How do the large scale structures of capitalism and the local social relations of workplaces and organisations shape each other? Through a series of European studies of capital and labour's shifting struggles and compromises; of the politics of welfare, industrial relations and labour markets; and the transformation of post-industrial networked workplaces, this edited collection shows how capitalist workplaces and economies are changing today. The first section explores how European capitalism developed and the different national forms of the struggle between capital and labour for a bigger share of national income. In the second part of the volume, the contributors investigate the institutions that are the building blocks of these different national forms, and how they are changing as labour markets are increasingly shaped by globalisation, feminisation and liberalisation. The final chapters examine how these institutions of capitalism play out in the contemporary workplace – where the most dynamic sectors are based on loose networks and external labour markets and a shifting, uncertain alliance between employers and workers. The authors argue for a new integration of political economy and the sociology of work and organisations.

Evolution can increase the complexity of matter by self-organization into helical architectures, the best example being the DNA double helix. One common aspect, apparently shared by most of these architectures, is the presence of covalent bonds within the helix backbone. Here, we report the unprecedented crystal structures of a metal complex that self-organizes into a continuous double helical structure, assembled by non-covalent building blocks. Built up solely by weak stacking interactions, this alternating tread stairs-like double helical assembly mimics the DNA double helix structure. Starting from a racemic mixture in aqueous solution, the ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complex forms two polymorphic structures of a left-handed double helical assembly of only the Λ-enantiomer. The stacking of the helices is different in both polymorphs: a crossed woodpile structure versus a parallel columnar stacking.

A general method to prepare organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels has been presented. A series of organic-inorganic hybrid aerogels were successfully produced from 3d trivalent transition metals (Cr3+, Fe3+) and bridging carboxylic acids. Gelation of the Cr(III) gels was achieved by heating the precursor solution to temperatures above 80 degrees C, which is in sharp contrast to usual supramolecular gels. Among a range of ligands used, highly porous aerogels could be prepared from rigid carboxylate, e.g. 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate and 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate. The porous aerogels can be described as a coherent, rigid spongy network of continuous nanometre-sized particles, which is significantly different from the usual fibrous network of supramolecular gels. The aerogels have tunable porous structures with micro-and mesoporosity depending on their reactant concentrations. Their surface areas, pore volumes, and average pore sizes were analysed by using nitrogen sorption, and the accessibility of the pores to bulky molecules was also evaluated. It represents a strategy to prepare hybrid materials with large porosity utilising structurally simple building blocks as precursors.

Ubiquitous parallel computing aims to make parallel programming accessible to a wide variety of programming areas using deterministic and scale-free programming models built on a task abstraction. However, it remains hard to reconcile these attributes with pipeline parallelism, where the number of pipeline stages is typically hard-coded in the program and defines the degree of parallelism.
This paper introduces hyperqueues, a programming abstraction that enables the construction of deterministic and scale-free pipeline parallel programs. Hyperqueues extend the concept of Cilk++ hyperobjects to provide thread-local views on a shared data structure. While hyperobjects are organized around private local views, hyperqueues require shared concurrent views on the underlying data structure. We define the semantics of hyperqueues and describe their implementation in a work-stealing scheduler. We demonstrate scalable performance on pipeline-parallel PARSEC benchmarks and find that hyperqueues provide comparable or up to 30% better performance than POSIX threads and Intel's Threading Building Blocks. The latter are highly tuned to the number of available processing cores, while programs using hyperqueues are scale-free.

Structured parallel programming is recognised as a viable and effective means of tackling parallel programming problems. Recently, a set of simple and powerful parallel building blocks RISC pb2l) has been proposed to support modelling and implementation of parallel frameworks. In this work we demonstrate how that same parallel building block set may be used to model both general purpose parallel programming abstractions, not usually listed in classical skeleton sets, and more specialized domain specific parallel patterns. We show how an implementation of RISC pb2 l can be realised via the FastFlow framework and present experimental evidence of the feasibility and efficiency of the approach.

Low-power processors and accelerators that were originally designed for the embedded systems market are emerging as building blocks for servers. Power capping has been actively explored as a technique to reduce the energy footprint of high-performance processors. The opportunities and limitations of power capping on the new low-power processor and accelerator ecosystem are less understood. This paper presents an efficient power capping and management infrastructure for heterogeneous SoCs based on hybrid ARM/FPGA designs. The infrastructure coordinates dynamic voltage and frequency scaling with task allocation on a customised Linux system for the Xilinx Zynq SoC. We present a compiler-assisted power model to guide voltage and frequency scaling, in conjunction with workload allocation between the ARM cores and the FPGA, under given power caps. The model achieves less than 5% estimation bias to mean power consumption. In an FFT case study, the proposed power capping schemes achieve on average 97.5% of the performance of the optimal execution and match the optimal execution in 87.5% of the cases, while always meeting power constraints.

The reactions of enantiopure cyclohexene epoxides and trans-1,2-bromoacetates, derived from the corresponding substituted benzene cis-dihydrodiol metabolites, with nitrogen nucleophiles, were examined and possible mechanisms proposed. An initial objective was the synthesis of new 1,2-aminoalcohol enantiomers as potential chiral ligands and synthetic scaffolds for library generation. These apparently simple substitution reactions proved to be more complex than initially anticipated and were found to involve a combination of different reaction mechanisms. Allylic trans-1,2-azidohydrins were prepared by Lewis acid-catalysed ring-opening of cyclic vinyl epoxides with sodium azide via an S(N)2 mechanism. On heating, these trans-1,2-azidohydrins isomerized to the corresponding trans-1,4-azidohydrins via a suprafacial allyl azide [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement mechanism. Conversion of a 1,2-azidohydrin to a 1,2-azidoacetate moved the equilibrium position in favour of the 1,4-substitution product. Allylic trans-1,2-bromoacetates reacted with sodium azide at room temperature to give C-2 and C-4 substituted products. A clean inversion of configuration at C-2 was found, as expected, from a concerted S(N)2-pathway. However, substitution at C-4 was not stereoselective and resulted in mixtures of 1,4-cis and 1,4-trans products. This observation can be rationalized in terms of competitive S(N)2 and S(N)2 reactions allied to a [3,3]-sigmatropic rearrangement. cis-1,2-Azidohydrins and cis-1,2-azidoacetates were much more prone to rearrange than the corresponding trans-isomers. Reaction of the softer tosamide nucleophile with trans-1,2-bromoacetates resulted, predominantly, in C-4 substitution via a syn-S(N)2 mechanism. One application of the reaction of secondary amines with allylic cyclohexene epoxides, to give trans-1,2-aminoalcohols, is in the synthesis of the anticholinergic drug vesamicol, via an S(N)2 mechanism. We review the physics of hybrid optomechanical systems consisting of a mechanical oscillator interacting with both a radiation mode and an additional matterlike system. We concentrate on the cases embodied by either a single or a multi-atom system (a Bose-Einstein condensate, in particular) and discuss a wide range of physical effects, from passive mechanical cooling to the set-up of multipartite entanglement, from optomechanical nonlocality to the achievement of non-classical states of a single mechanical mode. The reviewed material showcases the viability of hybridised cavity optomechanical systems as basic building blocks for quantum communication networks and quantum state-engineering devices, possibly empowered by the use of quantum and optimal control techniques. The results that we discuss are instrumental to the promotion of hybrid optomechanical devices as promising experimental platforms for the study of nonclassicality at the genuine mesoscopic level.

Laboratory salt decay simulations are a well established method to assess the relative durability of stone. There is still, however, very much scope to implement improved monitoring techniques to investigate the changes experienced by the materials during these experiments. Non-destructive techniques have acquired over recent decades a preferential status for monitoring change samples during salt decay tests, as they allow cumulative tests on each sample. The development of HD laser scanning permits detailed mapping of surface changes and, therefore, constitutes an effective technique to monitor non-destructively surface changes in tested samples as an alternative to other monitoring techniques such as traditional weight loss strategies that do not permit any degree of spatial differentiation that can be related, for example, to underlying stone properties.

Slow release drugs must be manufactured to meet target specifications with respect to dissolution curve profiles. In this paper we consider the problem of identifying the drivers of dissolution curve variability of a drug from historical manufacturing data. Several data sources are considered: raw material parameters, coating data, loss on drying and pellet size statistics. The methodology employed is to develop predictive models using LASSO, a powerful machine learning algorithm for regression with high-dimensional datasets. LASSO provides sparse solutions facilitating the identification of the most important causes of variability in the drug fabrication process. The proposed methodology is illustrated using manufacturing data for a slow release drug.

Molecular information gathering and processing – a young field of applied chemistry - is undergoing good growth. The progress is occurring both in terms of conceptual development and in terms of the strengthening of older concepts with new examples. This review critically surveys these two broad avenues. We consider some cases where molecules emulate one of the building blocks of electronic logic gates. We then examine molecular emulation of various Boolean logic gates carrying one, two or three inputs. Some single-input gates are popular information gathering devices. Special systems, such as ‘lab-on-a-molecule’ and molecular keypad locks, also receive attention. A situation deviating from the Boolean blueprint is also discussed. Some pointers are offered for maintaining the upward curve of the field.

The androgen receptor (AR) is a key regulator of prostate growth and the principal drug target for the treatment of prostate cancer. Previous studies have mapped AR targets and identified some candidates which may contribute to cancer progression, but did not characterize AR biology in an integrated manner. In this study, we took an interdisciplinary approach, integrating detailed genomic studies with metabolomic profiling and identify an anabolic transcriptional network involving AR as the core regulator. Restricting flux through anabolic pathways is an attractive approach to deprive tumours of the building blocks needed to sustain tumour growth. Therefore, we searched for targets of the AR that may contribute to these anabolic processes and could be amenable to therapeutic intervention by virtue of differential expression in prostate tumours. This highlighted calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase kinase 2, which we show is overexpressed in prostate cancer and regulates cancer cell growth via its unexpected role as a hormone-dependent modulator of anabolic metabolism. In conclusion, it is possible to progress from transcriptional studies to a promising therapeutic target by taking an unbiased interdisciplinary approach.

Environmental problems, especially climate change, have become a serious global issue waiting for people to solve. In the construction industry, the concept of sustainable building is developing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. In this study, a building information modeling (BIM) based building design optimization method is proposed to facilitate designers to optimize their designs and improve buildings’ sustainability. A revised particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm is applied to search for the trade-off between life cycle costs (LCC) and life cycle carbon emissions (LCCE) of building designs. In order tovalidate the effectiveness and efficiency of this method, a case study of an office building is conducted in Hong Kong. The result of the case study shows that this method can enlarge the searching space for optimal design solutions and shorten the processing time for optimal design results, which is really helpful for designers to deliver an economic and environmental friendly design scheme.

Metal concentrations from stream waters in two geological blocks in Northern Ireland were compared to determine the contributions of catchment characteristics and in-stream conditions. One block is composed of metamorphosed schist and unconsolidated glacial drift with peat or peaty podzol (mainly humic) soils, while the other block consists of tertiary basalt with brown earth and gley soils. Water samples were collected from 52 stream sites and analysed for Fe, Mn and Al as well as a range of other chemical determinands known to affect metal solubility. Densities of metal-rich ochre deposit were determined for stream bed stone samples. Higher conductivities and concentrations of bicarbonate, alkalinity, Ca and Mg occurred on basalt than on schist. Despite higher Fe and Mn oxide concentrations in basalt-derived non-humic soils, stream water concentrations were much lower and ochre deposit densities only one third of those on schist overlain by humic soils. Neither rock nor soil type predicted Al concentrations, but pH and dissolved oxygen did. Peat-generated acidity and the limited acid neutralising capacity of base-poor metamorphosed schist have resulted in elevated concentrations of metals and ochre deposit in surface waters.
