relation for the diffusivity-to-mobility ratio (DMR) under crossed fields' configuration in nonlinear optical materials on the basis of a newly formulated electron dispersion law by incorporating the crystal field in the Hamiltonian and including the anisotropies of the effective electron mass and the spin-orbit splitting constants within the framework of kp formalisms. The corresponding results for III-V, ternary and quaternary compounds form a special case of our generalized analysis. The DMR has also been investigated for II-VI and stressed materials on the basis of various appropriate dispersion relations. We have considered n-CdGeAs2, n-Hg1-xCdxTe, n-In1-xGaxAsyP1-y lattice matched to InP, p-CdS and stressed n-InSb materials as examples. The DMR also increases with increasing electric field and the natures of oscillations are totally band structure dependent with different numerical values. It has been observed that the DMR exhibits oscillatory dependences with inverse quantizing magnetic field and carrier degeneracy due to the Subhnikov-de Haas effect. An experimental method of determining the DMR for degenerate materials in the present case has been suggested. (C) 2010 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Using the configuration-interaction approach, we show that various core-level spectroscopic observations on the high-Tc superconducting oxides can be consistently described in terms of mixing between d9 and d10 configurations, with a negligible amount of the d8 (Cu3+) state. From our analysis of the existing experimental data, we provide evidence of a wide and continuous valence transition in these systems as a function of temperature. The changes in the hybridization strengths deduced here are indicative of structural modifications of the square-planar CuO4 clusters with decreasing temperature.

Friction force generated in lubricated cutting of steel is experimentally estimated by recording the tangential force experienced by the spherical face of a pin rubbing against a freshly cut surface. The pin and the cutting tool are both submerged in the lubricant and the pin is situated on the cut-track to record the force. The recording shows an instantaneous achievement of a peak in the force curve followed by a decline in time to a steady state value. The peak and not the steady state friction was found to be sensitive to the structure of the hydrocarbon and addition of additive to the oil. The configuration was designed and tested to demonstrate the influence of a reaction film which develops during cutting, on cutting tool friction. Given the strong correlation between the peak friction and the existence of a tribofilm in the cutting zone, the configuration is used to determine the lower limit of a cutting speed regime, which marks the initiation of lubricant starvation, in cutting of steel using an emulsion as a cutting fluid. Fluorescence and stopped-flow spectrophotometric studies on three plant lectins fromPsophocarpus tetragonolobus (winged bean),Glycine max (soybean) andArtocarpus integrifolia (jack fruit) have been studied usingN-dansylgalactosamine as a fluorescent ligand. The best monosaccharide for the winged bean agglutinin I (WBA I) and soybean (SBA) is Me-agrGalNAc and for jack fruit agglutinin (JFA) is Me-agrGal. Examination of the percentage enhancement and association constants (1.51×106, 6.56×106 and 4.17×105 M–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) suggests that the combining regions of the lectins SBA and WBA I are apolar whereas that of JFA is polar. Thermodynamic parameters obtained for the binding of several monosaccharides to these lectins are enthalpically favourable. The binding of monosaccharides to these lectins suggests that the-OH groups at C-1, C-2, C-4 and C-6 in thed-galactose configuration are important loci for interaction with these lectins. An important finding is that the JFA binds specifically to Galß1-3GaINAc with much higher affinity than the other disaccharides which are structurally and topographically similar. The results of stopped-flow spectrometry on the binding ofN-dansylgalactosamine to these lectins are consistent with a bimolecular single step mechanism. The association rate constants (2.4×105, 1.3×104, and 11.7×105 M–1 sec–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) obtained are several orders of magnitude slower than the ones expected for diffusion controlled reactions. The dissociation rate constants (0.2, 3.2×10–2, 83.3 sec–1 for SBA, WBA I and JFA, respectively) obtained for the dissociation ofN-dansylgalactosamine from its lectin complex are slowest for SBA and WBA I when compared with any other lectin-ligand dissociation process.

A new case of the uncommon cis-trans enantiomerism is presented. The titled anhydride adducts were prepared in good yields by the known reaction of three 6-arylfulvenes with maleic anhydride (aryl = phenyl, p-tolyl and p-anisyl). The exo adducts were converted to the corresponding imides by reaction with (1S)-1-(naphth-1-yl)ethylamine in similar to 80% yields, and the resulting diastereomeric imides separated by silica gel column chromatography. They were hydrolysed and recyclised to the chiral anhydrides, in `one-pot' with 10% NaOH-EtOH, followed by treatment with 2 M HCl, in similar to 40% yields. The titled anhydrides were thus obtained in homochiral form, in enantiomeric purities (generally) of similar to 90% as indicated by chiral HPLC. The chiral anhydrides were also converted to the corresponding imides (presumably stereospecifically), by treatment with ammonia solution in excellent yields. The crystal structure of one of the above diastereomeric imides (derived from 6-phenylfulvene) was determined, and based on the known (S)-configuration of the naphthylethylamine moiety, the `configurations' of the original anhydride adducts were assigned. A new approach for describing dislocations and other topological defects in crystals, based on the density wave theory of Ramakrishnan and Yussouff is presented. Quantitative calculations are discussed in brief for the order parameter profiles, the atomic configuration and the free energy of a screw dislocation with Burgers vector b = (a/2, a/2,a/2 ) in a bcc solid. Our results for the free energy of the dislocation in a crystal of sizeR, when expressed as (λb 2/4π) ln (αR/|b|) whereλ is the shear elastic constant, yield, for example, the valueα ⋍ 1·85 for sodium at its freezing temperature (371°K). The density distribution in the presence of the dislocation shows that the dislocation core has a columnar character. To our knowledge, this study represents the first calculation of dislocation structure, including the core, within the framework of an order parameter theory incorporating thermal effects.

The electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) of ternary oxides of Cu(II) has been studied between 4.2 and 300 K. The systems include those with 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions (such as Ln2CuO4, Sr2CuO2Cl2, Sr2CuO3 and Ca2CuO3) or 90 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions (such as Y2Cu2O5 or BaCuO2) as well as those in which the Cu2+ ions are isolated (such as Y2BaCuO5, La1.8Ba1.2Cu0.9O4.8 and Bi2CuO4). The change in the EPR susceptibility as a function of temperature is compared with that of the DC magnetic susceptibility. Compounds with extended 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions which have a low susceptibility also do not give EPR signals below room temperature. For compounds such as Ca2CuO3 with one-dimensional 180 degrees Cu-O-Cu interactions a weak EPR signal is found the temperature dependence of which is very different from that of the DC susceptibility. For Y2BaCuO5 as well as for La1.8Ba1.2Cu0.9O4.8 the EPR susceptibility as well as its temperature variation are comparable with those of the static susceptibility near room temperature but very different at low temperatures. Bi2CuO4 also shows a similar behaviour. In contrast, for Y2Cu2O5, in which the copper ions have a very distorted nonsquare-planar configuration, the EPR and the static susceptibility show very similar temperature dependences. In general, compounds in which the copper ions have a square-planar geometry give no EPR signal in the ground state (0 K) while those with a distortion from square-planar geometry do give a signal. The results are analysed in the light of recent MS Xalpha calculations on CuO46- square-planar clusters with various Cu-O distances as well as distortions. It is suggested that in square-planar geometry the ground state has an unpaired electron in anionic orbitals which is EPR inactive. Competing interactions from other cations, an increase in Cu-O distance or distortions from square-planar geometry stabilise another state which has considerably more Cu 3d character. These states are EPR active. Both these states, however, are magnetic. For isolated CuO46- clusters the magnetic interactions seem to involve only the states which have mainly anionic character.

The design and analysis of a coplanar capacitive fed microstrip antenna suspended above the ground plane is presented. It is demonstrated that the proposed approach can be used for designing antennas with impedance bandwidth of about 50% and a good gain to operate in various microwave bands. The model of the antenna incorporates the capacitive feed strip which is fed by a coaxial probe using equivalent circuit approach, and matches simulation and experimental results. The capacitive feed strip used here is basically a rectangular microstrip capacitor formed from a truncated microstrip transmission line and all its open ends are represented by terminal or edge capacitances. The error analysis was carried out for validity of the model for different design parameters. The antenna configuration can be used where unidirectional radiation patterns are required over a wide bandwidth.

Quantum mechanical calculations at all valence complete neglect of differential overlap (CNDO/2) and self-consistent charge extend Huckel (SCC-EH) and the Pi electron Pariser-Parr-Pople with limited configuration interaction (PPP-LCI) levels of approximation have been accomplished for monothiobiuret and dithiobiuret. From the calculated results, a discussion of the electronic structure, photoelectron and electronic spectra and the conformational stability are given. The electronic and1H nmr spectra are also reported. A trans-cis-CONHCS-structure is found to be the stable conformation for monothiobiuret consistent with other evidences.

The torsional potential functions Vt(phi) and Vt(psi) around single bonds N--C alpha and C alpha--C, which can be used in conformational studies of oligopeptides, polypeptides and proteins, have been derived, using crystal structure data of 22 globular proteins, fitting the observed distribution in the (phi, psi)-plane with the value of Vtot(phi, psi), using the Boltzmann distribution. The averaged torsional potential functions, obtained from various amino acid residues in L-configuration, are Vt(phi) = 1.0 cos (phi + 60 degrees); Vt(psi) = 0.5 cos (psi + 60 degrees) - 1.0 cos (2 psi + 30 degrees) - 0.5 cos (3 psi + 30 degrees). The dipeptide energy maps Vtot(phi, psi) obtained using these functions, instead of the normally accepted torsional functions, were found to explain various observations, such as the absence of the left-handed alpha helix and the C7 conformation, and the relatively high density of points near the line psi = 0 degrees. These functions derived from observational data on protein structures, will, it is hoped, explain various previously unexplained facts in polypeptide conformation.

Reaction of [(eta-6-p-cymene)RuCl(L star)] with AgClO4 in Me2CO gives a perchlorate complex which on subsequent treatment with PPh3, gamma-picoline or Cl- yields adducts showing that there can be retention as well as inversion of configuration at the metal centre. The (R)Ru,(S)C absolute configurations of the chiral centres in the triphenylphosphine adduct have been established by an X-ray diffraction study [HL star, (S)-alpha-methylbenzylsalicylaldimine]. The CD spectral study reveals that there is an inversion of configuration during formation of the PPh3 adduct.

An energy method is used in order to derive the non-linear equations of motion of a smart flapping wing. Flapping wing is actuated from the root by a PZT unimorph in the piezofan configuration. Dynamic characteristics of the wing, having the same size as dragonfly Aeshna Multicolor, are analyzed using numerical simulations. It is shown that flapping angle variations of the smart flapping wing are similar to the actual dragonfly wing for a specific feasible voltage. An unsteady aerodynamic model based on modified strip theory is used to obtain the aerodynamic forces. It is found that the smart wing generates sufficient lift to support its own weight and carry a small payload. It is therefore a potential candidate for flapping wing of micro air vehicles.

This thesis is primarily concerned with the enzyme- catalysed synthesis of sulfoxides using reductase and dioxygenase enzymes. Chapter 1 provides an introduction to the topic of redox chemistry with particular emphasis on the application of reductase and dioxygenase enzymes in organosulfur chemistry. Earlier literature methods for the production of enantiopure sulfoxides are reviewed. A brief discussion of the methods used for the determination of enantiomeric excess and absolute configuration is provided. Chapter 2 contains results obtained using a range of whole-cell bacteria each using a dimethyl sulfoxide reductase enzyme. The synthesis of a series of racemic sulfoxides and the development of appropriate CSPHPLC analytical methods is discussed. Kinetic resolutions of a series of sulfoxides have been achieved. Chapter 3 contains a presentation of results using dioxygenase enzymes as biocatalysts for the asymmetric sulfoxidation of dialkyl sulfoxides including thioacetal sulfoxides. A new range of monosulfoxides, cis-dihydrodiols and cis- dihydrodiol sulfoxides have been isolated in enantiopure form. Chapter 4 is focussed on the application of chiral sulfoxides in synthesis. A new chemoenzymatic route to diol sulfoxide enantiomers and the derived enantiopure phenols and catechols is discussed. The application of chemically synthesised sulfoxide enantiomers in the production of hydroxy sulfoxides is reported. Chapter 5 provides a full experimental section where the synthesis of sulfides and racemic sulfoxides is included. The methods used in the isolation and characterisation of bioproducts from the biotransformation are discussed and full experimental details given.

In this paper, we present an algebraic method to study and design spatial parallel manipulators that demonstrate isotropy in the force and moment distributions. We use the force and moment transformation matrices separately, and derive conditions for their isotropy individually as well as in combination. The isotropy conditions are derived in closed-form in terms of the invariants of the quadratic forms associated with these matrices. The formulation is applied to a class of Stewart platform manipulator, and a multi-parameter family of isotropic manipulators is identified analytically. We show that it is impossible to obtain a spatially isotropic configuration within this family. We also compute the isotropic configurations of an existing manipulator and demonstrate a procedure for designing the manipulator for isotropy at a given configuration.
