Biofilm formation has been pointed as a major concern in different industrial applications, namely on biomedical implants and surgical instruments, which has prompted the development of new strategies for production of efficient antimicrobial surfaces. In this work, nano âgalvanic couples were created to enhance the antibacterial properties of silver, by embedding it into amorphous carbon (a-C) matrix. The developed Ag/a-C nanocomposite coatings, deposited by magnetron sputtering, revealed an outstanding antibacterial activity against S.epidermidis, promoting a total reduction in biofilm formation with no bacteria counts in all dilution. The open circuit potential (OCP) tests in 0.9% NaCl confirmed that a-C shows a positive \OCP\ value, in contrast to Ag coating, thus enhancing the ionization of biocidal Ag+ due to the nano-galvanic couple activation. This result was confirmed by the inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), which revealed a higher Ag ionization rate in the nanocomposite coating in comparison with the Ag coating. The surface of Ag/a-C and Ag coatings immersed in 0.9% NaCl were monitored by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) over a period of 24 hours, being found that the Ag ionization determined by ICP-OES was accompanied by an Ag nanoparticles coalescence and agglomeration in Ag/a-C coating.

Aromatic amines resulted from azo dyes biotransformation under anaerobic conditions are generally recalcitrant to further anaerobic degradation. The catalytic effect of carbon materials (CM) on the reduction of azo dyes is known and has been confirmed in this work by increasing 3-fold the biological reduction rate of Mordant Yellow 1 (MY1). The resulting m-nitroaniline (m-NoA) was further degraded to m-phenylenediamine (m-Phe) only in the presence of CM. The use of CM to degraded anaerobically aromatic amines resulted from azo dye reduction was never reported before. In the sequence, we studied the effect of different CM on the bioreduction of o-, m- and p-NoA. Three microporous activated carbons with different surface chemistry, original (AC0), chemical oxidized with HNO3 (ACHNO3) and thermal treated (ACH2), and three mesoporous carbons, xerogels (CXA and CXB) and nanotubes (CNT) were assessed. In the absence of CM, NoA were only partially reduced to the corresponding Phe, whereas in the presence of CM, more than 90% was converted to the corresponding Phe. ACH2 and AC0 were the best electron shuttles, increasing the rates up to 8-fold. In 24h, the biological treatment of NoA and MY1 with AC0, decreased up to 88% the toxicity towards a methanogenic consortium, as compared to the non-treated solutions. OBJECTIVE: Using P-wave signal-averaged electrocardiography, we assessed the patterns of atrial electrical activation in patients with idiopathic atrial fibrillation as compared with patterns in patients with atrial fibrillation associated with structural heart disease. METHODS: Eighty patients with recurrent paroxysmal atrial fibrillation were divided into 3 groups as follows: group I - 40 patients with atrial fibrillation associated with non-rheumatic heart disease; group II - 25 patients with rheumatic atrial fibrillation; and group III - 15 patients with idiopathic atrial fibrillation. All patients underwent P-wave signal-averaged electrocardiography for frequency-domain analysis using spectrotemporal mapping and statistical techniques for detecting and quantifying intraatrial conduction disturbances. RESULTS: We observed an important fragmentation in atrial electrical conduction in 27% of the patients in group I, 64% of the patients in group II, and 67% of the patients in group III (p=0.003). CONCLUSION: Idiopathic atrial fibrillation has important intraatrial conduction disturbances. These alterations are similar to those observed in individuals with rheumatic atrial fibrillation, suggesting the existence of some degree of structural involvement of the atrial myocardium that cannot be detected with conventional electrocardiography and echocardiography.

The case of a 16-year-old patient with atrioventricular tachycardia caused by a single left anterolateral accessory pathway is reported. When the patient underwent radiofrequency ablation, a lesion on the mitral annulus lateral wall produced changes in the retrograde atrial activation pattern determined by that pathway; changes ranged from a delay in depolarization of the annulus posterior portions to full left atrium counterclockwise activation. Such phenomena were probably caused by a block in the isthmus between the annulus and the lower left pulmonary vein ostium. This case illustrates the importance of the mitral-pulmonary isthmus in the process of left atrium activation, an alert to changes induced by its unintentional block during accessory pathway ablation.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether recording of the activation potential may be used as an isolated criterion to guide catheter ablation of atriofascicular Mahaim fibers. METHODS: We studied 6 patients (5 females, mean age of 26±7.3 years) with paroxysmal tachycardias with a wide QRS complex, whose electrophysiological study diagnosed atriofascicular Mahaim fibers. Mapping and catheter ablation were performed in sinus rhythm, guided only by the recording of the activation potential of the fiber. RESULTS: Efficacy in ablation was achieved in all patients. The fibers were located in the right lateral region of the tricuspid ring in 3 patients, right posterolateral region in 2, and right anterolateral region in 1. A mean of 5.3±3 radiofrequency applications was performed. The mean fluoroscopy time was 46.6±25 minutes, and the mean duration of the procedure was 178.6±108 minutes. No complication occurred. In a mean 20-month follow-up, all patients were asymptomatic and receiving no antiarrhythmic drugs. CONCLUSION: Catheter ablation of Mahaim fibers may be performed with good safety and efficacy by mapping the activation potential of the tricuspid ring in sinus rhythm.

We have shown that F. hepatica Ags-treated dendritic cells (DC) together with a TLRl ligand (CpG-ODN) produce high levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10 and TGF-Beta) and low of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF, IL-6, IL -12). Hypothesis: The semimature phenotype achieved by DC, could be used to reduce inflammation in a model of autoimmune disease. The high production of IL-10 and TGF-Beta by these cells could directly or through the induction of T reg cells inhibit the inflammatory response. Objective: In this project we propose the immunization of DBA1 / j mice, susceptible to the development of collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) with F. hepatica-treated DC in conjunction with CpG-ODN to reduce clinical signs of disease. Materials: In our laboratory, we developed the CIA model by two immunizations of DBA1 / j mice with bovine type II collagen and Freund's adjuvant. The model allowed to stablish a clinical index by swelling in the legs of animals. Twelve days after the first immunization the animals are injected with DC treated with: 1. PBS 2. F.hepatica Extract (TE) + CII, 3. CpG + CII, 4. TE + CpG + CII Macroscopic observation will take place daily from 7 days of the 2nd immunization. After sacrifice the joints of the legs will be prepared for histological analysis. Serum levels of IgG1 antibodies (Th2 profile) and IgG2a (Th1 profile) will be detected by ELISA. It will also detected the cytokine profile in draining lymph nodes by ELISA and additionally the cell populations of regulatory T cells (Treg) CD4 + CD25 + Foxp3 or Tr1 cells. Expected results: We believe that the treatment of animals that had developed CIA with DC will be able to migrate to lymphatic organs and secrete TGF-B (T reg cell-inducing), IL-10 (inducing Tr1 cells), IDO (inhibitory of T cells and inducing of T reg cells) could alone or in synergy inhibit Th17-type responses and Th1 associated with the pathology in this disease.

SUMMARY The increase of atmospheric CO2 due to global change and/or horticultural practices promotes direct effects on plant growth and development. These responses may occur in natural ecosystems, but also can be used to increase the production of some plants and some secondary compounds. Present work tries to study the effects of atmospheric CO2 enrichment under greenhouse conditions on growth and in the concentration and composition of secondary metabolites of Taxus bacatta, Hypericum perforatum and Echinacea purpurea under Mediterranean environmental conditions. CO2 fertilization shows interesting perspectives to increase and improve horticultural techniques in order to increase plant medicinal productivity, in spite of clear differences among the species. In general this technique promotes important and significant increases in primary productivity and, in some cases, also in secondary compounds. This has a great horticultural relevance because the total productivity of this kind of products increase at crop level, directly because concentration is increased and /or indirectly because biomass is increased.
