4-(p-X-phenyl)thiosemicarbazone of napthaldehyde {where X = Cl (HL1) and X = Br (HL2)}, thiosemicarbazone of quinoline-2-carbaldehyde (HL3) and 4-(p-fluorophenyl) thiosemicarbazone of salicylaldehyde (H2L4) and their copper(I) {Cu(HL1)(PPh3)(2)Br]center dot CH3CN (1) and Cu(HL2)(PPh3)(2)Cl]center dot DMSO (2)} and copper(II) {((Cu2L2Cl)-Cl-3)(2)(mu-Cl)(2)]center dot 2H(2)O (3) and Cu(L-4)(Py)] (4)} complexes are reported herein. The synthesized ligands and their copper complexes were successfully characterized by elemental analysis, cyclic voltammetry, NMR, ESI-MS, IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy. Molecular structures of all the Cu(I) and Cu(II) complexes have been determined by X-ray crystallography. All the complexes (1-4) were tested for their ability to exhibit DNA-binding and - cleavage activity. The complexes effectively interact with CT-DNA possibly by groove binding mode, with binding constants ranging from 10(4) to 10(5) M-1. Among the complexes, 3 shows the highest chemical (60%) as well as photo-induced (80%) DNA cleavage activity against pUC19 DNA. Finally, the in vitro antiproliferative activity of all the complexes was assayed against the HeLa cell line. Some of the complexes have proved to be as active as the clinical referred drugs, and the greater potency of 3 may be correlated with its aqueous solubility and the presence of the quinonoidal group in the thiosemicarbazone ligand coordinated to the metal.

The synthesis of high molecular weight esters such as bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate is of significance for its use as a lubricant. This ester is synthesized by the transesterification of dimethyl sebacate with 2-ethylhexanol. Therefore, the solubilities of bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate and dimethyl sebacate were determined at 308-328 K at pressures of 10-18 MPa in supercritical carbon dioxide. The solubility of dimethyl sebacate was always higher than bis (2-ethylhexyl) sebacate at a given temperature and pressure. The Mendez-Teja model was used to verify the self-consistency of data. Further, a new semi-empirical model with three parameters was developed using the solution theory coupled with Wilson activity coefficient. This model was used to correlate the experimental data of this work and solubilities of many high molecular weight esters reported in the literature. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Controlling optical and electronic properties of graphene via substitutional doping is central to many fascinating applications. Doping graphene with boron (B) or nitrogen (N) has led to p- or n-type graphene; however, the electron mobility in doped-graphene is severely compromised due to increased electron-defect scattering. Here, we demonstrate through Raman spectroscopy, nonlinear optical and ultrafast spectroscopy, and density functional theory that the graphitic dopant configuration is stable in graphene and does not significantly alter electron-electron or electron-phonon scattering, that is otherwise present in doped graphene, by preserving the crystal coherence length (L-a).

Thyroid hormones regulate almost every process in the body, including body temperature, growth, and heart rate. They influence carbohydrate metabolism, protein synthesis and breakdown, and cardiovascular, renal, and brain function. Two new polymorphs of synthetic L-thyroxine (T4) are reported and the effect of polymorphism on the solubility of this important hormone is shown. Conformational changes were also discovered to have a remarkable effect on the strength of halogen bonding and the reactivity of the CI bonds, which could have a significant effect on the hormone activity.

The present study elucidates the effects of nanoscale boron nitride particles addition on the microstructural and mechanical characteristics of monolithic magnesium. Novel light-weight Mg nanocomposites containing 0.3, 0.6 and 1.2vol% nano-size boron nitride particulates were synthesized using the disintegrated melt deposition method followed by hot extrusion. Microstructural characterization of developed Mg/x-boron nitride composites revealed significant grain refinement due to the uniform distribution of nano-boron nitride particulates. Texture analysis of selected Mg-1.2 boron nitride nanocomposite showed an increase in the intensity of fiber texture alongside enhanced localized recrystallization when compared to monolithic Mg. Mechanical properties evaluation under indentation, tension and compression loading indicated superior response of Mg/x-boron nitride composites in comparison to pure Mg. The uniform distribution of nanoscale boron nitride particles and the modified crystallographic texture achieved due to the nano-boron nitride addition attributes to the superior mechanical characteristics of Mg/boron nitride nanocomposites.

The addition of small amount of boron to Ti and it alloys refines the as-cast microstructure and enhances the mechanical properties. In this paper, we employ nanoindentation on each of the constituent phases in the microstructure and `rule-of-mixture' type analysis to examine their relative contributions to the strength enhancement in a Ti-6Al-4V alloy modified with 0.3 wt% B. Our results indicate to two main contributors to the relatively higher flow strength of B-modified alloy vis-a-vis the base alloy: (a) strengthening of alpha phase due to the reduction in the effective slip length that occurs as a result of the microstructural refinement that occurs upon B addition, and (b) composite strengthening caused by the TiB whiskers present in the alloy. Three new triarylborane conjugated dicyanovinyl chromophores (Mes(2)B-pi-donor-DCV); donor: N-methyldiphenylamine (1) and triphenylamine (2 and 3 with two BMes(2) substitutions]) of type A-D-A (acceptor-donor- acceptor) are reported. Compounds 1-3 exhibit intense charge transfer (CT) absorption bands in the visible region. These absorption peaks are combination CT bands of the amine donor to both the BMes(2) and DCV units. This inference was supported by theoretical studies. Compound 1 shows weak fluorescence compared to 2 and 3. The discrimination of fluoride and cyanide ions is essential in the case of triarylborane (TAB) based anion sensors as a similar response is given towards both the anions. Anion binding studies of 1, 2 and 3 showed that fluoride ions bind selectively to the boron centre and block the corresponding CT transition (donor to BMes(2)) leaving the other CT transition to be red shifted. On the other hand, cyanide ions bind with both the receptor sites and stop both the CT transition processes and hence a different colorimetric response was noted. The binding of F-/CN- induces colour changes in the visible region of the electronic spectra of 2 and 3, which allows for the naked-eye detection of F- and CN- ions. The anion binding mechanisms are established using NMR titration experiments.

The solubilities of 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol in supercritical carbon dioxide were measured at 308, 313,323 and 333K, and at pressures of 10-18 MPa. Solubilities (in mole fraction),ranged from 0.4 x 10(-3) to 17.4 x 10(-3) for 10-undecenoic acid and 2.7 x 10(-3) to 25 x 10(-3) for geraniol, respectively. The AARD was around 11% and 5% for these models for 10-undecenoic acid and geraniol, respectively. The solubilities of both compounds showed retrograde behavior wherein the solubilities decrease with temperature at isobaric conditions. The solubility of geraniol was higher than 10-undecenoic acid at all investigated temperatures and pressures. The data were found to be self consistent based on the Mendez-Santiago model. New models based on association theory using van Laar and Margules activity coefficient models for solute in liquid phase were derived, and used to correlate the solubilities. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The use of copolymer and polymer blends widened the possibility of creating materials with multilayered architectures. Hierarchical polymer systems with a wide array of micro and nanostructures are generated by thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) in partially miscible polymer blends. Various parameters like the interaction between the polymers, concentration, solvent/non-solvent ratio, and quenching temperature have to be optimized to obtain these micro/nanophase structures. Alternatively, the addition of nanoparticles is another strategy to design materials with desired hetero-phase structures. The dynamics of the polymer nanocomposite depends on the statistical ordering of polymers around the nanoparticle, which is dependent on the shape of the nanoparticle. The entropic loss due to deformation of polymer chains, like the repulsive interactions due to coiling and the attractive interactions in the case of swelling has been highlighted in this perspective article. The dissipative particle dynamics has been discussed and is correlated with the molecular dynamics simulation in the case of polymer blends. The Cahn Hillard Cook model on variedly shaped immobile fillers has shown difference in the propagation of the composition wave. The nanoparticle shape has a contributing effect on the polymer particle interaction, which can change the miscibility window in the case of these phase separating polymer blends. Quantitative information on the effect of spherical particles on the demixing temperature is well established and further modified to explain the percolation of rod shaped particles in the polymer blends. These models correlate well with the experimental observations in context to the dynamics induced by the nanoparticle in the demixing behavior of the polymer blend. The miscibility of the LCST polymer blend depends on the enthalpic factors like the specific interaction between the components, and the solubility product and the entropic losses occurring due to the formation of any favorable interactions. Hence, it is essential to assess the entropic and enthalpic interactions induced by the nanoparticles independently. The addition of nanoparticles creates heterogeneity in the polymer phase it is localized. This can be observed as an alteration in the relaxation behavior of the polymer. This changes the demixing behavior and the interaction parameter between the polymers. The compositional changes induced due to the incorporation of nanoparticles are also attributed as a reason for the altered demixing temperature. The particle shape anisotropy causes a direction dependent depletion, which changes the phase behavior of the blend. The polymer-grafted nanoparticles with varying grafting density show tremendous variation in the miscibility of the blend. The stretching of the polymer chains grafted on the nanoparticles causes an entropy penalty in the polymer blend. A comparative study on the different shaped particles is not available up to date for understanding these aspects. Hence, we have juxtaposed the various computational studies on nanoparticle dynamics, the shape effect of NPs on homopolymers and also the cases of various polymer blends without nanoparticles to sketch a complete picture on the effect of various particles on the miscibility of LCST blends.

Strontium ions (Sr2+) are known to prevent osteoporosis and also encourage bone formation. Such twin requirements have motivated researchers to develop Sr-substituted biomaterials for orthopaedic applications. The present study demonstrates a new concept of developing Sr-substituted Mg-3(PO4)(2) - based biodegradable scaffolds. In particular, this work reports the fabrication, mechanical properties with an emphasis on strength reliability as well as in vitro degradation of highly biodegradable strontium-incorporated magnesium phosphate cements. These implantable scaffolds were fabricated using three-dimensional powder printing, followed by high temperature sintering and/or chemical conversion, a technique adaptable to develop patient-specific implants. A moderate combination of strength properties of 36.7 MPa (compression), 242 MPa (bending) and 10.7 MPa (tension) were measured. A reasonably modest Weibull modulus of up to 8.8 was recorded after uniaxial compression or diametral tensile tests on 3D printed scaffolds. A comparison among scaffolds with varying compositions or among sintered or chemically hardened scaffolds reveals that the strength reliability is not compromised in Sr-substituted scaffolds compared to baseline Mg-3(PO4)(2). The micro-computed tomography analysis reveals the presence of highly interconnected porous architecture in three-dimension with lognormal pore size distribution having median in the range of 17.74-26.29 mu m for the investigated scaffolds. The results of extensive in vitro ion release study revealed passive degradation with a reduced Mg2+ release and slow but sustained release of Sr2+ from strontium-substituted magnesium phosphate scaffolds. Taken together, the present study unequivocally illustrates that the newly designed Sr-substituted magnesium phosphate scaffolds with good strength reliability could be used for biomedical applications requiring consistent Sr2+-release, while the scaffold degrades in physiological medium. Statement of significance The study investigates the additive manufacturing of scaffolds based on different strontium-substituted magnesium phosphate bone cements by means of three-dimensional powder printing technique (3DPP). Magnesium phosphates were chosen due to their higher biodegradability compared to calcium phosphates, which is due to both a higher solubility as well as the absence of phase changes (to low soluble hydroxyapatite) in vivo. Since strontium ions are known to promote bone formation by stimulating osteoblast growth, we aimed to establish such a highly degradable magnesium phosphate ceramic with an enhanced bioactivity for new bone ingrowth. After post-processing, mechanical strengths of up to 36.7 MPa (compression), 24.2 MPa (bending) and 10.7 MPa (tension) could be achieved. Simultaneously, the failure reliability of those bioceramic implant materials, measured by Weibull modulus calculations, were in the range of 4.3-8.8. Passive dissolution studies in vitro proved an ion release of Mg2+ and PO43- as well as Sr2+, which is fundamental for in vivo degradation and a bone growth promoting effect. In our opinion, this work broadens the range of bioceramic bone replacement materials suitable for additive manufacturing processing. The high biodegradability of MPC ceramics together with the anticipated promoting effect on osseointegration opens up the way for a patient-specific treatment with the prospect of a fast and complete healing of bone fractures. The emergence of multiple Dirac cones in hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-graphene heterostructures is particularly attractive because it offers potentially better landscape for higher and versatile transport properties than the primary Dirac cone. However, the transport coefficients of the cloned Dirac cones is yet not fully characterized and many open questions, including the evolution of charge dynamics and impurity scattering responsible for them, have remained unexplored. Noise measurements, having the potential to address these questions, have not been performed to date in dual-gated hBN graphene hBN devices. Here, we present the low frequency 1/f noise measurements at multiple Dirac cones in hBN encapsulated single and bilayer graphene in dual-gated geometry. Our results reveal that the low-frequency noise in graphene can be tuned by more than two-orders of magnitude by changing carrier concentration as well as by modifying the band structure in bilayer graphene. We find that the noise is surprisingly suppressed at the cloned Dirac cone compared to the primary Dirac cone in single layer graphene device, while it is strongly enhanced for the bilayer graphene with band gap opening. The results are explained with the calculation of dielectric function using tight-binding model. Our results also indicate that the 1/f noise indeed follows the Hooge's empirical formula in hBN-protected devices in dual-gated geometry. We also present for the first time the noise data in bipolar regime of a graphene device.

The solubilities of two lipid derivatives, geranyl butyrate and 10-undecen-1-ol, in SCCO2 (supercritical carbon dioxide) were measured at different operating conditions of temperature (308.15 to 333.15 K) and pressure (10 to 18 MPa). The solubilities (in mole fraction) ranged from 2.1 x 10(-3) to 23.2 x 10(-3) for geranyl butyrate and 2.2 x 10(-3) to 25.0 x 10(-3) for 10-undecen-1-ol, respectively. The solubility data showed a retrograde behavior in the pressure and temperature range investigated. Various combinations of association and solution theory along with different activity coefficient models were developed. The experimental data for the solubilities of 21 liquid solutes along with geranyl butyrate and 10-undecen-1-ol were correlated using both the newly derived models and the existing models. The average deviation of the correlation of the new models was below 15%.

The arc-root attachment on the anode surface of a dc non-transferred arc plasma torch has been successfully observed using a novel approach. A specially designed copper mirror with a boron nitride film coated on its surface central-region is employed to avoid the effect of intensive light emitted from the arc column upon the observation of weakly luminous arc root. It is found that the arc-root attachment is diffusive on the anode surface of the argon plasma torch, while constricted arc roots often occur when hydrogen or nitrogen is added into argon as the plasma-forming gas.
