The Albian/Cenomanian strata in Hole 530A are organically richer than are the post-Cenomanian strata. Organic matter is thermally immature and appears to be of dominantly marine origin with either variable levels of oxidation or variable amounts of terrestrial input. Geochemical data alone cannot establish whether the black shales present in Hole 530A represent deposition within a stagnant basin or within an expanded oxygen-minimum layer

Clay mineralogical and inorganic geochemical data from the Campanian to the Pleistocene provide information bearing on the evolution of both continental and marine paleoenvironments in the Walvis Ridge area. (1) Alteration processes of basalts occurred under subaerial conditions during the Campanian and Maestrichtian and were virtually absent in deeper marine environments. (2) Strong tectonic effects were present during the Campanian and persisted until the early Eocene. (3) Subsidence of this part of the Walvis Ridge became important during the late Maestrichtian and continued into the Paleocene and Eocene. (4) The influence of global climatic cooling was evident from the late Eocene on. (5) Modification of oceanic circulation and the increasing influence of surface and deep water masses on the sedimentation characterized the Cenozoic.

Accumulation rates for the five sites drilled during Leg 74 of the Glomar Challenger are presented on a common timescale based on calibration of datum levels to paleomagnetic records in Leg 74 sediments for the Paleogene, and a new compilation by Berggren et al. (1985), for the Neogene, and using the seafloor-spreading magnetic anomaly timescale of Kent (1985). We present data on accumulation of total sediment, of foraminifers, of the noncarbonate portion, and of fish teeth that give a history of productivity, winnowing, carbonate dissolution, and nonbiogenic input to what was then a part of the South Atlantic at about 30 deg S.

CH4 and CO2 species in pore fluids from slope sediments off Guatemala show extreme 13C-enrichment (d13C of -41 and +38 per mil, respectively) compared with the typical degree of 13C-enrichment in pore fluids of DSDP sediments (d13C of - 60 and + 10 per mil). These unusual isotopic compositions are believed to result from microbial decomposition of organic matter, and possibly from additional isotopic fractionation associated with the formation of gas hydrates. In addition to the isotopic fractionation displayed by CH4 and CO2, the pore water exhibits a systematic increase in d18O with decrease in chlorinity. As against seawater d18O values of 0 and chlorinity of 19 per mil, the water collected from decomposed gas hydrate from Hole 570 had a d18O of + 3.0 per mil and chlorinity of 9.5 per mil. The isotopic compositions of pore-fluid constituents change gradually with depth in Hole 568 and discontinuously with depth in Hole 570.

The geotechnical characteristics of 22 sediment samples from Leg 84 sites were studied in an effort to associate these with processes active along the Middle America slope and with sedimentation mechanisms. Geotechnical properties measured include water content, porosity, bulk density, Atterberg limits, consolidation characteristics, permeability, and vane shear strength. A majority of samples obtained from Sites 565, 568, and 570 show significant disturbance resulting from degassing. This disturbance apparently results in underconsolidation, although other mechanisms such as excess pore pressures generated from the subduction process can also contribute to this state. Overconsolidated sediments were found at Sites 565, 566, and 569. The overconsolidated sediments at Sites 565 and 569 may result from downslope transport mechanisms rearranging and stressing the sediment mass under consideration. The sediment condition at Site 566 is probably a result of eroded overburden: an estimated 87 m of overlying sediments may have been removed. Geotechnical and permeability relationships with depth are consistent with those found for other hemipelagic sediments of silty clay to clayey silt textures.

Mineralogical identification, glass chemistry, and instrumental neutron activation analyses of Quaternary volcanic ash layers from Leg 67 Holes 496, 497, and 499 are used to correlate the drill holes and on-land sources. We have identified two units at Hole 496 that correspond to the 23,000-yr.-old Pinos Altos ash (Samples 496-3-4, 55-57 cm and 496-3-5, 74-76 cm); the 84,000-yr.-old Los Chocoyos ash corresponds with Sample 496-5-4, 134-146 cm, but this latter correlation is less certain.

Fifty-nine samples from the basal 110 m of DSDP Hole 612 (United States Atlantic Margin) were analyzed for palynomorph content. In total, 84 species and subspecies of dinoflagellate cysts were recorded which, on comparison with published data and shipboard analyses, indicate a Campanian to Maestrichtian age for this part of the succession. The Campanian/Maestrichtian contact is taken to occur in the upper part of Core 612-69.
