An important concern for the university cultural heritage has just developed in Europe since the 1980s. The real asses of historic, scientific-technical, academic, documentary, artistic, architectural values are included in these rich heritages. The European continent developed during the last years significant actions which include the creation of organizations, committees with international character, as well as the writing of recommendations and regulations at the European and institutional level. Several universities took initiatives in the fields of the preservation and the valuation. In Cuba, there is a big interest for the cultural heritage of the nation. In spite of the difficult economic situation for several years, Cuba made a success of good results in the management of the historic centers and the patrimonial asses of the nation. However, the subject related to the university heritage is again little discussed in the national territory in spite of since 2010, several actions to study this heritage are implemented, thanks to the initiatives of the universities of the Cuban capital. Our case of study, Instituto Superior Politécnico José Antonio Echeverría, belonging to the campus CUJAE, established in 1964, produced a university cultural heritage of the scientific, artistic and documentary value, which distinguishes it from other universities. Unfortunately, there are several problems, which affect the real cultural asses of the ISPJAE and its campus. From the current situation, we propose a methodology in favor of the preservation and the valuation of its properties, based on the study of the current trends in the studied European and Cuban universities. The proposed actions will also favor the real property, taking into account that they have a strong link with those movable cultural asses; RIASSUNTO: Una preoccupazione importante per il patrimonio culturale universitario inizia a svilupparsi in Europa dagli anni 1980.

A vállalatok mind nagyobb mértékben alapozzák tevékenységüket a testetlen vagyon elemeire, miközben a dologi eszközök jelentősége mérséklődik.

The ever-growing interest in scientific techniques, able to characterise the materials and rediscover the steps behind the execution of a painting, makes them widely accepted in its investigation. This research discusses issues emerging from attribution and authentication studies and proposes best practise for the characterisation of materials and techniques, favouring the contextualisation of the results in an integrated approach; the work aims to systematically classify paintings in categories that aid the examination of objects. A first grouping of paintings is based on the information initially available on them, identifying four categories. A focus of this study is the examination of case studies, spanning from the 16th to the 20th century, to evaluate and validate different protocols associated to each category, to show problems arising from paintings and explain advantages and limits of the approach. The research methodology incorporates a combined set of scientific techniques (non-invasive, such as technical imaging and XRF, micro-invasive, such as optical microscopy, SEM-EDS, FTIR, Raman microscopy and in one case radiocarbon dating) to answer the questions and, if necessary for the classification, exhaustively characterise the materials of the paintings, as the creation and contribution of shared technical databases related to various artists and their evolution over time is an objective tool that benefits this kind of study. The reliability of a close collaboration among different professionals is an essential aspect of this research to comprehensively study a painting, as the integration of stylistic, documentary and provenance studies corroborates the scientific findings and helps in the successful contextualisation of the results and the reconstruction of the history of the object.

Molecular radiotherapy (MRT) is a fast developing and promising treatment for metastasised neuroendocrine tumours. Efficacy of MRT is based on the capability to selectively "deliver" radiation to tumour cells, minimizing administered dose to normal tissues. Outcome of MRT depends on the individual patient characteristics. For that reason, personalized treatment planning is important to improve outcomes of therapy. Dosimetry plays a key role in this setting, as it is the main physical quantity related to radiation effects on cells. Dosimetry in MRT consists in a complex series of procedures ranging from imaging quantification to dose calculation. This doctoral thesis focused on several aspects concerning the clinical implementation of absorbed dose calculations in MRT. Accuracy of SPECT/CT quantification was assessed in order to determine the optimal reconstruction parameters. A model of PVE correction was developed in order to improve the activity quantification in small volume, such us lesions in clinical patterns. Advanced dosimetric methods were compared with the aim of defining the most accurate modality, applicable in clinical routine. Also, for the first time on a large number of clinical cases, the overall uncertainty of tumour dose calculation was assessed. As part of the MRTDosimetry project, protocols for calibration of SPECT/CT systems and implementation of dosimetry were drawn up in order to provide standard guidelines to the clinics offering MRT. To estimate the risk of experiencing radio-toxicity side effects and the chance of inducing damage on neoplastic cells is crucial for patient selection and treatment planning. In this thesis, the NTCP and TCP models were derived based on clinical data as help to clinicians to decide the pharmaceutical dosage in relation to the therapy control and the limitation of damage to healthy tissues. Moreover, a model for tumour response prediction based on Machine Learning analysis was developed.

In this dissertation, we focus on developing new green bio-based gel systems and evaluating both the cleaning efficiency and the release of residues on the treated surface, different micro or no destructive techniques, such as optical microscopy, TGA, FTIR spectroscopy, HS-SPME and micro-Spatially Offset Raman spectroscopy (micro-SORS) were tested, proposing advanced analytical protocols. In the first part, a ternary PHB-DMC/BD gel system composed by biodiesel, dimethyl carbonate and poly-3 hydroxybutyrate was developed for cleaning of wax-based coatings applied on indoor bronze. The evaluation of the cleaning efficacy of the gel was carried out on a standard bronze sample which covered a layer of beeswax by restores of Opificio delle Pietre Dure in Florence, and a real case precious indoor bronze sculpture Pulpito della Passione attributed to Donatello. Results obtained by FTIR analysis showed an efficient removal of the wax coating. In the second part, two new kinds of combined gels based on electrospun tissues (PVA and nylon) and PHB-GVL gel were developed for removal of dammar varnish from painting. The electrospun tissue combined gels exhibited good mechanical property, and showed good efficient in cleaning over normal gel. In the third part, green deep eutectic solvent which consists urea and choline chloride was proposed to produce the rigid gel with agar for the removal of proteinaceous coating from oil painting. Rabbit glue and whole egg decorated oil painting mock-ups were selected for evaluating its cleaning efficiency, results obtained by ATR analysis showed the DES-agar gel has good cleaning performance. Furthermore, we proposed micro-SORS as a valuable alternative non-destructive method to explore the DES diffusion on painting mock-up. As a result, the micro-SORS was successful applied for monitoring the liquid diffusion behavior in painting sub-layer, providing a great and useful instrument for noninvasive residues detection in the conservation field.

During the PhD program in chemistry at the University of Bologna, the environmental sustainability of some industrial processes was studied through the application of the LCA methodology. The efforts were focused on the study of processes under development, in order to assess their environmental impacts to guide their transfer on an industrial scale. Processes that could meet the principles of Green Chemistry have been selected and their environmental benefits have been evaluated through a holistic approach. The use of renewable sources was assessed through the study of terephthalic acid production from biomass (which showed that only the use of waste can provide an environmental benefit) and a new process for biogas upgrading (whose potential is to act as a carbon capture technology). Furthermore, the basis for the development of a new methodology for the prediction of the environmental impact of ionic liquids has been laid. It has already shown good qualities in identifying impact trends, but further research on it is needed to obtain a more reliable and usable model. In the context of sustainable development that will not only be sector-specific, the environmental performance of some processes linked to the primary production sector has also been evaluated. The impacts of some organic farming practices in the wine production were analysed, the use of the Cereal Unit parameter was proposed as a functional unit for the comparison of different crop rotations, and the carbon footprint of school canteen meals was calculated. The results of the analyses confirm that sustainability in the industrial production sector should be assessed from a life cycle perspective, in order to consider all the flows involved during the different phases. In particular, it is necessary that environmental assessments adopt a cradle-to-gate approach, to avoid shifting the environmental burden from one phase to another.

Colourants are substances used to change the colour of something, and are classified in three typology of colorants: a) pigments, b) dyes, and c) lakes and hybrid pigments. Their identification is very important when studying cultural heritage; it gives information about the artistic technique, can help in dating, and offers insights on the condition of the object. Besides, the study of the degradation phenomena constitutes a framework for the preventive conservation strategies, provides evidence of the object's original appearance, and contributes to the authentication of works of art. However, the complexity of these systems makes it impossible to achieve a complete understanding using a single technique, making necessary a multi-analytical approach. This work focuses on the set-up and application of advanced spectroscopic methods for the study of colourants in cultural heritage. The first chapter presents the identification of modern synthetic organic pigments using Metal Underlayer-ATR (MU-ATR), and the characterization of synthetic dyes extracted from wool fibres using a combination of Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) coupled to MU-ATR using AgI@Au plates. The second chapter presents the study of the effect of metallic Ag in the photo-oxidation process of orpiment, and the influence of the different factors, such as light and relative humidity. We used a combination of vibrational and synchrotron radiation-based X-ray microspectroscopy techniques: µ-ATR-FT-IR, µ-Raman, SR-µ-XRF, µ-XANES at S K-, Ag L3- and As K-edges and SR-µ-XRD. The third chapter presents the study of metal carboxylates in paintings, specifically on the formation of Zn and Pb carboxylates in three different binders: stand linseed oil, whole egg, and beeswax. We used micro-ATR-FT-IR, macro FT-IR in total reflection (rMA-FT-IR), portable Near-Infrared spectroscopy (NIR), macro X-ray Powder Diffraction (MA-XRPD), XRPD, and Gas Chromatography Mass-Spectrometry (GC-MS). For the data processing, we explored the data from rMA-FT-IR and NIR with the Principal Component Analysis (PCA).

To distinguish the components of NMR signals from hydrated materials and to monitor their evolution after the addition of water to the powders, during the first two days of hydration. To implement the 3 Tau Model in a MATLAB script, called 3TM, provided with a Graphical User Interface (GUI), to easily use the 3 Tau Model with NMRD profiles. The 3 Tau Model, developed a few years ago is used for interpreting the dispersion (NMRD profiles, dependence on the Larmor frequency) of the longitudinal relaxation times, for liquids confined in porous media. This model describes the molecular dynamics of confined molecules by introducing three characteristic correlation times and additional outputs.

In this thesis we will see that the DNA sequence is constantly shaped by the interactions with its environment at multiple levels, showing footprints of DNA methylation, of its 3D organization and, in the case of bacteria, of the interaction with the host organisms. In the first chapter, we will see that analyzing the distribution of distances between consecutive dinucleotides of the same type along the sequence, we can detect epigenetic and structural footprints. In particular, we will see that CG distance distribution allows to distinguish among organisms of different biological complexity, depending on how much CG sites are involved in DNA methylation. Moreover, we will see that CG and TA can be described by the same fitting function, suggesting a relationship between the two. We will also provide an interpretation of the observed trend, simulating a positioning process guided by the presence and absence of memory. In the end, we will focus on TA distance distribution, characterizing deviations from the trend predicted by the best fitting function, and identifying specific patterns that might be related to peculiar mechanical properties of the DNA and also to epigenetic and structural processes. In the second chapter, we will see how we can map the 3D structure of the DNA onto its sequence. In particular, we devised a network-based algorithm that produces a genome assembly starting from its 3D configuration, using as inputs Hi-C contact maps. Specifically, we will see how we can identify the different chromosomes and reconstruct their sequences by exploiting the spectral properties of the Laplacian operator of a network. In the third chapter, we will see a novel method for source clustering and source attribution, based on a network approach, that allows to identify host-bacteria interaction starting from the detection of Single-Nucleotide Polymorphisms along the sequence of bacterial genomes.

Non-linear effects are responsible for peculiar phenomena in charged particles dynamics in circular accelerators. Recently, they have been used to propose novel beam manipulations where one can modify the transverse beam distribution in a controlled way, to fulfil the constraints posed by new applications. One example is the resonant beam splitting used at CERN for the Multi-Turn Extraction (MTE), to transfer proton beams from PS to SPS. The theoretical description of these effects relies on the formulation of the particle's dynamics in terms of Hamiltonian systems and symplectic maps, and on the theory of adiabatic invariance and resonant separatrix crossing. Close to resonance, new stable regions and new separatrices appear in the phase space. As non-linear effects do not preserve the Courant-Snyder invariant, it is possible for a particle to cross a separatrix, changing the value of its adiabatic invariant. This process opens the path to new beam manipulations. This thesis deals with various possible effects that can be used to shape the transverse beam dynamics, using 2D and 4D models of particles' motion. We show the possibility of splitting a beam using a resonant external exciter, or combining its action with MTE-like tune modulation close to resonance. Non-linear effects can also be used to cool a beam acting on its transverse beam distribution. We discuss the case of an annular beam distribution, showing that emittance can be reduced modulating amplitude and frequency of a resonant oscillating dipole. We then consider 4D models where, close to resonance, motion in the two transverse planes is coupled. This is exploited to operate on the transverse emittances with a 2D resonance crossing. Depending on the resonance, the result is an emittance exchange between the two planes, or an emittance sharing. These phenomena are described and understood in terms of adiabatic invariance theory.
