Mafia waters in the western Indian Ocean on the east coast of Africa is a natural attractive area for fishing. It has extensive coral beds which harbour good fish life and attracts sport fishery in the area. About 12 commercially important fishes listed are caught by sports fishermen. The data indicates that this area can become an attractive centre for sports fishery almost throughout the year with peak season from November to February. Long-term planning of the fishery is necessary. The conservation measures should be evolved and gan fishing, dynamiting or any other kind of distructive fishing should be prohibited. This area has natural potential to become a sports fishing centre in the future and a great attraction for tourists and anglers.

I am particularly happy to write this short forward introducing the report of the Fisheries Department for the year 1972. The Fisheries Department of the Ministry of Animal Resources is responsible for directing the development, utilization and scientific management of the fisheries resources of Uganda. This ensures that our people continue to benefit from this resource not only as a revenue earner but also as a constant source of the much needed animal protein.

Feeding habits of many animals have been used widely in animal classifications. This is so, because the type of diet an organism requires demands structural specialisation which will utilise the available resource. Many animals may however have many structural modifications to enable them to be described as omnivourous or generalised feeders such as H. empodisma and H. riponianus (GREENWOOD 1960) which may show varying degrees of structural and adaptational intermediacy between two trophic groups. Generally, however, the diet of many animals including fish changes as the animal grow larger. The change in structural modifications is usually correlated with changes in the diet. In fishes the change may involve change from tricuspid to biscuspid and finally to unicuspid type of teeth. The degree of modification in the structure depends on the diet, thus Haplochromis that feeds on soft tissues of snails only requires modifications in oral dentition while Haplochromis that feeds on both soft tissues and shells of snails require modification in the lower pharyngeal bone for grinding purposes. Other modifications connected with food utilisation may be located in the alimentary canal. (I) The fish species that are commercially exploited are Protopterus aethiopicus, Clarias mossambicus, Tilapia esculenta, Tilapia amphimelas and Tilapia hybrids. The other fish species present in the lake but not commercially exploited are: Gnathonemus sp. Alestes sp. Labeo sp., Barbus paludinoses, Barbus jacksoni, Barbus lineomaculatus, Barbus regersi, Leptogrlanis sp., Schilbe sp., Haplochromis spp. and Hemihaplochromis sp. (2) Protopterus sp. and Clarias sp. are mostly caught with hooks on long lines. There has been a steady increase in number of hooks on the lake. Since the stocks of Protopterus and C/arias in the lake have a limit, we should control the number of hooks used by each of the fishermen in order to avoid overharvesting. (3) All the previous studies on Lake Kitangiri fisheries suggested the use of gill nets with mesh size greater than 88.9 mm in order to avoid the capture of immature Ti/apia spp. But if the fishermen are to obtain economic gains from the fishery, the optimum mesh size for use is 88.9 -101.6 mm. (4) The gillnet is a passive gear with very beneficial selective characteristics. Unfortunately the drive-in fishery which exists on Lake Kitangiri more or less destroys the gillnet selectivity characteristics. It is therefore recommended that the beating of water with poles be discouraged and stopped. (5) There is need for provision of stable fishing canoes to replace the unstable bottle palm dug-out canoes which are currently being used and which are very risky to operate. (6) The fish processing facilities on Lake Kitangiri are still inadequate. Most of the fish is sun dried, Since sun drying is very difficult during the rainy season, most fishermen carry out intensive fishing during the dry season, Concentrating most of the fishing effort in anyone season instead of spreading evenly this effort over the whole year could damage the age structure of the exploitable stocks. (7) There are considerable fluctuations in the volume of water of the lake. The feasibility of regulating the water loss through the effluent Sibiti river should be investigated by the Water Development Department. (8) Damming the Sibiti river is an expensive undertaking and therefore, the Rural Development Bank of Tanzania should be asked to assess the economic feasibility of such a project.

Government of Sri Lanka initiated a project for conducting a experimental skipjack fishery using modern pole and line method and an experimental fishery for live bait and small pelagic fish using purse seine and lampara nets, with the, assistance of UNDP and FAO. Accordingly, the survey for small pelagic fish varieties using the purse seine and lampara nets commenced in April, 1972 and will continue until the end of 1975. This paper is a preliminary report on the results of the survey carried out between Septernber 1972 to October 1978.

The reproductive biology of Otolithes cuvieri (Trewavas, 1974) is reported in the present communication. The size at first maturity for the females was estimated to be 275 mm. The spawning activity was observed throughout the year with two peaks occurring in April and June. Two prominent peaks of gonadosomatic index (April and June) also support the view of two major spawning. Relative fecundity ranged from 71,574 to 79,680 eggs per 100g of body weight. Relationship of fecundity with fish length, fish weight and ovary weight of the species has been established as F = -132971 + 1447.441 x L, F = 124195 + 468.798 x W and F = 250517.5 + 3369.029 x OW, respectively. Study of sex ratio by random sampling of the catches indicated the dominance of females in commercial catches of Mumbai coast.

A new algorithm, representing an important advance in determination of the functional relationship, is first reported here. The algorithm is very useful and convenient for analyzing the incorporation of impurities. To show how the algorithm works, two early and well-known vapor phase epitaxy (VPE) experiments-Ashen's (Ashen, D. J.; Dean, P. J.; Hurle, D. T. J.; Mullin, J. B.; Royle, A.; White, A. M. Gallium Arsenide and Related Compounds, Institute of Physics Conference Series 24, 1974; Institute of Physics: London, 1975; p 229.), involving the doping of silicon and DiLorenzo's (DiLorenzo, J. V. J. Cryst. Growth 1972, 17, 189.), involving the mole fraction effect-are calculated to find the functional relationship between the Si contamination and the partial pressure of HCl. The calculated curves agree with the experimental results. A conclusion that the calculated values are greater than the true values has been drawn.

鸟类的个体发育是在双亲、雏鸟及巢组成的一种特殊环境中完成的,稳定的热环境是它们完成孵化和雏鸟生长发育的必要条件(White et al.,1974;Purdue,1976;Ellis,1982;Haftorn,1983;Morton et al.,1985;Schnace et al.,1991;Vatnick et al.,1998;张晓爱等,1995)。因此亲鸟的伴巢行为及时间是指亲鸟在繁殖期间,为筑巢、防御、抱卵、孵雏及递食而出现在巢中或附近的所有行为(Oppenhaim,1972)。亲鸟拌巢的时间分配与巢环境有密切关系,已有大量的报道(如Purdue,1976;Ellis, 1982;Schnace et al., 1991;张晓爱等,1995)。张晓爱等(1995)比较了高寒草甸地区的地面、灌丛及洞穴3种不同营巢类型亲鸟的伴巢时间分配模式,但是对亲缘关系较近,营巢生境相同鸟类之间的伴巢时间分配模式,以及坐巢行为与巢环境之间关系没有报道,国外对这方面的报道也甚少。本项研究选择高寒草甸的两种百灵科鸟:角百灵(Eremophila alpestris)和小云雀(Alauda gulgula)作为研究对象来比较亲鸟在卵化期坐巢行为与巢址微环境的关系,对研究鸟类繁殖行为与环境关系及从生活史进化角度研究相似种的共存机制提供理论依据。

Este trabalho analisa a evolução da produtividade agrícola em relação à tipologia dos solos de cerca de 455 produtores rurais, que vêm sendo acompanhados anualmente por imagens de satélites a cada três anos, através da aplicação de questionários com informações agroambientais e socioeconômicas em campo, desde 1986, na floresta tropical úmida em Machadinho d´Oeste, Rondônia. Em 1999, dando continuidade ao trabalho de monitoramento da pequena agricultura nesta região, um novo levantamento foi realizado, sobre os sistemas de produção agrícolas praticados, aliado ao levantamento e tratamento dos solos agrícolas das propriedades pesquisadas quanto às características químicas, físicas e morfológicas dos mesmos.

A fim de melhor compreender a dimensão e a dinâmica da ocupação agrícola da Amazônia, seus impactos ambientais e os equívocos da pesquisa e do desenvolvimento rural nessa região, pesquisadores da Embrapa-NMA e da organização não governamental Ecoforça Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento, elegeram o Município de Machadinho d´Oeste, na porção nordeste do Estado de Rondônia, como objeto de um estudo de longo prazo. Há dez anos, mais de 450 pequenas propriedades rurais desse antigo projeto de assentamento do INCRA estão sendo acompanhadas por uma equipe interdisciplinar, através de levantamentos periódicos de cerca de 250 variáveis agronômicas, socioeconômicas e ambientais. A cada três anos, aproximadamente, é traçado um perfil da agricultura e dos agricultores da região. Todos os dados obtidos são geocodificados e objetos de tratamentos estatísticos diversos, servindo para a construção de indicadores agronômicos, socioeconômicos e ambientais sobre a evolução temporal e espacial da agricultura e da agricultura praticada em Machadinho d´Oeste, obtido em campo no ano de 1996. Ele complementa os perfis elaborados anteriormente, em 1986, 1989 e 1993. Maiores informações sobre o projeto podem ser obtidas via Internet.

Historicamente, a expansão de atividades agropecuárias sobre áreas naturais é considerada uma das principais ameaças à biodiversidade. Desmatamentos, uso do fogo, superpastoreio, monocultura, mecanização intensiva e uso indiscriminado de agrotóxicos diminuem a diversidade da flora e da fauna (RAMBALDI; OLIVEIRA, 2003). Por outro lado, muitas áreas consideradas de grande valor para a conservação da biodiversidade estão inseridas em um mosaico de fragmentos de remanescentes naturais intercalados em uma matriz predominantemente constituída por áreas agrícolas, onde muitas espécies da fauna silvestre encontram recursos necessários para sua sobrevivência enquanto outras não conseguem adaptar-se e acabam sofrendo ameaças até serem regionalmente extintas. A incorporação de conceitos e tecnologias inovadoras na agropecuária, como a agricultura orgânica, a redução e eliminação de agrotóxicos e do uso do fogo, além da manutenção de remanescentes de fragmentos florestais nativos são práticas que poderiam favorecer o incremento da biodiversidade local e, consequentemente, a sustentabilidade ambiental das atividades agrícolas.
